Liverpool have made U-turn over "exceptional" £50,000-a-week ace’s future

Liverpool are believed to have made a U-turn regarding the future of an "exceptional" player, according to an intriguing transfer update.

Liverpool transfer news

The Merseysiders continue to be linked with moves for various players in the current transfer window, with Hoffenheim and Germany forward Max Beier emerging as one option. The 21-year-old is a highly-rated attacking talent with great pace, and could feel that this summer is the right time to enjoy a new challenge.

Bringing in a new centre-back has to be seen as a primary piece of business for Liverpool before the new Premier League season gets underway, and Juventus ace Gleison Bremer is someone who Arne Slot personally wants to bring to Anfield in the coming weeks.

Juventus defender Gleison Bremer

Further up the pitch, the Reds are said to have made an approach for Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres, who is coming off the back of a magnificent season with the Portuguese giants. The Swede scored 29 goals in 32 starts in the Primeira Liga, but looks to be heading towards Arsenal.

This summer has also seen Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon linked with Liverpool many times, having grown up a boyhood Reds supporter. The Magpies are insistent that the England international is going nowhere, but if he makes it clear that he wants to move to Anfield, they could find it hard to keep hold of him.

Now, a significant update has emerged regarding a current Liverpool player, with a big U-turn happening.

"Exceptional" Liverpool ace could now stay

According to Football Insider, Liverpool are now "very unlikely" to let Wataru Endo leave the club this summer, despite reports suggesting otherwise. Recent reports have suggested that he would be allowed to move on, not suiting Slot's style of play, but the new Reds manager is "unwilling" to weaken his midfield, instead preferring the Japanese to stay put and bolster his options.

Keeping hold of Endo certainly wouldn't be a bad thing, even though he arguably feels limited in a technical sense, compared to elite-level defensive midfielders in the modern game. That being said, Jurgen Klopp was a big admirer during their one year together at Liverpool.

"He’s a machine. He is footballing-wise exceptional. His defensive brain is outstanding. He gives us a lot of freedom for a lot of things. Yeah, top development. Very helpful, very helpful."

At 31, Endo needs to be considered nothing more than a squad player if he does stay put, but with injuries so often hurting the Reds in recent years, so retaining his services would aid the depth at Slot's disposal.

That being said, if the Dutchman decides that he doesn't need the £50,000-a-week Japan international, supporters will likely see sense in the decision, given his age and the fact that another midfielder could still come in.

Ultimately, it feels like a win-win situation for Liverpool, with Endo producing some excellent performances in a Reds shirt, making 29 league appearances last term, but also not representing the future.

West Ham ready to move for £25m midfielder after wrapping up Rodriguez deal

West Ham United are ready to make an offer for yet another player this summer as they look to continue their transfer blitz ahead of the upcoming Premier League season.

West Ham busy in transfer market

Julen Lopetegui's side for the first game of the new season is set to look very different to that which David Moyes oversaw in 2023-24, with West Ham having agreed a whole host of new signings this summer.

The east Londoners had already confirmed the arrivals of Wolves captain Max Kilman and Brazilian teenage talent Luis Guilherme in deals worth close to £70m this summer, as well as the signing of Wes Foderingham from relegated Sheffield United on a free transfer.

But they have gone into overdrive in recent days; Crysencio Summerville has arrived from Leeds United in a deal believed to be worth in excess of £25m, with the Championship player of the year penning a five year deal at the London Stadium.

Meanwhile, two more new faces are expected to be confirmed on Monday. The first of those is Borussia Dortmund striker Niclas Fullkrug, who has already completed his medical ahead of a switch to east London in a move that is expected to set the Hammers back a fee of 32m euros (£27m).

The second of those is free agent Guido Rodriguez, who saw his time with Real Betis come to a close this summer and is now set to pen a two year deal at the London Stadium to bolster their midfield ranks. Now, they have been linked with a move for another midfielder.

West Ham chase goalscoring midfielder

That comes as Caught Offside reveal that the Hammers have joined the race for in-demand midfielder Matt O'Riley. The Celtic man enjoyed an excellent 2023-24 campaign, grabbing 19 goals and 18 assists in all competitions as he helped fire Celtic to a domestic double.

