Liverpool identify their next Joe Gomez for just £500k more in bargain deal

After a disastrous few weeks, Liverpool have now reportedly joined the race to sign a bargain Bundesliga ace in an attempt to solve their current defensive problems.

Klopp fails to rule out Liverpool return

After four defeats in a row, the last thing that Arne Slot needed to see was a Liverpool legend’s admission that he could still one day return to the club. But that’s exactly what Jurgen Klopp handed him when speaking to Steven Bartlett on The Diary of a CEO podcast. Speaking more openly than ever before, the German failed to rule out an Anfield return.

That said, Klopp also took the time to hand Slot plenty of praise, having watched on as the Dutchman secured Premier League glory in his first season at the club.

The Liverpool legend said: “I tried to make it as easy as possible for the guy who would come after me. We have had a lot of contact after I left. He is a super good guy and got the best out of the team.”

Whether Slot will turn to Klopp for advice in the face of Liverpool’s current problems is something that only he will know, but there’s no denying that he needs a solution from somewhere.

Liverpool dud who "plods around like he's 40 years old" is on borrowed time

A number of Arne Slot’s players are underperforming at Liverpool.

ByMatt Dawson Oct 20, 2025

The Reds were once again fragile from the off on Sunday, with Manchester United the latest team to benefit, and Harry Maguire’s late goal ensured that it’s four defeats in a row for the Premier League champions.

For all their spending in the summer, breaking their transfer record twice, Liverpool’s weaknesses are clear for all to see and Michael Edwards must return to the transfer market in search of a solution in January.

Liverpool enter race to sign Diogo Leite

As reported by Milan Live, Liverpool have now joined the race to sign Diogo Leite from Union Berlin in 2026. The Portuguese defender will reportedly be available for just €5m (£4m) next year and has attracted interest from those at Anfield as well as AC Milan and Wolverhampton Wanderers as a result.

It should come as no surprise that Liverpool have found themselves in the race to sign the central defender. As things stand, Slot has just three senior centre-backs to choose from in Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez, who fans will remember cost a similar fee when he joined from Charlton back in 2015, just £3.5m.

Although Marc Guehi is officially set to leave Crystal Palace as a free agent in the summer, there’s no guarantee that Liverpool will win the race for his signature in such circumstances. Instead, they may be better off targeting someone like Leite.

Dubbed “superb” by scout Jacek Kulig during his Porto days, Leite represents the kind of bargain deal that Edwards initially became known for at Anfield. Now, he could return to what he does best to get the Reds back on track.

'When the Racecourse is rocking, anything is possible!' – Rob Mac sends heatfelt thank you to Wrexham fans after seeing Phil Parkinson's side complete stunning comeback against Coventry

Wrexham co-owner Rob Mac sent a heartfelt thank you to the club fans after they staged a brilliant comeback win over league leaders Coventry City on Friday. After a disappointing exit from the Carabao Cup earlier this week, the Red Dragons were desperate for a victory in the Championship and Kieffer Moore delivered it for the Welsh club with an outstanding hat-trick.

  • Wrexham stage brilliant comeback win

Wrexham registered only their second win in their last six outings across all competitions as they came from behind to beat Coventry City 3-2 in the Championship on Friday. Ephron Mason-Clark broke the deadlock for the league leaders in the 25th minute, before Moore equalised for the hosts at the hour mark. The English forward subsequently put the Red Dragons in front with a second goal nine minutes later, before completing his hat-trick in the 83rd minute. Tatsuhiro Sakamoto pulled one back for the Sky Blues, but ultimately Phil Parkinson's side walked away with crucial three points.

The win came after the club's disappointing exit from the Carabao Cup during midweek as they went down against League One Side Cardiff City. The final whistle at the Racecourse Ground was met with boos and jeers from frustrated supporters, with their anger compounded by another lifeless performance. However, the situation completely changed after the win over Frank Lampard's club as the home fans cheered loudly for the team throughout the 90 minutes.

