Crystal Palace fans react to Cenk Tosun injury news

Crystal Palace have announced that Cenk Tosun’s loan spell has been cut short and he has returned to Everton due to sustaining a long-term injury.

The striker has injured his knee and estimates suggest he could be sidelined for up to six months, and it therefore makes sense for his rehabilitation to take place back at his parent club.

Tosun made an immediate impact for the Eagles when he scored on his full debut against Manchester City, with his header helping his team to a point at the home of the champions.

He only played five games for the club but his performances and determination left a lasting impression on supporters, many of whom have been quick to praise the Turk upon hearing the bad news.

As well as praise, there is also sympathy being expressed, which is no surprise given the extent of his injury, and how quickly the Palace fanbase took to him, despite Palace failing to win either of the matches he started in.

It seems that many fans would have been keen on signing the 28-year-old on a permanent basis, something which reportedly still remains a possibility despite his setback.

As well as the support being shown for Tosun, some fans have reacted to the news by criticising Steve Parish and the transfer business that was conducted in the January window, or rather the lack of activity.

Life after football: Do you know what all of these former players did next?

Tosun was the only arrival and now he is no longer at the club, leaving Roy Hodgson back at square one.

Elsewhere, Palace supporters have been engaged in debate about players’ performances over the last few weeks…

Meyer shows why Hodgson contract was a mistake

Roy Hodgson’s new contract at Crystal Palace has been signed, sealed and delivered.

The former England manager has signed a new one-year extension with the Eagles, which will keep him at Selhurst Park until the end of next season. In all fairness, it is something that he probably deserved purely based on the results he has managed.

With nine games of the 2019/20 campaign left, Palace are currently in 11th position with 39 points to their name – they are 12 clear of the relegation zone and should be able to fight another day in the top flight.

There are said to be assurances that he will have money to spend next summer, and some of the players who have blossomed under the 72-year-old – such as Jordan Ayew, who has eight goals so far this term – will likely be happy with the news he will be staying at the club.

Max Meyer, though, might be feeling quite the opposite.

The 24-year-old joined from Schalke in 2018, and will have been hoping to feature regularly for Crystal Palace in the Premier League. However, he has made just 13 appearances in the competition overall this term, with Hodgson instead choosing to place him on the bench.

Meyer is a technically gifted player – he played Futsal as a child, which is popular in Brazil, and he has even been dubbed the “German Messi” in the past – yet Hodgson just doesn’t seem interested.

Looking at the signings the former England boss has made, there have been very few “flair” players, and even less in terms of those who have succeeded. Victor Camarasa was another who was a ball-player, yet he lasted just six months on loan before returning to Spain – he made only two appearances in all competitions.

Hodgson, it seems, is an old-fashioned manager who prefers more pragmatic players – Wilfried Zaha being the exception. Which is all well and good, but it makes Meyer’s arrival totally pointless – especially considering he is earning £125,000-a-week according to Sportrac. With him having a three-year deal, that means he will cost the club £19.5m in wages – fortunately, he arrived on a free transfer.

Hodgson has got results, but it has come to the detriment of good football – Palace have scored just 26 goals in 29 league matches this season. Clearly, with the signing of the likes of Meyer, there is some kind of desire to see more a more expansive style of play, but you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.

Hodgson’s contract, perhaps more importantly, makes little sense in this case – he cannot be trusted to generally get the most out of exciting, attacking players that will no doubt keep the fans interested.

Meanwhile, this youngster is showing shades of Wilfried Zaha.

What have we learned about Nathan Ferguson this season?

West Brom have every right to be buzzing with their season so far.

The Baggies have been brilliant in the Championship, losing just five times all season to work themselves into a strong position, sitting second-place in the division with just nine games to go.

However, there are mixed feelings to be had about one man.

Indeed, Nathan Ferguson has had a breakthrough season at the Hawthorns, but we have learnt a lot about him as a player, both positively and negatively.

Here’s three things that have become apparent throughout 2019/20…

Best position

Ferguson is an exciting young talent in that he can operate on either side of the defence, but as is the case with many players it seems as though he has one side he prefers.

Indeed, the teenager performs better when he’s utilised on the right rather than on the left.

His WhoScored average rating is better when he plays on the right, while he also makes three times as many key passes per game as well as more clearances per game.

The full-back may have a bright future, but he needs to make right-back his home long-term.

