The new Rooney: Everton star is already becoming a "game-changer" for Moyes

Despite having to settle for a 0-0 draw last time out in the Premier League, the vibes are still at an all-time high at Everton.

After all, on another day, the Toffees would have picked up another victory in that unfortunate stalemate versus Aston Villa, with David Moyes and Co. somehow squandering 20 efforts in total across the course of the frustrating clash.

With Everton sitting in a pretty sixth position at the moment, Moyes will be hopeful that the glory days of his previous long reign as boss are back to stay, with the much-loved Scotsman once consistently steering the Merseyside outfit to top-half finishes.

No relegation worries seem to be seeping in, with the former West Ham United boss-turned-returning Toffees manager even possessing his next Wayne Rooney now, arguably, to ramp up the nostalgia even more.

Rooney's heroics at Everton

Much like Moyes, Rooney would also return to Merseyside in 2017.

The celebrated attacker had gone on to Manchester United in 2004 and won trophies galore, with a sublime tally of 253 goals and 142 assists coming his way. Safe to say, Rooney was correct to originally leave his hometown club behind, even if it was so early into his fledgling career.

He still showed he could turn on the style on his return, too, with this memorable effort against West Ham United, sending the Goodison Park masses into raptures.

Across the full 40 games on his return, there were no signs that his legs had gone, which might well have been a worry so deep into his esteemed playing days, with 13 goal contributions notched up in total, making it a special reunion for the magical forward.

Amazingly, despite Rooney being such an enigmatic, one-off presence on the pitch, Moyes might well feel he has his next coming of the entertaining great at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, even so early into life in their brand-new home.

Everton's new "game changer"

Everton fans will be far happier going to watch their team now than the gloom and doom tenure of Sean Dyche, with the attractive football being served up.

Indeed, away from firing blanks against the Villans last time out and Leeds United on the opening day, the Toffees have managed to bag an electric five goals from their other clashes this season, with Jack Grealish often at the heart of a vibrant attacking move working out.

Many would have surely anticipated that this move for Grealish to leave Manchester City for pastures new on Merseyside would pay off, with the former Villa midfielder a star on the same level as Rooney’s excellence when on top form.

But, nobody would have quite expected how easy the 30-year-old would find it to instantly hit the ground running in the manner he has.

From just five games under Moyes’ wing, Grealish already has a blistering four assists next to his name, with his split-second ability to carve out an opening or excite the Toffees contingent with an effort of his own making him a Rooney-like presence already.

To further validate the comparison point, it’s clear that Grealish – much like his revered counterpart – needed a switch like the one he sealed to Everton to get his waning career back on track, with the three-time Premier League winner losing his way somewhat in Manchester.

Similarly, it was clear from Rooney’s final few seasons at Old Trafford that he wasn’t the spritely star he once was, with rampant injuries often getting the better of him.

But, as is clear now with the two mavericks in question, form might be temporary, but class is permanent.

Grealish’s class has been so prominent so far at Everton that he has even been hailed as a “game changer” for his standout efforts by analyst Matt Smith.

Amazingly, this resurrection of the skilful Englishman might well stand him in good stead to be remembered as an all-time great in the Premier League, alongside Rooney, with the Toffees faithful already heralding him as an icon in the here and now, that’s for sure.

England quicks make quick work of South Africa in Youth ODI

Five-wicket win opens series at Western Province CC in Cape Town

The captains toss up at Western Province CC in the first Youth ODI•ECB

England Under-19 91 for 5 (Mayes 51) beat South Africa Under-19 87 (Minto 3-15) by five wicketsA dominant bowling performance from England Men U19s paved the way for a comfortable five-wicket win over South Africa Men U19s in the opening Youth ODI at Cape Town.New-ball duo Harry Moore and James Minto did the damage up top taking five wickets between them as the hosts were skittled for just 87.Opener Ben Mayes then broke the back of the chase with 51 from 48 balls while debutant captain Archie Vaughan added 26 as the Young Lions reach their target in 18.3 overs.Moore and Minto immediately got to work after the hosts opted to bat and subsided to 33 for six.The tone was set for an impressive Lions display in the field when Joe Moores held a sharp catch at backward point when Adnaan Lagadien arrowed a backfoot drive off Derbyshire right-armer Moore.Durham left-armer Minto had already had opener Shaylen Pillay caught by wicketkeeper Thomas Rew on his way to figures of innings-best three for 15.Spinners Taz Ali and Farhan Ali ensured the wickets continued to tumble before Worcestershire’s Jack Home – one of three debutants alongside Vaughan and Aaryan Sawant – ended the innings.Home first had Enathi Kitshini caught at backward point by Moores before pulling off a direct hit at the non-striker’s end to run out Nqobani Mokoena.Mayes and Vaughan then combined in a 64-run stand for the second wicket to ensure there were no jitters for the Young Lions. Mayes took the lead role, reaching his half-century from 45 balls, and despite some late wickets the tourists were always on course for a comfortable win.The Lions can secure the three-match Youth ODI series on Sunday when the second match is also played at Western Province CC in Cape Town.