'When Racecourse is rocking, anything is possible'

Thanking the club fans, Hollywood star and Wrexham co-owner Mac wrote on X: "Having spoken to Phil and a lot of the players, it’s abundantly clear that the support they received against Coventry made a massive difference. It’s hard to be that loud and positive, every game for 90+ min over an entire season. But I thought it worth mentioning that when the Racecourse is rocking, anything is possible. This is your team. We’re all invited and honored to be a part of it. Support them in whatever way brings you joy but know that for sure, you are making a difference in their success. Thank you!!!!"

  • Coventry's first loss of the 2025-26 season

Coventry City, under Lampard's tutelage, kicked off the 2025-26 campaign on a bright note as they went unbeaten in their first 12 matches and collected 28 points, their greatest ever start to a league campaign in history. They won eight out of their first 12 league matches and were flying high until they met Parkinson's Wrexham. Despite taking a lead with half an hour of the game, the Sky Blues conceded their first loss of the new season.

With the game against Wrexham falling on the evening of Halloween, Lampard was forced to skip his annual Halloween tradition — dressing up and trick-or-treating with his children around his London neighbourhood.

The 47-year-old took charge of the Sky Blues in November last year and guided them to a fifth-place finish. However, they were eliminated from the play-off after losing against Sunderland in the semi-final. This time around, though, the Chelsea legend is determined to progress to the top-flight.

    Wrexham eye back-to-back Championship wins

Markram, Bavuma return for SA's white-ball tour of Australia

Jansen misses out as he’s recovering from surgery to his left thumb while Miller will be playing in the Hundred

South Africa’s regular white-ball captains Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma will return to lead the T20I and ODI squads, respectively, for next month’s tour of Australia. Markram was rested from South Africa’s Test and T20I series in Zimbabwe while Bavuma missed the Zimbabwe Tests with a hamstring injury he sustained at the World Test Championship (WTC) final in June. Both skippers will have relatively full-strength squads available to them.Notably, the squad was announced a week before Patrick Moroney, the new convenor of selectors, starts work on August 1, which means this was the last squad that all-format Shukri Conrad picked independently.”It’s great to have our senior players back in the mix after their rest following the WTC Final,” Conrad said in a statement. “Their experience and quality add real value to the group as we continue to build a strong core in both formats. Every series from here on plays a part in shaping our squads for next year’s T20 World Cup and the 50-over World Cup at home in 2027.”Of South Africa’s regulars, Marco Jansen and David Miller are the only two not named. Jansen is recovering from surgery to his left thumb from an issue picked up at the WTC final, while Miller will be playing in the Hundred. He is expected to return for South Africa’s white-ball tour of England in September.South Africa’s squads for Australia tour•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

The rest of South Africa’s frontline attack, led by Kagiso Rabada in the seam department and Keshav Maharaj in the spin one, are all included. But Maharaj is not part of the T20I squad.Instead, left-arm spinners George Linde and Senuran Muthusamy, who are both currently in Zimbabwe, will play the T20Is alongside legspinner Nqaba Peter as South Africa assess their options for next year’s T20 World Cup. Tabraiz Shamsi, who opted out of a national contract last year, is not included in either squad. Conrad had indicated prior to the Zimbabwe series that he would speak to Shamsi to discuss his future.”Unfortunately, things got away from me, and I was never able to have that chat,” he said. “The spinners who have been selected have the inside track.”South Africa’s T20I playing group sees the return of Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs to the batting line-up, and the retention of Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Dewald Brevis, who are both in Zimbabwe. Lungi Ngidi, Nandre Burger, Corbin Bosch and Kwena Maphaka make up the seamers, but Gerald Coetzee is not included.Rassie van der Dussen was not included in the ODI squad for Australia•Zimbabwe Cricket

