Diana Edulji: Women's IPL 'ambitious', but T20 Challenge should 'definitely have a fourth team'

“It’s better to move one step at a time than to have a big thing and it flops and it closes”

Annesha Ghosh06-Mar-2021Diana Edulji has put her weight behind an expanded Women’s T20 Challenge for the 2021 season, saying she would “definitely have a fourth team” on her wishlist. But Edulji, the former India captain who was also a member of the BCCI’s Committee of Administrators between 2017 and 2019, feels the idea of a full-fledged IPL-style women’s league is “ambitious” at present.”This year, if it [the Challenge] is in India, given the Australian, England, New Zealand players will be available if the tournament runs in this season, maybe a fourth team will come in,” Edulji told ESPNcricinfo ahead of India’s return to international cricket after a 364-day hiatus. “Players from those teams, the big guns, will give us a wider range, that will help us and the girls will get extra matches. I would definitely have a fourth team on my wishlist for this year. A fourth team is not a bad idea.Related

“It may be that the BCCI is thinking of a four-team tournament this year. I’m not sure because I’m not in touch with anybody. But last year, before the tournament got postponed in March because of Covid, they were planning on having four teams.”Debates around a women’s IPL have been on for some time. From Meg Lanning and Alyssa Healy to India’s senior core – Mithali Raj, Jhulan Goswami, Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana – all have insisted that a women’s T20 competition modelled on the men’s IPL is the big step-up awaiting female cricketers. In December 2019, though, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly said that a seven- or eight-team women’s competition was at least “four years away”.In February last year, while India were carving out their run to the T20 World Cup final in Australia, the BCCI announced that the 2020 edition of the T20 Challenge would comprise four teams and seven matches. But though the tournament, along with the IPL, eventually went ahead in the UAE amid the pandemic, the length of T20 Challenge and the number of teams remained the same – three teams and four games – as the 2019 edition. No Australian players participated in it owing to a clash in scheduling with the WBBL, and several prominent stars from New Zealand, England, South Africa and West Indies also missed out.

“I feel the BCCI is taking it [the resumption of women’s cricket] slowly because they don’t want problems with Covid hitting the women’s team completely because, see, we don’t have a wide range of players”Diana Edulji

Edulji said a full-fledged women’s IPL ran the risk of being a flop and closing down.”Look, I think we are trying to be a little more ambitious in saying we should have a separate IPL for women. It’s not that easy,” she said. “We will have to first build up our domestic sector again because of this gap. We’ll know what’s our domestic scene and know how the players are doing in the 50-overs format.”It’s better to move one step at a time than to have a big thing and it flops and it closes. I wouldn’t love that. It’s definitely not that there should be no Women’s IPL. Even if it takes another year or two it’s better. Waiting for it, slowly expanding the tournament – from three to four teams. If they have a chance to do it this year – it’s better.”Since last year’s T20 Challenge, while a few India players have participated in club-level invitational tournaments organised in different pockets of the country, none were involved in any international cricket. The national team is due to begin an eight-match assignment against South Africa in Lucknow on Sunday, their first international match since the T20 World Cup final on March 8 last year. By contrast, though, Australia, England, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa and West Indies, as well as Austria and Germany have all played at least one series this past year, after international cricket resumed in July following a four-month Covid-19-enforced hiatus.Diana Edulji takes part in an IPL auction during her time with the Committee of Administrators•Sportzpics”I feel the BCCI is taking it [the resumption of international cricket for its women] slowly because they don’t want problems with Covid hitting the women’s team completely because, see, we don’t have a wide range of players, so we have to be extra careful because of the bench strength not being there and, god forbid, if something happens,” she said.Edulji explained that not losing perspective in the pandemic-affected world was vitally important when reviewing India’s lack of cricket in the year gone by and the choice of South Africa as the opposition to kick off preparations for the 2022 ODI World Cup.”Looking at the Covid situation, I would give the benefit of doubt to, you know, don’t go by 365 days. As and when the women got a chance, they played. They played in Dubai [Sharjah, the T20 Challenge] and the series [against South Africa] that’s starting now,” Edulji said. “This series is just right at the moment, for the simple reason that we shouldn’t play England or Australia right away till we get into a little form or something. New Zealand has not suffered so much during the pandemic. They’ve been, touch wood, okay and even Australia – only certain places were affected. England and Australia – obviously, the players are ahead; they have played the Big Bash.”I would at the moment, therefore, start with a level-playing field for the women because South Africa is a good series to start with. They are not that good or not that bad either. So, slowly and steadily, we can take it, and then play the big guns, so we can get the confidence and go into the World Cup.”If we start losing the series with the top guns, it could upset our morale. One step at a time is the need of the hour. Players have to be a little patient, and I am sure the BCCI office-bearers and the management do consider – I know that they will not ignore women’s cricket.”

