10 Luis Diaz (Liverpool) Midfielder, 27.5% selected

Just over a quarter of all FPL players have Liverpool’s Luis Diaz in their team, and it’s easy to see why.

This season, the Colombian has scored five goals and registered two assists in nine Premier League games for Arne Slot’s side – form that has seen him earn a total of 60 FPL points so far. Only five players have earned more.

However, his effectiveness has wavered in recent weeks. He’s picked up just nine points across Liverpool’s last four games, compared to 48 in the four games before that.

9 Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa) Forward, 28.4% selected

Ollie Watkins is one of the most expensive strikers FPL players can buy for their team, currently coming in at a cost of £9.1 million.

So far this season, the Aston Villa hitman has justified his hefty price tag, scoring five goals and registering two assists in nine Premier League games for Unai Emery’s side.

His current total of 51 FPL points is bettered by only four forwards in the top flight.

Pedro Porro has been a steady fixture in Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur side this season, starting all nine of their top-flight matches so far. The defender also scored a goal on the opening day against Leicester City and has kept two clean sheets, earning him a respectable total of 30 FPL points.

Those who have the Spaniard picked will be hoping he can soon start registering some assists like the seven he managed last term.

7 Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool) Defender, 29.8% selected

Trent Alexander-Arnold for Liverpool

For a long time now, Trent Alexander-Arnold has been one of the highest-scoring defenders in FPL. In the 2019/20 and 2021/22 seasons, the Liverpool star earned more points than any other defender in the Premier League with respective totals of 210 and 208.

This season, he already looks on course to reach those heights. Nine gameweeks in, the Englishman has 44 points to his name, making him the division’s second-highest-scoring defender behind only teammate Virgil van Dijk, who has 45.

With 42 FPL points to his name this season, Manchester City’s Josko Gvardiol is currently the Premier League’s third-highest-scoring defender.

Pep Guardiola’s side are yet to taste defeat in nine top flight games this term, and Gvardiol has started in all but one of those fixtures, keeping two clean sheets and scoring two goals in the process.

Players with the Croat in their team will be hoping he doesn’t pick up another injury like he did last year – a knock has him down as a slight doubt for GW10.

5 David Raya (Arsenal) Goalkeeper, 30.3% selected

Last season, Arsenal shot-stopper David Raya scored the second-most points of any goalkeeper in FPL with 135, which was 18 fewer than Everton’s Jordan Pickford.

This term, he’s scored 37 points so far, which is four more than Pickford, but fewer than three other top-flight goalkeepers, those being Chelsea’s Robert Sanchez, Nottingham Forest’s Matz Sels and Manchester United’s Andre Onana.

10 of Raya’s points came in the Gunners’ 2-0 win over Aston Villa back in August, where he kept a clean sheet, made three saves, and scored three bonus points.

Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo has been the surprise of the season in the Premier League. The Cameroon international has eight goals in nine games, making him the league’s second-highest scorer behind Manchester City striker Erling Haaland.

His good form means he’s already registered 68 FPL points, which is the fourth-most of any player this term.

Brentford’s recent 4-3 win over Ipswich Town proved to be Mbeumo’s most lucrative FPL gameweek, with the striker scoring twice and collecting 15 points.

Mohamed Salah scores for Liverpool

At the rate he’s going, it’s a wonder why every single FPL player doesn’t currently have Mohamed Salah in their team.

With six goals, five assists and five clean sheets, the Liverpool superstar is the FPL’s highest-scoring player so far this season, with a whopping points total of 84.

Players will be smart to keep him in for the coming weeks, too. Up next for Arne Slot’s Liverpool is Aston Villa, against whom Salah has scored seven times in 11 games. Then the Reds face Southampton, with Salah boasting the exact same record against the Saints.

Cole Palmer’s impressive 79 points total in the FPL this season has come mostly courtesy of two quite astonishing gameweeks.

Against Wolverhampton Wanderers on GW2, the Chelsea midfielder got three assists and a goal in a 6-2 win to pick up an impressive 17 points. Four weeks later against Brighton, he scored all four of Chelsea’s goals in a 4-2 victory, earning himself 25 points.

No player scored more FPL points than Palmer last season with 244. If he keeps scoring points the way he is now, don’t be surprised if he comes out on top again this year.