Worth more than Isak & Gyokeres: Arsenal struck gold on "world-class" star

Last year, Arsenal finished second in the Premier League for the third successive season, but who can deny that Mikel Arteta’s burgeoning side have gotten better and better since the start of his reign?

Injuries ruined what could have been the year for the Gunners, but Arteta and new Emirates technical director Andrea Berta have come together and devised a summer plan, which is angled toward trophy-winning success in 2025/26.

Arsenal'sGabrielJesuscelebrates scoring their first goal

A host of signings have been welcomed to north London over the past two months, but it’s the latest which is the most exciting, the most emphatic.

Maybe, having signed Viktor Gyokeres, Arsenal have what they need to crown the Arteta era.

Why Arsenal signed Viktor Gyokeres

Arsenal have needed a reliable frontman for some time, one who will provide a confident stream of goals across the campaign.

And in Gyokeres, they have their man. Having bagged 97 goals and 28 assists besides over just two years with Sporting Lisbon, it’s inconceivable that the 27-year-old won’t bring a degree of prolificness beyond that of the Gunners’ current crop.

Despite interest from elsewhere – namely from Manchester United – Arsenal have agreed a deal worth £64m for the Swede, who will finalise his big-money move this weekend.

Many supporters, no doubt, would have liked to have signed Alexander Isak from Newcastle United. The Sweden striker, Gyokeres’ countryman, has informed his club that he wishes to explore a move away, with Liverpool leading the race for his signature.

Arsenal might not sign Isak, but they have one of the game’s most clinical strikers all the same. And anyway, with Bukayo Saka fully fit and raring to take the division by storm next year, the soon-to-be No. 14 is in safe hands.

In fact, it is Saka who stands above these other players. Arsenal have hit the jackpot on their homegrown hero, who is undoubtedly the cream of the crop.

The Arsenal star worth more than Isak & Gyokeres

Saka, 23, is one of the Premier League’s leading players. Pundit Karen Carney has said that “it’s scary how good he will be in three or four years”, and she’s right.

He’s the real deal, all right, and he’s already proven himself to be a game-changing player of the highest standard. After breaking out of the famed Hale End academy, he has made 263 senior appearances for Arsenal, scoring 70 goals and providing 71 assists.

You felt this throughout the 2024/25 campaign, with Saka sidelined for a significant stretch after Christmas that ultimately proved detrimental in the quest for silverware.

But he is, of course, fit again, and will play an instrumental role for club and country next season, challenging for the biggest prizes in red before donning that white shirt and fighting for gold over the pond with Thomas Tuchel’s England.

There’s indeed a case to be made that he is one of the most valuable players in the game, worldwide. This is actually backed up by the numbers, with one site penning him down above two aforementioned names.

Well, according to the renowned research centre CIES Football Observatory, the £98m-rated Saka is valued higher than both Isak and Gyokeres.

Newcastle’s centre-forward is only marginally behind the Three Lions sensation at £97m, while Gyokeres falls some way below at £68m, and this is reflected in the sealed deal for the number nine in north London.

Isak, of course, has a price tag of £130m as Newcastle prepare for his potential, but Saka, too, would demand an astronomical amount if any suitors approached Arsenal.

It bears testament to Saka’s inborn ability, his work-rate and indeed Arteta’s shrewd coaching that he has reached this level. He has many levels yet to go, but at this stage already, he is undoubtedly “world-class”, as has been said by pundit Rio Ferdinand.

Arsenal might have a prolific marksman in Gyokeres, and Isak may have been labelled “the best striker in the Premier League” last season by Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher, but Saka is something special, something different.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The 23-year-old played 34 Ligue 1 games in the 2024-25 season, in which he scored 14 goals and registered 11 assists. Despite strong performances, he was occasionally benched in big matches, with starters like Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue preferred. This season, Barcola has started all four of PSG's matches and with Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue out injured, he will be even more important over the coming weeks.