AL Cy Young Race: Garrett Crochet Is Just About Even With Tarik Skubal

A month ago, it appeared almost a foregone conclusion that Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal would run away with the American League Cy Young award. As the final month of the regular season nears, however, the race has opened up, thanks to a brilliant summer from Boston Red Sox star Garrett Crochet.

Crochet wasn’t charged with a loss throughout June and July, going 8–0 with 86 strikeouts and 18 earned runs in a 10-start span over those two months. He’s been no slouch in August, either, going 2–1 with 32 strikeouts and just four walks with nine earned runs in four starts.

At this point, there appears to be just two true contenders for the award, as Skubal and Crochet have effectively separated themselves from the pack. While Paul Skenes has virtually locked up the NL Cy Young, something many thought Skubal had done by the end of June, Crochet's dominance has him making a late push to prevent the Tigers lefty from becoming the first pitcher since Jacob deGrom in 2018–19 to win consecutive Cy Youngs.

Skubal's latest start only furthered Crochet's case for the Cy Young, too. Despite striking out 12, Skubal was tagged for six runs against the Athletics after surrendering a grand slam to Shea Langeliers. Though only one of those runs went down in the scorebook as an earned run due to an error earlier in the inning, it was the most runs Skubal has allowed in an outing all season, and the fourth time this month he's surrendered three or more runs.

Meanwhile, Crochet's last start on Saturday saw him fan 11 batters while surrendering just one run against the rival Yankees. It was the fourth time in his last five starts he'd allowed two or fewer runs, and the third time in that span he'd recorded double digit strikeouts.

On the year, both pitchers have outstanding and nearly identical numbers across the board. Skubal has a slight statistical edge, with a superior walk rate (3.9% versus Crochet's 6.3%) and higher WAR figures.

Crochet's 166 1/3 innings are his career high in innings pitched, and he's already well beyond his previous high of 146. He'll be in unfamiliar territory as he approaches the 200 innings mark, though that's a threshold Skubal has also not yet reached in his career. Considering Crochet was a reliever as recently as 2023, the fact that he leads MLB in innings pitched, albeit by the narrowest of margins over Skubal, is a testament to how quickly he's transitioned into his new role and developed into a top-tier starting pitcher.

The final month of the regular season will be critical for both pitchers to make their case as the American League's best pitcher. Neither of the two candidates boast very much experience pitching this deep into a season, and they'll both be under more pressure as they gear up to lead their respective teams into the postseason.

At this point, Skubal is still in the lead to win his second consecutive Cy Young. But a race that seemed like it may be wrapped up in the earlier part of the summer is once again wide open. Crochet is very much a contender to win his first Cy Young. If he continues to pitch at his current level, there's a real chance he could overtake Skubal by season's end.

Aston Villa & Emery now very keen on signing £35m striker

Aston Villa are now very interested in signing a “magnificent” striker, amid a major update on his future ahead of the January transfer window.

Villa eyeing striker as Emery drops Watkins update

Ollie Watkins got off to a slow start to the campaign, scoring just one goal in the Premier League prior to the brace against Brighton, and Unai Emery has now opened up about a potential reason for the dip in form, stating the striker has been struggling injury-wise.