As it happened – England vs India, 2nd Test, Lord's, 3rd day

Varun Shetty14-Aug-2021.Stumps6.32pmJoe Root made his fourth century at Lord’s, and stretched it past 150 like he had the first three times, as a near-perfect display on Day 3 helped England take a slender lead against India. He was left stranded on 180 with England being bowled out off the last ball of the day. The 27-run lead capped off a gradual comeback from England in the match, which had begun by first bowling India out early on Day 2 and then battling through to stumps on a difficult evening. Exactly two days and two innings now remain for the teams to force a result.Almost as if it were a reward for their work on Friday evening, England came out to the best batting conditions of the match so far on Saturday – bright sunshine and a flat pitch that they put to good use, starting with overnight batters Root and Jonny Bairstow.Always a matter of two wickets5.15pmIshant Sharma struck twice in two balls late on day three•Getty ImagesAt every point in this Test match, the tempo has changed entirely with two quick wickets. Rahul and Rahane yesterday, then Sibley and Hameed. And it’s Ishant Sharma today, picked ahead of Ashwin, who gets the two left-handers in two balls. Root’s now faced a hat-trick ball twice in this innings.India have dragged it close to parity with those wickets. A big lead now will need a significant effort from England’s tail. Mark Wood likes to throw the bat around and Anderson can stick around. They scrapped and marginally pushed ahead of India through yesterday’s sessions. Today, it’s been complete dominance. Another session scoring at nearly 3.5 an over. They’ve added 98 in this one and lost two wickets and suddenly this game is moving as quickly as it had on the first day. The pitch certainly looks just as good as it had on that day, flat and friendly when movement in the air isn’t a factor. For India, the second new ball hasn’t proved to be a game-changer. And now they have begun leaking boundaries. Shami is going at over four an over and there is little in terms of clear-cut chances being created by their line-up. England have cashed in big time to seize the advantage – in all but runs – in this Test.300 in sight3.25pmJoe Root is all smiles after getting to a century•PA Photos/Getty ImagesIndia had to manufacture the Jonny Bairstow wicket and the Jos Buttler wicket was a rare case of them significantly beating an England batter today. It has been cruise control for the most part though as the sun has continued to beat down through the day. The ball isn’t doing a whole lot and they’re having to rely on toil and discipline at the moment. Flambouyant set-ups aren’t on the menu today as England come close to 300 – something both myself and Debayan Sen had said wasn’t likely on the podcast last evening – and even closer to taking a lead well before stumps if things continue to go this way. Analysing India’s morning1.25pmJasprit Bumrah leaps before delivery•Getty ImagesVarun Shetty: What have you made of England’s progress this morning?Nagraj Gollapudi: 97 runs in 28 overs – sums it up, no? Mind you, first time so far this series, England have batted out a session without losing a wicket. It is a statement to India: beware!Varun Shetty: And it’s looked like it! I thought they were conservative right from the start today – do you agree?Nagraj Gollapudi: Possibly. But then it has been such lovely, batting conditions this morning. The ball was nearly 50 overs old when play began today on a sunniest batting conditions not just this Test but the series so far. The only bowler who stood out was once again Jasprit Bumrah. Do you agree?Varun Shetty: Yup. I think this session could have been a lot worse for India, because Bairstow was looking in full control. And we know when he’s in full control, he can score really quickly. Bumrah had him second-guessing a lot, though, and you could see he was making him shuffle a long way across. Should India be slightly disappointed by this after picking their top four pacers?Nagraj Gollapudi: It is not yet a concern, but the bowling group except for Bumrah, \will be disappointed slightly.  I mean the pitch is slow, there is no moisture on the pitch and no reverse swing yet so the only thing you can do to create pressure is stay disciplined. That is exactly what Bumrah did: he posed questions by pitching consistently on length and cutting the ball away. He  lured Bairstow more than once into playing the shot and beat the outside edge. But the pressure has not been created from both ends. Jadeja has bowled T20 lines and is playing the holding role than the senior spinner. No surprises there. But Ishant and Shami have not bowled to the fields and bowled too straight. But am sure India are looking for the new ball now – what seven more overs?Varun Shetty: Yes, it does seem like a countdown to the new ball right now. How are the overhead conditions at the moment?Nagraj Gollapudi: It is warm outside. I was sitting atop the newly launched Edrich stand, which is your long-off if you are batting from the Pavilion End. Right now it is a bit greyish, but dry and expect that to stay like that. The biggest issue for India is Root and Bairstow are fast chipping away at the lead which is now under 150. Would you back England to actually take the lead by eod?Varun Shetty: I’m skeptical only because the second new ball completely derailed India’s innings as well, but they do look good for the lead if these two bat another hour. Let’s see how it goes, catch you later.Third hundred stand this year between Root and Bairstow1.03pmAnd yet, only Jonny Bairstow’s first fifty for England since 2019. Mind-boggling, isn’t it, for someone as gifted? It’s the support root needed and on this instance, the partnership has been an even distribution. For context, take a look at this list of England’s top partnerships this year – Root is involved in the top 13 of them. The English captain will be pleased at the progress this morning. India have been forced to be conservative already and their bowling now seems like a countdown to the second new ball. Bumrah has been quietly chipping away and the only bowler who has consistently troubled England. Otherwise, this has been England’s best session of the match. The lead is under 150 now. They’ve added 97 to their overnight score without losing a wicket.England’s top partnerships this year•ESPNcricinfo LtdOpening hour12pmJonny Bairstow flicks•PA Photos/Getty ImagesThis has been steady going for England, and a particularly impressive innings from Bairstow so far. It’s been no secret that teams have tried to hit his middle stump, and he’s had to work on his game in the V as a result. Importantly, that doesn’t seem to have affected his judgement outside off stump. You see Pujara lately and you get a contrast – he’s become uncertain on both the outside as well as inside edge, because of the work he had to against the incoming ball. So far, Bairstow looks very organised. The work he’s done hasn’t affected his ability to score quickly either. First hour to England.