“There are only so many quicks you can put in your team in terms of balance,” Conrad said. “The players who have been selected are ahead of Gerald in the pecking order. In the 50-over squad, I wanted to try and get as many allrounders in the squad. You cannot ignore what Corbin Bosch has done. Gerald sits behind him.”The ODI squad’s batting line-up has the four named above as well Matthew Breetzke and Tony de Zorzi. Wiaan Mulder provides an all-round option in Jansen’s absence. While Rassie van der Dussen, who has South Africa’s second-highest ODI average, is not included in the ODI squad, Conrad also conceded that he is “very much in contention for the T20 World Cup”.”He gives you the option of batting at the top and at No. 3, and he is a great in a leadership role. With the 50-over [team], because I’ve got time before 2027, it gives me the opportunity to blood new players and see how they develop.”T20I squadAiden Markram (capt), Corbin Bosch, Dewald Brevis, Nandre Burger, George Linde, Kwena Maphaka, Senuran Muthusamy, Lungi Ngidi, Nqaba Peter Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, Prenelan Subrayen, Rassie van der DussenODI squadTemba Bavuma (capt), Corbin Bosch, Matthew Breetzke, Dewald Brevis, Nandre Burger, Tony de Zorzi, Aiden Markram, Senuran Muthusamy, Keshav Maharaj, Wiaan Mulder, Lungi Ngidi, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, Prenelan Subrayen

Russell takes his leave as T20 World Cup preparation comes into focus

Both sides could hand out debuts during the series as they look to firm up combinations ahead of next year’s main event

Andrew McGlashan19-Jul-2025Big picture: T20 World Cup preparation begins amid a farewellThis series marks the beginning of something – the build towards next year’s World Cup in India and Sri Lanka – but the first two matches are also an ending: Andre Russell will retire from international cricket after the Jamaica leg of matches, another member of the powerhouse West Indies T20 era who has called time.Russell was part of both the 2012 and 2016 T20 World Cup triumphs for West Indies, one of finest hours coming in the latter of those when he made vital runs against India and claimed nine wickets in the tournament. It took a while for Russell to click in T20Is: until the end of 2015 he averaged 11.52 with the bat (strike-rate 122.01) and 48.90 with the ball from 33 matches. Since then, in 49 matches, he has averaged 28.63 with a strike-rate of 177.11 and claimed 50 wickets at 26.56.Related

But he won’t be around for an attempt at a third World Cup title, instead opting to bow out on his home ground at Sabina Park where he can expect a hero’s welcome over the next few days. For two matches, Russell will be part of a West Indies’ batting order that, on paper, looks more formidable than the Test line up that recently crumbled for 27 albeit they are also without Nicholas Pooran who recently ended his international career. However, they have won just two of their last 16 T20Is including 3-0 sweeps against Bangladesh and England.Meanwhile, Australia have been light on T20s since the last World Cup with just nine schedule matches (one of which against England was abandoned) but this series begins a run of 16 fixtures leading into the next edition. This isn’t a full-strength squad with Travis Head, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc rested – all of whom will likely feature in the World Cup – but it retains many of the key T20 personnel and is an important opportunity for captain Mitchell Marsh to bring the side together.4:10

Gill, Washington, Jadeja tons script India's great escape

An epic series will be decided at The Oval. England lead 2-1 after 20 tense days of Test cricket but were denied a decisive win by five sessions of doughty, determined batting in which India lost only two wickets. Not even Ben Stokes, battling cramp and a shoulder injury, could pull this one off, and was forced to settle for only the second draw of his captaincy tenure.India were 1 for 2 at lunch on the fourth day, frazzled after more than 150 overs in the field, and still trailing by over 300 runs. But Shubman Gill’s new-look side underlined their character with two mammoth, match-saving partnerships – Gill put on 188 with KL Rahul, and Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja put on an unbroken 203 – to ensure India escaped with a draw.Related

  • Weary England show their frustrations as Test ends on sour note

  • India's grit outlasts England's endurance to make 2-2 a possibility

They can no longer win the inaugural Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, but will travel down to London on Monday battered, bruised and bullish. India’s batters not only saved this match, but ground England’s bowlers down: they spent 257.1 overs in the field in Manchester, including 143 in the second innings, and now face a three-day turnaround before Thursday’s fifth Test. The finale was farcical: Stokes offered a draw at the start of the last hour but Gill had no interest, instead allowing his two allrounders to complete their centuries. England were incensed, serving up some 35mph/56kmph lobs, but India’s players celebrated on the balcony as their batters filled their boots.”It’s going to happen in a flurry, lads,” Ben Duckett had promised his team-mates during the second session. In fact, it never happened at all. It was long established that no captain had ever won a Test match at Old Trafford after winning the toss and choosing to bowl; Stokes asked his team to defy history, but they could not.It was Gill who had walked in to face a hat-trick ball in the first over of India’s second innings shortly before lunch on the fourth day. When he walked back off just over 24 hours later, he had become only the third man to score four hundreds in a Test series as captain, going past 700 runs for the tour. Every time he has reached 20, he has gone on to score a century.1:19

