Newcastle join Tottenham in race to sign Leeds youngster Ollie Pickles

Newcastle United have now joined the race to sign a young talent also wanted by Tottenham, it has emerged.

Magpies targeting young core

Newcastle United and Eddie Howe may be heading through a tough spell on Tyneside, but the club are moving to ensure that their future remains bright.

The Magpies are currently marooned in 10th in the Premier League, and European football next season looks to be unlikely after a raft of injuries and some poor form have seen them slip down the table.

That will bring with it financial fair play concerns heading into this summer's transfer window, and there is already speculation that one of their stars may have to depart ahead of the new campaign.

However, there is certainly an eye to the future with their recent additions, with Newcastle having aimed to sign players before their peak years, with the hope that they will grow into stars of the future and be worth significantly more than their initial outlay suggests.

That is certainly proving the case, with the likes of Valentino Livramento and Anthony Gordon proving astute purchases and being bolstered by home-grown pair Lewis Miley and Elliot Anderson, while the likes of Garang Kuol and Yankuba Minteh gain experience out on loan.

And it appears that idea has trickled down to the youth setup, with one man firmly in their sights ahead of the summer.

Leeds gem Pickles in Premier League demand

The Magpies have joined the race for highly-rated midfielder Ollie Pickles. The 16-year-old talent is yet to make his senior debut for current club Leeds United, but has racked up 11 appearances for the youth set up and is highly thought of within Elland Road and the Thorp Arch academy.

His style has been compared to previous Newcastle United target Kalvin Phillips, who also came through the ranks in Yorkshire before making a £45m move to Manchester City, where his career has since flat lined.

West Ham midfielder Kalvin Phillips

And according to TalkSPORT, the Magpies are stepping up their interest in Pickles in a bid to strengthen their own academy, and are ready to go to war with Tottenham for his signature.

It remains to be seen whether or not that admiration will turn into anything more substantial this summer, and that may well depend on the outcome of Leeds' promotion campaign.

As it stands, they are on course for a return to the top flight via the automatic promotion spots in the Championship, and higher opportunities with his boyhood club could prove too tantalising an offer for Pickles to turn down.

Should he want out of Thorp Arch though, it appears that Newcastle have positioned themselves well to ensure he finds his way to St James' Park, provided they can ward off competition from Tottenham.

Shorter BPL 'more fun' than BBL – Andre Russell

Andre Russell prefers the “shorter” and “more fun” Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) to Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL). The two tournaments often occupy the same space in the global cricket calendar, forcing players to choose one or the other.Russell is set to play for the Rajshahi Royals in the 2019-20 BPL season, and was unveiled as their captain on Tuesday.”This tournament is more fun,” Russell said, during Rajshahi’s jersey launch on Tuesday. “It is shorter [than the BBL]. So less time away from home. I get a lot of love here. The hospitality and everything is amazing. You get a warm welcome on this side of the world. I never really think twice.”Russell has been a BPL regular, and winning the title twice, with Comilla Victorians in 2015-16 and Dhaka Dynamites in 2016-17. He has featured in three BBL seasons too, but hasn’t played in the Australian competition since 2016-17. Last year too, Russell chose the BPL over the BBL, and played 15 matches for Dhaka Dynamites.ESPNcricinfo understands that Rajshahi Royals are paying Russell slightly more than the USD 170,000 offered by a BBL side for the 2019-20 season.Russell said the changes to the BPL this year – the BCB owns all seven teams – piqued his interest in signing up for the BPL once again.”Once I heard this was happening – new rules, new teams, new owners, new franchise – I was interested to be part of it. I wanted to get the ball rolling.”I am honoured to be given the responsibility of leading the team. Regardless, I always look at myself as a player in the heat. I have a very big role in any team I play for. It is going to be something new for me outside the Caribbean. I have led Jamaica Tallawahs before. It will be interesting and I am up for a challenge.”Rajshahi will begin their BPL season on December 12, the second day of the tournament, with a match against Dhaka Platoon. Their squad contains plenty of experienced cricketers including Shoaib Malik, Ravi Bopara and Russell himself.”I won’t say we have the best squad but we have a good team on paper,” Russell said. “It is a good start for any captain, coach and any team. We want to use the experience of each player, which will put us in the right foot.”We have Shoaib Malik, myself, Ravi Bopara and [Hazratullah] Zazai and [Liton] Das at the top. We have a few good local talents. I have been watching videos, seeing what they can do. We have a balanced squad including local and international fast bowlers. We have good options.”Unlike Rajshahi, Sylhet Thunder don’t have too many big names to call upon, and are seen as underdogs leading up to the new season. Their coach Herschelle Gibbs said they are happy to be the unknown quantity in the tournament opener against Chattogram Challengers, but pointed to one gap in their line-up.”If you fly under the radar it is nice to get one out of the way. There will be nervous excitement and energy for everybody including me,” Gibbs said. “Once tomorrow comes, if you play with freedom, you can achieve anything irrespective of who play against.”There is no guarantees in the game which is fantastic. You do not need big names. You need one guy to fire. The unknown is a good place to be in because no other teams know the unknown.”As far as our skillset is concerned, we have got a variety of spinners. We have [Krishmar] Santokie from West Indies as our only left-arm seamer. Unfortunately, we do not have top order left-handed batsman. We might be little be short there. We have to do with what we have.”