Lack of loyalty

While there is a lot to be happy with Ferguson for, one trait that he seemingly doesn’t possess is loyalty.

The teenager’s contract is up at the end of the season, and he’s made it abundantly clear that he isn’t going to be signing an extension.

The full-back has been linked with the likes of Juventus and Atletico Madrid, so you can understand why he’s got his eyes on a move, but he’s not shown any semblance of loyalty after coming through the ranks at the Midlands club.

Replaceable

While it’ll be sad to see Ferguson go at the end of the campaign, it won’t be the end of the world for the Baggies.

Ferguson has missed 16 games this season, and West Brom have lost just two of those matches, showing that they’re still a strong side without the young defender.

Hopefully, the Midlands club cope just as well when he leaves at the end of the season.

In other news, West Brom could be in for a bittersweet end to the season.

Wolves fans get a glimpse into the talents of Luke Matheson

Luke Matheson signed for Wolves in January 2020 and at the age of 17 he already has 36 professional appearances to his boast of.

He is fast making a name for himself having scored at Old Trafford earlier in the season, and there could be exciting times ahead for the full-back if he continues he current rate of progression.

Nuno Espirito Santo already seems a big fan of the youngster to bring him in at such a young age, perhaps because he has looked at home playing in League One this season.

The Premier League will be a big step-up but Matheson will likely take it in his stride, as he it seems to have numerous talents at his disposal.

He showed Wolves fans what he’s been up to during the lockdown away from the pitch and away from football, and he perhaps wouldn’t be out of place on The Great British Bake-Off.

Not many 17-year-olds would be getting up to such activities during this period, let alone professional footballers, so it is an intriguing look into his mindset and what makes him unique.

Many Wolves players have been putting each other up to various challenges and it would be amusing to see the youngster call out his soon-to-be teammates to test out their skills in the kitchen.

Meanwhile, another Wolves player has also produced a unique method to stay entertained and fit at the same time…

West Brom set to finally lose Nathan Ferguson

According to The Express and Star, Crystal Palace are confident they will complete their move for Nathan Ferguson when the transfer window opens this summer.

What’s the word?

The West Brom starlet was ever so close to a move to Selhurst Park in the January transfer window, with a reported £10m fee being agreed by the two sides.

However, the deal collapsed at the final minute when Palace appeared to pick up a problem with the defender’s knee during his medical examination – Ferguson has since undergone surgery to solve it.

Now, The Express and Star claim that with Ferguson’s contract set to expire in the summer, he is “destined to continue his career elsewhere”, and that Palace are confident they will finally get their man.

Moving on

Well, it appears the Ferguson saga is finally set to reach its end over these coming months.

Whilst the Baggies may have harboured hopes of retaining him for the long-term after his switch to Palace in the January transfer window fell through, this latest developments means they can finally start drawing up plans for the future.

The uncertainty surrounding him up to this point would have made it difficult for Slaven Bilic to truly start thinking about next season, and even for figuring out what their transfer plans should look like.

But if it’s now understood that Ferguson will leave, and will join Palace for a big-money deal, then Bilic can start planning on how to reinvest that potential money and which areas need strengthening ahead of their possible return to the Premier League for next season.

Meanwhile, West Brom should make keeping this man their priority.

