CSA will apply affirmative action while hiring consultants

While the directive is not set in stone, it will be used to test whether people of colour are provided with opportunities

Cricket South Africa will apply an affirmative action policy when hiring consultants in future, which could affect the likes of Jacques Kallis and Paul Harris. While the directive is not set in stone, it will be used a means to test whether people of colour are provided with opportunities they may otherwise have been denied.”Obviously there is a lot of talent sitting in the white pool, just by our history and if there is a particular skill that only a white consultant can offer CSA, then obviously we will use them,” Kugandrie Govender, CSA’s acting CEO told ESPNcricinfo. “This an internal measure for us to check ourselves because there was no measure before and people did whatever they wanted to do. We need to ask: ‘Could you have employed a black person in this position?’ We are not saying we don’t want any white people. We are saying if you want that you have got to go through a process and you have specifically prove that no-one else can do the job.”Asked specifically what this may mean for the future involvement of Kallis, who worked as a batting consultant during the previous summer, Govender said: “I’ll swap it around: do you think anyone else could do what Kallis was doing? If Graeme (Smith) says Jacques can do this, nobody else can, then the cricket people need to decide.”Govender said South Africa’s director of cricket Graeme Smith, who is in charge of support staff appointments for the national men’s and women’s team, the under-19 side and the academy, has been informed of the policy. “I have spoken to Graeme, he was in all of the meetings. It’s not something he doesn’t know about. One of our organisational objectives is to transform. We inherited that people before us did that transform,” she said. “While Graeme does have a contract that says he has decision-making power, he has to work within the policies and processes of CSA, like we all do.”Smith has come under fire for appointments he made when he took over in December last year and named Mark Boucher men’s head coach, and roped in Kallis in as a batting consultant. In his defence, he previously pointed to the other support staff he also hired, and emphasised Kallis’ worth.”I made a number of appointments, not only Mark Boucher – such as the permanent appointment of Volvo (Masubelele), the team manager, Justin Ontong (fielding coach), Charl Langeveldt (bowling coach), Enoch Nkwe (assistant coach) and the medical staff,” Smith said last month. “If you’re asking me whether I think Jacques Kallis is one of the best cricketers we’ve ever had, I will tell you yes. It would be stupid of us not to involve our most successful cricketer and the batting experiences he could bring to our young batters. But I understand (people’s concerns). I think a balanced approach is key.”Apart from Kallis and Harris, who was requested by Keshav Maharaj to work with him during the summer, this could also impact on those not involved with on-field activities such as the security company, headed by Rory Steyn or the professional coaching courses led by Anton Ferreira. If or how they will be affected is yet to be determined, but Govender underlined that CSA must show a greater commitment to transformation because they recognise that their pace of change has been too slow. She pointed to the outpouring of stories of discrimination from former players of colour which has dominated the cricket conversation in this country over the last few weeks as evidence that CSA has to act decisively and immediately “Our problems are not financial. Our reserves remain the same. We would have liked to add to it but we closed the year on a profit. Our problems stem from the fact that we have not transformed enough and not fast enough,” Govender said. “It’s a regulatory measure that we are saying we are holding ourselves accountable because in the past we haven’t. It is radical in some sense but if it had happened organically over the years, it wouldn’t need to be.Is it an ideal? Absolutely not.”CSA have also come under fire from South Africa’s sports ministry recently for appointing several white men to senior positions and will consult with the minister Nathi Mthethwa as they prepare to reschedule their AGM. Govender made it clear that the new policy has not been imposed on CSA by Mthethwa or his office. “It was not a directive from government. They wanted to know what our turnaround plan is and this is one of the things,” she said.CSA have yet to decide a new date for their AGM which has been moved from Saturday as the organisation aims to address a range of issues, from governance to transformation.

Chelsea could land Osimhen & Sesko alternative in "elite target man"

With Mauricio Pochettino’s replacement now found, Chelsea will begin to take action on their summer signings.

Due to Enzo Maresca’s style of play not being completely dissimilar from the Argentine’s, the majority of the squad fits the new boss’ philosophy.

