Aston Villa have made some impressive signings since Unai Emery took over as manager in October 2022. The Spaniard has been at the helm for four transfer windows now and has so far brought in 19 new faces. That included two signings in his first window, January 2023, where they signed Jhon Duran and Alex Moreno.

The most expensive player who moved to Villa Park during Emery’s reign at the club was Amadou Onana from Everton. The Belgian midfielder cost £50m and has been an instant hit in claret and blue, scoring twice already.

However, one of his best players at Villa was actually someone who was brought in before his time in the Midlands, Leon Bailey.

Jamaican winger Leon Bailey has had a challenging time at Villa Park. The 27-year-old started his career in England slowly, after signing from German outfit Bayer Leverkusen for £25m in 2021. Since Emery took charge of the club, he has looked like a completely different player.

Emery is famed for transforming careers that have previously seemed on the decline, and that certainly goes for the enterprising winger, who struggled in his first few seasons in claret and blue.

His first campaign saw him play 18 times in the Premier League under Steven Gerrard, getting just one goal and two assists. When Emery became manager, his numbers improved, and he recorded four goals and assists apiece in 33 top-flight games.

Last season, the 27-year-old looked like the player everyone saw tear things up for Leverkusen. His output was superb, playing 52 games in all competitions, scoring 14 goals and grabbing himself 14 assists.

It is perhaps unsurprising that Bailey’s transfer value has shot up since he has found his best form. As per Transfermarkt, the Jamaican is currently worth £35.4m, more than £10m than they paid for him over three years ago. It is a testament to his impressive performances that he is now worth so much.

However, he is not actually the highest-valued player at Villa Park, with Pau Torres, one of Emery’s most trusted players, among those who currently sit ahead of him.

It was a happy reunion for manager and player when the Villans signed central defender Torres from Villarreal last summer. Torres had previously played under his fellow Spaniard at Yellow Submarine, where they won the Europa League together in 2021.

Villa had to pay just £31.5m to sign the 27-year-old, who is undoubtedly now a key player at Villa Park, with journalist Dean Jones suggesting that he is "thriving" in English football.

Emery is a manager for whom he has played 147 times, over 100 times more than any manager in his career. With that in mind, it is perhaps unsurprising that Emery chose to reunite with one of his most trusted players over the years.

For the Villans alone, the Spain international has played 42 games, including 29 in the Premier League, missing a short period of time last term due to an ankle injury. So far this season, he has played 90 minutes in each of their three top-flight games.

As football analyst H pointed out on X, the former Villarreal defender is an “amazing” player with the ball at his feet and is one of the more progressive centre-backs in the Premier League, as the stats suggest.

According to FBref, he averaged 4.68 progressive passes and completed 1.53 progressive carries in the Premier League last season. That ranks him in the top 18% and 5% of English top flight defenders respectively.

Given the fact he has performed so well for the Villans over the past season, Torres’ value has risen quite substantially. He is now valued at £37.9m, as per Transfermarkt, showing a great investment on the £31.5m they spent on him originally.

It has certainly been an excellent piece of business by the Villans, and he will no doubt continue to be a key man under Emery.

Last week, former Wolves captain Mario Lemina got into an altercation with West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen after the final whistle. The Merseysiders continue to be linked with moves for various players in the current transfer window, with Hoffenheim and Germany forward Max Beier emerging as one option. The 21-year-old is a highly-rated attacking talent with great pace, and could feel that this summer is the right time to enjoy a new challenge.

Bringing in a new centre-back has to be seen as a primary piece of business for Liverpool before the new Premier League season gets underway, and Juventus ace Gleison Bremer is someone who Arne Slot personally wants to bring to Anfield in the coming weeks.

Further up the pitch, the Reds are said to have made an approach for Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres, who is coming off the back of a magnificent season with the Portuguese giants. The Swede scored 29 goals in 32 starts in the Primeira Liga, but looks to be heading towards Arsenal.

This summer has also seen Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon linked with Liverpool many times, having grown up a boyhood Reds supporter. The Magpies are insistent that the England international is going nowhere, but if he makes it clear that he wants to move to Anfield, they could find it hard to keep hold of him.

Now, a significant update has emerged regarding a current Liverpool player, with a big U-turn happening.

According to Football Insider, Liverpool are now "very unlikely" to let Wataru Endo leave the club this summer, despite reports suggesting otherwise. Recent reports have suggested that he would be allowed to move on, not suiting Slot's style of play, but the new Reds manager is "unwilling" to weaken his midfield, instead preferring the Japanese to stay put and bolster his options.

Keeping hold of Endo certainly wouldn't be a bad thing, even though he arguably feels limited in a technical sense, compared to elite-level defensive midfielders in the modern game. That being said, Jurgen Klopp was a big admirer during their one year together at Liverpool.

"He’s a machine. He is footballing-wise exceptional. His defensive brain is outstanding. He gives us a lot of freedom for a lot of things. Yeah, top development. Very helpful, very helpful."

At 31, Endo needs to be considered nothing more than a squad player if he does stay put, but with injuries so often hurting the Reds in recent years, so retaining his services would aid the depth at Slot's disposal.

That being said, if the Dutchman decides that he doesn't need the £50,000-a-week Japan international, supporters will likely see sense in the decision, given his age and the fact that another midfielder could still come in.

Ultimately, it feels like a win-win situation for Liverpool, with Endo producing some excellent performances in a Reds shirt, making 29 league appearances last term, but also not representing the future.

