Arsenal may now be willing to pay £70m for "incredible" Toney alternative

Arsenal may now be "willing to pay" market value for one club's "incredible" striker as a possible alternative to heavily-linked Brentford star Ivan Toney.

Will Arsenal sign a striker?

One gaping hole in Mikel Arteta's side, as widely believed, is the lack of a world-class centre-forward. While the Gunners are currently joint-top with north London rivals Tottenham on points, winning six out of a possible eight and remaining unbeaten in the Premier League, many of their victories have come through narrow one-goal margins. The title hopefuls, as a result, are eyeing up a new striker for 2024.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.

While some reports, like one from Football Transfers this week, have suggested that Arteta prefers to sign an alternative to Bukayo Saka – the vast majority have claimed that Toney is of real interest to Arsenal and a January move is possible. The Englishman, who scored 20 league goals, would seriously bolster Arteta's ranks and some pundits like TV journalist Piers Morgan say that the club's supporters are "kidding themselves" if they think Arsenal don't need a forward.

“I think that in January we have to go and get Ivan Toney or someone like him because we need a proper striker," said Morgan.

“Every Arsenal fan knows this and I think we’ve been kidding ourselves for too long that we can exist without one and the truth is that we can’t.”

Dusan Vlahovic transfer update

However, while links continue to surround a move for Toney, that isn't to say there are no alternatives. Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic, who's started this season with real aplomb, is one name to be mentioned recently. A report from Tutto Juve and journalist Massimo Pavan, sharing the latest Vlahovic transfer update, has claimed that Arsenal (and sporting director Edu Gaspar by extension) may now be "willing to pay" the Serbia international's market value of around £70 million to get a deal done.

However, there is some bad news for supporters concerning this, as Vlahovic's club are set to demand much more money than this. Indeed, a figure of around £90 million could even be the yard stick according to this report. Given Vlahovic's start to the new Serie A campaign, this is hardly surprising, as the former Fiorentina star has already scored four goals in six league appearances already this season.

Former Juve star turned commentator, Massimo Mauro, has also called the young striker "incredible" and "like he has always been" in Turin with the Old Lady.

“Vlahovic is incredible," exclaimed Mauro to TUTTOmercatoWEB (via the Juventus official website).

"It almost seems like he has always been there, he hasn’t undergone the change of environment at all like it happened in Florence also in Turin, he takes the field and scores goals. And now Juve is starting to scare again, if the others continue to take pauses for reflection, the Bianconeri are ready to return fully for the title fight.”

James Vince called into one-day squad as Dawid Malan released for England Lions

The match provides Malan a chance to find some form ahead of the Test series while Sam Curran also leaves the one-day squad to face India A at New Road

James Vince has been called up to England’s one-day squad for the deciding match against India at Headingley with Dawid Malan released to take up his place in the Lions side, to face India A in a four-day match at New Road, ahead of the Test series against India next month.Sam Curran, the Surrey allrounder, has also been let go from the one-day side to face India A which he was originally selected for. He made his debut against Pakistan at Headingley and further opportunity could arise when Ben Stokes is unavailable because of his trial in Bristol which starts the day after the first Test is due to finish.Malan is likely to feature in the middle order although he is under some pressure after two lean Tests against Pakistan where he made 46 runs in three innings. Since that series finished in early June, Malan has only played five matches – all for Middlesex – and his last four innings across various formats have been 0, 0, 2 and 0 including a pair in the pink-ball Championship match against Kent.He had been called into the one-day squad on the day of the first match after Alex Hales injured his side. After the England Lions game he has a Championship fixture against Warwickshire – there is a round of matches shoe-horned in amid the ongoing T20 Blast – before the Test series against India begins on August 1.England Lions team to face India A

Rory Burns (capt), Alastair Cook, Nick Gubbins, Dawid Malan, Ollie Pope, Chris Woakes, Sam Curran, Dom Bess, Matt Fisher, Jack Leach, Jamie Porter

