Tottenham Want £24k-p/w "Immense" Dier Replacement

Tottenham Hotspur could be set to return to a familiar face, in order to bolster their side and kickstart a revolution…

What's the latest on Cameron Carter-Vickers to Spurs?

This latest rumour comes courtesy of the Sunday People (25/6; page 61), who suggest that Ange Postecoglou is keen on raiding his old club in order to improve his new one.

Whilst few of Celtic's side would improve this Spurs outfit, there are a select number who might offer fine options to fight for places within the Premier League.

One such example is Cameron Carter-Vickers, who is being eyed up by the Australian boss with a view to organising a reunion.

Given the USA international came through the youth ranks at N17, there are multiple layers of credibility to this story, that could suggest it is a move worth making.

However, the Scottish giants remain in a position of great power, given the 25-year-old still has three years left on his £24k-per-week deal at Celtic Park.

How good is Cameron Carter-Vickers now?

Whilst it is unlikely that many from the Scottish Premiership would come and immediately take English football by storm, the mediocrity of some of the starters for the Lilywhites have certainly merited being dismissed from the starting lineup.

Eric Dier is one such example, who endured a torrid campaign in which he was even branded "not good enough" by pundit Darren Ambrose.

eric-dier-tottenham-hotspur

Whilst he has been struggling, maintaining a 6.86 average Sofascore rating in the league, Carter-Vickers has been excelling in what is just his second year in Scotland.

His 7.14 average rating blows the 29-year-old out of the water, as he completely outperforms the England international as a ball-playing asset. Defensively the 6 foot 1 ace is arguably on par, with his 1.1 interceptions matching that of Dier's, and 2.9 clearances per game just falling short, via Sofascore.

It is worth noting that playing for the champions often leads to a defender having fewer defensive actions to make as he is instead conducting the play from the back, having the bulk of the possession.

When comparing their ability on the ball, this notion is emphasised. Their academy graduate maintained a 92% pass accuracy last season in the Scottish top flight, with his dribble success rate standing at a mouth-watering 100%. The former Sporting CP star could only dream of such figures, as he could muster just 86% and 60% in those areas respectively.

Opta's player analysis tool succinctly sums up how these are shortcomings for Dier in a neat chart too, as his dribbles attempted and defensive actions are left wanting.

it seems that this dud could easily be replaced by a man who once seemed to be the hottest property in north London.

Spurs favourite Jan Vertonghen had been particularly effusive in his praise for Carter-Vickers during his time at the club too, as he noted: "He's still young but he's an absolute beast. He's a real defender. He's strong one-on-one, in the air, he's not afraid and he can play from the back. That's the style the gaffer wants to see from him."

This echoes the sentiment of Chris Sutton, who also branded him "immense". All of this praise combines to compound the inevitable ditching of Dier.

An upgrade is needed, and by returning to a familiar face they could reignite his passion for the club and finally usher in a new age in north London.

Tons for Whiteman, Wells; Behrendorff takes five

Western Australia fought back on the third day in Perth, where they turned a 140-run first-innings deficit into a 135-run lead by stumps

Centuries to Jonathan Wells and Sam Whiteman gave Western Australia hope on the third day against Tasmania, where they turned a 140-run first-innings deficit into a 135-run lead by the close of play. Wells finished the day unbeaten on 107 and was batting with debutant D’Arcy Short, who was on 29, and their total had moved along to 5 for 275.The morning had started with Tasmania on 7 for 388, but that was effectively 8 for 388 as Alex Doolan, who had gone to stumps on 202, retired hurt overnight after being diagnosed with delayed effects of concussion from a blow to the helmet during his innings. The Tigers added only 14 to their total before being bowled out for 402, with Jason Behrendorff finishing with 5 for 80.Western Australia opener Cameron Bancroft then missed out on the chance to remind Australia’s selectors of his potential as a Test batsman when he was bowled by Simon Milenko for 11. Bancroft had managed only 2 in the first innings and has not posted a half-century in any of his six Sheffield Shield innings this summer.Milenko added the wicket of veteran Michael Klinger, who was caught behind for a duck, and Hamish Kingston chipped in with a couple of wickets to leave Western Australia in serious danger at 4 for 44. But then came a rescue mission from Wells and Whiteman, who put on 166 for the fifth wicket to ensure the Warriors stayed in the match.Wells was given an unusual reprieve on 13 when he was given out by umpire John Ward, who determined that the batsman had edged James Faulkner onto his pad and to slip. However, before Wells had left the field, Ward had second thoughts about his decision and reversed his call, deciding that in fact Wells had not edged the ball.Wells made great use of that chance and went on to score a long-awaited maiden first-class century, in his 39th match, and having debuted for Tasmania back in December 2008. An opening batsman who has often frustrated by not capitalising on his talent, Wells has finally broken through to score a Sheffield Shield hundred at the age of 28.At the other end, Whiteman brought up his third first-class century and perhaps gave Australia’s selectors something else to think about as they ponder wicketkeeping options and whether to persist with Peter Nevill. Whiteman, who played first-class games for Australia A this winter, was eventually lbw to Jackson Bird for 104, having already made 54 in the first innings.