A good team, not a great one yet – Langer

Having set out upon a gruelling twin tour of the UK for the World Cup and the Ashes, he witnessed a pair of strong and successful campaigns without either fully satisfying

Australia’s coach Justin Langer wore a rueful look on his face as his players lifted the urn at The Oval, having lost to England by some distance in the final Test and so failed to win the series. Having set out upon a gruelling twin tour of the UK for the World Cup and the Ashes, he witnessed a pair of strong and successful campaigns without either fully satisfying. With the benefit of a few moments’ reflection, Langer reckoned that while there had been great improvement in the Australian team over his 16 months in charge so far, there would need to be a greater level of ruthlessness if they are to graduate from World Cup semi-finalists and Ashes retainers to consistent series and tournament winners.”It’s something we’re getting better at, how we back up after a win,” Langer said in reference to how the Edgbaston and Old Trafford victories had been followed by a draw at Lord’s and defeat at The Oval. “That probably comes with the maturity of the group as well. It’s ok to fight back when you are underdogs and it’s one of those Australian things – we love the underdog tag. To fight back from a tough loss is admirable and I said how proud I was with everyone for that.”But also over the last couple of years we haven’t necessarily performed at our best after a win. Really good teams do that. We didn’t do that too well after the first Test at Lord’s. We didn’t do it after this Test. There have been some Test series over the last couple of years where the team hasn’t been able to. I think that’ll be part of the maturity of our side. If you probably think about it, the way we were in this series, we aren’t a great team yet.”We are a good team, we are a maturing team. We have got some great players in it. But we’re aspiring to be a great cricket team. You got to work hard and get consistent results to achieve that. That comes from experience and learning how to win. That comes with players individually getting more experienced and the team working together. Those sort of things evolve I think. I think back to the start of my career, in 1993, we had some senior players but we didn’t necessarily win all the time. And that we learnt to do through Steve Waugh’s era. We learnt to be ruthless but we also had seven or eight great players and a number of very good players and a couple of good ones like me. But that takes time to develop and evolve.”Getty Images