He continued that form in the Scottish Premiership opener, grabbing an assist as his side thrashed Kilmarnock 4-0. And his form was hailed by Brendan Rodgers at the end of the 2023-24 season, with the ex-Liverpool boss dubbing him "phenomenal".

“He has been absolutely phenomenal really in his consistency. I think if we lacked anything as a team, it was probably that," Rodgers explained. "It’s huge testament to himself because the work he puts in, the focus he puts in every single day at training to improve and be better, that’s clearly been rewarded by his team-mates and everyone else. It’s very well deserved."

So far, Atalanta have seen three bids for the 23-year-old turned down, while Chelsea and Southampton are also thought to be monitoring the situation.

Celtic'sMattO'Riley

So too are West Ham, with the report claiming that Lopetegui's side "have shown strong interest" and "are prepared to make a move" for O'Riley, with the Hammers "ready to enter negotiations" over signing the Danish international.

However, they are "hesitant" to pay the £25m asking price for O'Riley, the report continues, which could leave the door open for another club to sneak in and snatch their target if they are not careful.

Tottenham accept bid to sell "excellent" £12m ace who didn’t want new deal

Tottenham Hotspur have now reportedly accepted an offer to sell an experienced player who didn't want to put pen to paper on a new contract in North London this summer.

Tottenham transfer news

The Lilywhites have under a month until the Premier League campaign gets underway and they've arguably still got plenty of work to do. After failing to qualify for the Champions League last season, those in North London could certainly do with further additions on top of the young Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall. And rumours certainly suggest that they're well aware of that.

Recent reports have linked Spurs to the likes of Jacob Ramsey and Federico Chiesa in the last week in two deals that would undoubtedly hand Ange Postecoglou's side a major boost. A potential deal to sign Ramsey is particularly heating up, with rumours that Spurs are set to submit a bid worth £19m in an attempt to secure the Aston Villa midfielder's signature.

As the Lilywhites weigh up moves for reinforcements, however, negotiations to free up some room on their wage bill are reportedly already well underway. According to Fabrizio Romano, Spurs have accepted Marseille's €13.5/14m (£11/12m) offer to sign Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg this summer after the Dane decided that he did not want to extend his current contract in North London.

The midfielder struggled for starts in Ange Postecoglou's debut campaign and the emergence of Gray and reported interest in Ramsey may of increased his game time problem, making this summer an ideal time to move on.

"Excellent" Hojbjerg needs Tottenham exit

After making just eight Premier League starts last season, there are not many in the current Spurs squad who need a move away more than Hojbjerg. At 28 years old too, now is a better chance than ever to seal another big move in the form of Marseille. It's in Ligue 1 that the Dane can consistently show the form that earned him the praise of Postecoglou when he was on punditry duty for ITV at Euro 2024.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

The Spurs boss praised his midfielder following Denmark's closely-fought 2-0 defeat against Germany at the last 16 stage, saying via HITC: “Denmark definitely would have got encouragement as much as what they did when they had the ball.

“They were always going to have to defend in periods. At the start, they were finding it really difficult to get out their half. Then they were making a lot more progress in the front third. Pierre Hojbjerg has been excellent in breaking up play and initiating it. “

That praise seemingly wasn't enough to keep hold of Hojbjerg, however, who looks destined to complete a move to Marseille before the summer transfer window slams shut at the end of next month.