Leeds Eyeing Managerial Swoop For 40 y/o Promotion Winner

An update has emerged on Leeds United and their plans to replace Sam Allardyce following their relegation down to the Championship.

What's the latest on Rob Edwards to Leeds?

According to The Sun, the Whites are eyeing up Luton Town boss Rob Edwards, alongside Lorient's Regis Le Bris, as a possible candidate for the job in an ambitious swoop.

It is stated that the club want to draw a line under their dismal season by placing their faith in a new manager who can start a long-term project at Elland Road, although it remains to be seen how open the Hatters gaffer would be to the move given his side's promotion to the top-flight.

The club have confirmed that Allardyce has departed Elland Road by mutual consent after failing to achieve survival in his four Premier League matches in charge at the end of the 2022/23 campaign, with an announcement on his successor said to be on the way in the 'coming week'.

How did Rob Edwards perform this season?

The Welshman was dismissed by Watford, despite only losing twice after ten matches in the Championship and went on to win the play-offs with Luton to secure their first-ever promotion to the Premier League.

He enjoyed a terrific campaign with the Hatters and could arrive in west Yorkshire, if they are able to convince him to make the move.

Edwards would surely be a big upgrade on the departed Allardyce, who has not had any experience managing a team competing at the top end of the table for over ten years.

Former Leeds boss Sam Allardyce.

His last top-six finish in any division was third-place with West Ham United in the Championship in 2011/12. The Englishman won 1.87 points per game in the second tier and has since been in the bottom half positions in the Premier League in six of his last eight seasons as a manager.

Edwards, whose football has been described as "intense" by journalist Josh Bunting, is relatively fresh into management and has won League Two with Forest Green Rovers in 2021/22 before, now earning promotion with Luton via the play-offs.

The 40-year-old, who football agency chief Adrian Bevington hailed as "articulate", averaged two points per match in the regular season with his current club across 25 outings to finish third in the league.

These statistics show that Edwards is a promising young coach who has already proven himself to be capable of instilling a winning mentality at both Forest Green and Luton, whereas Allardyce's experience is mainly fighting for survival in the bottom half of the Premier League.

This is why Leeds could land a big upgrade on the former Everton boss as they could bring in an up-and-coming manager who has the ability to mastermind an instant promotion back to the big time, instead of someone who does not have a proven, or recent, track record on that front.

Big West Ham Update Involving Moyes’ Future

West Ham manager David Moyes could still potentially be in charge next season, according to a fresh claim from reliable journalist Matt Law.

Is Moyes under pressure at West Ham?

The Hammers have had a disappointing season overall, and while their form has picked up a little of late – they beat Manchester United 1-0 on Sunday – they are still set to finish lower than many expected in the Premier League. For that reason, Moyes has found himself under pressure as manager, with the fanbase divided over whether he is the right man to take the club forward or not.

This recent run of form is certainly helping silence some of the Scot's detractors, but there is a feeling that a change could be required in the summer, in order for West Ham to be more of an attacking force next season. That being said, Moyes has a chance to win silverware in the coming weeks, with the first leg of their UEFA Europa Conference League semi-final against AZ Alkmaar arriving on Thursday.

West Ham boss David Moyes

Could Moyes remain in charge?

