Two years into international cricket, 17-year-old Shafali Verma is fully aware of the need to improve constantly and her immediate focus is on tweaking her short-ball game against fast bowlers.Having made her India debut as a 15-year-old, Shafali has come a long way over the past 24 months and alongside Smriti Mandhana, forms one of the most explosive opening pairings in women’s cricket. However, on tours of England and Australia this year, Shafali was peppered with short balls and she didn’t look particularly comfortable against them. So, to get better against the rising ball, Shafali is now facing 200-250 balls from Under-25 men’s players, who can clock 125-130 kmph, at Shri Ram Narain Cricket Academy in Gurugram, under the watchful eyes of her coach Ashwani Kumar.”It feels good that I have been able to complete two years in international cricket but there is a long way to go. I know the areas of my game I need to get better at and one of them is playing the short ball,” Shafali told PTI after being named a Hyundai brand ambassador. “The coaches have also told me to play as per the ball and I will continue to do that. I will never change my game.”During the England and Australia series, Shafali was seen backing away to the short balls and the approach fetched her mixed returns. The coaches at the academy are making her play the short ball on cemented, astroturf and normal wickets. And, besides negotiating higher speeds from the men, Shafali is also facing throwdowns.Related

“I won’t back away that much going forward. You will see me shuffling around the crease a lot more and play as per the merit of the ball,” Shafali, who is also working on her fitness, said. Her coach Kumar feels Shafali will only get better with time and experience. “We must not forget that she is still 17. Her dream Test debut shows that she has got the required technique to succeed at the highest level.”In the shorter formats, where there is scoreboard pressure, you need to be really quick with your thinking and that is where she needs to improve a bit. As she goes along playing for India, you will see her only getting better.”Mandhana targets better consistency for World Cup success
Mandhana, who was named a Hyundai ambassador alongside Shafali, Jemimah Rodrigues and Taniya Bhatia, said she wants to add more consistency to her batting going into the Women’s ODI World Cup in New Zealand in March.”Post [the] Covid [-enforced break from cricket], it was hard to get the rhythm back as I was playing international cricket after one and a half years,” Mandhana told PTI. “It took a while to get into the groove but the last two series [England and Australia] have been decent but surely there is scope for improvement.”I am really happy with the way I have been timing the ball… [But] as a batter you have to be selfish to be more consistent and that’s something I want to work on, closing games on a regular basis especially the tight finishes.”It is something which we all know that we need to work on as that is going to help us in the World Cup.”India has lost ODI series to South Africa, England and Australia since March, but Mandhana feels the team has got the best possible preparation for the World Cup. India will also play New Zealand before the World Cup.”The last one year has been really important for us and especially playing in England and Australia. We are also playing New Zealand, so playing the top three-four teams in a space of seven-eight months, that is the best preparation for World Cup. We have learnt a lot in the last two series.””The Australia series was a good one though results didn’t go our way. Almost all the matches were decided in the last over and those were matches we could have won or lost. We were able to score 250 plus in two out of three games. Will take take all the positives from that. I also learnt a lot in Australia.”

West Ham scout £27m striker in int’l break amid Fullkrug injury concerns

Amid Niclas Fullkrug’s struggle to hit the ground running at the London Stadium, West Ham United sporting director Tim Steidten is now reportedly plotting an opening bid to sign a Champions League striker in 2025.

West Ham transfer news

The Hammers were among the Premier League’s biggest spenders in the summer transfer window, welcoming the likes of Crysencio Summerville, Fullkrug and Jean-Clair Todibo to hand new manager Julen Lopetegui an instant boost. The former Wolverhampton Wanderers boss is yet to pay back that faith, however, following a poor start which only looked like beginning to turn a corner in a 4-1 victory over Ipswich Town last time out.

Fullkrug has been a particular disappointment following how he stole the headlines at Borussia Dortmund in the previous campaign, before also impressing at the Euros in Germany. Still searching for his first goal for the club and missing the last five through injury, those at the London Stadium may not have too much patience with the 31-year-old, especially if a more long-term option emerges.

According to Darren Whitcoop of the Sunday People, relayed by West Ham Zone, Steidten is now plotting a bid to sign Alexander Sorloth from Atletico Madrid in the January transfer window after scouting the Norway forward in the international break against Slovenia. The move would likely see Fullkrug fall down the pecking order under Lopetegui amid concerns over his injuries.