Harmison: ‘A little bit farcical towards the end’

He was supported by two marathon efforts from his spin-bowling allrounders. Washington batted at No. 8 in the first innings but was promoted to No. 5 after Rishabh Pant’s injury, and made his maiden Test hundred, while Jadeja capped his stellar series with the bat. Much as it frustrated England, both players deserved centuries, and had earned the right to make them.Stokes’ bowling fitness was uncertain overnight: he did not bowl at all on the fourth day after a heavy workload in the series – and a five-wicket haul in the first innings – having retired hurt during his century. But he shared the old ball with Liam Dawson early in the day and threatened to break the game open, creating two early chances in an eight-over spell. He grimaced after every ball he bowled and repeatedly stretched out his right shoulder, but Stokes bowled with good pace and found variable bounce on a good length outside the right-handers’ off stump. He had Gill dropped early on, Ollie Pope failing to cling on to a stinger at short cover, but then trapped Rahul on the back pad to have him lbw for 90.It was a brilliant spell, one which exposed just how much England had missed his bowling on the fourth evening. Stokes was in pain, then inflicted some on his opposite number: he found some steep bounce to strike Gill on the helmet – via the glove – with a lifter which exploded from a good length.3:12

‘Would they have walked off?’ – Gambhir on Stokes’ draw offer

But Gill pressed on, steering Chris Woakes through the off side then yelping in celebration as he brought up his fourth century of the tour. His dismissal, edging Jofra Archer behind, represented an opening, not least when Jadeja edged his first ball to first slip. But Joe Root put the catch down, and England hardly created another chance all day.Dawson wheeled away for 47 overs in the second innings and bowled tightly, but rarely threatened the edge, and the seamers had nothing to work with: Archer exchanged tense words with his captain over a field change, Woakes bowled slower balls into the rough, Brydon Carse was hardly seen, and Stokes bowled only three overs after lunch.Jadeja and Washington had 89 and 80, respectively, when Stokes offered a draw, but Gill looked out steadfastly through the dressing-room window. It prompted Brook to bowl some filth, and both batters reached three figures off his bowling: Jadeja roared in celebration on reaching his by lofting a straight six, while Washington raised his arms as he sauntered back for two.It made for a strange end to a compelling Test match. Only 24 wickets fell across the five days, and the finish was an anti-climax. But the fraying tempers were the result of India’s resistance across five sessions of determined batting. It seemed unfathomable on Saturday afternoon, but they will head to The Oval believing that they can snatch a series draw.

Pete Alonso Hulked Out After His Third Strikeout Against the Red Sox

The New York Mets beat the Boston Red Sox 8-3 on Wednesday night. Francisco Lindor stayed hot, going 2-for-5 with a double and Jesse Winker hit his 14th home run of the season while the bullpen went five scoreless innings.

It was the kind of all-around team performance you need when your cleanup hitter goes 0-4, which is exactly what Pete Alonso did. Alonso struck out three times and was very frustrated by his performance. His third strikeout came in the eighth inning with two runners on and the Mets holding a one run lead.

Upon completion of his swing he immediately broke his bat over his leg.

That's a good old fashioned baseball tantrum right there. Just make sure you're capable of pulling it off because when it doesn't break, it just looks painful.

That's why Alonso hits the gym so hard in the offseason. That and the home runs.

Not Burn: Newcastle have ideal Hall replacement in "promising" 18-year-old

For all the concerns surrounding Newcastle United’s lack of cutting edge this season, their defence has remained reassuringly reliable.

Eddie Howe’s side may still be searching for rhythm in attack, but defensively they’ve been among the Premier League’s most resolute outfits.

They’ve kept six clean sheets already this campaign and boast the second-lowest expected goals conceded (4.9) in the division, behind only Arsenal.

That solidity has been essential in keeping Newcastle within touching distance of the top four, particularly given their Champions League commitments.