Taking to Twitter, The Telegraph's Law provided an update on Moyes' future, admitting that the idea of him still being West Ham boss next season is not out of the question:

"West Ham haven’t yet ruled out David Moyes starting next season as manager and winning the Conference League would give his hopes of doing so a huge boost."

This is an interesting update, and one will likely prove divisive among West Ham fans, given Moyes' aforementioned reputation among them currently. Should he go all the way in the Conference League, it would certainly make it hard for the owners to sack him, especially considering how few trophies West Ham have won in the modern era.

It could ultimately come down to that competition, with Premier League safety now all but guaranteed, and if the Hammers fall short in it, it would give them more of an excuse to make a managerial change in the summer. A younger boss with new ideas is certainly something that many want to see at the London Stadium, but Moyes has displayed his battling qualities in recent months, going from looking like a certain sacking to now hanging on to his job impressively.

These next few matches feel huge when it comes to his future, so it will be fascinating to see how the team performs in them, as Moyes desperately looks to stay in the job.

43 y/o Can Be Tottenham’s Next Pochettino

Tottenham Hotspur are still in the hunt for a new manager to permanently replace Antonio Conte in north London and will need someone to come in capable of arresting their slump on the field moving forward.

Spurs currently languish in seventh place in the Premier League standings and have a fight on their hands to secure continental qualification, which will surely enhance their chances of being able to appoint a high-calibre new manager to oversee a busy summer.

Several candidates have been linked with the role; however, former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann is no longer in the running for the position, as per Sky Sports.

Another contender for the vacancy that hasn't dropped out of the race is Feyenoord boss Arne Slot, who has all the requisite qualities needed to rebuild Tottenham and take them back to competing among the elite of English football.

What's the latest news involving Tottenham's manager chase?

As per The Sun, Feyenoord boss Arne Slot is still in the 'sights' of Tottenham as a potential option to become their new manager despite the Dutch giants' efforts to keep hold of him.

The 44-year-old is said to have been offered a new contract involving a significant pay increase and financial backing in charge of Feyenoord, who will ply their trade in the Champions League group stage next term due to winning the Eredivisie title.

Feyenoord comfortably saw off the likes of PSV Eindhoven and Ajax in their triumphant league campaign and have lost just once in 32 matches on their way to being crowned champions, as per Sky Sports.

However, speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Paul Brown has said that Tottenham now need to find their next Pochettino to help cultivate their squad rather than reverting to managers just based on their trophy record, with Roberto De Zerbi mooted.

Brown told FFC: "I think there are managers around too, I think De Zerbi deserves to be looked at by Spurs too really. I just think Spurs have gone down the route of trying to aim high at high-profile managers with a proven track record of winning the big prizes and it's ended in frustration, disappointment and equanimity. I think it's time to forget about the kind of managers that both Mourinho and Conte were and to go with someone a bit fresher, a bit younger. Spurs need the next Pochettino to start their next project with. It looks like it's going to be a rebuild for Spurs from me. I don't believe the squad really is good enough there to do a whole lot more than they have this season and it might be time to go in a new direction and get someone a bit younger, a bit fresher a bit hungrier."

De Zerbi has preferred a 4-2-3-1 formation during his time at Brighton so far, with a fairly respectable 1.67 points per match. However, this doesn't show just how well he has done on the coast, as the Seagulls have pulled off a number of magnificent results, which includes wins over Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool, with a European spot in their sights.

Indeed, like Mauricio Pochettino, De Zerbi has that ruthless streak which is something that Tottenham have been missing at times this season. As well as this, the high press that Pochettino loved to adopt at times is something that has worked wonders or De Zerbi this season, as the high block often results in his side winning the ball back and being put in promising positions.

De Zerbi has also gotten the very best out of a number of players, including Facundo Buananotte and Kaoru Mitoma, who both joined for under £6m respectively. Indeed, getting the very best out of cheap signings was something that Pochettino mastered during his time at Tottenham, as the likes of Eric Dier, Kieran Trippier, Ben Davies, Son Heung-min and Toby Alderweireld are just a number of players who shone in north London, with not one of them costing over £30m.