Something that Langer will have to balance coming home from England will be how the Test team will have perhaps three spots settled in the batting line-up for the home summer, but also how to pick David Warner back up after he was thoroughly beaten by Stuart Broad across this series. Warner was not alone as a struggling left-hand batsman at the top of the order, but he is the one player in that group who possesses a career record suggesting that it was a temporary problem rather than a defining one.”I think, talking frankly, he let Stuart Broad get into his head and he thought way too much about it,” Langer said. “I’ve seen it before, even with the great players, every now and then they have a series – and I’m talking about the all-time great players – they have a series where…I remember Gilly (Adam Gilchrist) with Andrew Flintoff, I remember seeing Steve Waugh sit on the team bus in South Africa and the guy had been a run machine for so long, he got out just before stumps and I, in a sick sort of way, thought it was the best thing I’d ever seen.”I didn’t think great players had lean runs. I used to have lean runs all the time but even great players have lean runs and I’m sure David – we know he’s a very good player, there’s no question about that – but he had it tough, particularly against Stuart Broad. I used to have it against Murali (Muttiah Muralitharan) and I couldn’t solve the issue and it’s so hard when you try to problem solve and then you’re in the middle of a big series trying to solve the puzzle.”In this instance I don’t think David solved the puzzle, and he’ll be first to admit that, he’ll probably be very relieved he gets on the Qantas flight in a day’s time and doesn’t have to face Stuart Broad for a while I reckon. But he is certainly, there’s plenty of upside still to his batting. I’ve learned over a long period you never write off champion players, it doesn’t matter what sport, you never write off champion players. They tend to come good, don’t they? So he’s had a tough series, no doubt about that, but he’s also a champion player so usually with champion players they get a bit more time to come good.”Langer was gratified by the displays of Steven Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon, while also appreciating how Matthew Wade had battled his way through the trials of the series to notch a pair of book-ending centuries. “We cut to the chase, I thought our bowling throughout this series was absolutely world-class. I think we talked throughout about the maturity and healthy group of fast bowlers that we were able to have on the park,” he said. “The bowlers were brilliant. Nathan Lyon as well and the way they all stepped up at different times.Getty Images

“But we didn’t bat well enough. I said this at the start of the series that the team that bats well will win the series. I said it consistently enough and we didn’t bat well enough. That’s the truth. I mean Steve Smith was obviously outstanding. What a pleasure to watch. He’s a brilliant young man but what a pleasure to watch him bat. I thought the development of Marnus was exciting. He worked so hard. He’s a bit in the Steve Smith mould of the players that you love to see do well. He worked so hard.”The way Matthew Wade scored two centuries in this series, obviously including today. We talked about him knocking so hard to get an opportunity. He did that and then to back up with two Test centuries in an Ashes series showed great fight and great skill. I loved Matthew Wade’s footwork. But we certainly fell short in other areas and we need to work on that.”In addition to ruthlessness, Langer had a simple goal based on what he had seen in England in 2019 – find a batting line-up that will better capitalise on the current riches in Australia’s bowling stocks. “With this exciting fast bowling group we’ve got, if we start batting well we’ll win a lot of games of cricket,” he said. “We go to Australia to play two pink ball Test matches, against two good sides in Pakistan and New Zealand, two day-night Test matches will be exciting.”There’s a real challenge for young Australian batters, the ones who want to step up and score lots of runs and work hard on their footwork patterns and techniques and ability to score runs it’s a pretty exciting time. That’s a big challenge.”

