Why Dawid Malan remains on England fringe despite absurd T20I record

After just 15 games, Malan has piled on 661 runs and passed 50 in more innings than he has not

Matt Roller07-Sep-2020Fifteen games into his T20I career, Dawid Malan’s England record is absurd. He has piled on 661 runs, passed 50 in more innings than he has not, and has the highest average in the format ever (min. 500 runs) while maintaining a strike rate of 147.87.And yet, as things stand, Malan is not in England’s strongest team. Eoin Morgan admitted as much on the eve of the series, maintaining that he saw Jos Buttler, Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow as his top three with Malan considered primarily as a top-order option. It is a strange turn of events, and one that illustrates England’s batting depth in white-ball cricket – particularly in top-order roles. “It’s been tough,” Malan said on Monday. “We all know how good the players are that hold those positions.”Their records over the last four or five years have been fantastic. For anyone to break in, you have to be extremely consistent and win games of cricket for England. I’m obviously aware that guys like Jason [Roy] and Stokesy [Ben Stokes] will come back at some point, and it’s my job to score as many runs as I can in the opportunities I have to put pressure on them and Morgs and the selectors when it comes down to it.”ALSO READ: Buttler to miss final England T20I for personal reasonsWhile his efforts in New Zealand last winter – 208 runs in four innings, including a blistering hundred in Napier – were the most memorable, Malan’s efforts against Australia to date have been his most important, coming on slowish pitches against a world-class attack at a ground with big boundaries. Taking Ish Sodhi to pieces on postage stamps is one thing; holding your own against Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins is another altogether.Dawid Malan opens the face on a drive•Getty ImagesBut perversely, there is a sense that Malan’s efforts this summer have demonstrated why he continues to be first reserve rather than first on the teamsheet. He is a slow starter – now notoriously so – and while that is hardly an issue if he continues to pile on the runs after playing himself in, innings of 23 off 23 balls and 7 off 8 against Pakistan exemplified the problem.

Even in the first game against Australia, when he accelerated brilliantly to make 66, his early struggles seemed to force his team-mates to attack, with four of them being dismissed trying to force the pace as he ticked along.”It’s not something in my gameplan that I want to take five balls or 10 balls [to get going] – it’s just the way it happens,” Malan said. “You obviously go out and want to score as many runs as you can quickly.”My first three or four T20Is, I got off to really good starts. And when you bat at No. 3, you come in in different positions. You might come in in the first over or the fifth over. You might face a bowler in his second over when he’s in his rhythm.”There has been a lot written in the press about it, and it’s something I’ve spoken to Morgs about before this series. I said, ‘look, if there’s something you want me to do differently’. And he said: ‘the way you play is exactly how we want you to play – you just keep doing what you’re doing’.”The man that matters is Eoin Morgan, and if he’s happy with the way I’m approaching it, then that’s good enough for me at the moment. That doesn’t mean I’m not trying to improve on that – I always want to improve, so I can keep pushing a case to be in the starting XI.”Malan also revealed that he asked Morgan following the series in South Africa whether he would be better served by dropping down into the middle order when playing domestic T20 cricket, but suggested that he had no plans to do so for Yorkshire in the Blast or over the winter – including in a possible Big Bash stint.”He said: ‘that’s your choice, if you want to take a year out doing something out of your comfort zone but will risk you getting picked for England in the future’,” Malan said. “His words were, ‘if you keep doing what you’re doing and keep improving there’s no reason you can’t potentially slot into those positions’ – even though they see me as a top-four batter at the moment.”But with a number of left-handers – Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali, and Morgan himself – in those spots, it seems unlikely. Instead, it seems that Malan’s best chance remains as a top-three batsman, hoping that his ability against spin – honed on slow wickets in franchise tournaments – counts in his favour. He will continue at No. 3 in the final game of the series on Tuesday, with Tom Banton set to move up to open.”You go to Bangladesh and play on a wicket that’s a 200 wicket on the Monday and a 120 wicket on the Tuesday,” he said. “You are consistently learning how to adapt and read conditions which I think is one of my strengths in T20 cricket; that I can assess situations pretty quickly, when to go and when to sit back.”It’s a good learning curve going out there. If I am lucky enough to play well enough over the next year to get into the T20 World Cup squad, then I hope the experience I have playing in tournaments will put me in good stead.”

£4m-a-year Rangers ace doesn’t want to stay at Ibrox, he’ll now be sold

After missing out on the Scottish Premiership, Rangers are set to suffer more frustration with one player set to leave the club this summer in a disappointing blow for Philippe Clement.

Rangers transfer news

The Gers looked on course to complete a sensational title comeback in Scotland with the race even in their hands at one stage, but Clement's side ultimately fell short and Celtic kept their crown for another year. That's not to say there have been no positives under Clement, however, who took those at Ibrox from out of the race to win the title entirely to taking their Old Firm rivals all the way.

Now, in his first summer transfer window in charge, the Belgian can finally make his mark to build on the positives already centred around his time in charge so far. And reports suggest that could see both Oscar Cortes and Abdallah Sima arrive in permanent deals after impressing on loan. Sima has particularly starred during his short spell at Ibrox and represents and seemingly remains on course to potentially turn his loan permanent. The same can't be said for Fabio Silva, however.

Rangers winger Abdallah Sima.

According to Caught Offside, Rangers want to keep Silva but the forward is ready for a new challenge and does not want to stay at Ibrox. He won't be kept around in the Midlands however, as Wolves plan to show him the door amid interest from AC Milan and Sevilla this summer.

It's frustrating news for the Gers, given their reported stance on the forward, but they can at least look to spend his reported £4m-a-year salary on improving Clement's squad through other arrivals.

The 21-year-old, meanwhile, finds himself at a career crossroads. After failing to find his feet at Wolves and opting out of a permanent move to Rangers, Silva must get back on track with his next move, wherever that may be.

Silva signing would have been a risk

Whilst it's always important to take into account that Silva is still just 21 years old, there still needs to be signs that he will reach that potential of his. Whether it's been at Wolves or Rangers, he has yet to really show those signs since his Benfica days, meaning that any permanent deal would have been a risk for the Gers.

Having initially joined Wolves for a reported £36m back in 2020, everyone in the Midlands will be incredibly disappointed with the way things have worked out, including executive chairman Jeff Shi, who told the club's official website after the Portuguese forward arrived: "Our recruitment team have been watching Fabio since he played for Portugal under-16s and they feel he has always been the best number nine coming through his age group anywhere in Europe.

“Fabio is a young player who shows not only incredible technical ability, but also his game intelligence for a player of his age is top class. He has the ability to drop in to link play and hold the ball up to bring others into play. He always then looks to get in the box and his movement and intelligence in the penalty area is as good as anyones."

Sunderland must now ruthlessly replace star who earns 2x Hume’s wage

Even though Sunderland would play all of the second half with a 1-0 lead away at West Bromwich Albion with an extra man advantage, the Black Cats defence still needed to battle bravely at the Hawthorns to get the slim Championship win over the line.

Trai Hume notably stood out in the West Midlands playing in a centre-back role for the day, amassing 75 touches when moving the ball confidently out from defence on top of winning four duels.

The 22-year-old has been a crucial player for Sunderland this season under various different managers, stepping up to the mark and excelling after signing from his native Northern Ireland in 2022 as a raw and untested gem.

Yet, Hume still finds himself earning a measly pay packet compared to this injury-prone Black Cats man somehow, even whilst the unlucky player in question hasn't featured in a single first-team game this season.

Corry Evans' wage at Sunderland

Corry Evans' time at Sunderland was going swimmingly until a devastating anterior cruciate ligament injury stopped him in his tracks mid-way through the 2022/23 campaign, having amassed 64 appearances for the Wearside outfit in total with the captain's armband even being worn by the 33-year-old on occasion.

Now, however, Evans has only made four appearances in the last two years for Sunderland since, with two of those being comeback games in the U21 ranks recently to try and then ease him back into the men's game soon.

Yet, with the missing Sunderland man now reaching the end of his career age-wise anyway away from his injury issues, it looks unlikely that Evans will ever have the same impact he once had in the first-team with Pierre Ekwah taking his holding midfield role off him alongside an equally fitter and younger Dan Neil.

It could well even be this summer when Sunderland have to address Evans' overall cost to the Black Cats bank account, with the absent figure earning £8k-per-week.

Hume comes in as earning a lesser £3k-per-week in contrast, with the Black Cats potentially prepared to cut ties with Evans at the end of this campaign to try and balance out the wage bill accordingly.

Evans' wage compared to the Sunderland squad

It's not just Hume who will feel aggrieved about his salary compared to Evans', with the aforementioned Ekwah also earning just £3k-per-week despite scoring the crucial winner against the Baggies last match.

Moreover, Hume's reliable defensive partner in Luke O'Nien earns £7.5k-per-week in contrast even whilst the former Wycombe Wanderers man continues to valiantly take on captain duties with Evans still not fit enough for a first-team comeback.

2. Daniel Ballard

£15k per week

3. Bradley Dack

£15k per week

4. Patrick Roberts

5. Anthony Patterson

£10k per week

Evans is only £2k-per-week off entering into the top five earners at the Stadium of Light this season despite being a permanent fixture in the treatment room, something that will need to be addressed soon by the underperforming Championship side.

The 33-year-old's contract is up this coming June which could bring his stop-start time in Wearside to a sombre end, a disappointing conclusion for Evans who was a key first-teamer when the Black Cats won promotion from League One during the 2021/22 season before all these injury troubles piled up.

Sunderland midfielder Corry Evans.

Yet, with Sunderland moving in the direction of filling their squad with exciting talents for the future, an injury-prone figure like Evans at 33 years of age just doesn't fit in anymore.

  • WHO ARE THE NOMINEES?

Manchester City are well represented on the six-man shortlist for 2023-24 after claiming a historic fourth successive Premier League title. Haaland landed another Golden Boot, Foden thrived in a playmaking role and Rodri remains a destructive influence in the middle of the park.

Odegaard helped to keep Arsenal in contention for a top-flight crown, before falling narrowly short, and will be determined to right those wrongs heading forward – allowing him to follow in the footsteps of fellow Gunners captains Tony Adams and Patrick Vieira by lifting the most sought-after of trophies.

Elsewhere, Cole Palmer has become a talismanic presence for Chelsea – with a stunning debut campaign at Stamford Bridge enjoyed by the England international – while Ollie Watkins remains a regular source of goals for Aston Villa.

All of the above are in the running for the PFA Player of the Year award – which will be handed out on August 20 at a glitzy ceremony in Manchester – and you can find out more about the six contenders below…

The prolific Norwegian may have dipped slightly from 36 Premier League goals to 27 in 2023-24, but he finished with another top-scorer prize to his name and a second title. Arguably the most fearsome No.9 in world football, Haaland can look unplayable when performing at the peak of his powers.

The Gunners skipper has been recognised by his peers with back-to-back PFA Player of the Year nods. The classy midfielder makes Mikel Arteta’s side tick with his ability to pick a pass and unlock opposition defences, with eight goals and 10 assists added to his tally in 2023-24.

Howe must drop Newcastle star to allow 5ft 10 talent to flourish

Newcastle United have failed to replicate their brilliant form from last season, which saw the club qualify for the Champions League for the first time in two decades.

A combination of injuries and players' poor form has seen Eddie Howe's side drop to tenth in the Premier League, a whopping 16 points off the top four.

Injuries to Sven Botman and Nick Pope and the drop of form from the likes of Miguel Almiron and Kieran Trippier have all contributed to the Magpies' lowly league position.

Squad depth has been a real issue for Howe, with the club struggling to fill the gaps left by the injured squad members, with youngster Lewis Miley the beneficiary of an unexpected run of games in England's top flight.

However, one player who has been fit for the majority of the campaign needs to be brutally dropped this weekend at home to West Ham United, with one youngster more than deserving of a run in the starting eleven.

Lewis Hall's stats for England U20s

After being called up to the England U20 side for the recent international break, Newcastle defender Lewis Hall has finally been allowed to showcase what he's capable of after his lack of minutes this season at St James' Park.

The 19-year-old joined the Magpies on loan with an option to buy for £28m, with the left-back only featuring for 104 minutes in the Premier League since his arrival.

However, he's featured twice for his country during this break, grabbing two assists off the bench in the 3-1 win over the Czech Republic earlier this week.

The 5 foot 10 starlet linked up with Magpies teammate Miley before the 17-year-old suffered a back problem that will see him miss up to six weeks as Howe struggles with yet more injury troubles.

Hall must be a frustrated figure given his impressive form with England's U20 side, with the left-back unable to receive any game time in recent weeks with the likes of Tino Livramento and Dan Burn ahead of him in the pecking order.

However, his displays must give Howe a headache, with Hall displaying what talent he possesses when given the opportunity to express himself.

Why Hall must replace Burn on Saturday

Burn, who has been described as a "liability" by former Arsenal man and pundit Adrian Clarke, has had a disappointing campaign with other sides targeting his lack of pace.

Undoubtedly, the 6 foot 7 full-back is better defensively, but Hall provides a brilliant attacking threat down the left-hand side, with his ability potentially bringing a different dimension to the Magpies' setup.

As seen in the table, it's evident that Hall can produce more going forward than Burn, with his energetic and attacking playstyle more suited to Howe's style of play.

The "assured" 19-year-old, as described by journalist Fentou Tahiru, hasn't been given a fair chance since arriving at St James' Park, even amid Burn's ongoing woes.

Howe must start him against West Ham, with the youngster full deserving of an opportunity after his impressive international form over the break.

Hale End may have produced Arsenal’s perfect Ben White alternative

Arsenal are one of, if not the most in-form team in the Premier League at the moment.

Mikel Arteta's side have completely recovered from their festive period slump and are in the midst of a seven-game winning streak in the league.

It hasn't just been the points on the board that have impressed fans and pundits, but the manner in which the Gunners have collected them, with an almost comical aggregate score of 31-3.

A team that looked bereft of finishers just a couple of months ago suddenly can't stop scoring, and everyone is getting involved, including right-back Ben White, who scored the club's 10,000th goal on Monday night.

How White has performed this season

The 2023/24 season has been an odd one for White, as his form has generally mirrored the team's. He wasn't at his best for the first part of the season and struggled against Fulham home and away, earning WhoScored match ratings of 6.05 and 6.08, respectively.

However, that's about as far as it goes for his notably poor performances this season, and while he didn't blow anyone away before Christmas, he remained solid, which is what Arteta clearly loves about him.

In October, he told the media, "I am really happy with Ben. He's been a consistent player for us, he's always been available for us. He's developed in a great way as a centre-back and especially as a full-back because there were some question marks as well. He's got the character of a fighter."

In all, he's made 37 appearances across all competitions this season, scored two goals, provided two assists and been one of the first names on the team sheet. He's also starting to look like more of an attacking threat, as demonstrated by his brilliant goal against Sheffield.

There is no doubt that the former Brighton & Hove Albion gem is one of the most important players in Arteta's squad at the moment, but the Spaniard might have some extra competition for him next season as one of the club's loanees continues to tear it up in the Championship this year.

Why Brooke Norton-Cuffy could thrive in Arteta's system

The loanee in question is England U21 player Brooke Norton-Cuffy, who has been enjoying a brilliant season in the second tier with fellow London outfit Millwall.

The Pimlico-born full-back joined the Arsenal youth system as a youngster, rising through the various junior sides before earning his first loan move to Lincoln City in the 2021/22 season, where he scored one goal and provided one assist in 17 appearances.

The following season, he made 45 appearances across two short-term loans with Rotherham United and Coventry City. He made it to the play-off final with the latter and only just fell short against Luton Town.

The 20-year-old has been even more impressive for Millwall this season, scoring two goals and providing two assists in 31 appearances so far, primarily from the right side of midfield and being described as "fantastic" by manager Joe Edwards.

The "insane carrier", as described by data analyst Ben Mattinson, has proven to be a versatile player over the last couple of seasons, with 59 of his 129 appearances coming in the right of midfield, 37 coming at right-back, four at centre-back and the final three between midfield and the left side of the pitch.

This ability to step into several roles within the team is something Arteta likes in his full-backs, as demonstrated in White's transition from centre-back, Takehiro Tomiyasu's tendency to play on the right and left of the defence and even with Jakub Kiwior's recent run of games at left-back.

However, it's not just his versatility but also his physicality that could see the 20-year-old thrive in this current Arsenal team.

Mattinson has described his build and strength as "on another level", which could help the 5 foot 11 gem transition into top-flight football easier than some might expect.

Ultimately, Norton-Cuffy still has a lot to prove, but with how well he has done in the Championship, his positional versatility, and impressive physical attributes, there is a real chance he could be brought into the squad as a backup for White next season and to potentially compete for that starting spot down the line.