Lancashire win thrilling clash

ScorecardJimmy Adams amassed a brilliant 194 off 507 balls but relegation-threatened Hampshire failed to prevent an County Championship defeat in a thriller against Lancashire at Liverpool. The 29-year-old left hander batted for 10 hours and 35 minutes, recording the longest innings of the summer and making the hosts sweat on a win which looked a near certainty at the start of the final day.Adams shared a last-wicket partnership of 88 inside 43 overs with Danny Briggs (15 not out off 97 balls) to help post a second innings total of 405 and set the hosts 168 to win in 33 overs after tea. Adams’ innings was the longest both minutes and ball-wise this season, beating Mark Ramprakash’s 564-minute 223 off 395 balls for Surrey against Middlesex in May.Left-arm swing bowler James Tomlinson then took three quick wickets to reduce Lancashire to 17 for three in the sixth over of their chase. But a 79-ball 51 from Shivnarine Chanderpaul took his side to the brink before Mark Chilton hit the winning runs off Dominic Cork with one ball and three wickets to spare.Tom Smith recorded figures of 6 for 94 from 41 overs to clinch career-best match figures of nine wickets for 134 runs in 53 overs. The medium-pacer bowled Michael Bates for 31, Cork and tail-ender Chris Wood during the morning session.Hampshire resumed the day on 275 for 5 with a lead of only 37. Adams and Bates shared 60 for the sixth wicket before Smith’s triple strike left the score at 298 for 8 in the 115th over.Tomlinson then offered a simple return catch off a leading edge to Sajid Mahmood before Adams farmed the strike from Briggs. Their stand started 40 minutes before lunch and lasted two hours and 40 minutes until Adams, who hit 20 boundaries, edged Kyle Hogg behind to wicketkeeper Gareth Cross in the 166th over of the innings.Tomlinson (3 for 27) then bowled Paul Horton off an inside edge, trapped Karl Brown lbw first ball and had Smith caught behind by Bates as Lancashire chased. Steven Croft edged Cork behind to leave the score at 44 for four in the 15th before Cross joined Chanderpaul to move things along. The hosts needed 102 to win off 15 overs with six wickets left. Cross was then caught at mid-on by Cork off Wood (three for 32) for 26 off 18 balls to reduce the score to 84 for five in the 21st over. But Mahmood, in the form of his life with the bat, joined Chanderpaul to put their side within reach. When he carved Wood to Adams at deep point for 24 Lancashire were 130 for six in the 27th over, needing another 38 with six overs left.Wood then had Chanderpaul caught behind off the first ball of his next over. Chilton finished 18 not out and Hogg 17.

Jonathan David sends Tottenham promising transfer message

Reported Tottenham Hotspur target Jonathan David has sent a clear transfer message to Premier League clubs wanting to sign him, saying the English top-flight is “somewhere I would love to play”, in an interview as per The Guardian.

What did he say?

The report says that Spurs were keen on the attacker before the current situation in the United Kingdom, with The Express saying at the start of March that they were one of a number of Premier League sides monitoring him.

The Canada international was asked about a number of different topics by The Guardian, including being linked with other clubs following his fine form for Gent – he has scored 23 goals and provided a further 10 assists in 40 appearances in all competitions for the Belgian outfit this term.

The 20-year-old said on a potential future move: “I just need to take a good step where I can make sure I am getting enough time on the pitch to keep developing. I don’t want to go somewhere and just stay on the bench so it’s about taking the right step.

“I want to become one of the best strikers in the world. That’s my goal. The Premier League is the best in the world and most competitive so obviously that is somewhere I would love to play in the future.”

Clear message to Daniel Levy

David obviously wants to play in England, and with Spurs needing back-up for Harry Kane during the next transfer window and The Express saying he could be available for just £20m, it seems like a bit of a no-brainer for the north London outfit.

They would be getting a young and promising forward who has proven in 2019/20 that he can both find the net and create.

The one issue could be that the Canadian says he doesn’t want to go somewhere and simply sit on the bench, and that could be a problem if he is brought in as a striker – he wouldn’t be displacing Kane in a one-up-top system.

The youngster is versatile though, and according to Transfermarkt he has played in a range of attacking positions this season, including as an attacking midfielder, a No.10 and on the wing.

He could even play upfront with the England captain if Jose Mourinho is willing to change formation.

This looks to be the sort of bargain deal Daniel Levy loves, and Spurs should try and get it done.

In other Tottenham news, loads of Spurs fans are absolutely raging after an official club Twitter post on Friday…

Spurs could pull off masterstroke with Declan Rice deal

As Jose Mourinho looks forward to his first summer in charge at Tottenham, he will know that the north London side may require a lot of wheeling and dealing to get the squad in his own image.

The Lilywhites have endured a difficult campaign this season filled with injuries and off-the-pitch turbulence, and it’s no surprise that before football was postponed, they found themselves lying in eight place in the Premier League and seven points off the all-important top four.

With finances set to be tight due to the current climate, Mourinho will certainly be wary of potentially not getting all the signings he needs.

But according to 90min, Spurs are the latest club to be interested in West Ham midfielder Declan Rice. And to even sweeten a potential deal to bring him across London, the Lilywhites are willing to offer Eric Dier as some sort of a part- exchange deal to convince the Hammers to sell one of their prized assets.

If Spurs can bring Rice to the club by offering smaller amount of money and giving back Dier, then it would go down as a masterstroke from Daniel Levy.

Dier hasn’t enjoyed the greatest seasons either on-the-pitch or off it, featuring only 14 times in the Premier League and of course getting into an altercation with a section of the Spurs support after the FA Cup defeat to Norwich earlier this year.

