Everton fans would re-sign John Stones amid doubts over Manchester City future

The Mirror reported that John Stones’ future at Manchester City is in doubt over the weekend, and Everton fans on Twitter made their feelings clear over whether they would welcome the England international back at Goodison Park.

The centre-back left the Toffees for the Etihad Stadium in a £47.5m deal in the summer of 2016, making 123 appearances in all competitions for them since.

The big move for the then 22-year-old came off of the back of 95 outings in total for the Merseyside outfit, where he showcased his ability and calmness in possession of the ball.

The Mirror says that the current Premier League champions are yet to offer the Englishman a new deal even though his current one is into its final two years, leaving some question marks over his long-term future.

Many Everton supporters have made it clear that they would like him back however when asked the question by a fan account on Twitter, with one saying “he would walk back into our team”.

Here’s what they said…

Other fans chose to focus on what their manager could do with Stones, with one believing that Carlo Ancelotti “would take him up a level or 2”, and another suggesting he is the type of centre-back who would suit the Italian.

Call yourself an Everton expert? How much did each of these January signings cost?

Indeed, we have seen in recent games that Everton are now starting to play out from the back as the former Napoli boss wants, even if he labelled it as a “dangerous” tactic after the Brighton win, but they perhaps don’t have the players who are really comfortable playing that way.

Another chose to compare Stones to current Toffees central defender Michael Keane, who started against the Seagulls on Saturday but has come under criticism for his performances previously in 2019/20.

Comparing the duo’s stats this season certainly makes the former look to be the better option when it comes to possession, with an average passing accuracy of 94.4% compared to 80.4% for Keane in the Premier League this term.

QPR: Fans delighted with Liam Kelly’s performance against Leeds United

Queens Park Rangers fans were delighted with what they saw from Liam Kelly on Saturday afternoon and took to Twitter to laud his latest display for the club.

Indeed, the 23-year-old shot-stopper played a pivotal role for the Rs as he helped Mark Warburton’s side record an impressive 1-0 victory over promotion-chasing Leeds United and gave Rangers the much-needed three points.

Whilst Nahki Wells opened the scoring for the west London outfit, the Scottish ‘keeper saved a penalty from Patrick Bamford in the second half as they continued to frustrate Marcelo Bielsa’s side. The performance may have helped justify his inclusion in the starting XI as well, as Kelly had not featured in the league since their defeat in the reverse fixture back at the beginning of November (as per TransferMarkt).

Fans were clearly delighted with what they saw from him in between the sticks, with many flocking to his Twitter to post to share superlatives and praise, with some calling for him to replace Joe Lumley as the number one, whilst others had felt he was easily their Man of the Match.

Here are just some of their reactions to Kelly’s Twitter post…

Manchester United fans prefer Diogo Dalot to Aaron Wan-Bissaka after 6-0 win

Manchester United fans have taken to Twitter to reveal that they prefer Diogo Dalot to Aaron Wan-Bissaka, following the 6-0 win over Tranmere in the FA Cup.

Dalot has only made six appearances across all competitions this season following the £50m signing of Wan-Bissaka back in the summer, with only four of those coming as starts.

However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer named the Portuguese youngster in his starting XI for the trip to Tranmere, and the 20-year-old managed to score a wonderful goal while also providing a real attacking threat down the right.

Dalot had three shots – two of which were on target – while he also delivered two crosses into the box.

His defensive qualities were also on display, making three successful tackles.

Following his performance in the 6-0 win, some supporters on Twitter have revealed their preference for the No.20 instead of Wan-Bissaka, who has made 28 appearances in all competitions this season while scoring no goals and grabbing one assist.

Let’s see what the United supporters have been saying…

To kick off the reaction, this fan said that “apart from throwing slide tackles” they don’t know what the former Crystal Palace man does better than Dalot, before stating that he’s a better full-back and not just because of his goal.

Elsewhere, ‘Angel Ochoa’ said that “we have a gem” in Dalot, and then told Wan-Bissaka to “take a seat” – ouch.

Another fan named Salihu said that they know who their right-back is, having previously mentioned that the Englishman would have been “all muddled up” against Tranmere’s winger.

Lastly, these three fans all highlighted how much more attack-minded the Portuguese right-back is compared to the 22-year-old.

@Magical_Matic said that the £19m full-back – signed by Jose Mourinho – is the only player at Solskjaer’s disposal who “understands how overlaps work” before saying it’s “absolute madness” how he doesn’t get game time.

‘Odo’ added that a fully-fit Dalot is supposed to be first-choice, as Wan-Bissaka “isn’t offensive enough”.

Arsenal’s loan move for Pablo Mari can unlock Granit Xhaka’s true potential

When Granit Xhaka walked off the pitch in Arsenal’s clash against Crystal Palace, launching a verbal tirade at the booing Gunners fans, there only seemed to be one way things were heading: the exit door.