However, one position that’s set to be upgraded as a priority is at centre forward, with a number of targets being reported.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at a target who could prove to be the dream alternative to Victor Osimhen and Benjamin Sesko.

Chelsea’s search for a new striker

According to a report from Football Transfers, Chelsea are interested in signing Artem Dovbyk.

It’s mentioned that the Ukrainian forward isn’t just on the list of potential opinions, but he’s a “key target.”

The striker currently plays for Girona in Spain, and he has a release clause of £34m this summer.

Nigerian attacker Osimhen has been linked with a move to Chelsea recently, but he would cost around £111m.

Sesko is another name that’s been linked, but Dovbyk would prove to be a much cheaper option, which makes him the perfect alternative to the targeted duo.

Why Dovbyk would be the dream alternative

It’s fair to say that Girona have captured the hearts of football fanatics from around the globe, qualifying for the Champions League against all odds.

The entire squad has been immense under boss Michel, but one player who’s stood out above all is Dovbyk.

Last season in La Liga alone, the striker made 32 appearances, scoring an insane 24 goals and providing eight assists, a return of a goal contribution per game.

The 26-year-old ended the campaign as the top scorer in the division after a hat-trick on the final day, but how does he compare to Osimhen and Sesko?

Evidently, all three centre forwards are the definition of goal-scorers, who consistently provide an immense level of reliability in the final third.

Dovbyk has the characteristics of a traditional centre forward as well as a modern-day striker, using his great movement and tall frame to serve as a threat in multiple ways, as shown via his vast array of goals (video below).

His high xG per 90 minutes proves that he’s a striker who will continue to get chances every game, while his goal-to-shot ratio and actual goals show that he’s an incredible finisher who’ll likely take advantage of any opportunity.

However, unlike the other two, he also serves as a creator for those around him, a link between the midfield and attack at times due to his “good link-up play,” as mentioned by football analyst Ben Mattinson.

According to journalist Zach Lowy, the best way to describe Dovbyk is that he’s “an elite target man,” and his statistics clearly support that comment.

It’s clear to see that for over three times less than Osimhen and less than Sesko, Chelsea could sign a player with just as much quality, and therefore, it makes so much sense to try and sign the Ukrainian machine this summer.

INEOS could sign Eriksen upgrade for Man Utd who’s like a "young Pogba"

It's been a rough Premier League season for Manchester United this year, with every small semblance of recovery quickly extinguished by another disappointing defeat or draw.

Erik ten Hag hasn't been able to build upon his impressive first season, and following the shocking result against Crystal Palace on Monday night, it feels like just a matter of time before he is handed his P45.

That said, for all of his mistakes in the dugout, he has been let down by a number of his players, especially at Selhurst Park, where the likes of Andre Onana, Casemiro, and Christian Eriksen put in hall-of-shame performances, although based on recent reports, the club might already have an upgrade lined up for the latter, and he's been compared to a young Paul Pogba in the past.

Manchester United transfer news

According to a report from journalist Graeme Bailey earlier this week, Manchester United sent a team of scouts to watch OGC Nice's Ligue 1 clash with Strasbourg over the weekend to keep an eye on midfield ace Kephren Thuram, who they were reported to be interested in last month.

Nice midfielderKhephren Thuram.

The report has claimed that Nice are 'gearing up to lose at least one big name this summer', and while Chelsea were also said to have scouts in attendance on the weekend, INEOS' links to the French side can only bode well for future negotiations.

No potential price has been reliably reported in recent weeks, but when Premier League rivals Liverpool were said to be interested in the Frenchman last year, Italian publication Tutto Juve (via Football365) claimed that it would cost around £45m to secure his services.

kephren-thuram-premier-league-liverpool-transfer-news

It certainly won't be a cheap deal to complete, but nor is it likely to be unreasonably expensive in the current market. Moreover, with the comparisons to a "young Pogba" and the cratering form of Eriksen this year, it seems like a deal United can't afford to miss out on.