Sunny day10.32amJoe Root taps one on the off side•PA Photos/Getty ImagesHello, welcome back. For the first time in this Test, we’re going to begin the day in glorious sunshine. Perhaps Joe Root’s decision to bowl isn’t looking so bad in retrospect, at least given that so far they haven’t had to deal with overpowered bowling conditions. They have had to deal with a pretty powerful bowling line-up though, and they’ve done it alright so far. A lot of it, once again, has revolved around Root, but Burns played a strong hand last evening to make sure there wasn’t a collapse as Siraj powered through his spell after tea. They’re 245 behind and the equation is pretty simple – they’ll have to bat all day to be in a position to control this Test.

Ten Hag must drop Rashford to unleash Man Utd star who’s "like Ryan Giggs"

After putting faith in Erik ten Hag following Manchester United’s FA Cup success at the back end of last season, this was not the start that the new INEOS ownership group were hoping for.

United have three points from their opening two games of the campaign, tasting defeat to Brighton in last-gasp fashion and leaving it late themselves to beat Fulham. They do have a new hero though in Dutchman Joshua Zirkzee.

Manchester United's Joshua Zirkzee scores vs Fulham

Whether he starts against Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon remains to be seen but there should be some changes to the starting XI if they are to have any chance of defeating Arne Slot’s men.

Mason Mount has been ruled out through injury but even without his blow, a change in system was surely required. To put it politely, Bruno Fernandes playing as a false 9 has not worked.

Fernandes will likely move back into a deeper role today where Mount was playing. That would then potentially mean a first start for the aforementioned Zirkzee.

Ten Hag can ease Mount blow by unleashing Man Utd star in new role

It may not be Joshua Zirkzee who fills the void of the Englishman…

ByRobbie Walls Sep 1, 2024

That may not be the only change with Marcus Rashford surely fighting for his place in the side.

Rashford's season so far

The last year has been a tough one for the poster boy of this great football club. Throughout the 2022/23 campaign, the forward was simply electric as he helped himself to 30 goals and ten assists in all competitions.

The regression we saw last season was quite something then, as Rashford found the net just eight times in 43 outings. Left out of the England squad for Euro 2024, it was deserved for a torrid season in front of goal.

Sadly, his form hasn’t improved much during the new campaign. Excluded from Lee Carsley’s first Three Lions squad, the 26-year-old is yet to find himself on the scoresheet after a rough couple of games.