Emery said: ‘He has a small pain in his knee from last year when we started the season in August,’

“Now he is feeling the same pain. He is not feeling 100 per cent and we are trying to manage it with him. We are trying to get to the stage where he is completely without pain – and through this, to feel better again and have the confidence to score.”

The England international may be under pressure to continue performing ahead of January, however, given that the Villans are now lining up a move for a new striker, with it recently being revealed that Emery is a huge fan of Brentford striker Igor Thiago.

There has now been a new update on Aston Villa’s pursuit of Thiago, with a report from Caught Offside revealing they are very interested in signing the centre-forward, who is highly likely to leave Brentford during the upcoming transfer window.

There could be competition for the Brazilian’s signature, however, with Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United also particularly keen to snap him up, after scouting him closely.

A deal may not break the bank either, with the interested clubs looking in to getting a deal done for a fee of around €35m – €40m (£31m – £35m).

Aston Villa now make contact to sign "wonderful" midfielder who would cost £0

The Villans have made an approach to sign a highly sought-after central midfielder.

ByDominic Lund Dec 2, 2025 Thiago could be "magnificent" signing for Aston Villa

The 24-year-old continued his fine form as Brentford defeated Burnley 3-1 at the weekend, bagging a brace, and manager Keith Andrews was very impressed with his performance, saying: “[Igor] has been magnificent. He was quiet in the first half. It was down to us too, not giving him enough service, and the opposition was denying him the space and opportunity.”

“But I felt he could impose himself a little more in the game, and he did exactly that in the second half.”

The Brentford star now has 11 goals to his name in the Premier League this season, the second-highest number behind Erling Haaland.

As such, a fee of around £35m could be an absolute steal for Thiago, and Villa should definitely make a January move.

Ferdinand says he spoke to manager in the Middle East this weekend about joining Liverpool

A manager has now been told to get “ready” by Premier League pundit Rio Ferdinand as Arne Slot remains under pressure to turn things around at Liverpool.

Slot reveals Liverpool injury news before Sunderland game

Relief echoed around the away end when Cody Gakpo slammed home Liverpool’s second of the afternoon against West Ham United on Sunday. It came moments after Jarrod Bowen uncharacteristically struck wide and signalled a much-needed victory for Liverpool. But the pressure is still on.

Semenyo upgrade: FSG enter race to sign £88m "superstar" for Liverpool

Liverpool and FSG are getting ready to sign a new forward in 2026.

The Reds’ 2-0 victory at the London Stadium, which also featured a first Premier League goal for record signing Alexander Isak, cannot be a false dawn. Liverpool must kick on, even if they are set to still be without Conor Bradley and must monitor the fitness of others in their next game against Sunderland.

Bradley could at least make a return when Liverpool square off against Leeds United this weekend, however, after Slot told reporters: “Conor got into a team training session yesterday for the first time. Not everything 100% yet so we have to manage that so don’t get hopes up too soon.

“We expect the same with Jeremie (Frimpong) next week. Unfortunately we play a lot of games, so he’ll miss a few. Hopefully Conor is available for Leeds.”

It’s arguably the biggest month of Slot’s Liverpool tenure. He remains under pressure to turn things around and will watch on as his side play six games in 24 days.

Anything but a convincing month of results could spell the end of the former Feyenoord manager, opening the door for an unemployed manager who Ferdinand has told to get “ready”.

Ferdinand tells Gerrard to be "ready" for Liverpool job

Whilst in the Middle East attending the Formula 1 Qatar GP, Ferdinand told Steven Gerrard to get “ready” to take the Liverpool job on an interim basis amid the pressure on Slot.

It would certainly be a brave call from Liverpool and from Gerrard if he took the management role. He previously won the Scottish Premiership with Rangers, but has since been sacked by Aston Villa and Saudi Pro League side El-Ettifaq.

Take the emotions out of the scenario and the Liverpool legend is simply not the most qualified for the job.