This follows reports of West Ham’s interest, which looks set to step up into a formal move when the January transfer window swings open. Sorloth, like Fullkrug, has struggled to adapt to new surroundings since completing a summer move from Villarreal to Atletico Madrid.

Villarreal striker Alexander Sorloth

Arriving for a reported £27m in the summer, it would come as little shock if Atletico Madrid were at least looking to recoup what they spent when the winter window swings open and West Ham potentially come calling.

"Great" Sorloth could earn Premier League redemption

Amid West Ham’s concerns over Fullkrug’s injury issues, they could hand Sorloth a long-awaited shot at Premier League redemption. If you cast your mind back to 2018, the Norway international arrived at Crystal Palace only to endure a struggle for form and eventually put his Selhurst Park spell to forget behind him in the summer of 2020.

It’s been quite the battle back to the top ever since, with stops on the way at RB Leipzig, Real Sociedad and Villarreal all offering the forward mixed experiences before his biggest move yet to Atletico Madrid. Now, after just one goal in nine La Liga games, life in Madrid will be starting to feel all too familiar for Sorloth, who could already be heading towards the exit door.

After scoring a staggering 26 goals in all competitions last time out, however, there’s clearly a star striker still in there, albeit not one ready to steal the show under Diego Simeone, despite the fact the manager dubbed him “strong” in the summer. Instead, Lopetegui could be the man to finally get the Norwegian back to his best as he potentially seeks Premier League redemption at the London Stadium.

Ipswich could forget Phillips by unleashing "fantastic" ace out on loan

Not many of Ipswich Town’s players covered themselves in glory last time out in Premier League action, as the Tractor Boys fell to a 4-1 defeat away at West Ham United.

Liam Delap could at least exit the game with some of his pride remaining, having fired home the early equaliser on the day, before Julen Lopetegui’s Hammers eventually ran rampant in the one-sided affair.

Kalvin Phillips will have trudged off at the end in a foul mood when examining his own individual display, as the ex-Leeds United man had an unhappy return to his former loan employers.

Kalvin Phillips' start at Ipswich

In truth, the Manchester City flop is yet to resurrect his playing days in Suffolk, with McKenna and Co taking a huge gamble on Phillips to come good on a season-long loan switch.

It is only early days, but there are warning signs already that Phillips will struggle all campaign long in his new environment, with his showing at the London Stadium rather dire.

The former Whites midfielder would lackadaisically give the ball away in the opening exchanges to hand Michail Antonio a first-minute opener, whilst Phillips then stood off Jarrod Bowen when the former Hull City man ran through at goal in the second 45 minutes which made it far easier for him to score to make it 3-1 on the day.

The out-of-sorts 28-year-old would be substituted off around the 74-minute mark after putting in a poor performance, with McKenna now looking at what personnel he could bring into the side over the Man City dud after the international break.

Unfortunately for the much-loved Tractor Boys manager, the options aren’t exactly overflowing, with Massimo Luongo now sidelined, alongside Jens Cajuste already being absent.

Ipswich's surprise Phillips replacement

As a result of the complications facing McKenna in the middle of the park, there could be a way back for a loaned-out presence to gain some action soon in the Ipswich first-team fold if he is recalled.

At only 20 years of age, it did make sense this summer for homegrown Ipswich product Cameron Humphreys to spread his wings and play more football out on loan at Wycombe Wanderers, with minutes going to be extremely hard to come by at the very top of the English game.

However, with McKenna already stating that he has a ‘close eye’ on the midfielder’s progression away from Portman Road and with Phillips visibly struggling, the youthful Chairboys loanee could be a welcome addition back in the ranks before too long, having shone in the third tier to date.

Looking at the new Wycombe midfielder’s numbers glancing at the table above, he has proven himself to be a well-rounded individual in the middle of the park so far, with an eye for goal also complemented by an ability to win tackles and play dirty.

Ipswich could have done with a tougher presence centrally away at West Ham, alongside a more attack-minded figure like Humphreys can offer, as Phillips lost out in four of the nine duels he went in for whilst Morsy registered just one blocked shot in the contest.

Labelled as a “fantastic” talent when he was first loaned out to Wycombe in the summer by McKenna, Humphreys is also being closely monitored by those back in Suffolk, with the door presumably wide open for the 20-year-old to gain more first-team chances down the line.

Already amassing 39 first-team appearances at Portman Road, the future looks bright as he attempts to nail down a first-team spot. On the flip side, Phillips will worry his time with Ipswich will just end up going down as another disappointing blot on his CV.

Mohammad Azharuddin, the former India captain, and Jaydev Shah, former Saurashtra captain and current president of the SCA (Saurashtra Cricket Association), are part of a seven-member working group formed by the BCCI to oversee the conduct of the upcoming 2021-22 domestic season. The other members include Rohan Jaitley, (DDCA president), Yudhvir Singh (UPCA secretary), Devajit Saikia (ACA secretary) Avishek Dalmiya (CAB secretary) and Santosh Menon (KSCA secretary). The working group’s immediate task is to formalise a compensation package for BCCI’s domestic players for the pandemic-induced, truncated 2020-21 domestic season.India’s rising Covid-19 cases and a small available window made even smaller by the staging of IPL 2020 in the UAE between September and November meant the BCCI couldn’t conduct their premier men’s domestic tournament, the Ranji Trophy, last year. In the women’s circuit, the domestic T20 competition was called off, while none of the age-group tournaments were possible. The absence of the Ranji Trophy, the biggest source of income for domestic male cricketers in India, led to a significant decrease in player earnings, leaving many layers without government jobs looking for opportunities elsewhere. A domestic male player on an average takes home INR 12-14 lakh per season. This amount decreased to INR 3-4 lakhs for the 2020-21 season.Related

The Ranji Trophy has been slotted into a three-month window, from November 16, 2021 to February 19, 2022.The seven-member committee will also be responsible for feasibility of bio-bubbles across the country for the conduct of the domestic season, apart from finalising venues and logistics. Board president Sourav Ganguly has already underlined the importance of creating bio-bubbles for the season.”We will create bio-bubbles,” he told reporters last week. “We created bubbles for Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy last time. We will have to do the same. Without the bubble, cricket cannot happen even for this season.”

Haider Ali and Umaid Asif suspended from PSL final for violating bubble protocols

Peshawar Zalmi’s Haider Ali and Umaid Asif have been suspended from Thursday’s PSL final against the Multan Sultans in Abu Dhabi after the duo admitted to charges of violating the tournament’s health and safety protocols by meeting people from outside their biosecure bubbles. They also failed to maintain the prescribed social distancing.A release from the PCB said the incident occurred on Wednesday and the decision to withdraw the two players was taken on the morning of the final by the tournament’s Covid-19 management panel comprising Barrister Salman Naseer (PCB, chief operating officer) and Babar Hamid (director – commercial, and PSL head).”The two cricketers were found not to have interacted with any other squad members at any time after the incident and have been placed in room isolation,” the release said. For the same reason, Ali has also been withdrawn from the upcoming tours of England and the West Indies, and replaced by Sohaib Maqsood.Asif’s exclusion is a significant blow for the finalists, with the fast bowler a mainstay in the starting eleven. He had played every one of Zalmi’s games in Abu Dhabi up till now, with Wahab Riaz and Mohammad Irfan the only other available teammates to have taken more than his eight wickets this season. While Haider has struggled for form and was dropped from the side four games into the Abu Dhabi leg, he remained a potentially explosive option ahead of the final.Asif released a statement following the announcement, acknowledging the breach and expressing “immense remorse for my actions”. “I am bitterly disappointed at not only missing out on playing in the PSL final but more importantly for letting my Peshawar Zalmi teammates down,” he said.

Calling Arsenal 'the new Stoke City' is unfair: Mikel Arteta is simply covering all bases to finally end long wait for Premier League glory

Manchester United were latest team to fall victim to the Gunners' set-piece prowess, which could give them an edge in the title race

Arsenal are the set-piece kings of the Premier League. Mikel Arteta's men cemented that standing on Wednesday as Jurrien Timber and William Saliba both scored from corner routines to wrap up a hard-fought 2-0 home win over Manchester United, which saw them close the gap on Liverpool at the top of the table to seven points.

For the first 50 minutes of the game, United stifled the Gunners while sticking to new manager Ruben Amorim's compact 3-4-3 formation, and the atmosphere inside the Emirates Stadium fell flat. But Arsenal always have a Plan B to fall back on.

Once the dead-ball deliveries started raining down, United were left completely overwhelmed, and in the end, they were fortunate not to lose by a far wider margin. They are not the first side to buckle under that pressure, though, and won't be the last.