Six players to watch in the Marsh One-Day Cup

Will Pucovski (Victoria)The defending champions are flush with Australian stars including the ODI and T20I captain Aaron Finch, Glenn Maxwell, James Pattinson, and they will be led by Peter Handscomb who also played in the World Cup semi-final. But the Victorian hierarchy are keen to give Pucovski an extended run in the top order in white-ball cricket after proving his incredible talent at Shield level. He only played three one-day games for Victoria in 2017 for scores of 15, 0 and 5, and didn’t play in Victoria’s triumph last season, but he got an opportunity to open in two games for Australia A on the recent white-ball portion of the tour of England. Batting alongside Matthew Wade in two matches against Gloucestershire he scored 51 and 137. He will get the chance to settle in among a very experienced top order with the opportunity to add ball-striking and tempo skills to his ability to bat long periods and absorb pressure, which he has already displayed at Shield level.Ben McDermott (Tasmania)There will be plenty of attention and excitement on young quick Riley Meredith after his displays in the BBL for the Hobart Hurricanes last season, but there is some excitement around McDermott’s progression as a white-ball player. He played eight T20Is for Australia late last year on the back of a standout domestic 50-over tournament where he made two centuries and a 76 to help Tasmania reach the final. He remains earmarked as a player of national interest after touring with the National Performance Squad to India in August. He will bat in the top order for Tasmania and will also keep wicket in the first couple of games while Wade is rested following an arduous Ashes campaign. McDermott was a wicketkeeper as a junior in Queensland but has never kept for Tasmania. He did some keeping on the NPS tour recently.Matt Renshaw (Queensland)There is a perception of Renshaw, rightly or wrongly, that he is a long-form specialist. But he is slowly starting to shed that tag and there is palpable interest and intrigue from up north as to what he could do in the Marsh Cup. His one-day numbers don’t jump off the page, with an average of 36.47 and a strike-rate of 86.06, but he made his first one-day hundred for Kent during his brief stint in England in the early part of the winter. Last season, at the back end of the BBL, he produced a stunning innings in the middle order for Brisbane Heat, smashing 90 not out off 50 balls against Adelaide Strikers. He struck nine fours and four sixes displaying tremendous power and inventiveness to completely overshadow Brendon McCullum in a 122-run stand that helped the Heat pull off a remarkable win. The tournament looms as a good opportunity to showcase his versatility.Sean Abbott celebrates a wicket•Getty Images

Ashton Turner (Western Australia)There were a lot of people wondering why he wasn’t part of Australia’s World Cup campaign following his heroics in Mohali earlier this year. What wasn’t widely known was the extent of his right shoulder problems. Turner took the brave decision to forego the Australia A white-ball tour of England, and a chance to get called into the World Cup squad as both Handscomb and Matthew Wade did after injuries to Shaun Marsh and Usman Khawaja, in order to have yet another shoulder operation. This time he had a Latarjet procedure, more common for Australia Rules footballers, which involves a bone graft to avoid ongoing dislocations and stabilise the shoulder better than other procedures he has had. He has recovered and is ready to play and has even begun bowling some offspin again in training. He won’t bowl in games yet, and he will field in the inner ring as his throwing and diving ability still needs to progress. But his freakish power-hitting and brilliant running between the wickets hasn’t diminished and he will be looking to stake a claim for a middle order slot in Australia’s white-ball teams with a good tournament.Sean Abbott (New South Wales)He last played for Australia in T20s and a lone ODI way back in 2014 but the need for specialist middle-over and death bowling in Australia’s short-form teams should open the door for a player with his skill set. He was NSW’s leading wicket-taker in last year’s JLT Cup which included two five-wicket hauls and was the second leading wicket-taker in the BBL. He had an excellent Shield season as well and got picked the Australia A tour of England where he took eight wickets in four one-day matches, including 4 for 52 against Gloucestershire, at an economy rate of 4.79. He is an excellent fielder and can provide handy late innings runs when required. He will certainly play in New South Wales’ early fixtures in the Marsh Cup and given the workload restrictions placed on the likes of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood ahead of Australia’s Test summer, he should get the chance to impress throughout the tournament.Jake Weatherald (South Australia)There was a lot of excitement around the left-hander last season following a prolific summer in all forms in 2017-18. He started last year’s JLT Cup with a bang making a superb unbeaten century against NSW. He made two more half-centuries in the remainder of the tournament but had a fairly inconsistent season thereafter with a couple of major peaks but quite a few troughs, as can often be the case for opening batsmen. His overall one-day record is outstanding: in 20 matches he averages 46.42 with a phenomenal strike-rate of 102.20 and four centuries. Just shy of his 25th birthday, he is closing in on the period where young batsmen often mature and develop some real consistency in their techniques and methods. South Australia will be hoping he takes that step this season.

Man City want to sign versatile £239k-p/w star who Erling Haaland loves

Manchester City are reportedly interested in signing a versatile world-renowned player who is admired by Erling Haaland, as they look to beat Real Madrid to his signature.

