Daniel Sams’ cameo earlier had helped Thunder get to 182 after James Bazley’s four-for
AAP29-Dec-2022A magnificent batting performance from Brisbane Heat opener Colin Munro wasn’t quite enough to help the bottom-placed team avoid another BBL defeat to the Sydney Thunder. Two days after beating Heat by 10 wickets, Thunder saluted again at Metricon Stadium on Thursday, winning by 11 runs, despite a sensational 98 from Munro.Thunder made Heat regret their decision to bowl first as they brought up their biggest score of the season. But the result came at a cost for Thunder after strike bowler Gurinder Sandhu sustained a left calf strain bowling the first ball of the Heat innings, putting his availability for the match with Hobart Hurricanes on Saturday in doubt.Things looked dire for the Heat when they slumped to 14 for 2 in the second over but Munro was undeterred by his team’s predicament, ensuring Heat kept going at a good rate with spectacular hitting as wickets tumbled around him.Munro played a lone hand for Heat, smacking three sixes and nine fours, and going at a strike rate of 185 in his 53-ball innings.Unfortunately for the New Zealander, though, hardly any of his teammates stuck around to help in the run chase, with James Bazley (29 off 24 balls) the only one who provided meaningful support, combining for a 48-run sixth-wicket partnership with Munro. After spinners Chris Green and Usman Qadir put the brakes on between the 13th and 16th overs, Heat’s required run rate exceeded 12.5 as they went 26 balls without a boundary And when Qadir had Bazley plumb lbw with 16 balls to go, Heat’s assignment became very difficult.A controversial ball change in the final over brought about an immediate result as Nathan McAndrew had Munro caught at deep midwicket – one of three wickets to fall in the space of five balls.Late fireworks from Daniel Sams, Alex Ross and Oliver Davies helped propel Thunder to their imposing score. Sams was especially destructive, hammering four sixes, including back-to-back sixes off Mitchell Swepson, one of which sailed into the second tier.Earlier in the innings, Rilee Rossouw and Matthew Gilkes combined for a 57-run second-wicket partnership to lay down a solid foundation for Thunder.James Bazley, who was the only inclusion to Heat’s line-up for this match, was the pick of the bowlers, taking 4 for 22 from his four overs and finding himself on a hat-trick in the final over.Wicketkeeper Gilkes also took one of the catches of the season when he dove to his left at full stretch and snaffled a spectacular one-handed grab to dismiss Heat captain Jimmy Peirson attempting to hook McAndrew down the leg side.
Afghanistan and Ireland shared the points on offer after persistent rain prevented any action – or even the toss – from taking place in their men’s T20 World Cup match at the MCG on Friday. For Afghanistan, the result came just two days after their game against New Zealand, at the same venue, had also been abandoned. With the point they earned today, Ireland, who had beaten England earlier, climbed up two steps to No. 2 in the group, behind New Zealand, who are on three points from two games.Afghanistan have two points, the same as Sri Lanka, England and Australia. But all those teams have played one game fewer and also have a “W” against their names, unlike Afghanistan, who had lost to England in their first match of the tournament before the successive washouts. It was a frustrating afternoon for all concerned. Although it wasn’t raining an hour before the scheduled start of the match, it started pouring just minutes before the scheduled toss, at 2.30pm local time. The toss was delayed as a result, and at 3pm – the scheduled start of play – the umpires announced an inspection for an hour later, by when losing overs was inevitable.Rain remained on the radar, and while it abated for periods, raising hopes of , another downpour around 3.30pm brought the covers back on. Then, at around 4.15pm, it was decided that an inspection would be conducted only after the rain stopped, but the abandonment was announced just 18 minutes later.A point against Afghanistan might have boosted Ireland’s hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals, but they do have games against Australia and New Zealand lined up. They will back themselves, though, after having pulled off a tight five-run win [DLS method] against England.Australia play England in the evening match at the MCG, with rain set to play a part there too.
There were plenty of incomings at Manchester City during the January transfer window. They made two defensive reinforcements, signing Abdukodir Khusanov from Lens and young Brazilian defender Vitor Reis from Palmeiras.
There was also one addition in the midfield, with City signing Nico Gonzalez from FC Porto on deadline day, to help strengthen his options in the middle of the park. Pep Guardiola’s side also added depth in attacking areas, signing Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt.
No one left the Etihad Stadium permanently in January, although there were a few outgoings on loan. They were mainly youngsters, which included former Luton Town loanee Issa Kabore. However, the notable loan exit was Kyle Walker.
Why Kyle Walker left City
On the whole, it has been a really tough season for the England international, who struggled for his best form in a City shirt. He played 18 times across all competitions but looked like a shadow of his former self.
A low point of the season for the former City skipper was his clash with Rasmus Hojlund during the Manchester Derby. There was a coming together between the pair, with Walker going down clutching his head despite minimal, if any, contact. Roy Keane said he was “embarrassed” for the City number two.
Walker moved to AC Milan in January, on loan with an option to buy him in the summer for just £4.2m. He has made two appearances so far, with his first Serie A game coming in the Milan derby against Inter.
Of course, it remains to be seen if the Rossoneri activate the optional buy clause. They certainly would not be breaking the bank with just £4.2m, and it is not really an amount that City can reinvest into a replacement.
With that being said, they might wish they had kept a former academy star who is now worth millions more than their former captain and could have been his replacement,
The player City should not have sold
The player in question here is Bayer Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimpong. The 24-year-old has been simply sensational under Xabi Alonso but was once a key member of City’s academy sides as a youngster.
Bayer Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimpong.
The Dutchman played for City’s under-18s, under-19s, and under-21s before moving from the Etihad Stadium to Scottish giants Celtic. The Glaswegian side paid a reported £300k, and he spent two seasons at Celtic Park before his move to Germany.
At Leverkusen, he has been simply sensational and has quickly proven that he’s now a far more complete player than the aforementioned Walker. The Dutchman, who has operated as a right-wing in possession for much of his time in the Bundesliga, has played 174 times, scoring 28 goals and grabbing 43 assists.