No other team in Europe can match Arsenal's total of 22 goals from set-pieces since the start of last season; it's a unique strength that ensures they are never out of a game. But some consider the approach to be a form of anti-football.

"Arsenal is the new Stoke City, right?" Dimitar Berbatov said while covering the game as a pundit for . "Depending on set-pieces to give you the win." They were, however, bitter and unfair words from an ex-United striker.

Arsenal should not be written off as one-dimensional; Arteta is simply covering all bases to try and deliver the club's first league title in 20 years.

  • Getty Images Sport

    'Impossible to defend'

Every time Declan Rice or Bukayo Saka walked over to the corner flag, you could sense the fear among the United squad. The routine always starts the same way: four or five of Arsenal's most physically imposing players line up on the far side of the six-yard area, before crowding around the opposition goalkeeper like bees being drawn to honey as the ball is swung in.

Andre Onana was completely helpless on both Arsenal goals, with Timber nodding home the first at the United keeper's front post, and Saliba turning the ball into the net for their second after a deep corner from Saka found Thomas Partey. The Gunners constantly mixed it up with their delivery, and put blockers in place that made it very difficult for United to win first and second balls.

Amorim tried a zonal marking system to combat the threat, which backfired. But plenty of other teams have opted to go man-for-man, and the result has been the same.

"As coaches, when we prepare these strategies, you know what the opposition are going to do," Portugal boss Roberto Martinez, who previously managed in the Premier League at Wigan and Everton, said on the panel. "The uniqueness of Arsenal's work is that they always find a little trick that makes things impossible to defend if the delivery is right."

    Nothing on Stoke

Over the last two seasons, 25 percent of Arsenal's 119 Premier League goals have come from set-pieces – as per . However, that record is still inferior to Tony Pulis' Stoke, whose ratio reached a staggering 43% between 2008 and 2013.

The Potters were masters at maximising every corner and free-kick opportunity, but their main weapon was Rory Delap – who became known as the ultimate long-throw-in specialist. It was rare for Stoke to try and score from open play; they relied purely on physicality to accumulate points.

Arteta does not want his Arsenal to be tarred with the same brush. “We want to be very dangerous and very effective from every angle and every phase of play,” he said after the United win. “Last year we scored the most goals in the history of this football club, not because of only set-pieces but because of a lot of things that we have. We want to create individual and magic moments, too.”

  • Getty

    'Most annoying bloke in football'

Set-pieces should be considered part of Arsenal's "magic". The Gunners are getting so much success because of the countless hours spent refining their process on the training ground, with set-piece coach Nico Jover having an especially profound impact on Rice, who set up Timber's goal against United.

"When you go up for a corner it's a chance to score a goal, so to score both of them from corners, Nico will be buzzing and I'm so happy," Rice said. "Seeing clips, I know the weight I need to put on the ball and it's just about repetition. I put a few good balls in and could've had a couple of assists, so it was nice to get one."

Jover takes Arteta's place on the edge of the touchline whenever Arsenal win set-pieces high up the pitch, barking instructions to Rice and Saka as well as the runners in the penalty area. United legend Gary Neville described the Frenchman as "the most annoying bloke in football" during a watch-along special for 'The Overlap' podcast, which reflected the jealousy brewing throughout the whole league.

Arsenal now have an advantage over their rivals because of Jover's innovative methods, but Arteta is adamant that their collaboration does not centre solely around dead balls. "We share a very clear vision about how we want to put everything together," the Arsenal boss said at his pre-match press conference. "It's not about open play or set-pieces, it's how everything is connected, aligned and can work efficiently in our team."

    Perennial entertainers

Arsenal can hurt opponents in so many ways; set-pieces is just one of them. Arteta's side warmed up for United by thrashing Nottingham Forest, Sporting CP and West Ham, scoring 13 goals across those three games, and some of their football was a joy to behold.

When the likes of Saka, Kai Havertz, Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard are firing on all cylinders, Arsenal are almost impossible to stop. There is a ferocious intensity to all of their work on and off the ball, while Arteta also encourages self-expression to open up defences.

"A lot of players can create their own goals," he said in midweek. "We can create goals from short counters and long counters, slow build-ups, restarts and the opportunity to open up the opposition. Every single phase of play let’s maximise it, keep working on it, keep improving."

Arsenal can outplay any team on their day, and are deservedly revered as English football's perennial entertainers. But that's not enough to win titles. Arteta knows that, which is why he has embraced a variety of different styles over the last two seasons.