How Thuram compares to Eriksen

The comparison to United's previous French midfielder may seem outrageous at first, but it comes from respected data analyst Ben Mattinson, and there is some merit in it.

He hasn't claimed that the 23-year-old talent is as good as the World Cup winner in his pomp – few players are – but that he has undeniable similarities to a younger version of the divisive midfielder.

For example, Mattinson has argued that while the Nice ace has slightly less flair than his older compatriot, he shares his attacking ability while also possessing a defensive astuteness that could see him play as a defensive midfielder, as some believed Pogba would be in his younger days.

Aside from his similarities to past stars, United should be going all out to sign Thuram because he would represent a massive upgrade on Eriksen in every department, as shown when comparing the pair's underlying numbers.

For example, while the Dane produces slightly more progressive passes per 90 than his potential competition does, he comes out second best in every metric relevant to a central midfielder and by quite some way in a few, such as progressive carries, shots, tackles, successful take-ons and aerial duels won.

Moreover, at 32 years old, it seems doubtful that the former Tottenham ace will improve over the summer, whereas at just 23, the Frenchman still has another two years until he's likely to hit his peak, per The Athletic.

Ultimately, while Eriksen has been a brilliant player for much of his career and even put in a good shift for the Red Devils last season, his decline has been steep and with Thuram seemingly attainable this summer, United should do all they can to bring him in as an upgrade.

Pat Nevin says "very underrated" £50m star could choose to join Tottenham

BBC Radio 5 Live pundit Pat Nevin wouldn't be surprised if a £50 million star chooses to join Tottenham Hotspur this summer, and he believes the player would really suit Ange Postecoglou's system.

The key areas where Spurs could make new signings for 24/25

There are a number of key areas which Postecoglou could look to strengthen when the window reopens, one of which is at centre-back.

Pundit urges Levy to seal "incredibly affordable" deal after Tottenham news

He could be an astute summer purchase.

ByEmilio Galantini Apr 18, 2024

The Spurs boss has admitted that his side could go and sign another central defender, regardless of capturing Radu Dragusin for £25 million from Genoa, as it is an area of the squad which Postecoglou thinks needs more reinforcement.

As well as in defence, many reports are suggesting that technical director Johan Lange and the Tottenham recruitment team are keen on signing a new goalscoring winger as well, with Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze and Wolves winger Pedro Neto among the big names linked in recent months.

With Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg looking more and more likely to depart in the summer window, rumours have been circulating over the possibility of a new midfielder coming in, and one name regularly mentioned is Chelsea star Conor Gallagher.

The 24-year-old has been crucial for Mauricio Pochettino's side, starting the vast majority of games as one of their star players, but PSR worries at Stamford Bridge mean Chelsea may have to sell Gallagher as his contract ticks down towards expiry in 2025.

The "very underrated" England international hasn't committed to an extension, so Chelsea selling £50 million Gallagher for pure profit is a real possibility, rather than losing him for nothing next year.

Pat Nevin says Gallagher could choose to join Tottenham

Speaking to the media, as relayed by The Metro, pundit Nevin says Gallagher could choose to join Tottenham and that the player would be perfect for Postecoglou's system.

“In an ideal world where finances are all balanced, Chelsea would absolutely not be looking to sell Conor Gallagher. I can’t imagine it, it’s unthinkable," said Nevin this week.

"Similar to when Mason Mount left. But if the finances say you need to do it then you need to do it. It may be unbelievably painful for a lot of Chelsea fans because, as someone said to me the other day, it feels like selling the family silver. Chelsea have been selling off bits of the stadium and hotels and it’s slightly discomforting but the accountants are in control really.

Chelsea's Conor Gallagher.

“You wouldn’t be surprised if he went to someone like Spurs signed Conor Gallagher, obviously that would be particularly painful for Chelsea fans. But what a player he would be for them, I’d probably say he’s better suited to Spurs, the way he plays.

“The transfer situation is really quite delicate with Chelsea because we don’t know who is making the decisions and that’s what it comes down to. If it comes down to the manager then he will make changes and will want to get rid of a number of players and bring in more experience in certain areas."