This term, his form has been no different. The former City academy star has three goals and 11 assists in 32 games for the club. That includes an impressive five assists in eight Champions League games, with two of those coming in a 4-0 away win to Feyenoord.
Given his imperious form, it might not be a surprise to learn that Frimpong is now incredibly highly valued according to CIES Football Observatory. He is worth £69.6m, with just two of his club teammates, Florian Wortz and Piero Hincapie, valued higher. That is a remarkable 1557.14% increase to the buy clause in Walker’s loan deal with Milan.
Looking back on it, perhaps the Cityzens regret letting Frimpong leave. Although he is an extremely attacking wing-back, he is a “cheat code”, according to football scout Antonio Mango. Given the impact he has had on Leverkusen’s side, he could have been a huge difference-maker for City.
Jeremie Frimpong for Bayer Leverkusen
Alas, there is nothing Guardiola can do about the sale of Frimpong now. He could have been a big asset, and perhaps the Citizens regret moving him on, especially given how much he is worth compared to Walker.
Mutual decision comes after Australian chose not to pursue contract extension

Lisa Keightley will leave her position as England Women’s head coach at the end of the summer after deciding not to pursue the option of a contract extension.Keightley was appointed in late 2019, and guided England to the final of the 2022 ODI World Cup. She also oversaw runs to the semi-finals of the 2020 T20 World Cup and Commonwealth Games, where England were beaten in the bronze-medal match on Sunday. She will continue to coach the team until the end of the home season, with limited-overs series against India scheduled next month. It is understood the decision to part ways was mutually agreed on before the Commonwealth Games. The ECB will now begin the process of recruiting a new head coach ahead of the next Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa in February.Although England failed to defend the World Cup they won in 2017, and missed out on successive T20 titles, Keightley’s period in charge was marked by an injection of younger talent into the side, with Sophia Dunkley establishing herself as a first-choice pick and the likes of Issy Wong, Alice Capsey and Freya Kemp coming through.Jonathan Finch, the ECB’s director of England women’s cricket, said: “We are incredibly grateful for the commitment and passion Lisa has shown over the last two-and-a-half years in the role. We have seen increased competition for places over the last 12 months and the squad Lisa leaves is an exciting blend of youth and experience.”Leading an international team is challenging at the best of times. It is more challenging during a pandemic, and Lisa has been able to continue the development of the team during what has been the toughest period we have faced off the field.”Clare Connor, ECB interim chief executive, said: “I’d like to place on record our sincere thanks to Lisa for all her efforts across the last two-and-a-half years.”Lisa was always a fierce opponent when she represented Australia, and she’s brought that same pride, passion and will to win into everything she’s done with the England Women’s team.”The team have enjoyed working with her immensely and I know they’ll join me in wishing her all the very best for her next challenge.”Keightley’s departure follows that of her senior assistant and fellow Australian, Tim Macdonald, who announced in June that he would be leaving after the Commonwealth Games to take up an assistant coaching post with the Perth Scorchers and Western Australian men’s teams.
Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson will be pleased at how well the club has adjusted to League One football this season. At the time of writing, they currently sit in third position, just two points behind leaders Birmingham City.
A third successive promotion would be incredible for the club – owned by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney – although this rise up the footballing pyramid was perhaps expected given the money put into the side.
Nevertheless, Parkinson will be using the January transfer window to arrange some new signings, while potentially moving on players who are currently not warranting game time or have just a few months on their remaining contracts.

There is still plenty of time left for the club to make the necessary changes required to take them from League One to the Championship and we take a look at the potential ins and outs which could occur at Wrexham this month…
Wrexham in League One: Latest standings, fixtures, results & key dates
FFC has all the latest Wrexham info as they seek promotion from League One, along with a look at the Red Dragons’ journey to where they are today.
ByStephan Georgiou Oct 8, 2024 Potential Wrexham Incomings Patrick Bamford (Leeds United)
A few seasons ago, Patrick Bamford was shining in the Premier League for Leeds United, scoring 17 goals for the club in the top flight during the 2020/21 campaign.
Since then, he hasn’t quite lived up to those performances, failing to score over ten goals during a single season. He has endured his fair share of injury issues over the previous three seasons, missing a total of 50 games for his club.