Against Fulham on the Premier League’s opening night, he failed with all five dribble attempts and won just two of his eight duels. Things didn’t get a whole lot better in the loss against Brighton either

He was handed a dismal 4/10 match rating by MEN’s Samuel Luckhurst at full-time, with the reporting slating the Englishman as ‘United’s weakest player’.

The best replacement for Rashford

With Amad scoring against Brighton last weekend it is unlikely that Ten Hag withdraws the Ivorian from his starting XI. As a result, it’s Rashford who must be replaced when they face their most daunting task of the season to date, Liverpool.

Alejandro Garnacho is yet to start in the league this term but deserves to at Old Trafford on Sunday. The scorer of that goal against Everton last season, he was one of United’s standout players, bagging ten times in all competitions. It’s certainly an impressive tally for someone who was still only 19 at the time.

Now 20, Garnacho is of course wiser and is ready to take the league by storm again. That must start against Liverpool this weekend.

Why? Well, with an out-of-form Rashford, Ten Hag must be wise to any weakness he can find in this Liverpool team. Trent Alexander-Arnold will no doubt gallivant forward and we know he’s susceptible defensively, so Garnacho should be the man to expose him.

Ranking in the top 5% of positionally similar players in Europe’s big leagues for progressive carries per 90, there aren’t many more dribblers on the continent as relentless as the Argentine youngster. That statistic perfectly backs up praise from Paul Ince, who once said of the young wide player: “He’s always trying to get past people, which is a great asset to have. He’s like Ryan Giggs.”

Alejandro Garnacho

Couple that with Alexander-Arnold’s culpability in one-on-one situations, ranking in the very bottom 1% for percentage of dribblers tackled among full-backs in Europe, and this seems like a recipe for success for United.

Leeds could land dream signing for Ampadu in swoop for "magical" star

Leeds United still have around a month left to go in the summer transfer window to make further additions to their first-team options across the park.

Daniel Farke has already added three new signings to the group, with Joe Rodon, Alex Cairns, Jayden Bogle, and Joe Rothwell coming through the door.

The Whites failed to secure promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking, and are now set to embark on another attempt to fight their way out of the Championship.

They could improve their chances of finishing in the top two by signing a player who has already proven himself to be a fantastic player at that level.

Leeds interest in Championship star

According to HITC, Leeds would love to sign Norwich City attacking midfielder Gabriel Sara to bolster Farke's options in the middle of the park.

The report claims that the Whites are big fans of the former Sao Paulo ace, whose left foot was dubbed "magical" by analyst Ben Mattinson, and would be interested in bringing him to Elland Road this summer.

It adds, however, that their Championship rivals are set to demand a fee of at least £20m for their £19k-per-week star, who they bought for £6m in the summer of 2022.

HITC claims that the West Yorkshire side may not have the funds available to sanction a deal for the Brazilian unless they cash in on one or two of their own stars, namely Crysencio Summerville and Wilfried Gnonto.

Gabriel Sara would be a dream for Ethan Ampadu

Farke could land a dream signing for Ethan Ampadu by landing Sara this summer, as the Norwich whiz could brilliantly complement him in midfield.

Whilst the Wales international is a defensive enforcer who does not provide much in the way of quality at the top end of the pitch, the left-footed sensation has the ability to make a consistent impact in the final third.

In the 2023/24 Championship campaign, no central midfielder for Leeds managed more than one goal or more than three assists, which suggests that the team lacked a goal threat from that position.

As you can see in the table above, Sara racked up a staggering 25 direct goal contributions in 46 matches from a central midfield role for Norwich.

Meanwhile, Ampadu is a dominant defensive presence at the base of the midfield, whilst also being able to operate at centre-back, who who can win the majority of his physical duels and win possession back through tackles, interceptions, and recoveries.

Sara could, therefore, be a dream signing for the Welsh brute as he has the attacking quality to burst forward from midfield to make things happen in attack, whilst the ex-Chelsea man can sit back and sweep up out of possession.

Sky Sports: Ipswich Town now also make £15m bid to sign "unplayable" star

Ipswich Town are continuing to ramp up their transfer business in the final weeks of the transfer window as they look to build a squad capable of Premier League survival this season.