Malick Thiaw, signed from AC Milan, has seamlessly filled the void left by Fabian Schär’s injury, forging a composed, ball-playing partnership with Sven Botman at the heart of defence.

Calm on the ball and dominant in duels, the German has been one of Newcastle’s most consistent performers so far.

Yet, just as things were settling, Howe has been hit with significant defensive injuries.

Both Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall – the club’s two starting full-backs – have suffered setbacks that will sideline them for an extended period.

Their absence leaves Newcastle light in wide defensive areas, forcing a reshuffle that may test the depth of the squad during a congested autumn fixture list.

For a side competing on multiple fronts, rotation is vital.

But with natural full-backs out and makeshift options stepping in, the coming weeks will reveal whether Newcastle’s defensive solidity can withstand the strain.

Hall and Burn's success at Newcastle

Few players symbolise Newcastle’s progress under Howe more than Hall.

Still only 19, the left-back has made the position his own since arriving from Chelsea, blending energy with composure in possession.

His overlapping runs and delivery from wide areas have been key to Newcastle’s attacking transitions, while defensively, his pace allows the team to hold a high line.

However, Hall’s hamstring injury – which Howe has confirmed “won’t be short-term” – is a major blow.

It leaves Newcastle without their first-choice full-back during a period when they face high-pressing, counter-attacking sides both domestically and in Europe.

In his absence, Dan Burn has been tasked with filling the void.

The 6 foot 7 defender has long been a fan favourite for his commitment and leadership, but left-back is far from his natural role.

Burn’s experience and aerial dominance make him a solid stopgap, yet his lack of recovery pace can be exposed, particularly when facing quick, direct wingers.

One-on-one duels and balls played in behind remain areas of weakness.

Howe’s tactical adjustments have tried to compensate, with Botman often covering wider to protect Burn.

But upcoming fixtures present new challenges.

Newcastle’s next league outing sees them travel to Brighton, where Yankuba Minteh’s speed and trickery could test Burn’s positional awareness.

Stronger sides than Nottingham Forest – who rarely exploited the left channel in Newcastle’s last league match – will certainly target this imbalance.

There’s also the question of whether Newcastle could turn to the free-agent market for temporary cover.

While Howe is reluctant to disrupt squad chemistry, the defensive injuries are stretching his options thin.

With both full-backs unavailable and Champions League fixtures piling up, the pressure is mounting for a new solution – perhaps one that already exists within the club’s own ranks.

Newcastle's academy left-back solution

Enter Leo Shahar, the 18-year-old full-back who many within Newcastle’s academy believe is ready to make the leap.

A natural right-back who is also comfortable on the left, Shahar joined from Wolves last year after a decade in their youth system, where he was regarded as one of the most technically gifted defenders of his age group.

Since arriving at St James’ Park, he has quietly impressed at youth level.

Shahar has already made four Premier League 2 appearances this season and featured twice in the UEFA Youth League, scoring once.

Premier League 2

299 minutes

UEFA Youth League

2 appearances

180 minutes

His consistency and versatility have earned him a growing reputation, and his development was rewarded when he made his first-team debut in pre-season against Atlético Madrid.

Internationally, Shahar’s rise has been just as rapid.

Having represented England across multiple youth levels, he made his under-19 debut in September, capping off a year of steady progress.

Youth coach Thomas Hammond has described him as a “promising talent,” words that suggest he may soon be trusted with senior minutes.

Tactically, Shahar fits the modern mould Howe demands from his full-backs: quick, comfortable in tight spaces, and adept at playing out from the back.

His natural balance on either side of the pitch could be invaluable as injuries continue to bite.

And unlike Burn, he offers the pace and agility to handle one-on-one duels – an attribute that Newcastle have missed in Hall’s absence.

With Newcastle set for a gruelling run that includes Champions League clashes and key Premier League fixtures, Howe may have little choice but to dip into his academy talent.

It’s a risk, but one with potential reward. Giving Shahar his chance now could accelerate his development while easing the load on an injury-hit squad.

Newcastle’s long-term vision under Howe has always been about building sustainably – blending elite signings with homegrown talent capable of stepping up when needed.

Leo Shahar might just be the next example of that philosophy in action.