Didn't expect such a long stint, but happy with results – Edulji

Outgoing CoA member says her public differences with Vinod Rai weren’t anything personal, but just based on principles

Diana Edulji and Vinod Rai emerge from a CoA meeting•Getty Images

Among the first four members of the now outgoing Committee of Administrators (CoA), Diana Edulji has agreed with new BCCI president Sourav Ganguly’s view of giving priority to first-class cricketers in India. Edulji said the CoA was working towards that but “could not finish” it. The CoA is set to hand over the reins of the BCCI to the new office bearers on October 23.Speaking on her penultimate day in the BCCI after meeting the other two CoA members to wind up their duties, Edulji also looked back at her 33-month period, including their achievements and even the differences she had with Vinod Rai, saying she did not expect her “nightwatchman” duties to last so long.”Yes, a lot more work [has to be done], we were working on that but could not finish it,” Edulji said in Mumbai at the BCCI headquarters about the first-class circuit. “The players, the domestic structure does need a look in, so we can attract more cricketers to the game and let’s hope for the best.”Among the numerous issues Ganguly has already addressed even before officially taking over as the president, was “taking care of” the share of revenue the BCCI gets from the ICC, which reduced in 2017. When asked if the CoA was somehow responsible for the drop in the BCCI’s revenue share, Edulji said, “I would not want to comment on that because I would not want to say I have done something wrong or they are saying something wrong. Let’s see how it goes forward, all the best to them (new administrators).”Appointed by the Supreme Court in January 2017, Edulji and Rai had taken over, along with Ramachanda Guha and Vikram Limaye, to oversee the running of the BCCI. Guha later resigned while Limaye moved on, and Lt Gen (retd) Ravi Thodge joined the duo of Rai and Edulji earlier this year.”It was a good experience and a long journey,” Edulji said. “Didn’t think that the journey would last so long, but I am happy with the end result that elections and office bearers are coming back and BCCI will be run by them now.”No, not all (no regrets). We (Rai and Edulji) have had our differences and we aired it openly also. In any organisation, that works. And I have always batted on the front foot or bowled my armers well, but no nothing personal. It was just (on) principles that stands were taken and that’s it.”If I wanted to say something, I have always called a spade a spade and I don’t hold back. I have enjoyed my journey of 33 months, I never expected it to be so long, and as Mr Rai said, it was a nightwatchman, but this was more than a nightwatchman also. I’ve never heard of a nightwatchman scoring a double-hundred or triple-hundred (laughs). It was a great learning experience, handling BCCI and I hope I can do something more after I finish my cooling period (laughs).”Was the CoA able to implement all the reforms as they were defined by the Supreme Court and the Lodha Committee’s recommendations?”Yes and no,” she said. The CoA had taken over the supervision of the BCCI during troubled times after the board was hit by a betting scandal in the IPL and the matter was taken to the Supreme Court, but Edulji steered clear of blaming previous office bearers, under whom the board had landed in trouble.”I would not want to run down the people before, I wouldn’t say that we have done a better job than them,” she said. “Whatever role we had, we tried to complete our duties, let’s hope it goes forward and they take in the right spirit whatever we have done and move on. Life has to move on.”It is good that a [former] player [has become a president], he knows in and out what players’ require…when he was a player what he expected from BCCI, and now when he is sitting on that seat, I wish him all the best and let’s hope that he will do well and cricket should do well.”The final official CoA meeting with the three members lasted about two hours on Tuesday afternoon after which Lt Gen Thodge said they had finished implementing “almost” all of their tasks and responsibilities.”We’ve almost implemented things the way we wanted to,” Thodge said. “There are certain things to be done, our status report has been submitted to the court and we’ll see whatever comes.”Thodge also elaborated on the conflict of interest issue that’s been coming up time and again, and was even mentioned in the CoA’s 11th and final status report they submitted to the Supreme Court last week.”We (CoA and Ganguly) are in agreement with it and the last time when we had a meeting here, Sourav attended on video conference from Calcutta and we had lots of discussions on that issue,” Thodge said. “He’s aware, and it’s one thing that needs to be addressed otherwise we’ll have a problem in having anybody as a coach or for any BCCI appointment it will be an issue.”So to facilitate cricketers being involved in the cricket administration, it is essential that conflict of interest has to be relooked into, it’s not that it should totally go. Where the personal and financial benefits are there, those will be taken care of. But if the interest of cricket suffers because of conflict of interest then it needs to be addressed. I think he (Ganguly) has mentioned that same point because we had almost a three-hour discussion at that time and he’s got his views on that.”