Five MLB Teams With the Most Demoralizing Offseasons Heading Into 2025 Season

Spring training has begun as MLB teams gather to prepare for the 2025 season. While not every roster is set and there are still moves to be made, it's fair to take a look back at the offseason that was and point out the teams who failed to improve as they should have.

Here's a look at the franchises that had the most demoralizing offseasons this winter.

San Diego Padres

This is not to say the Padres will be bad in 2025, as they'll almost certainly still be in the hunt for a playoff spot. Their inclusion here is more about how they went from one game away from eliminating the rival Los Angeles Dodgers in the postseason, to losing significant pieces of their roster without replacing them and missing out on their top target of the offseason.

Key contributors Ha-seong Kim, Jurickson Profar and Kyle Higashioka were allowed to depart in free agency and the team didn't spend to improve at those spots. Catcher Elias Díaz was brought back on a cheap deal, while Connor Joe and Jason Heyward were signed to form a platoon in left field. The recent signing of Nick Pivetta was shrewd, and lefty Kyle Hart dominated the KBO last season and is a lottery ticket signing.

Perhaps most painfully, the Padres threw a lot into landing Japanese phenom Roki Sasaki in what was a multi-year chase only to watch him sign with the Dodgers. A family legal dispute over the team's ownership was the icing on the cake of a brutal offseason for the Friars.

St. Louis Cardinals

The Cardinals firmly entered rebuild territory this offseason, as they didn't acquire anyone of note. They also looked to trade several veteran pieces, most notably third baseman Nolan Arenado. As of now, those moves haven't come to fruition. Spring training has begun with Arenado and veteran pitchers Sonny Gray, Steven Matz and Miles Mikolas still on the roster.

The Cardinals watched Paul Goldschmidt, Lance Lynn and Kyle Gibson walk away, while reliever Andrew Kittredge also left. The team is clearly attempting to turn things over to a younger generation led by shortstop Masyn Winn.

Until they move Arenado, the franchise will remain in a state of limbo. If things are bad early in the season, St. Louis could look to unload a number of pieces, including its best starting pitchers. If that was the route the Cardinals planned, it would have been better to do it this offseason.

Seattle Mariners

The Mariners didn't do much of anything this offseason after an 85–77 campaign that saw them miss out on a wild-card spot by one game. While every other AL West team made significant moves to improve, Seattle largely stood still.

Second baseman Jorge Polanco was re-signed and the team added Donovan Solano after a rebound season with the Padres. The team's offense was a mess in 2024 and it doesn't appear anything has been done to remedy that situation.

Luckily, the Mariners boast a phenomenal pitching staff led by Logan Gilbert, George Kirby, Bryce Miller and Luis Castillo. The rotation should keep them in a lot of games as long as the offense somehow finds a way to fix itself.

There is still time to make a move before the season starts, but the clock is ticking.

Minnesota Twins

The best thing about the Twins' offseason is that it is likely the last with the team's current ownership. The Pohlad family is on the way out and a sale could be done by Opening Day, though that's an optimistic timeline.

With budget constraints due to an impending sale, Minnesota's front office could only make limited moves this offseason. The most expensive was inking Harrison Bader to a one-year, $6.5 million deal. That's not going to have fans rushing to ticket windows. They worked a trade for former Dodgers top catching prospect Diego Cartaya and also signed Ty France and Danny Coulombe to cheap deals. Meanwhile, Carlos Santana and Max Kepler left as free agents.

There wasn't much the Twins could do as they're stuck in neutral until the team is sold. It was a rough offseason when you consider the team went 82–80 in 2024 and could have been a shoo-in playoff team in '25 with a few solid pickups this offseason.

Colorado Rockies

The Rockies lost the most games in the National League in 2024 and they could be MLB's worst team in '25. It's not that Colorado is making bad moves in an attempt to improve its roster—rather, the franchise is making no significant moves at all. The Rockies aren't really in a rebuild because they don't have much to rebuild with, but they're not competing either.

Colorado signed Kyle Farmer and Thairo Estrada to one-year deals this winter. Those are fine pickups for improving around the margins, but this is a franchise that needs a shakeup and hasn't had one in years. Ezequiel Tovar and Brenton Doyle are nice pieces, but outside of them, the roster desperately needs help.