Pep Guardiola knew he would be a star of the managerial game, stating: "His impact in England will be massive in the future." Mikel Arteta is also a fan, as he stated: "He is someone I have followed." Jurgen Klopp described him as "very influential" (as per Sky Sports).

Of course, given Brighton's position, it remains to be seen as to whether he would make the switch to Tottenham, but regardless of positions, it seems a no-brainer for Daniel Levy to at least approach him.

Ball clocks up the miles on the England beat

Jake Ball has clocked up nearly 600 miles switching from his Test call-up from England to a couple of days county cricket at the Ageas Bowl – and there might not even be a Test debut at the end of it

The county summer is entering that period when players jump from one format to another, from one side of the country to another, via coach or carpool. Dubbed “silly season” by some, the next 30 days sees the NatWest T20 Blast and the Royal London Cup fight for schedule space with the County Championship which will take a two weeks hiatus at the beginning of June.Nottinghamshire, for example, played a Friday night T20 in Birmingham before coming down to the Ageas Bowl for their four-day tussle with Hampshire. Jake Ball, however, has notched a few more miles on the clock.Released from his maiden England squad after day two of the first Test, Ball was given permission to play in the first two days of this match, at which point he will make his way from Southampton to Durham (he is expected to be replaced in the Notts side for Brett Hutton). The roundtrip, from Test to Test, will be 576 miles.Even then, all that travelling might only result in a second “thanks but no thanks” in the space of a week. Still, as a Test hopeful, he is more than happy to do it all again and make The Proclaimers look like slackers in the process. On today’s evidence, it looked like he took plenty of breaks on the way down – maybe even a few dynamic stretches at Winchester Services to get going before the Ageas came in view.Bounding in from the Pavilion End like a returning hero charging back through the city gates, his opening delivery – the very first of the match – beat Michael Carberry’s outside edge. Two balls later, that same edge was found only for Chris Read to drop the chance, diving full stretch to his left. Only in hindsight can you say it could have been left to first slip, such was the movement of the ball in the last few feet before it clanged into Read’s gloves.Ball would eventually get his man, changing his angle from around the wicket and enticing a drive from Carberry, who had reeled himself in for 19 off 58 deliveries up until that point. He had the number of both of the hosts’ opening southpaws. One of the more noticeable aspects of Ball’s game is his ability to move the ball away and into a left-hander, from both around and over the wicket.Jimmy Adams in particular was caused a great deal of discomfort: when he wasn’t playing and missing on a spicy track, he was taking all sorts of blows to the glove and torso. His innings of 30 from 79 deliveries was reminiscent of the opening scene of Robocop.Hampshire, sitting bottom of Division One, have been ravaged by injuries and had to dip into the free agency and Kolpak markets. Two of their walking wounded, Reece Topley and Chris Wood, used the delay of the late afternoon downpour to check out the new media centre. They would be mistaken for thinking it was safer haven for staff up there: even the club’s press officer is facing a period on the sidelines having worn a yorker on the toe in a local league match. Somewhere beneath the Ageas Bowl sits an ancient Indian burial ground filled with deceased black cats.Sean Ervine, too, was sent limping to square leg after jabbing a Harry Gurney yorker onto the top of his foot. His pre-lunch walk to the crease was instigated by a fine spell by Luke Fletcher, who was rewarded by his persistence with the wickets of Adams (caught and bowled) and Liam Dawson (lbw, walking across his stumps) in successive balls. However, for all the feeling of an innings collapse, the rain delays – the first seeing no play at all in the afternoon session, the second breaking up a long evening – and an unbeaten partnership of 65 between Ervine and 20-year-old Tom Alsop sees Hampshire in a healthier state. Ervine got by on experience and, when dropped on 26 by Dan Christian at third slip off Gurney, compounded Notts’ misery by smashing a four through point the very next ball.By contrast, Alsop played with the freedom of a youngster coming in at number six: punching straight and square of the wicket for a relatively sprightly 32. Early on in his innings, he nearly rearranged Ball’s teeth with an uppish drive down the ground for two. As much as those at the ECB rate the Mansfield-born quick, he might have had trouble claiming a trip to the dentist as part of his fuel allowance.