Towards the end of 2024, journalist Ben Jacobs reported that Wrexham were showing interest in a move for Bamford, as the club were looking to sign a proven Championship striker to aid their promotion charge.
There is no doubt the Englishman would be an ideal signing, but a move does appear to be a tad unrealistic. The 31-year-old is currently earning £70k per week at Leeds, as per Capology. Considering the highest earner at Wrexham was taking home £7.2k per week as of last season, Parkinson would have to smash his previous wage structure to sign the once-capped Englishman.
12 England footballers with just one cap
There are a few England players to have represented the Three Lions on just one occasion.
ByMark Marston Oct 13, 2023 Ryan Hardie (Plymouth Argyle)
Another Championship centre-forward who is on Parkinson’s radar is Ryan Hardie, who plays for Plymouth Argyle.
According to Football League World, the League One side could be set to face a battle with Huddersfield Town over the Scot, who has shone during his time in the south-west.
The 27-year-old has scored 64 goals for the club since joining in 2020, including 12 in the second tier last season. If a bid of around £2m is made, Wrexham could be on to a winner.
He has struggled in the league this season, scoring a solitary effort from the penalty spot, but considering his record in League One – 49 goal contributions in 131 games – perhaps he is the player to push the club into the top two.
Cauley Woodrow (Luton Town)
The links to Championship strikers continue, this time with Luton Town’s Cauley Woodrow. The Hatters forward has been linked with a move to Wrexham by Football Insider, which believes Parkinson is showing interest in the player.
The 30-year-old featured 24 times in the Premier League for Luton after their stunning promotion to the top flight, though he only found the net once all campaign.
With no goals this term, Woodrow has struggled, and this could see Wrexham make their move this month to bring him to the third tier.
The Hatters are only beginning to move away from the Championship relegation places and this could potentially impact whether they would be willing to sell the striker to Parkinson’s side this month, though Rob Edwards’ recent departure could throw another spanner in the works.
If Wrexham are able to strike a deal, it could be a shrewd piece of business, especially if he can return to the form he showed during his time with Barnsley, where he netted 53 goals in all competitions.
Wrexham's most expensive signings of all time
Football FanCast takes a look at Wrexham’s record signings.
ByCharlie Smith Dec 30, 2024 Potential Wrexham departures Steven Fletcher
Steven Fletcher joined the club ahead of the 2023/24 season, going on to score eight times as Wrexham finished second in League Two.
So far this term, the Scot has five goals, with four coming in just six games over the festive period to spur his team to third place in the league.
With this record, why would Parkinson want to lose him? Firstly, he is 37 and will be 38 by the time the 2025/26 campaign comes around. Secondly, his contract expires this summer.
The manager has made it clear he is looking to bring a Championship-level striker in this month, and if he succeeds, it could signal the end of the road for Fletcher, who would perhaps struggle if Wrexham were promoted to the second tier.
Much will depend on whether Parkinson can sign the players he wants before the transfer window closes. If he does, moving Fletcher on for a fee might be the best course of action.
James Jones
James Jones
According to The Athletic, nine players at Wrexham are expected to leave due to their contracts expiring in six months, with James Jones one name on the list.
The 28-year-old hasn’t had much impact on the pitch this season, making just six appearances for the club as injuries have plagued what could be his final season in Wales.
Appearing to be surplus to requirements, this could see Parkinson place Jones up for sale this month in order to secure a fee for the midfielder, freeing up some space in his first-team squad in the process.
Jacob Mendy
Another name on The Athletic’s list is Jacob Mendy, who will be desperate to move away from the club in order to kickstart his career.
Following a season where he made 36 appearances for Wrexham, scoring twice and grabbing five assists, the left-back has played only four League One games this term.
Aged 28, the Gambia international is certainly in the peak years of his career, and with his contract also expiring this summer, Parkinson would surely rather receive a fee for Mendy this month than lose him for nothing when the season finishes.
Everything you need to know about Jurrien Timber's salary at Arsenal
Jurrien Timber joined Arsenal from Ajax in July 2023. The right-back arrived at the Emirates with great expectations but suffered an ACL injury just a month into his time in London, resulting in a long spell on the sidelines.
Despite this setback, Timber was back in action for Mikel Arteta's side in the 2024-25 season, instantly proving himself to be an integral member of the team with consistently impressive performances.
The Netherlands international is well compensated under his current contract at the club, but he is does not quite find himself near the top earners at the Emirates. How much does he earn at the Gunners, though?

Highest paid players in the world
Despite the astronomical wages in the Premier League, neither of the players make the cut when it comes to the highest earners across world football.
At the top sits all-time top goalscorer of the Champions League Cristiano Ronaldo, who currently plays his football for Al Nassr. He is followed by his former Real Madrid attack partner Karim Benzema.
Former Manchester City player Riyad Mahrez makes his appearance at number three while Senegalese internationals Sadio Mane and Kalidou Koulibaly round off the list at fourth and fifth spot respectively.
Mason Greenwood has been set a deadline in which to save his Marseille career, with the ex-Manchester United forward being dropped to the bench.

WHAT HAPPENED?
On the back of a 2024 transfer to Stade Velodrome, Greenwood enjoyed a bright start to his spell in French football. He remains Marseille’s leading scorer this season, with 15 goals recorded through 26 Ligue 1 appearances.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Greenwood has, however, slipped down the pecking under Roberto De Zerbi. His demanding coach has said of the 23-year-old’s recent efforts, which have led to him being removed from starting XIs: “I expect more from him. He has to do more, because what he is currently showing is not enough.”
DID YOU KNOW?
Marseille included Greenwood among their substitutes for defeats to Lens and Paris Saint-Germain heading into the March international break. They will be back in action against Reims on Saturday, with Greenwood making an early return to training ahead of that contest – which has pleased his boss.