There is some hope for Colorado, as top prospect righty flamethrower Chase Dollander should hit the majors this season, while slugger and 2024 No. 3 pick Charlie Condon should move quickly through the system. But they'll need quality teammates to surround them at the big league level, and the Rockies haven't seem to be interested in adding those over the past few years.

Jack Leach six-for hands Somerset two-day victory

Somerset 250 (Lammonby 89, Drissell 5-59) and 89 for 5 (Banton 33*, Parkinson 4-39) beat Durham 145 (Raine 42, Overton 6-23) and 190 (Gay 42, Leach 6-63, Vaughan 4-85) by five wicketsJack Leach returned figures of 6 for 63 as Somerset wrapped up a five-wicket Rothesay County Championship Division One win over Durham inside two days at the Cooper Associates Ground, Taunton. From an overnight 5 for 2 in their second innings, trailing by 100 runs, the visitors were bowled out for 190, left-arm spinner Leach claiming his second six-for in successive Championship games and off-spinner Archie Vaughan taking 4 for 85. Emilio Gay top-scored with 42, while Ben Raine contributed 36.That left Somerset needing just 86 to win, a target they achieved in 19.2 overs, not without alarm, at just before 4pm, Tom Banton ending unbeaten on 33 and Callum Parkinson taking 4 for 39. They took 20 points from the game to Durham’s three.Despite the turning pitch, Somerset elected to start the day with seam at both ends, skipper Lewis Gregory operating from the River End in tandem with Craig Overton.Gay and Neil Wagner were rarely troubled and had added 26 to the overnight score by the time Vaughan was introduced from the Marcus Trescothick Pavilion End.His first over went for 16, Gay striking fou fours and clearly intent on carrying the game to Somerset’s slow bowlers. Leach’s first over from the other end saw Wagner hit a six over long-off to bring up a half-century stand from just 57 balls.Gay struck a straight six off Vaughan and followed up next ball with a swept four as Durham’s total reached 76, just 29 runs behind, before Somerset made a much-needed breakthrough.Wagner had played well, facing 49 balls, before attempting to sweep a full delivery from Vaughan and falling lbw. It signalled a collapse as Gay quickly followed, caught by Overton, diving forward at short mid-wicket off Leach.Colin Ackermann bagged a pair when playing Leach in the air to mid-off where Banton took a similar catch to Overton’s, throwing himself forward. It was 92 for 6 when David Bedingham fell lbw to a Leach delivery that straightened from around the wicket.Durham were still 13 runs from avoiding an innings defeat. Ollie Robinson and Graham Clark ensured that indignity was avoided with a partnership of 40 before Robinson aimed a big drive at Vaughan and was bowled for 28.Vaughan almost struck again with his next delivery, Raine driving it back and the bowler just failing to hold a low catch diving full length to his right. The lunch score was 152 for 7, 147 runs having been scored in the session off 40 overs.Clark was unbeaten on 24 and Durham led by 47. Leach had figures of 4 for 50 from 17 overs and that became a five-for with 14 runs added when Clark’s 89-ball innings of 32 ended with an edged forward defensive shot to wicketkeeper James Rew.Leach struck again when George Drissell was caught and bowled off a leading edge. That left Raine with little option but to go on the attack and he cleared the ropes twice in a Vaughan over.Vaughan claimed revenge in his next over as Raine holed out to long-off and, with 46 overs remaining, a two-day finish was guaranteed. Not surprisingly, Durham gave the new ball to left-arm spinner Callum Parkinson, whose second delivery was deposited over midwicket for six by Tom Kohler-Cadmore.Drissell was greeted by a Josh Davey boundary to wide long-on as Somerset went for a quick kill. That plan suffered a setback when Davey fell leg-before to Parkinson, aiming to sweep, with the total on 13.It was 16 for 2 when Kohler-Cadmore edged Parkinson to second slip. Rew, on a pair, reverse swept his first ball for four and, on five, narrowly escaped a catch to second slip off Drissell.Tom Lammonby eased any tension with two fours off Drissell full-tosses, but was then bowled through the gate by Parkinson for 22 with Somerset halfway to their target. Rew quickly followed, caught at short mid-wicket to give Parkinson a fourth wicket.Tom Abell was bowled by Drissell on the back foot with 24 needed. But Banton used the sweep and reverse-sweep to good effect to see Somerset home.