PSG condemned the French Football Federation following the injuries to Dembele and Doue sustained during international duty. Both players were sidelined with significant muscle injuries just before key club fixtures. The club expressed frustration over what it described as a "total lack of consultation" from the federation regarding player fitness and scheduling, accusing them of jeopardising PSG’s Champions League and Ligue 1 campaigns.

This is the first time Pant will play first-class cricket since his car accident in December 2022.Mohammed Shami, however, isn’t part of any of the four squads. Wow: Arsenal prepare £40m+ bid to hijack Chelsea move for "fantastic" star

Arsenal are ready to spend big this summer and could now gain the upper hand on Chelsea in pursuit of a talented star plying his trade at the Club World Cup, according to a report.

Arsenal ready to make statement signings

The Gunners hope to establish themselves as a frontrunner in the race for the Premier League title and Mikel Arteta is set to be backed this window as high-profile targets are identified at the Emirates Stadium.

In an honest assessment of his former side’s hunt for a striker, Arsenal icon Theo Walcott has pointed out that the club need to pursue someone in Liam Delap’s mould as they search for a new source of goals.

Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres are Arsenal’s two main striking targets, and the latter has given his priority to Arteta’s side following an excellent campaign at Sporting.

That development comes in spite of interest from Manchester United, which will undoubtedly provoke optimism among a support desperate to see the final piece of the jigsaw added over the coming months.

However, it has to be taken into account that signing a forward isn’t the only requirement to exceed their rivals’ points tally next season; you also need an effective foil to maximise attacking output across the board.

With that in mind, Arsenal now have a winger on their radar that they could steal from under the nose of rivals Chelsea, according to reports.

Arsenal prepare bid to sign Borussia Dortmund star Jamie Gittens

According to reports in Spain, Arsenal are preparing a bid to sign Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens, and he is viewed internally as someone who would fit their philosophy to develop talent over the long-term.

There have even been claims the Blues still want him and could make a new bid in days.

Labelled “fantastic” by Nuri Sahin, the England Under-21 international registered 12 goals and five assists as Borussia Dortmund left it late to secure Champions League qualification.

Bukayo Saka’s injury issues throughout the campaign demonstrated that additional depth is needed for the Gunners to juggle domestic and European endeavours. Taking that into consideration, what better way for Arsenal to secure another talented outlet out wide than to beat Chelsea to Gittens’ signature.

Wiaan Mulder shines as Leicestershire hold nerve at Chester-le-Street

Undulating match falls Leicestershire’s way after Durham recover from 19 for 3 in the chase