The Switzerland international’s public show of disapproval of the supporters’ treatment inside the Emirates that day was the culmination of a Gunners career that had seen him become a constant target for criticism.

His later statement about the whole event was more to provide justification to his actions, than an outright apology. And when reports emerged the likes of Hertha Berlin were interested in signing him this month, it looked like the man signed by Arsene Wenger back in 2016 was off for pastures new.

But Mikel Arteta’s arrival has heralded a major turnaround in fortunes, and not just in the case of the Arsenal team as a whole. The Spaniard has only lost once in his opening eight games in charge, but has been more than willing to extend an olive branch to Xhaka.

“I really like him. The way we want to play, if we get him on board then he can be a tremendous player for the football club.”

The Swiss midfielder has now been fully reintegrated into the Arsenal set-up once more, and he is set to stay for the foreseeable future. And as the Gunners understandably have their attentions on signing players themselves, Pablo Mari’s arrival at the Emirates should be greeted with great enthusiasm by Xhaka himself.

Whilst Mari is a centre-back, his profile and style of play can help unlock the best out of Xhaka. The Flamengo defender is naturally left-footed, and is therefore a far more comfortable fit to play on that side.

Having a right-footed defender in that left centre-back role means they are more inclined to check back on to their stronger foot, and thereby narrow the entire pitch. Their passing is likely to go through the middle third, rather than opening the game up to the flanks. As a result, Xhaka often has to come deeper to collect the ball on the left-hand side for the Gunners. If he then gets caught in possession, there is no-one else behind him to help cover for his mistake.

But having Mari in the team can push Xhaka a touch further forward, and the Spaniard can help dictate the play from the back. As per Whoscored, in his most recent season with Flamengo, the 26-year-old averaged an impressive 57.2 passes per game at an accuracy of 87.8%.

Xhaka no longer has to worry about coming into a nominal third centre-back position to switch the play to the opposite flank, or play those chipped balls into the attacking left-back. The former Borussia Monchengladbach ace can focus more on playing those penetrating between-the-line passes into the likes of Mesut Ozil and Alexandre Lacazette in attack.

So whilst the Gunners’ loan swoop for Mari is predominantly about them signing a new central defender, it can also have the added bonus of helping unlock Xhaka’s true potential too.

Meanwhile, Arsenal fans have lauded this ace who was “playing like prime Cesc”.

Arsenal fans drool over Emile Smith Rowe after goal-scoring display on loan

Having been sent on loan for the second-half of last season at RB Leipzig, Emile Smith Rowe may have hoped to have made a bigger impression in Germany than he ultimately did.

Sadly for him, injuries played a big part in restricting him to just three appearances in the Bundesliga, and even that only totalled 26 minutes of football.

The start to this campaign saw him make six appearances for the Arsenal first-team, but perhaps with one eye on his long-term development, he was once again sent on loan in the January transfer window.

The Arsenal academy product is now plying his trade for Huddersfield in the Championship, and he enjoyed an impressive performance in their 3-2 defeat to Fulham at the weekend. The 19-year-old scored one and made one, and after seeing his display, Gunners fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the midfielder.

Some fans brought Mesut Ozil’s name into the conversation, with a couple suggesting that they do a role reversal and send the German to Huddersfield and bring Smith Rowe back.

One particularly excited Arsenal fan meanwhile suggested Smith Rowe could be the best of the bunch in terms of the Gunners’ considerable amount of academy talents.

If Smith Rowe continues to play regularly as he has done in his first few games with the Terriers – he has started the last three matches in the Championship – then he will no doubt come back to Arsenal as a more refined player.

Lower league football will help toughen him up to the rigours of the Premier League, and with there still being question marks over Ozil’s long-term future at the club, he could play a hugely prominent role for the Gunners over the near future.

Meanwhile, this Arsenal star badly let Mikel Arteta down with a really disappointing display.

Newcastle players react to Allan Saint-Maximin’s Instagram post

The likes of DeAndre Yedlin and Rolando Aarons, who is currently on loan at Motherwell, have been reacting to the post, with the former commenting “STARBOY”.

Saint-Maximin is a flashy player both on and off the pitch. His style of play is full of skill and technique – for example, the 4.4 dribbles he has averaged per match is the third-most in the Premier League – whilst he is also a bit of a fashion guru. He sports a Gucci headband during games, and he has said himself that the image of him in France is indeed flashy.

He may want to concentrate slightly more on his performances on the pitch – he has just one goal and one assist in the Premier League so far this term.

Newcastle fans react to link with John McAtee

Newcastle did some good business during the January transfer window.

The Magpies signed Danny Rose – a Champions League finalist – Valentino Lazaro and Nabil Bentaleb on loan until the end of the season. All three have experience in top leagues, as well Europe’s premier club competition. They also tried to sign Boubakary Soumare from Lille, but that didn’t go through in the end.

Now, they are said to be eyeing Scunthorpe’s John McAtee – which is a bit of a drop off from those players previously mentioned. The report from the Grimsby Telegraph says that multiple sources have confirmed the interest.