As was the case with Malan, Vince won’t feature unless there is an injury to one of England’s top order ahead of the match on Tuesday but his call-up is acknowledgment for an impressive Royal London Cup campaign where he made 527 runs and captained Hampshire to the title.Vince, who lost his Test place at the start of the season, played the last of his five ODIs back in 2016 on the tour of Bangladesh when Hales and Eoin Morgan both opted out of the trip due to security concerns. He has been selected ahead of Sam Billings, who has been a regular part of the one-day squad but made precious few appearances. He was left out after the series against Australia and said there had been discussions between him and national selector Ed Smith that it was better to get a run of matches for Kent rather than carry the drinks for England. Billings has since found some form with 75 in the Royal London final and a T20 career-best of 95 not out, both against Vince’s Hampshire. There remains the possibility that there is one batting berth up for grabs in England’s World Cup squad next year with Billings, Vince and Malan perhaps in a three-way tussle.Surrey’s Rory Burns will captain England Lions against India A – a side that will also feature Alastair Cook and Chris Woakes – with a chance to further press his claims for Test selection. He is the leading run-scorer across all Championship cricket with 722 runs at 65.63 and could be the next man in line for a chance at the top of the order if another change is needed.Keaton Jennings was recalled in place of Mark Stoneman for the second Test against Pakistan, so will likely start the series against India, but Burns is breathing down his neck along with Nick Gubbins who is also part of the Lions side.

'There was a long conversation' – Borussia Dortmund boss Edin Terzic reveals talks with 'very dissatisfied' Jadon Sancho before his first Bundesliga goal of the season

  • Sancho returned to Dortmund on loan in January
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The English winger netted his maiden goal since returning to Dortmund on loan from Manchester United as he scored in the club's 2-1 win over Werder Bremen during the weekend. After the game, manager Terzic addressed Sancho's issues as he claimed that the player was 'dissatisfied' even after picking up his first goal.

  • WHAT EDIN TERZIC SAID

Speaking to reporters, the Dortmund boss said: "In the last few days and weeks, I’ve gotten many, many questions about why he isn’t where he was yet. For us, it makes complete sense if you take into account what his last 12 months looked like, and yet last week he was very dissatisfied and there was a long conversation.

"After the game, he was dissatisfied because he said he lost the ball too many times, especially in the second half, and that’s what I like about him. He is not just focusing on his goal but taking in the entire performance. Even though he hadn’t scored in the last few weeks, we’ve seen that he’s well on his way there. We know he’s not 100 per cent yet but we’ll get him there."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Earlier, Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl had blamed Manchester United for Sancho's poor run of form while praising the player's performance against Bremen. Kehl claimed that getting banished from the squad earlier in the season had affected the 23-year-old performance and went on to compare his absence from the pitch to suffering an ACL injury.

Spurs: "Phenomenal" player now "at odds with Tottenham", he’s trying to go

It has been reported that a "phenomenal" Tottenham Hotspur player is now "at odds" with the club, and he is currently working to leave.

What's the latest Spurs transfer news?

Despite the signings of goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, young centre-back Ashley Phillips, assured defender Micky van de Ven, England midfield star James Maddison, winger Manor Solomon, exciting striker Alejo Veliz and Wales forward Brennan Johnson over the summer transfer window, Lilywhites bosses apparently have their eyes on January.

Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou has seriously impressed over his first six Premier League matches as manager, with his side currently boasting an early-season unbeaten streak. Indeed, the north Londoners have won four out of their opening six league games and stand out as one of the division's highest-scoring sides. Next up, Tottenham battle fellow high-flyers Liverpool on home turf tomorrow – a match which is shaping up to be a very interesting encounter.

However, their success on the field could well be hampered by potential injuries to star players. A scare surrounding Maddison this week highlights this in particular, and you could argue there are few options behind fellow summer signing van de Ven if the defender were to be sidelined. Potentially as a result, chairman Daniel Levy and new Chief Football Officer Scott Munn are reportedly considering targets for the winter window.

The likes of Gleison Bremer (Juventus) and Lloyd Kelly (Bournemouth) have been mooted as targets by the press, while Spurs could also allegedly move for Brentford star Ivan Toney.

Who could leave Tottenham?

To make room for these potential new additions, it is believed that a fair few fringe squad members may well depart. The likes of Giovani Lo Celso and Ivan Perisic, despite their injury woes, are being tipped to leave when the transfer window reopens for business.

Eric Dier, who is yet to play a single minute for Postecoglou this season, is another who could make way as there have been reports of serious interest from Roma. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, regardless of his status as a real mainstay under Antonio Conte last season, is another apparently eyeing the exit door.

The Dane has struggled for regular starting places under Postecoglou, as he doesn't quite fit in to the Australian's new-look system, with Calciomercato providing an update on his future.

According to the Italian news outlet, Hojbjerg is "at odds with Tottenham", with both the player and his agents putting feelers out to various clubs across Europe. This would allow the midfielder to "say goodbye" to Tottenham, and Juventus are named as a possible destination for him.

However, due to their financial problems, they cannot afford Spurs' £26 million asking price. They are hopeful that a loan can be negotiated through representatives, as Juve won't be able to afford a permanent deal unless "excellent sales" are made – according to the report.