Man City transfer news

Pep Guardiola's side may be one of the strongest squads in Europe, if not the strongest, but it is always important to be planning new signings for the summer. A freshness could be needed at the Etihad, even if City once again win trophies this season, and a host of players have been linked with moves.

A primary transfer target could be West Ham and Brazil midfielder Lucas Paqueta, who was strongly backed to make the move to City last summer, only for the transfer to fall through after betting allegations emerged against him. It does look as though the Citizens are still interested in him, however, and he would surely jump at the opportunity to move to the reigning Premier League champions.

Lucas Paqueta for West Ham.

Troyes youngster Savio is set to join City in the summer, with the 19-year-old currently on loan at La Liga side Girona, scoring five goals and registering seven assists this season.

There are also important current players who need to be tied down to new deals, and a recent report has claimed that Ederson is someone they hope will sign an extension in the near future.

Man City want Achraf Hakimi

According to AS [via Sport Witness], Manchester City are lining up a move for Paris Saint-Germain right-back Achraf Hakimi, looking to beat Real Madrid to his services.

Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi.

Manchester City are described as an "interested party" in the report, with the £239,000-a-week star seen as a potential replacement for Kyle Walker last summer, prior to the Englishman staying put at the Etihad instead.

City are considered a "rival" to Madrid when it comes to the race to sign Hakimi in the summer transfer window, with a move away from PSG looking on the cards.

The 25-year-old could be a wonderful signing by Guardiola if he manages to entice him to the club, with the Moroccan a perfect long-term replacement for Walker, who is now 33 years of age.

He has 30 goal involvements (13 goals and 17 assists) in 105 appearances for PSG, highlighting the attacking quality he provides from right-back, and Kylian Mbappe has called him the best "in the world" in his position in the past. He can also play in midfield, with his versatility an added weapon in his armoury.

There are arguably very few negatives against City signing Hakimi, apart from the fact that he will likely cost a huge amount of money – Haaland has also spoken of his admiration for him – saying when asked who are the best players he's played with in 2022:

"I think the best is Achraf Hakimi and Riyad Mahrez. They were both high level."

ByHenry Jackson Feb 24, 2024

The lure of Madrid could be great for the Morocco international, considering Mbappe is seemingly going there and they are building a stunning team around the likes of Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Junior, but working with Guardiola will also hopefully be a massive draw for him.

Chelsea could supercharge Palmer with £103m goal-scoring "machine"

Despite some initial positivity stemming from an impressive pre-season campaign and the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino, Chelsea fans have had to endure another miserable season of false dawns and poor performances.

The Blues are on a three-game winning streak across all competitions but find themselves tenth in the Premier League and closer to the relegation zone than top spot.

One of the most significant problems at Stamford Bridge is the side's inability to finish chances, so fans should be excited about the latest player touted for a move to west London: Napoli's Victor Osimhen.

All confirmed Premier League done deals: January transfer window 2024

With the January transfer window coming towards its conclusion, FFC has all the info for tracking your club’s winter transfer activity.

ByLuke Randall Feb 1, 2024 Chelsea transfer news – Victor Osimhen

According to reports in Italy, via Football Transfers, Chelsea have made the Nigerian superstar their number-one transfer target for 2024, and they are entirely unfazed by the new contract he signed at the end of 2023.

In fact, the report has revealed that the Blues view the €120m (£103m) release clause in Osimhen's latest contract as an invitation from the Serie A champions to launch a bid with Todd Boehly and Co readying a 'big summer assault'.

While it would be another outlandishly expensive transfer for the west Londoners, it might just be worth it to sign a goal-scoring "machine" and "Naploli's heart and soul", as dubbed by journalist Mina Rzouki.

Additionally, the prospect of seeing Osimhen and Cole Palmer in the same team should be all the convincing that Chelsea needs to once again dip into their seemingly endless piles of cash.