Birmingham sold a bigger talent than Jordan James in £3m "freak of nature"

Birmingham City haven’t quite blown away the Championship when assessing the Blues’ recent form in the difficult division.

Pre-season expectations would have focused on Chris Davies’ men being in line for the unbelievable feat of back-to-back promotions, but after nine hit-and-miss games in the second tier, the West Midlands giants currently occupy an unsatisfactory 16th spot.

While Davies and Co. attempt to get their early-season back on track, former Birmingham star Jordan James is now strutting his stuff for a side further up the division in Leicester City, with some regret surely on the end of the second-tier newcomers for letting him go when they did.

James' fantastic start at Leicester

James is arguably a forgotten star at St. Andrew’s, having suddenly become a bright spark for the Blues when relegation was served up last year.

Indeed, despite his boyhood club falling to League One in depressing fashion, James would go on to bag eight goals during his swansong season, with a move to Rennes in France then opening up for the breakout Welshman.

He has since shown off a similar Midas touch in front of goal on the books of Marti Cifuentes’ Foxes, who he moved to this summer initially on loan, with a £4.3m fee in play if they want to make the switch a permanent one.

Off the back of this stunner, finding the back of the net away at Swansea City last time out, on top of him collecting a further goal and assist from five other Championship appearances, James has certainly lived up to his billing of being a “Rolls-Royce” performer that was once handed to him by content creator Jordan Webber.

Yet, despite James already impressing in his new location, Birmingham arguably sold an even bigger talent than their former academy sensation when letting another star go for just £3m back in 2023.

Birmingham already sold a bigger talent than James

At least with James, Birmingham managed to get the very best out of him, even if it was for a short but sweet period of time.

In the case of Jobe Bellingham, however, the Blues prematurely gave up their former number 27 before he could blossom into the world beater he is today.

Amazingly, Bellingham would never go on to pick up a goal or assist in the senior picture at St. Andrew’s from 26 appearances, despite scoring five goals in the Blues U18s set-up previously.

It’s even more staggering to think of Bellingham somewhat struggling to adjust to the men’s game when you consider what has since followed, with the 20-year-old going on to be an overwhelming success story with Sunderland, unlike James, who struggled to kick on away from his boyhood side, before then returning to the EFL after a mixed stint in France.

With hindsight on side, Sunderland very much won themselves an unreal bargain by picking up Bellingham just for £3m, with his first full season on Wearside seeing him pick up a standout seven strikes, even as the Black Cats finished in a lowly 16th spot.

It was the following season, with Regis Le Bris at the helm, that Bellingham would mature even more into the superstar we know today, with a further seven goal contributions coming his way to seal Sunderland’s long-awaited return to the big time.

If Birmingham had exercised more patience and batted away onlookers, it is staggering to think what they could have got out of one of their own, instead of cashing in when they did, with Dan Neil even going as far as to brand his ex-teammate as a “freak of nature” for how effortlessly he became a Sunderland first-team presence.

James’ sale would have been stomached far more easily, considering he was sold on for £1m more at the £4m mark, with midfield talents such as Tomoki Iwata also being purchased that same summer, making it very straightforward for Davies’ side to sweep his move to Ligue 1 under the carpet.

On the contrary, losing Bellingham for £3m is a major mishap looking back, with the brand-new Borussia Dortmund number seven moving to Germany this summer just gone for a whopping £27.8m.

While there will be regrets in the air about both homegrown products upping and leaving, Birmingham will not want to bathe in the past for too long, as they attempt to turn around their poor form when the international break is over.