Both he and Rice are in a similar mould in terms of their playing styles, with the duo equally capable of playing the holding midfield role as they are at filling in at centre-back. But to put it bluntly, the latter is quite simply a much better upgrade on what Spurs currently have to offer.

As per Whoscored, Rice averages an impressive three tackles and 2.1 interceptions per game, and has a pass accuracy of 86.2% in the Premier League this season. Compare that to Dier, who averages just 1.4 tackles and 0.8 interceptions per game, and has a pass accuracy of 77.7%.

The Hammers man comfortably betters his Spurs counterpart in the key categories for their position, and it’s why Levy could kill two birds with one stone this summer. By getting rid of Dier, they would be cutting their losses on a player who just isn’t good enough at the level the Lilywhites need to be at.

And in the same deal, they would be getting someone in return who is markedly better and would improve Mourinho’s team straight off the bat.

Meanwhile, Spurs fans elated by this transfer report.

England look to learn but also forget

Not for the first time this year England were back in the nets trying to find a way to solve their problems against spin. The net session at the P Sara Oval was not a direct response to the demise for 80 against India – they had been scheduled for a likely training session in any case – but the events of the previous evening gave a clear focus to what was required.Andy Flower and Graham Gooch, two outstanding batsmen of spin in their day, gave plenty of throw downs and shared plenty of advice as they have done throughout the year. On the evidence of how the current crop played Harbhajan Singh and Piyush Chawla not all of it is being absorbed. The middle of a tournament is not the time to be trying to remodel techniques or radically change gameplans, but if England have serious ambitions of moving beyond the Super Eight stage they are going to have to adapt quickly. Their half of the draw has been termed the easier route to the knockout stage, yet each team they face will have bowlers to exploit their major weakness.Sunil Narine will be first, when they face West Indies on Thursday, followed by the more orthodox but no-less-effective Daniel Vettori then back to mystery with a four-over trial from Ajantha Mendis. Do not rule out Sri Lanka throwing in their wild-card, 18-year old Akila Dananjaya, either. It is those future challenges, rather than what happened on Sunday evening, that is now the focus of the England team.”It was a disappointing performance – we’re human enough to say that and realise that obvious fact,” Craig Kieswetter said. “We’ve played spin well; we’ve beaten Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan in the sub-continent before. It was just a bad performance.”We’re not getting too down about it. Confidence is still high; we’re still playing some great cricket and we’re pretty glad we’ve got that game out of the way at the best time possible.”Much like Stuart Broad’s assertion that England do not have a problem against spin it was not entirely convincing from Kieswetter, who top-scored in the 80 with 35 made largely before the spinners came on, but the quick-fire nature of the tournament does at least offer a chance to move on quickly. Kieswetter will also remember that England were far from convincing getting out of their group in 2010 – squeezing through without winning a game – before surging to the title.”What’s done is done. We did what we needed to do and qualified and now we’re through to the business part of the competition,” he said. “Now you’ll see the good teams put their hands up and actually put up performances that really matter.”But can England fine a way against spin? “You’ve got to be more streetwise, be prepared to score ugly runs. We’ve got to be adaptable to the wickets,” he said. “We played across the line a bit too much. We should have played a bit straighter.”We realise that; we’ve highlighted it and we’re obviously going to learn from that. It’s probably a good learning curve to have. It didn’t turn as much and we probably expected, and we played for a bit too much turn. The ball’s a bit more unpredictable here – it either spins or it doesn’t – it’s not as predictable as in England.”

Leeds fans react to Phil Hay tweet on Liam Bridcutt

Liam Bridcutt enjoyed a short spell at Leeds United back in the tumultuous Steve Evans days but he’s been the talk of the town on social media this week thanks to Phil Hay.

The Athletic correspondent posted an article to Twitter about the 31-year-old, who now plays for Lincoln City on loan from Championship rivals Nottingham Forest, and the Whites faithful have been embroiled in debate.

The piece leads with Gus Poyet’s outlandish suggestion that Briductt is ‘good enough for Real Madrid’.

The defensive midfielder recorded 53 appearances across two seasons at Elland Road and picked up 15 yellow cards, via Transfermarkt.

Bridcutt went on to become captain under Garry Monk before leaving for Forest in 2017 and fans have been rather respectful on social media about his role at the club.