India await Mohammed Shami's scan results after painful blow to right forearm

Shami was forced to retire hurt and went for scans after the game

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Dec-2020India are awaiting Mohammed Shami’s scan results and news on his further participation in the series, after the bowler retired hurt during their second innings. At the post-match presentation, captain Virat Kohli said that Shami had been in pain and could “hardly lift” his bowling arm after being struck by a Pat Cummins bouncer. Shami has gone for scans and his status will be known after the results.Shami came in at No. 11 and retired hurt during India’s dramatic first-session collapse, after he tried to evade a short ball, backing away to the leg side. The ball followed him down leg side and he was caught in a tangle and struck on his right forearm. He was visibly uncomfortable and the team doctor was out immediately to tend to the blow. After a dose of pain-relief spray and a massage, Shami’s forearm was strapped up by the doctor and he looked set to resume batting. But after taking his mark at the crease, Shami once again took a short walk towards the leg side before calling the doctor back on to the field. After a long chat, he went off the field to end the India innings.”He is going for a scan. He was in a lot of pain, could hardly lift his arm,” Kohli said. “Probably in the evening we’ll know exactly what is happening.”The next Test is a week away but an injury to Shami would severely dent India, who were reduced to their lowest-ever Test total in Adelaide, and will be without Kohli for the rest of the series. With Rohit Sharma also not available till the third Test – he is in quarantine after landing in Australia – and Ishant Sharma already missing the tour, Shami’s absence would leave India without four senior players as they look to bounce back in the series.Shami is India’s premiere fast bowler alongside Jasprit Bumrah and had been rested through half of India’s limited-overs series at the start of the tour, in order to be ready for the four Tests. The two fast bowlers in India’s squad who can replace him are Navdeep Saini and Mohammed Siraj, who are both uncapped in Tests.

Tim Southee, Neil Wagner and Colin de Grandhomme on New Zealand injury list

Tim Southee, Neil Wagner and Colin de Grandhomme are part of a growing injury list for New Zealand, but coach Gary Stead is hopeful that most of the problems are not long-term concerns ahead of the start of the international summer against West Indies. However, left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel has suffered a setback in his recovery from the calf strain that has delayed the start of his season.Southee (back), Wagner (hip/groin) and de Grandhomme (right foot) have been ruled out of Northern Districts’ next Plunket Shield match, although it is hoped that Southee will be able to return in round four which starts on November 14.Henry Nicholls, who has yet to play this season, is on course to return from a calf injury in round four as well for Canterbury.Matt Henry has previously been ruled out for up to six weeks after breaking his thumb.”Injuries are always a concern and we’re certainly monitoring each case closely with our medical staff,” Stead said. “Tim Southee and Henry Nicholls are both expected to be fit for round four of the Plunket Shield.”Neil Wagner and Colin de Grandhomme both have niggles and we are awaiting scan results on their respective injuries to ascertain the next steps.”Likewise, Ajaz Patel had a scan on his left calf after suffering a setback in his return to play rehabilitation. An update on Neil, Ajaz and Colin will be provided once their scan results have been received and assessed.”Of the injured players, Southee and de Grandhomme are likely to feature in New Zealand’s T20I squad to face West Indies from the end of November, whereas Wagner and Nicholls are key parts of the Test side. The first Test against West Indies starts on December 3 in Hamilton.

IPL 2020 SOPs: Rigorous testing, restricted movement, one team per hotel

IPL has permitted families to travel and stay inside the bio-secure bubble, but franchises to take final decision