ECB Reporters Network12-Jun-2024

Two run outs killed Durham’s chase•Getty Images

A brilliant Leicestershire bowling performance, led by South African all-rounder Wiaan Mulder’s 2 for 19, underpinned a come-from-behind 10-run win over Durham as they defended 141 in a thrilling Vitality Blast clash dominated by the bowlers at Seat Unique Riverside. The Foxes were under pressure at the halfway point having posted 140 for eight, including Rishi Patel’s opening 48 off 44 balls and 3 for 20 from England Test quick Matthew Potts.Despite sluggish conditions, Durham would still have been confident of victory. But it wasn’t to be. Mulder’s seam accounted for two early wickets as they slipped to 19 for 3 and failed to recover, falling short of chasing 17 off the last over.Ashton Turner hit 49 for Durham, who finished on 130 for 8, added to Graham Clark’s 53 not out off 56. But Josh Hull’s final over sealed Leicestershire’s third win and consigned Durham to a third defeat. Both have played five.Inserted, Leicestershire started brightly, led by opener Patel, who posted his second successive 48.Left-arm spinner Callum Parkinson had Sol Budinger caught behind – 10 for one after five balls – but Patel and Rehan Ahmed (20) played with intent. One Ahmed ramped boundary over the keeper off Jonathan Bushnell’s seam was particularly memorable.Even when Ahmed fell run out at the striker’s end by Nathan Sowter’s throw from mid-on, the Foxes were encouragingly placed at 53 for 2 after seven overs with Patel set.But spin and pace off, including seamer Ben Raine with two wickets, put the squeeze on expertly – and boundaries were limited.Patel hit Sowter’s leg-spin for six over long-on but was bowled next ball aiming to slog-sweep the same bowler – 90 for 3 in the 13th. The good work of spinners Sowter and Parkinson, who struck once apiece, opened the door for the seamers to burst through.Raine (2 for 28) and Potts claimed all of their wickets in the latter stages of the innings as the Foxes fell from 95 for 3 in the 14th over to 128 for 8 in the 19th.Raine removed overseas duo Mulder and captain Peter Handscomb, lbw and bowled – the latter for 26, and has now taken seven wickets in his last two Blast appearances. Potts had Louis Kimber caught and bowled Ben Cox and Lewis Goldsworthy. But wickets continued to fall to keep this game in the balance, with Durham slipping to 19 for 3 in the fifth over. After towering quick Hull had Alex Lees brilliantly caught behind by a diving Cox, Mulder’s seam had compatriot David Bedingham caught at mid-on and Ollie Robinson trapped lbw with successive deliveries. However, that was when Turner intervened, with the help of fourth-wicket partner Clark, who played wingman in an 85 partnership. Turner slog-swept spinners Goldsworthy and Ahmed for two big sixes over midwicket.Durham were back in control but not home and hosed, especially when Turner was run out at 104 for 4 in the 16th. Raine and Paul Coughlin holed out off Ben Mike and Goldsworthy, and things turned quickly.Bushnell was run out and Potts bowled in a fabulous penultimate over from seamer Scott Currie, which only cost three. That left excellent Hull – 1 for 16 from his four overs – with plenty of breathing space. And despite Clark reaching his fifty, he was unable to find the boundary at the end. It proved costly.Durham bowled well, but Leicestershire were even better.

109-cap international once worth £100m is now open to joining Liverpool

Liverpool will soon look to build on winning the Premier League title and new reports have now offered encouragement to the Reds in their hunt to sign a world-renowned star.

Liverpool held by Arsenal after conceding two-goal lead

In their first home match since becoming champions, Liverpool were held by Arsenal in a 2-2 draw despite opening up a comfortable advantage courtesy of Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz. Gabriel Martinelli and Mikel Merino hit back for the visitors to steal a point, but the main talking point was supporters’ mixed reaction to Trent Alexander-Arnold’s appearance from the bench.

Liverpool – Trent Alexander-Arnold

Coming off the back of his decision to leave his boyhood club on a free transfer, there are plenty of fans who made their frustration known despite the backdrop of a brilliant season for all involved at Liverpool. Arne Slot will be keen to banish any negativity present at Anfield, which is likely to disappear promptly in the summer once high-profile targets become public knowledge.

Real Madrid superstar Rodrygo could join the Reds to add a layer of elite quality on the right flank, illustrating a marker of FSG’s ambition to keep the club at the summit of English football for time to come.

Fewer touches than Alisson: Slot must axe 5/10 Liverpool dud after Arsenal

Lyon’s Malick Fofana may arrive at Liverpool to replace Luis Diaz, offering another inkling regarding the type of profile Slot wants as part of his project once the window opens. Next term, the Reds’ divisional rivals are likely to be stronger and in a better position to compete for the Premier League crown, meaning statement additions are necessary to add shine to a squad bristling with talent.

This is something they could now achieve if all goes to plan, per recent developments.

Kevin De Bruyne tempted by Liverpool move amid conflicting reports

According to reports in Italy via Sport Witness, Kevin De Bruyne is seriously considering a proposal from Liverpool and could be tempted by the prospect of one more season in the Premier League before moving to the MLS or Saudi Arabia.

It is important to point out that there have been conflicting stories surrounding the Manchester City icon – claims of a Liverpool offer being made for the 109-cap Belgian star have previously been circulated. On the other hand, Fabrizio Romano has said that Liverpool are not in talks to sign De Bruyne.

Either way, the 33-year-old is possibly the most lucrative free agent on the market this summer after deciding to leave the Etihad Stadium – City were placing a £100m price tag on him last year amid interest from the Middle East.

In a transitional season for the Citizens, De Bruyne has struck six times and delivered eight assists. Those may not be groundbreaking numbers, but the fact he has created 55 chances in the Premier League is enough to showcase his appeal.

Despite the rivalry that exists between Liverpool and Manchester City, Slot could pull off one of the most-talked about signings over recent years if the man in question’s willingness to move to Anfield is indeed legitimate.