Hojbjerg stood out as one of Spurs' best-performing players per 90 last season, according to WhoScored. The 28-year-old also bagged four goals and five assists in that time, with Jose Mourinho previously calling him a "phenomenal player".

Trans-Tasman rivals brace for final reckoning

Big Picture

England’s coach Trevor Bayliss may be of the opinion that there’s no place for T20 internationals in a crowded calendar, but try telling that to the combatants in Wednesday’s final of the inaugural T20 tri-series in Auckland. Or indeed to the Eden Park crowd, who were treated last Friday to an astonishingly run-laden exhibition from the same two teams. Short boundaries, big hits, finely crafted specialist teams. Not to mention the prospect of NZD50,000 bounties if anyone clings on to a one-handed stunner in the stands. What’s not to like? It’s all a far cry from the permed hair and Frank Zappa moustaches that greeted Australia and New Zealand’s maiden T20 encounter at Auckland 13 years ago. Like the format as a whole, the world’s first T20 international may have been treated as a gimmick by its participants, but the game has got rather more serious in recent times.Australia, rightly, go into the final as favourites, but in the course of a dominant group stage, they have settled upon an astonishingly power-packed line-up. A key priority going into the tournament was to rest the likes of Steve Smith, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and other bankers of the 50-over and Test teams, but with this year’s Big Bash cementing several specialist reputations, the men at Australia’s disposal could hardly be more perfectly crafted to their roles. After a subdued Ashes and a struggle in the opening games, David Warner rediscovered his joie de vivre at Auckland with 59 from 24 balls, where D’Arcy Short’s free-spirited walloping alongside him no doubt reminded him of his own T20 origins. Glenn Maxwell’s Big Show has been in full flow throughout the tournament, not least in his one-man obliteration of England at Hobart, and with Andrew Tye’s illegible slower balls and Billy Stanlake’s cloud-snagging seamers leading the line with the ball, their opponents have often found no place to hide. That said, New Zealand are fully capable of some fireworks of their own. Colin Munro and Martin Guptill will probably still be wondering how they failed to set their side up for victory at Auckland last week, after plundering 132 runs in a 10.3-over opening stand, with Guptill going on to complete a national-record 49-ball hundred.Even so, they come into the match with a record of four defeats in their last five T20Is, after being pipped to the post by a subdued England in their final group game on Sunday. It mattered not in the bigger picture – England had already been edged out of qualification on net run rate by the time Tom Curran closed out the final over. But it sums up the challenge, even on a favoured home ground, of stopping the Australian juggernaut.

In the spotlight

David Warner has deferred the obvious question to his ranking officer, Steve Smith. But nevertheless, his leadership in Smith’s absence of a dynamic T20 outfit has been eye-catching, and were he to lift the Trans-Tasman Trophy with a perfect five-out-of-five record, it would heighten the suspicion that, for all his stellar achievements in the Test arena this year, Smith’s time in the shortest format has expired. Both as a batsman and a captain, Warner has already been planning for the unique angular challenge of Eden Park’s short boundaries. How he clears them himself, and places his own fielders in turn, will be critical to the outcome. It’s been a feast-and-famine fortnight for Warner’s New Zealand counterpart, Kane Williamson. One stunning performance, 72 from 46 balls against England in their Wellington victory, and three single-figure scores in his remaining games, including a grand total of nine runs from 23 balls for twice out against Australia. Williamson’s class cannot be disputed. But if New Zealand are to post the sort of total that can be defended against Australia’s rampant line-up, he’ll need to find his top gear from the outset.

Teams news

No changes anticipated to the New Zealand side that lost by two runs in their final group game against England. Mitchell Santner, who missed the last Auckland run-fest, will be back in the reckoning ahead of the hapless Ben Wheeler, who was spanked for 64 runs in 3.1 overs against Australia.New Zealand (probable) 1 Martin Guptill, 2 Colin Munro, 3 Kane Williamson (capt), 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Mark Chapman, 6 Colin de Grandhomme, 7 Tim Seifert (wk), 8 Mitchell Santner, 9 Tim Southee, 10 Ish Sodhi, 11 Trent BoultA settled and explosive line-up. It says something for Australia’s current depth that a player of the pedigree of Aaron Finch has had to find a niche at No.5 since his return from injury. It also says something that he has pounded 56 not out from 19 balls across his two innings to date.Australia (probable) 1 David Warner (capt), 2 D’Arcy Short, 3 Chris Lynn, 4 Glenn Maxwell, 5 Aaron Finch, 6 Marcus Stoinis, 7 Alex Carey (wk), 8 Ashton Agar, 9 Andrew Tye, 10 Kane Richardson, 11 Billy Stanlake

Pitch and conditions

It’s been damp in Auckland recently, but the on-field fireworks haven’t exactly fizzled. Another run-laden batting track is anticipated, while the ground’s short straight boundaries will guarantee more runs – even from top-edges – than might be expected at more conventional venues. “You just have to suck it up a bit,” says Williamson. Not half.