WHAT NEXT FOR MASON GREENWOOD?
are, however, reporting that Greenwood only has until the end of the season in which to earn the trust of the manager. If he fails to do so, and with exit talk already raging, then the one-cap England international – who is switching allegiance to Jamaica – will be moved on in the summer transfer window.
After an incredibly tough start to their first Premier League campaign in 22 years, Ipswich Town are looking like a team that can stay up.
Kieran McKenna’s side have already played the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Brighton & Hove Albion, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, and yet they are just one point off of safety.
However, today brings with it another stern test as the Suffolk side take on the high-flying Nottingham Forest at the City Ground, and should he be fit, they’ll have to find a way of coping with the talented Morgan Gibbs-White.
Fortunately, the Tractor Boys should be in high spirits following their draw with United on Sunday, and they even have an answer to the Forest ace in one of their own exciting attackers.
Ipswich's recent form
Impressively, Ipswich are unbeaten in their last three league games, drawing away to Leicester City, beating Spurs, and then, of course, earning a famous point at home against the Red Devils over the weekend.

There were standout performers all over the pitch for the Tractor Boys on Sunday, including summer signing Dara O’Shea, who looked like a brick wall at times.
The Irishman received an 8/10 rating at full-time from the East Anglian Daily Times’ Alex Jones for his efforts, and as his statistics from the game show, it was fully deserved.
For example, in just 94 minutes, he was able to make four tackles, five clearances, two interceptions, win ten of ten duels, and even block a shot for good measure.
Alongside the Irishman, Jones awarded captain Sam Morsy an 8/10 for his efforts, and once again, it’s an opinion that’s hard to argue against, as alongside making two interceptions and one clearance, the Egyptian international made things tick in the middle of the park, taking 84 touches and completing 67 of 71 passes.
However, while both starters put in stellar performances, Jones’ man of the match was someone else entirely, someone who could be McKenna’s answer to Gibbs-White.
Ipswich's answer to Gibbs-White
So, to get right to the point, the Ipswich player who seriously impressed on Sunday and could be the team’s answer to Gibbs-White is none other than Omari Hutchinson.
The former Chelsea star scored the Tractor Boys’ only goal against United, earned a 9/10 from Jones, and generally looked a threat all game, but why is he the club’s Gibbs-White?
Well, the first reason is his positional versatility.
Like the Forest ace, the “superb” 21-year-old gem, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, is more than capable of playing off the right or in attacking midfield, depending on what the team needs at any given time.
This ability to play in two different areas of the pitch and do so well is such an incredibly useful skill to have, as it allows the manager more flexibility in how he sets up his team or reacts to the opposition.

The second reason is related to what we saw on Sunday: the ability to just make something happen for their team.
Now, it’s true that the Redhill-born dynamo has struggled with his output this season, but it is his first season of top-flight football, and in 50 appearances for the Blues last season, he racked up an impressive haul of 11 goals and six assists.
Moreover, he scored crucial goals, including two in the penultimate game of the season away from Hull City, and then scored the team’s second goal against Huddersfield Town on the final day of the season, thus securing promotion.
Ultimately, Hutchinson is an incredibly exciting prospect in his own right, but it’s his positional flexibility and ability to make things happen that make him Ipswich’s own Gibbs-White, and therefore, McKenna has to play him today.

Echeverri was sent back on loan to the Argentine powerhouses after Manchester City acquired him from River Plate in the winter of 2024 for a reported fee of £12.5 million ($15.7 million) plus add-ons. The youngster has now joined the Premier League champions' squad this February, more than a year after signing on the dotted line and could play a part in the rest of their season, as Pep Guardiola's side continue to underwhelm.

Echeverri is unlikely to be able to start training with Manchester City right away after having suffered an injury during an U-20 South American Championship clash for Argentina against Brazil. Nonetheless, the highly-rated attacking midfielder will be a part of the future at Etihad Stadium. In his first interview with club media, Echeverri revealed that he also talked to City and Argentina legend Sergio Aguero before deciding to join the eight-time Premier League champions.
Getty ImagesWHAT ECHEVERRI SAID
Speaking to club media, Echeverri said: "I've spoken to [Sergio] Aguero, I knew about it [the relationship between Argentina and Manchester City]. Aguero, in particular, stands out. He's a legend here at Manchester City because of everything he achieved and the incredible player he was."
The Argentine also talked about joining Manchester City and added: "Football has been my life, and my dream was to play for one of the best teams in Europe. Today I am closer to that dream. Manchester City are one of the best teams in the world. Not only do they win trophies, they play the game so beautifully. They are an example to everyone – they show people how to play football the best way.