The IPL has laid out a rigorous testing process for players and support staff who will need to clear at least four tests along with a week-long quarantine before they can start training in the UAE. Details of the testing process and frequency feature among the draft document of standard operating procedures (SOPs), which the IPL shared with franchises on Monday. The SOPs include details on dos and don’ts during travel, lodging and training during the 53-day tournament, which is scheduled to be played at three venues in the UAE – Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah – between September 19 and November 10. The BCCI is yet to announce the tournament schedule as it awaits a formal nod from the Indian government.ESPNcricinfo understands that teams have been asked to travel with “minimum” contingents and not before August 20. Among the SOPs, the IPL has permitted families of squad members to travel to the UAE and stay inside the bio-secure bubble, but the final decision on that front will remain with each franchise. However, the IPL has made it mandatory that each team will need to have a medical doctor on board to help the franchise mitigate risks as well educate the squad during the Covid-19 pandemic.Testing protocolsAs per the draft SOPs, IPL has recommended to franchises that all members carry out two tests before their squads depart for the UAE. Those two tests will need to be done at 24-hour intervals as per the World Health Organisation norms. They will also need to be done before the player or coaching/support staff member assembles in the city where they will board the flight for the UAE. The validity of the second test result will need to last for at least four days (96 hours) including the date of landing in the UAE.The player or staff in question can only fly out if both those tests come out negative. Anyone infected will need to undergo the mandatory two-week quarantine period as per the guidelines of the Indian government. After that, the person will need to undergo a fresh set of two tests and clear them before joining the squad in the UAE.Once the squad lands in the UAE, all members are to undergo another test at the airport before heading to the team hotel. From this point, the IPL testing protocol will kick in.As per the protocol, every squad will undergo a mandatory seven-day quarantine in the team hotel. During this week every squad member will be tested thrice – on days 1, 3 and 6. Once all those results come back negative, the squad can start training. After that, all squad members will be tested on the fifth day of every week throughout the tournament. As far as the non-Indian players and staff are concerned, they will need to carry the negative result of the test carried out in the last 96 hours before arriving in the UAE.As per the local rules, during the tournament squads travelling to Abu Dhabi will need to carry negative test results carried out in the previous 48 hours. As per the IPL guidelines, if the weekly test result has expired during the course of travel to Abu Dhabi, squads will need to undergo a fresh test again.Testing positive during the tournamentIn such a scenario, it is understood that the person in question would need to isolate but outside the bubble, considering that aerosols – respiratory droplets – can easily be transmitted. That infected person would be put in a sanitised room within the same hotel. One of the guidelines recommends having a few rooms where the squad is staying to isolate any infected person(s).No stepping out of the bubbleIt is understood the IPL has made it clear no person can go in and out of the bio-secure bubble during the course of the tournament. Strict social distancing norms have been recommended, including squad members discouraged from having any close contact even within the bubble which includes moving between hotel rooms. Squad members have also been asked to wear masks outside their rooms at hotels and avoid any unnecessary movement. There will be exceptions. If an injured player needs to visit a hospital for X-rays or scans, then the guidelines suggest the movement be restricted to the clinic with minimal interaction with outsiders. One team per hotelAs per the guidelines all eight teams will stay in separate hotels. The franchises have been asked to book a hotel or resort exclusively for the squads with no outsiders allowed. If that is not possible, then IPL has recommended they stay somewhere with a separate wing, entrance and exit.

Everton gem is fast becoming Dyche’s best player after Sheff Utd display

Everton made it five Premier League games unbeaten yesterday when they beat Chris Wilder's Sheffield United side 1-0 at Goodison Park.

Sean Dyche's side secured all three points after Abdoulaye Doucoure's first goal in 2024 was enough to edge past the already relegated side, with the Toffees able to claim a fourth win in their last five matches.

The win sees the club occupy 15th place in the Premier League, 14 points clear of Luton Town despite suffering an eight-point deduction for multiple PSR breaches this campaign.

Everton's home stadium, Goodison Park.

Had the club not received any sanctions during the current season, the Toffees would sit in 12th place, level on points with Brighton and Hove Albion, who sit within the top half of the division.

Despite already securing survival, Dyche's side produced an excellent display, with one player in particular showcasing his rapid development under the boss at Goodison.

Jarrad Branthwaite's stats against Sheff Utd

In what has been his breakthrough campaign at the club, centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite has impressed for the Toffees, starting all but three of the club's Premier League matches.

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite

The youngster featured for the entirety of the outing, starring alongside fellow defender James Tarkowski as he has done on each occasion he's started in the Premier League during 2023/24.

During the victory, Branthwaite won 100% of the aerial duels he contested, whilst also completing 46 passes at a competition rate of 87%.

He also managed to complete two long passes, managing to find a teammate on every occasion, with the 21-year-old demonstrating his ability to play out from the back.

However, Branthwaite also showcased his talents defensively, winning four tackles – the second-most of any Everton player behind Amadou Onana – whilst making three clearances and contributing to the club's 13th clean sheet in the league.

The defender also received an 8/10 match rating for his display from Liverpool Echo journalist Chris Beesley, with the sky being the limit for the former Carlisle United youngster.