How Victor Osimhen and Cole Palmer could play together

In a season that has been generally quite miserable for the Chelsea faithful, there has been at least one undeniably positive development: the signing of former Manchester City youngster Palmer.

The 21-year-old has already scored eight goals and provided four assists in 12 Premier League starts, and if his teammates were more clinical, he'd have a lot more of the latter by now.

The Blues' primary striker this season has been Nicolas Jackson, and while the Senegalese international has looked good at times, and has racked up seven league goals already, he would have scored many more if his finishing was up to par.

Victor Osimhen

The same problem exists with the Blues' backup striker, Armado Broja, as the Albanian has looked good at points, but hasn't delivered in front of goal, netting twice all term.

The poor finishing of the Chelsea pair is painfully apparent during games and even harder to ignore when comparing their underlying numbers to Osimhen's.

For example, Jackson generates a higher non-penalty expected goals figure than Osimhen – almost double, in fact – and yet when it comes to the number of non-penalty goals they score per 90, the 6 foot 1 Napoli star comes out ahead.

Now imagine it was the "natural talent" of Osimhen, as described by U23 scout Antonio Mango, getting on the end of Palmer's crosses, and not Jackson – the former City prospect could end the season with close to 20 assists.

Ultimately, it would be a massive investment from Chelsea to sign the Nigerian forward, but the partnership he could build with Palmer is surely reason enough for them to go for it.

  • Expected to announce Real Madrid move soon
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Frenchman finally closed the book on his time at PSG by winning the Coupe de France against Lyon. Mbappe was lifted into the air by his team-mates after the match and although he did not get on the scoresheet, he unsurprisingly made a significant impact for his boyhood club. After picking up his winners medal, the 25-year-old reflected on his time in Paris and refused to give too much away about his next move, but he did let slip that an announcement is coming soon.

  • WHAT MBAPPE SAID

He said: "Playing for PSG is unique, it’s something strong that I recommend to all those who want to experience greatness in their country by being French. Everything I had here, I'm not going to relive it anywhere else but hey, I'm going to experience something else and I'm sure it will be magical.

"The best thing to do is to finish saying goodbye. All I wanted was to finish well with my club. There is a trophy. There is a time for everything. I will announce my new club in due time. It’s only a few days left so there’s no problem."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

No true PSG fan will want Mbappe to leave and they may even feel annoyed that he is joining and strengthening one of their European rivals. But the World Cup winner has been a brilliant servant to his hometown club and has given them six years of his career. His and PSG's failure to win the Champions League will perhaps leave a sour taste but Mbappe has achieved enough in France to be considered a club legend.

Jake Lehmann holds off Queensland victory charge

After 37 wickets in two days, South Australia are 81 runs behind with three second-innings wickets in hand

The Report by Daniel Brettig12-Mar-2019

South Australia middle-order batsman Jake Lehmann stood between Queensland and outright victory after another frenetic day of wickets against the moving, bouncing Dukes ball in a Sheffield Shield match at the Gabba in Brisbane. As though not content with the 17 wickets that fell on day one, the two sides gave up 20 on day two, 10 for each side, as the quick end of the Redbacks’ first innings and the rapid decline of the Bulls’ second left SA with a victory target of 175.Bowlers on both sides enjoyed themselves, but none more so than SA left-arm spinner Tom Andrews, who finished the match with 9 for 82 after picking up three second innings victims the day after he had opened up the match with a haul of 6 for 40.In stark contrast, Bulls’ wrist spinner Mitch Swepson is yet to bowl a single ball in the match, as their captain Jimmy Peirson stuck with the all-pace attack of Michael Neser, Luke Feldman, Cameron Gannon and Mark Steketee. At 7 for 82 in SA’s chase, it appeared that the Bulls were headed for full points inside two days, but Lehmann found an ally in Nick Winter, as the pair crept to the close to keep the Redbacks in with some chance of a win. Lehmann’s 41 not out is already the highest individual score of the match.