Ipswich Town's transfer spree continues

Having managed to secure back-to-back promotions, spending was always likely this summer as Kieran McKenna's side looked to overhaul a squad built largely of League One players.

But the scale of business has been impressive from the East Anglian side. Headed by the arrival of Omari Hutchinson on a club-record deal, nine new faces have arrived at Portman Road, including former England Player of the Year Kalvin Phillips and last season's Championship top scorer Sammie Szmodics.

They are not done yet either, with McKenna's side on the verge of completing a loan move to sign Chelsea forward Armando Broja, a deal which will contain an obligation to buy the Albanian for £30m should they avoid relegation this season.

On the pitch, they face a baptism of fire. The Tractor Boys fell to a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool in their opening game of the season, and face a trip to reigning champions Manchester City in their second. But off the pitch, there is set to be more business even beyond Broja.

Ipswich Town make £15m bid to sign "unplayable" ace

That comes as Sky Sports have revealed that the East Anglian outfit have made a bid to sign Sunderland star Jack Clarke. McKenna's side have tabled an offer consisting of £15m up front plus further add-ons to sign the winger, who is being chased by a whole host of clubs this summer.

Down to the final two years of his £17,000-a-week deal at the Stadium of Light, the Black Cats may be forced to cash in this summer should they wish to extract the best value for the former Tottenham man.

Ipswich could land a bigger talent than Phillips in "incredible" gem

Ipswich Town are looking to the future with this potential swoop.

Last season, he caught the eye of several clubs, finishing the Championship campaign with an impressive 15 goals and four assists in 40 outings, and earned high praise from weekly watchers of the EFL including Adrian Clarke.

"Jack Clarke is unplayable," Clarke told the What the EFL?! Podcast.

"When he’s in this form, he looks like a Premier League star. It’s someone who is playing in the wrong division. He had 14 dribbles in this game, six shots, I love the run and pass for the Dan Neil goal, scored himself of course."

Now, he could be set to become a Premier League player after all, with Ipswich offering him a route back into top-flight football. It is added that Ipswich are currently "pushing hardest" for his signature, having already seen a bid knocked back this summer.

Leicester City join race for "high quality" £25m+ Iheanacho replacement

With numerous senior attacking players leaving Leicester City this summer, the Foxes are now on the lookout for new talents to help bolster Steve Cooper's side.

The Foxes are on the hunt for forward players

Whilst last season saw Leicester restore their Premier League status at the first time of asking, the Foxes will return to the top flight without some of the players who got them there.

The main man Leicester will be without is Kelechi Iheanacho, who chose to call time on his spell at the King Power when his contract expired at the end of last month. Currently a free agent, it looks like the Nigerian striker will be playing his football for Sevilla next season.

Another likely exit from Leicester is fellow striker Tom Cannon, who is linked with a loan move back to the second tier. The current rumours suggest that West Bromwich Albion is a likely destination for the Irishman with the Baggies looking to replace the departing Brandon-Thomas Asante.

With attacking talents high on the Foxes' list of priorities, the club have recently been linked with a move for out of favour Arsenal ace Reiss Nelson. A report by Fabrizio Romano last week suggested that Cooper's side had opened talks over an initial loan deal for the winger with an option to buy further down the line.

Whilst a deal for Nelson would go some way towards bolstering the Foxes' attack, it appears that the club are also in the race to bring a new centre forward to the King Power this summer.

Leicester set to battle for French forward

As first reported in the French press and later relayed by the Leicester Mercury, the Foxes have reportedly started the process to sign Lens striker Elye Wahi. The outlet claims that Leicester are set to join fellow Premier League outfits West Ham and Chelsea in the race to secure the services of the 21-year-old striker.

The report states that Lens are willing to sell Wahi this summer despite only signing him less than twelve months ago. With the Ligue 1 side spending £25 million to acquire the Frenchman from Montpellier, it is expected that Wahi will fetch a greater fee than this initial sum if he is to depart during the transfer window.

Over the course of the previous season, the 21-year-old found the back of the net on twelve occassions including two goals in Lens' Champions League campaign. Speaking on Wahi's performances, Lens coach Franck Haise was quick to sing the striker's praises.

With a number of Leicester's attacking options set to leave the club this summer, the Foxes could make a statement by beating their Premier League rivals to sign Wahi this summer.