This has got the Toon supporters talking, and it seems some aren’t exactly thrilled with the news.

It’s not exactly the kind of link that will get supporters on the edge of their seats. With just one goal in 12 league appearances this term, he is far from prolific – that is the same as Joelinton, who has as many strikes in 25 Premier League matches to date.

Some believe – and hope – this is for the club’s U23s squad.

This would make far more sense – Steve Bruce is crying out for some proven quality in front of goal, and McAtee doesn’t appear to be able to provide that.

Some fans, meanwhile, have linked this with Ivan Toney.

Toney was signed by Newcastle in 2015, but made just four appearances in three years before being sold to Peterborough. This term, he is the top scorer in League One with 23 strikes, and is said to be attracting interest from Bournemouth. He may be the one that got away.

Crystal Palace: Batshuayi sends one word Instagram message to Schlupp

Michy Batshuayi has sent a one word message in response to Jeffrey Schlupp’s latest Instagram post.

The Chelsea striker – who spent the second half of last season on loan at Crystal Palace – was replying to his former teammate’s upload showing himself working out in Dubai ahead of the Eagles’ Premier League game against Newcastle on Saturday, their first game back following the winter break.

Batshuayi netted five goals in nine Premier League starts under Roy Hodgson last term, which would be enough to place him as the south Londoners’ second-top scorer this season, one behind six-goal Jordan Ayew – Crystal Palace have scored the fewest goals in the Premier League this campaign with only 23 to their name.

However, since returning to Stamford Bridge, he has failed to make a single start in the Premier League or the Champions League, with just two starts each in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup to his name – the Belgian has still netted a respectable six goals.

Fabinho’s lost battle vs Gilmour will worry Klopp

Liverpool’s blip got a whole lot worse on Tuesday evening in the FA Cup.

After losing 1-0 to Atletico Madrid and 3-0 to Watford, the Reds were defeated by Chelsea 2-0 in the FA Cup, meaning that they are now unable to win the treble.

Whilst that would have been a big ask anyway, you would have expected them to attempt to do so with less of a whimper just a couple of weeks ago.

Despite the league being all but sewn up even with that loss to the Hornets – the Reds can still lose six of their last 10 games and still be crowned champions – Jurgen Klopp decided to put out a mixed side at Stamford Bridge. However, there were still a number of first-team regulars included in the starting XI – Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane and Fabinho, for example, were all present.

Watch Liverpool Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

It has been a mixed campaign for the latter. He had started the season in fantastic form, even leading Gary Neville (Sky Sports via Metro) to call him the best defensive midfielder in the world, but his injury against Napoli in the Champions League saw him ruled out until the New Year. He has failed to get back up to speed following his return from the sidelines too – without him starting from November 11th, the Reds kept nine clean sheets in 12 matches, but his three starts in the Premier League in 2020 have seen Liverpool ship five times.

This midweek, he found himself facing 18-year-old Billy Gilmour in the middle of the park. The teenager is a promising talent, but he is yet to start a top-tier match – Fabinho will have expected to get the better of his adversary.

In the end, though, it was the young Scot who prevailed. He was given the Man of the Match award for his display, whilst the Brazil international could only pick up a SofaScore rating of 5.9 in response – the worst on the pitch.

Klopp currently has problems in midfield. Fabinho, quite clearly, is under-performing, whilst Jordan Henderson, his captain and voice on the pitch, remains on the sidelines. Naby Keita, too, was unavailable against Chelsea, and even if he had been able to play, the 52-year-old’s clear frustration with the Guinea international against West Ham makes it unlikely he would have featured from the start.

Part of Liverpool’s success this term has been the possibility to rely on back-up options when they are brought into the action, but there is little option for Klopp but to persevere with the former AS Monaco man right now. It’s a concerning situation but the manager will be hoping that his form can once again go in the right direction.

Elsewhere, Liverpool are desperate for this man’s leadership.

Aston Villa: Fans disappointed at Frederic Guilbert’s performance against Leicester City

Aston Villa fans had a lot to be angry about after Monday’s poor performance in their 4-0 loss to Leicester, but many were fuming with the display of defender Frederic Guilbert.

The right-back has played in 23 games for the Villans this season, and it seems that many fans all believed that last night was one of the defenders worst performances for the club since he signed from Caen for £4.50 million in 2019 (Transfermarkt).

The defender had a torrid time against Harvey Barnes, with the creative midfielder getting in behind the full-back on multiple occasions, Barnes also scored two and was awarded Man of the Match (BBC Sport).

Guilbert lost possession 21 times during the fixture, and only 47% of his passes were accurate (Sofascore). Such stats are ones that Villa can not afford to be having at the moment as they continue to fight for safety in the Premier League. Dean Smith will be hoping for more when they play Chelsea at the weekend.

Here are what fans had to say on the defender’s performance:
