2/10 Man Utd dud who made just 3 passes all game is letting Ten Hag down

Manchester United failed to capitalise on their 4-2 victory over Sheffield United on Wednesday, by succumbing to a 1-1 draw against Burnley at Old Trafford in the Premier League.

Both sides had plenty of chances in the first half, with United controlling large amounts of the play, going close a couple of times; Alejandro Garnacho skied a shot over the bar, and Bruno Fernandes rattled the woodwork with a well-struck volley.

The Clarets also enjoyed some sustained periods of possession, although they also failed to capitalise, with Andre Onana making a superb save to deny Lyle Foster.

Erik ten Hag's side broke the deadlock eventually, thanks to Antony’s first Premier League goal of the season, a well-taken finish which he slotted low and hard into the bottom corner. However, just eight minutes later, Burnley drew level from the penalty spot through Zeki Amdouni.

A clumsy header by Casemiro and a foul by Onana gave the Swiss attacker the chance from 12 years, which he took well into the bottom right corner, to earn a crucial point for Burnley.

It was certainly a tough outing for United, although one of their stars in particular had an afternoon to forget at Old Trafford.

Andre Onana’s stats vs Burnley

It was certainly a mixed bag of a performance for United’s number 24 Onana. The aforementioned save to deny Foster was superb and was one of six that he made according to Sofascore, including four from shots inside the box.

However, the Cameroonian’s foul on Amdouni, who converted the penalty moments later, was a clumsy mistake. Granted, he was not helped by Casemiro’s poor clearances, but it was a rashly attempted punch, which was just a flailing of his arms, to give away the foul.

Aside from that, it was a good performance from Onana. Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News gave the former Ajax and Inter goalkeeper a 6/10 on his post-match ratings, describing his showing as “a matchwinning performance” up until he gave away the penalty.

As usual, Onana always likes to be involved in the game and had 56 touches altogether, which was only bettered by four United players. The stopper also persisted with the long-ball style of playing out from the back that he has been instructed to play this season.

Onana completed seven long balls, in total completing 30/45 passes. In particular, he found one United teammate four times, which is more than any other player on the pitch managed.

Rasmus Hojlund’s stats vs Burnley

The man in question here is Rasmus Hojlund, who did indeed receive more passes from Onana than any other player, with four, as per Statman Dave on X. The Dane had just 14 touches all game and got no service whatsoever.

It was such a tough afternoon for United’s number 11 that he did not even manage to register a shot on goal, never mind a shot on target. This is perhaps surprising given Fernandes created an incredible nine chances. Hojlund also completed just three out of the six passes he attempted.

Football Insider highlighted Hojlund's lack of service during their post-match ratings, in which the publication gave the Dane a 2/10, saying he was "isolated and starved of service."

It has been a tough period for Hojlund of late, whose goal against Sheffield United last time out was his first since a brace away to Luton on February 18th. Since that game, he is on a run of one goal in ten games for club and country.

That is a run Hojlund will be looking to change a week on Monday, with United’s next game a trip to Crystal Palace. The Red Devils have a tough run of games coming up, and with an FA Cup Final showpiece at the end of the season, are certainly hoping to go on a strong run and gain momentum before the big Manchester Derby showdown at Wembley.

Farke could fire Leeds to the autos by dropping "invisible" 3/10 star

Leeds United are back in action in the Championship this evening as they travel away from Yorkshire to take on Middlesbrough at the Riverside stadium.

The Whites have the opportunity to move up to second in the division with a win over Boro tonight, as Ipswich Town's clash with Coventry has been rescheduled for later in the week.

Leicester City's win over West Bromwich Albion on Saturday means that Leeds cannot move to the top of the division, but they can put the pressure on their rivals by going into the automatic promotion places.

Daniel Farke's team are chasing a return to the Premier League and a win over Michael Carrick's side would be another step in the right direction.

Daniel Farke before a game with Leeds United.

Leeds have failed to win any of their last three matches in the Championship – the most-recent being a 1-0 defeat to Blackburn Rovers – and the German boss may look to make some changes to his starting XI in order to return to winning ways.

One player who must be ruthlessly ditched from the lineup, in order to fire the team back into the automatic places tonight, after an underwhelming display last time out against John Eustace's team is centre-forward Joel Piroe.

Joel Piroe's 3/10 display against Blackburn

LeedsLive reporter Beren Cross handed the attacker a dismal match rating of 3/10 against Rovers after Farke selected the number nine to lead the line ahead of Patrick Bamford and Mateo Joseph.

Piroe was provided with a huge opportunity to prove to the manager that he has what it takes to start for the Whites during the crucial games during the promotion run-in, and any potential play-off games that could be to come.

Instead of grasping his chance with two hands, the Dutch striker – as described by Cross – 'brought nothing' to the attack during his time on the pitch.

As you can see in the table above, the left-footed attacker offered very little at the top end of the pitch for Leeds, with zero shots on target and zero 'big chances' created.

Both of his attempted shots were blocked by opposition players, which suggests that his shot selection was poor, and his two key passes created a meagre 0.03 xA, which speaks to the low-quality of chances the forward provided his teammates with.

Overall, Piroe did not have a big impact on the game with his anonymous performance in the final third, which was not a huge surprise given his form of late.

Joel Piroe's season in numbers

The Dutch striker has only scored two goals in his last 17 matches in all competitions for Leeds, and has only scored two open play goals – three including penalties – in 23 games since Christmas.

Analyst Louorns on X claimed that Piroe is "invisible" 90% of the time earlier this season, and his poor statistics – in terms of goals and his all-round contributions on the pitch – back that up.

It has been a barren run for the 24-year-old attacker, who was signed on a permanent deal from league rivals Swansea last summer, and one that does not look likely to change any time soon, given his display against Blackburn last time out.

Leeds duo Ethan Ampadu and Joel Piroe.

Alongside his struggles in front of goal, Piroe has also struggled to provide the team with much outside of finishing. He currently ranks 11th in the squad for key passes per game (0.7) – below Ethan Ampadu, Junior Firpo, and Glen Kamara, among others.

The 6 foot 1 dud has also lost 62% of his duels in the Championship this season, including 70% of his aerial battles, and this shows that opposition players find it far too easy to get the better of him.

Despite his height and large frame, defenders have had plenty of joy against Piroe in one-on-one duels to win possession back for Leeds, which is why he is not a reliable outlet for Farke in the number nine position.

As you can see in the table above, the Dutchman has not been completely ineffective in the final third throughout the entire season, as he has still plundered 12 goals from 12.45 xG – only slightly underperforming his expected tally.

However, his current run of form since Christmas and his 3/10 display against Blackburn suggest that Farke should drop him for an alternative option against Boro tonight to give the team the best chance of picking up all three points and returning to the automatic promotion places.

The alternative options to Joel Piroe

The German tactician does have a number of players who could step in to take Piroe's place at the top end of the pitch against Carrick's men on Teeside.

One option could be to move Georginio Rutter into the number nine role, from his usual number ten position, and then bring Dan James or Jaidon Anthony in, which would allow Wilfried Gnonto to play centrally.

Georginio Rutter

The lesser-seen Joe Gelhardt, who has only played eight games in the Championship this season, is also a player with centre-forward experience, but is unlikely to be selected for such a big game given his lack of action so far.

Bamford appears to be the obvious candidate to replace Piroe as the English forward has been trusted by Farke for much of 2024 so far.

As you can see in the table above, the former Boro man has been wasteful in front of goal in the Championship this season – underperforming his xG and missing more 'big chances' than he has scored goals.

Another option for Farke could be to unleash Joseph from the start for the first time in the league. The 20-year-old striker has scored one goal in 18 appearances as a substitute.

He also scored two goals in his last start for the first-team against Chelsea in the FA Cup at Stamford Bridge, which is why the gem could be an exciting player to bring in to offer more in the final third than the other options.

Whichever direction the manager decides to go in, dropping Piroe is the first step he must take on the road to firing Leeds back into the top two places tonight, due to the Dutch dud's lack of form in the final third.

The two-time FIFA Best Women’s Goalkeeper has never been one to back down from a challenge, so can be expected to be multi-lingual in a matter of weeks. Time is still on her side, with PSG not due to start their 2024-25 campaign until September 21 – with a number of friendly fixtures, including one against West Ham, to be taken in prior to that.

Rangers hit the jackpot on Beale signing who’s worth more than Sima

Glasgow Rangers saw their final game prior to the international break called off due to a waterlogged pitch, yet the extra recovery time may be a blessing in disguise for Philippe Clement.

The Ibrox side have been ravaged by injuries over the previous few weeks and while they have continued their impressive form, the break comes at precisely the right time.

January signing Oscar Cortes suffered an injury against Kilmarnock last month which has since required surgery, and he is expected to be out long-term, a significant blow for the club.

Oscar Cortes

The youngster has already scored once for the Gers and grabbed two assists, looking lively in his appearances, but he isn’t the only player who is out injured.

Abdallah Sima – scorer of 15 goals this term – has been missing since January, while minor injuries have hampered the likes of Todd Cantwell, Nico Raskin and Rabbi Matondo during spells in 2023/24.

The volume of games that the club has had to play obviously has not helped matters, but with a break of nearly two weeks providing some much-needed respite, Clement may be able to get some of his players match fit and ready to attack the final few weeks of the season.

One player who has endured his fair share of bad luck this season is Danilo, as the new signing has been out since December.

Danilo’s injury woes for Rangers

During a clash against Hearts in December, the Brazilian striker suffered a knee injury which didn’t look as serious as first anticipated.

Following the tie, Clement delivered an update on his injury, and it was not good news for the club, saying:

"Danilo has a problem with his knee because of a bad tackle in the game, an unlucky situation, part of football. Because of contact, he had a problem with his knee. The chances are he requires surgery so yes, it could be long-term.”

Glasgow Rangers striker Danilo.

Indeed, the player has not been seen since and Clement has had to rely on Cyriel Dessers as his main centre-forward option over the last few months.

Prior to this knee injury, Danilo had suffered a fractured cheekbone during a match against St Johnstone in September.

The former Ajax striker nodded the Gers in front against the Saints but collided with Liam Gordan in the process and came off worse for wear.

Rangers striker Danilo.

He was out for nine games and it disrupted any momentum he had achieved during his first few weeks at the club.

It's safe to say he has not had the best of luck since moving to Glasgow, yet during his brief time on the pitch between the two injuries, Danilo has shown his class.

Danilo’s statistics at Rangers

Michael Beale had the summer transfer window to fill the void left by departing favourites Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos, and he spent rather lavishly in the process.

Cyriel Dessers cost £4.5m, Sam Lammers joined for a fee of £3m, but it was Danilo who was the big money signing of the transfer window, costing the Gers around £6m from Dutch side Feyenoord, and it looked as though the heir to Morelos had been found.

For whatever reason, however, Beale started the striker just twice before he was sacked at the start of October, with Danilo bagging three times for the Gers under the Englishman, but it wasn’t until Clement arrived that he began to be trusted more in the starting XI.

Slowly but surely, the 24-year-old gained confidence and started to look like a £6m striker. A late winner against Hearts proved to be the catalyst as he then shone during the following Premiership tie against Dundee.

The Light Blues won the match 5-0 in what was a dominating away performance, while Danilo was in wonderful form.

Not only did he get on the scoresheet, but the Brazilian grabbed an assist, registered nine total shots, succeeded with 100% of his dribble attempts and made four key passes, demonstrating how impressive he was.

In truth, the striker could have scored more than once, as he missed a staggering four big chances, and it was certainly an opportunity missed to add to his goal tally.

That goal was his last for the Gers prior to suffering a knee injury, as he subsequently missed the League Cup final against Aberdeen, along with the previous three European ties.

Despite his injury issues, he still ranks sixth among the squad for goals and assists in the top flight (five), while also ranking first for scoring frequency (a goal every 133 minutes), first for shots on target per game (1.5) and fifth for goals (four), clearly showcasing his worth when given an opportunity.

Additionally, his value has also risen since joining last summer.

Danilo’s market value at Rangers

The centre-forward was lauded as having a “bright” showing against Sparta Prague by Clement in October and according to Football Transfers, his market value has risen to €9.4m (£8m) and it looks as though it will continue to rise, despite him missing large chunks of the season.

For context, such a fee would make him the second highest-valued player in the entire squad, ahead of the likes of Sima (£6.7m) and James Tavernier (£5.3m), but behind Wolves loanee Fabio Silva (£11m).

Market Movers

Football FanCast's Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club's star player or biggest flop worth today?

It is clear that the Ibrox side have struck gold on the player, therefore. The 5 foot 8 machine may have cost £6m, a significant fee for Beale to spend, but it already looks justified considering his current valuation.

Hopefully, he regains full fitness in the next few weeks and begins to take steps to make his way back into the first-team fold, especially with the title race going right down to the wire.

Clement urgently needs an out-and-out number nine who can score from anywhere, instead of having to rely on Dessers to be the main source of goals.

Going through a rigorous pre-season ahead of the 2024/25 campaign could see the former Feyenoord striker emerge as one of Clement’s key players next term, and he could certainly spearhead the team to more trophies.

If he does, then they will no doubt make a huge profit on the player, and they can rinse and repeat the cycle to establish a player trading model at Ibrox.

Eoin Morgan wants fringe T20 World Cup hopefuls to learn – fast

Newcomers can’t always rely on senior players, England skipper says

You can’t be blindsided or be stubborn enough to not take in good information.”It has been a great learning day for us and hopefully the guys take in the information and learn from that, hopefully pretty quickly. They have to, and they have to play games so in situations like that you have to throw them out in the middle of it, you can’t say your senior players always have to support them and nurture them.”Sam Billings, with 24 T20I caps, was run out by Colin Munro in a moment the Black Caps hailed as a turning point and James Vince fell a short time later, having reached 49 off 39 deliveries. From there only Tom Curran reached double figures with 14 not out as the tourists managed just 166 for 7 chasing 181.”With a lot of wickets in hand you’d expect us to win,” Morgan said. “Certainly we did, we were in control pretty much up until that point. The guys that came in, we didn’t do the simple things right.”We didn’t establish a partnership, we didn’t hit with the wind, things that the Black Caps did throughout. We do have to get better and calmer in those situations and when we’re chasing.”Tom Banton – one of the six England debutants for the series alongside Matt Parkinson, Sam Curran, Saqib Mahmood, Lewis Gregory and Pat Brown – made 18 off 10 in his first international match before he was bowled trying to ramp Blair Tickner in a knock that pleased Morgan.”He’s a free-spirited guy who plays expansive cricket, and we want him to do that,” Morgan said. “He gets out playing one of his strongest shots. We’ll encourage him to keep doing that.”Banton’s fellow opener Dawid Malan was England’s top scorer for the second match running, following his 39 off 29 balls in the second match – which England also lost – with 55 off 34. Malan expressed his disappointment at not being able to build on a strong start in Wellington and Morgan thought he would feel the same after his latest innings in Nelson.”It’s extremely disappointing for him,” Morgan said. “He’s one of the only opening batters that ever talks about seeing the majority of the innings through and being there at the end. It will hurt him.”England must win the penultimate fixture in Napier on Friday to keep the five-match series alive with New Zealand leading 2-1.

'Nail in the coffin of football' – Real Madrid blasted by Bayern Munich chief over 'greedy' transfer of Kylian Mbappe from PSG

    WHAT EBERL SAID

Speaking to Suddeutsche Zeitung, Eberl said [via AS]: "You can always become more of a money-grubbing person, but everyone who is a money-grubbing person will gradually become the nail in football's coffin. If all the money goes out [of the market] at some point, then there will be nothing left for us to do business with. We're talking about hundreds of millions. That's too much and at some point you get the feeling that it will burst.

"At some point it will be oversaturated and Saudi Arabia will come along. That doesn't feel very good. I have to say that to be fair, but that's the market right now. The money is leaving the market. No club benefits from it. Players, families, agents, everyone benefits, but not the clubs. In the past, at least clubs profited. The money stayed in the cycle and that will become less and less now."