Celtic’s £17k-p/w Genius Can Run Riot vs Rangers

With Scottish champions Celtic now just one game away from wrapping up the league title, the main focus for Ange Postecoglou and his Bhoys will be on clinching the treble, with Scottish Cup glory still on the cards.

Amid the prospect of securing a domestic clean sweep, standing in the Parkhead outfit's way will be rivals Rangers, with the two sides set to go head to head in Sunday's semi-final showdown at Hampden Park.

With the title now seemingly out of reach, the Light Blues will be looking to make amends by sealing passage to the showpiece with victory tomorrow, with Michael Beale having already tasted defeat in the League Cup final clash back in February.

Heading into a truly crucial fixture for the respective Old Firm foes, the Hoops have been given a major boost following an injury update regarding the stricken trio of Liel Abada, Reo Hatate and Jota, with three men believed to be in contention to feature.

In the case of the latter man, the Portuguese dynamo has been absent for last two Scottish Premiership games, although the 24-year-old will no doubt be chomping at the bit to yet again run riot against the Ibrox outfit.

Will Jota start against Rangers?

Having been held to a 1-1 draw at home to Motherwell last weekend, Postecoglou's men could seemingly be in need of a fresh injection of quality in the form of Jota, with the former Benfica an undoubted threat having racked up 11 goals and ten assist in 29 league games so far this term.

The £17k-per-week ace had notably recorded five goal involvements in his three previous league games prior to this recent injury absence, including registering a goal and an assist in the 3-2 victory over the Gers earlier this month.

The fleet-footed "genius" – as hailed by pundit Ally McCoist – notably skipped around the advancing Allan McGregor to net what proved to be the decisive goal in that most recent derby outing.

Celtic's Jota

The Lisbon native was also previously integral in the 4-0 win over Rangers back in September, scoring the game's second goal with a sensational, dink from the angle.

That inventive effort had seen the wide man expertly latch onto Matt O'Riley's threaded pass after bursting away from the visiting defence, with the Gers' backline likely to dread coming up against the lively asset again this time around.

Having simply been a "revelation" in Glasgow since his arrival on an initial loan deal in the summer of 2021, as per pundit Alex McLeish, Jota could become an even greater cult figure by making the difference again tomorrow afternoon.

Liam Palmer Wants To Stay At Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday defender Liam Palmer wants to stay put at the club beyond this summer, according to an update from reliable journalist Alex Miller.

Is Palmer having a good season?

The Owls have had an excellent season overall, although their current stuttering form is threatening to see them fall short at the final hurdle. Darren Moore's side haven't won any of their last five games in League One, going from having a comfortable lead at the top of the table to now potentially missing out on automatic promotion.

There have still been numerous excellent performers for Wednesday throughout the campaign, however, and Palmer has arguably been one of the standouts, proving to be effective as both a right wing-back and a centre-back. The Scot has started 36 league games this season, scoring four goals for good measure, and his experience is going to be vital between now and the final game, whether that be in the regular season or the play-offs.

However, Palmer's current Owls deal expires at the end of the current campaign, and as of now, he hasn't signed an extension. A key update has now been delivered regarding the 31-year-old's future at Hillsborough.

Will Palmer sign a new Owls deal?

Taking to Twitter, Miller said that Palmer intends to sign a new deal before he is out of contract, although it isn't necessarily close to being agreed currently:

"Liam Palmer is one of several Wednesday players whose future beyond this summer is not yet confirmed. He wants to stick around, but right now his focus is elsewhere."

It is arguably vital that the Owls tie Palmer down to an extension in the coming months, with the eight-cap Scotland international someone who remains an important player moving forward. His aforementioned versatility can be priceless at times, and he is a safe pair of hands wherever he plays, averaging 1.5 tackles and 1.3 clearances per game in League One this season.

At 31, he potentially still has plenty to offer the Owls, so extending his stay at Hillsborough for a while longer makes complete sense, ahead of what is hopefully a spell back in the Championship next season, assuming Wednesday can get over their current slump.

Judging by Miller's claim, the fact Palmer's focus is elsewhere suggests he also has a superb mentality as the League One run-in continues. Indeed, stating his intentions to stay in South Yorkshire allows him and the club to deal with the more immediate matter at hand, which is a return to the second tier.