Talks held: Man Utd working to sell £75,000-a-week player in £40m+ transfer

Manchester United are thought to be holding talks with clubs over selling one player in a deal worth more than £40m, according to a new update.

Man Utd exit rumours

With new investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe now in control of sporting decisions at Old Trafford, it could well be a busy few months off the pitch ahead of his first full season with the Red Devils.

There have already been changes higher up, with Omar Berrada appointed CEO from rivals Manchester City and Dan Ashworth wanted as sporting director after being placed on gardening leave by Newcastle United.

A new manager could also be on the cards, with reports suggesting that Ratcliffe has already decided to move on Erik ten Hag and has identified Roberto De Zerbi as a replacement after a disappointing second campaign in charge.

On the pitch, The Manchester Evening News recently shared an in-depth story looking at 21 players who could leave the club this summer. It now appears as if the Red Devils are actively looking to sell one of those players mentioned.

Mason Greenwood transfer update

One player who could end up leaving Old Trafford for good this summer is Mason Greenwood, who, as we know, is currently on a season-long loan at Getafe. He was moved on last summer on deadline day months after off-field charges against him were dropped.

Now, according to a new update from Marca, Red Devils officials have travelled to Spain to resolve the forward’s future and have already held talks with Barcelona chief Deco over a potential permanent transfer.

United officials will also speak with Getafe and want around €50m (£42.7m) for Greenwood’s services, with Atletico Madrid another possible La Liga destination for the £75,000-a-week player.

Greenwood, who is out of contract in Manchester at the end of the 2024/25 campaign, has been a regular out on loan with Getafe, playing all across the front three and contributing to a goal every other game.

Ratcliffe has also spoken out on the attacker’s future, saying last month in his first press conference: “It’s a fresh decision. I can talk about the principle. I am not going to talk about Mason. I am familiar with it. The principle is the important one. We will have other issues going forwards.

“You are dealing with young people who have not always been brought up in the best circumstances, who have a lot of money and they don’t always have the guidance they should have.

“What we need to do when we have issues like that is understand real effects, not the hype. Then we need to make a fair decision in the light of the club’s values. That’s what we need to do and that’s how we will deal with it.”

Arsenal and sporting director Edu have "positioned" themselves in the race to sign a record-breaking young talent who's wanted across the continent.

Mikel Arteta has built a winning team since joining from Man City, and that has been nurtured over many seasons as the club look towards the future as well as the present.

As the table-topping Gunners chase their first league title in 20 years under Arteta, Edu revealed that Arsenal want to sign "young" players with "beautiful" futures ahead of them.

"We already have our targets,” said the Brazilian (via TNT Sports). “We have planned a lot ahead and I will be worried if we don’t score a lot of goals and if we’re not creating chances, which is the opposite because we create a lot and score a lot of goals.

“The plan is to try to get better every year and I think we are in a good moment. Let's see if we can keep improving. I think if you see the type of the players we have at the moment, it’s players which have a big, big commitment of [to] the club, which is very important. So the way we transmit to the fans, transmit to people our commitment – sometimes you can lose, you can win games, it’s all part of the sport – helps us perform the best way possible and show the passion we have for the club and try to be win as many games as we can.

“Many times in certain conversations to recruit the players you don't see the character of the player or the character of the player does not fit well with what we are trying to do and then you have to move on and try to find what we’re really looking for. If you see all the signings we’ve made since we started together, everyone is almost the same, young, energetic and passionate, and good talents with big, beautiful futures ahead of them.”

Arsenal have their eyes on Brazilian talent Douglas Mendes as one option for the future, and another who has now found himself on their radar is AC Milan forward starlet Franceso Camarda.

Arsenal position themselves in Camarda transfer race

The 16-year-old, who became Serie A's youngest ever player to make their debut earlier this season, is wanted across Europe.

That is according to Foot Mercato, who also explain that Arsenal have "positioned" themselves in the race for Camarda alongside a host of other top sides. The attacker has a stellar reputation, and could well emerge as one of the continent's next young stars.