Stats and trivia

  • Despite it being their favoured T20 venue, New Zealand haven’t enjoyed their recent visits to Eden Park. They have lost each of their last four T20s in Auckland, with last week’s Australia victory following wins for South Africa and Pakistan (twice).
  • Their group-stage clash in Auckland featured a world-record run-chase from Australia, but not a world-record aggregate. That accolade, by one run (489 to 488) remains with West Indies’ victory over India in Lauderhill in 2016.

Quotes

“There was nothing you could do. We tried to execute our yorkers, we did, they still went for four. A short-pitched ball went for six off a top edge. Those sorts of things, you’ve just got to stand there and laugh and smile, because it’s challenging when you’re at these small venues.”
“If we look back at that last game, the difference of half an over – or each ball – can be the deciding moment in a game.”
Kane Williamson takes his own lessons from the same game.

Man United Handed Potential Transfer Boost

Sofyan Amrabat has turned down offers from Saudi Arabia as his priority is a switch to Manchester United, according to Fabrizio Romano

The Moroccan midfielder looks set to depart Fiorentina this summer.

What is the latest Sofyan Amrabat news?

It seems the midfielder has made his decision on his future.

According to a report from L'Equipe, the Fiorentina player was a target for Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli, who wanted to add him to their squad which includes new signings Edouard Mendy, Riyad Mahrez, Roberto Firmino and Allan Saint-Maximin. The report also stated that the Moroccan was set to make his decision on his preferred destination in the following days, and that his current club had resigned themselves to the fact that he was to depart this summer.

United have been long time admirers of Amrabat, having tried to bring in the midfielder back in the January window following his impressive performances during the World Cup that saw him get named in the World Cup Team of the Tournament.

The deal never happened and Amrabat remained with Fiorentina for the rest of the season, which was a campaign that saw him lose out in both the Coppa Italia final and the Europa Conference League final. Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag previously worked with the defensive midfielder at Utrecht, and is pushing for the club to complete the transfer.

sofyan-amrabat-fiorentina-tottenham-hotspur-transfer-gossip-mousa-dembele-postecoglou

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano revealed that Amrabat had turned down the offer from Saudi Arabia, as he is focused on completing a switch to the Red Devils. The Italian journalist also stated that United are waiting on the sales for Fred and Van de Beek to fund the transfer.

"Sofyan Amrabat, rumoured as potential target for Al Ahli last week, from what I understand, he does not want to negotiate with Al Ahli, but also all Saudi clubs as his priority now is Europe. Sofyan Amrabat wants to go to Man United, so he rejected very important financial approaches from Saudi because he wants to wait for Man United.

"As I always told you, there is no official bid to Fiorentina as they have to sell Fred, and it’s not going to be to Galatasaray from what I’m told, so other clubs are keen on Fred. But also, Donny Van de Beek, the conversation with Real Sociedad is ongoing, so Man United wait to sell one between Van de Beek and Fred before proceeding, but both will leave guys by the end of the summer, and then they will proceed with a bid for Amrabat, that is the plan at the moment."

Who do Man United have to sell for Amrabat?

There are two midfielders who could depart Old Trafford this summer to create the space for Amrabat.

One name Romano mentioned was Fred. The 30-year-old has seen his role reduced at United under ten Hag, and with the arrival of Mason Mount as well as the potential signing of Amrabat, opportunities would be even further limited for the Brazilian.

According to a report from 90min, Galatasaray have seen an offer rejected that fell below the asking price of £20m set by Man United, and have since pulled away according to Fabrizio Romano. Saudi clubs remain interested in the midfielder, and Fulham could reignite the interest they showed earlier on in the summer.

Fred

The other name mentioned by Romano was Van de Beek. The Dutch international has had a disappointing career at Old Trafford following his £39m switch from Ajax in 2020, having only made 60 appearances for the club during a three-year spell blighted by injury problems that have forced him to miss 52 games.

According to reports, Real Sociedad have opened talks regarding the midfielder despite concerns about the player's injury problems, with the asking price set to be £25m.