West Ham United are ready to make an offer for yet another player this summer as they look to continue their transfer blitz ahead of the upcoming Premier League season.

Meanwhile, two more new faces are expected to be confirmed on Monday. The first of those is Borussia Dortmund striker Niclas Fullkrug, who has already completed his medical ahead of a switch to east London in a move that is expected to set the Hammers back a fee of 32m euros (£27m).

The second of those is free agent Guido Rodriguez, who saw his time with Real Betis come to a close this summer and is now set to pen a two year deal at the London Stadium to bolster their midfield ranks. Now, they have been linked with a move for another midfielder.

He continued that form in the Scottish Premiership opener, grabbing an assist as his side thrashed Kilmarnock 4-0. And his form was hailed by Brendan Rodgers at the end of the 2023-24 season, with the ex-Liverpool boss dubbing him "phenomenal".

“He has been absolutely phenomenal really in his consistency. I think if we lacked anything as a team, it was probably that," Rodgers explained. As the Lilywhites weigh up moves for reinforcements, however, negotiations to free up some room on their wage bill are reportedly already well underway. According to Fabrizio Romano, Spurs have accepted Marseille's €13.5/14m (£11/12m) offer to sign Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg this summer after the Dane decided that he did not want to extend his current contract in North London.

The midfielder struggled for starts in Ange Postecoglou's debut campaign and the emergence of Gray and reported interest in Ramsey may of increased his game time problem, making this summer an ideal time to move on.

After making just eight Premier League starts last season, there are not many in the current Spurs squad who need a move away more than Hojbjerg. At 28 years old too, now is a better chance than ever to seal another big move in the form of Marseille. It's in Ligue 1 that the Dane can consistently show the form that earned him the praise of Postecoglou when he was on punditry duty for ITV at Euro 2024.

The Spurs boss praised his midfielder following Denmark's closely-fought 2-0 defeat against Germany at the last 16 stage, saying via HITC: “Denmark definitely would have got encouragement as much as what they did when they had the ball.

IPL has permitted families to travel and stay inside the bio-secure bubble, but franchises to take final decision

The IPL has laid out a rigorous testing process for players and support staff who will need to clear at least four tests along with a week-long quarantine before they can start training in the UAE. Details of the testing process and frequency feature among the draft document of standard operating procedures (SOPs), which the IPL shared with franchises on Monday.The SOPs include details on dos and don’ts during travel, lodging and training during the 53-day tournament, which is scheduled to be played at three venues in the UAE – Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah – between September 19 and November 10. The BCCI is yet to announce the tournament schedule as it awaits a formal nod from the Indian government.ESPNcricinfo understands that teams have been asked to travel with “minimum” contingents and not before August 20. Among the SOPs, the IPL has permitted families of squad members to travel to the UAE and stay inside the bio-secure bubble, but the final decision on that front will remain with each franchise. However, the IPL has made it mandatory that each team will need to have a medical doctor on board to help the franchise mitigate risks as well educate the squad during the Covid-19 pandemic.Testing protocolsAs per the draft SOPs, IPL has recommended to franchises that all members carry out two tests before their squads depart for the UAE. Those two tests will need to be done at 24-hour intervals as per the World Health Organisation norms. They will also need to be done before the player or coaching/support staff member assembles in the city where they will board the flight for the UAE. The validity of the second test result will need to last for at least four days (96 hours) including the date of landing in the UAE.The player or staff in question can only fly out if both those tests come out negative. Anyone infected will need to undergo the mandatory two-week quarantine period as per the guidelines of the Indian government. After that, the person will need to undergo a fresh set of two tests and clear them before joining the squad in the UAE.Once the squad lands in the UAE, all members are to undergo another test at the airport before heading to the team hotel. From this point, the IPL testing protocol will kick in.As per the protocol, every squad will undergo a mandatory seven-day quarantine in the team hotel. During this week every squad member will be tested thrice – on days 1, 3 and 6. Once all those results come back negative, the squad can start training.After that, all squad members will be tested on the fifth day of every week throughout the tournament.As far as the non-Indian players and staff are concerned, they will need to carry the negative result of the test carried out in the last 96 hours before arriving in the UAE.As per the local rules, during the tournament squads travelling to Abu Dhabi will need to carry negative test results carried out in the previous 48 hours. As per the IPL guidelines, if the weekly test result has expired during the course of travel to Abu Dhabi, squads will need to undergo a fresh test again.Testing positive during the tournamentIn such a scenario, it is understood that the person in question would need to isolate but outside the bubble, considering that aerosols – respiratory droplets – can easily be transmitted. That infected person would be put in a sanitised room within the same hotel. One of the guidelines recommends having a few rooms where the squad is staying to isolate any infected person(s).No stepping out of the bubbleIt is understood the IPL has made it clear no person can go in and out of the bio-secure bubble during the course of the tournament. Strict social distancing norms have been recommended, including squad members discouraged from having any close contact even within the bubble which includes moving between hotel rooms. Squad members have also been asked to wear masks outside their rooms at hotels and avoid any unnecessary movement.There will be exceptions. If an injured player needs to visit a hospital for X-rays or scans, then the guidelines suggest the movement be restricted to the clinic with minimal interaction with outsiders.One team per hotelAs per the guidelines all eight teams will stay in separate hotels. The franchises have been asked to book a hotel or resort exclusively for the squads with no outsiders allowed. If that is not possible, then IPL has recommended they stay somewhere with a separate wing, entrance and exit.