Why Branthwaite is becoming Everton's best player

There's no denying Jordan Pickford has been a pivotal part of the club's recent form, with the goalkeeper part of the defence that has kept the second-most clean sheets in the Premier League this campaign.

Dyche's side have also conceded just 49 times this campaign, with only the top three of Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool boasting better records in 2023/24.

However, when taking into consideration that this is Branthwaite's first full season of top-flight football in England, he's excelled and taken the league by storm at Goodison.

Within the Toffees squad. the 21-year ranks second for interceptions, clearances and blocks – with only experienced defender Tarkowski getting the better of the youngster.

He's also proved to be a threat at the opposite end of the pitch, scoring on three occasions, including a crucial goal in the win over local rivals just a couple of weeks ago.

After such an impressive season, it's no surprise to see his name being linked with big clubs such as Manchester United, with Erik ten Hag's sold holding a keen interest in the defender ahead of the summer.

Whilst any deal for the youngster would see the club make a huge profit on his £1m transfer, they must do everything to keep hold of the centre-back with Branthwaite undoubtedly set for big things.

He's been a real key to the Toffees' excellent defensive record, with the club unlikely to be able to reinvest a huge fee on a replacement given their recent struggles with PSR.

Chelsea could immediately bench 4/10 ace who lost the ball every 7 minutes

Chelsea clawed back a two-goal deficit to claim a point against Aston Villa in the Premier League during the Saturday evening kick-off.

The Stamford Bridge faithful must have thought it was going to be another heavy defeat, similar to the 5-0 thrashing they received at the hands of Arsenal in midweek, as Villa scored twice in the first half.

Conor Gallagher and Mauricio Pochettino

Goals from Noni Madueke and Conor Gallagher brought the Blues level, and it looked as though they secured the win as Axel Disasi found the back of the net with minutes left, but the goal was ruled out due to a foul in the build-up.

While several players showed plenty of grit to get the club back into the game during the second half, Mykhaylo Mudryk was particularly poor throughout the clash.

Mykhaylo Mudryk’s game in numbers vs Aston Villa

Having failed to showcase his talents during the midweek hammering against Arsenal, Mauricio Pochettino unleashed him once again in the starting XI, hoping for a slightly different result.

Naturally, a similar thing occurred on Saturday evening. The Ukrainian managed to take just 38 touches during the contest – the fewest of any starter besides Nicolas Jackson – while completing 18 of 23 passes, hardly the stats of a player who was keen to get involved at every opportunity. He also lost possession 12 times against Villa – once every seven minutes – proving very wasteful in the rare moments he had it at his feet.

The winger did make three key passes and had two shots, albeit off target, along with succeeding with two of his five dribbles, but he failed to really have any standout moments, something which is becoming a regular occurrence in a Chelsea shirt.

So poor was his display that football.london gave him a match rating of just 4/10, with journalist Bobby Vincent stating that ‘Mudryk was tame. So tame. Whenever he got in a position of note, he was so wasteful. A very frustrating player to watch at times’ and this really sums up his spell in London.

Mykhaylo Mudryk’s stats this season for Chelsea

In the Premier League this term, Mudryk has started only 14 games for the Stamford Bridge side, scoring four goals and grabbing two assists.

The 23-year-old has also created five big chances, averages one key pass and 1.2 successful dribbles per game, which is ok, but nothing more.

Mudryk

Considering the Blues shelled out a staggering £88.5m to sign the winger from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023, his returns this season have been way below par.

Indeed, across his 53 games in a Chelsea shirt since his move, Mudryk has found the back of the net on just six occasions, chipping in with a further four assists.

This means the youngster has cost the Blues £8.85m per goal involvement during his time in London, rinsing the club dry.

Does he have a future at the club? Or will Pochettino sell him this summer in order to remain within financial fair play regulations?

Whatever happens, his performances need to vastly improve, delivering two dismal showings in the space of five days. It would not be a great surprise if he drops to the bench against Spurs in a few days time. That will, however, depend on the fitness of Raheem Sterling.
