'When the Racecourse is rocking, anything is possible!' – Rob Mac sends heatfelt thank you to Wrexham fans after seeing Phil Parkinson's side complete stunning comeback against Coventry

Wrexham co-owner Rob Mac sent a heartfelt thank you to the club fans after they staged a brilliant comeback win over league leaders Coventry City on Friday. After a disappointing exit from the Carabao Cup earlier this week, the Red Dragons were desperate for a victory in the Championship and Kieffer Moore delivered it for the Welsh club with an outstanding hat-trick.

  • Wrexham stage brilliant comeback win

Wrexham registered only their second win in their last six outings across all competitions as they came from behind to beat Coventry City 3-2 in the Championship on Friday. Ephron Mason-Clark broke the deadlock for the league leaders in the 25th minute, before Moore equalised for the hosts at the hour mark. The English forward subsequently put the Red Dragons in front with a second goal nine minutes later, before completing his hat-trick in the 83rd minute. Tatsuhiro Sakamoto pulled one back for the Sky Blues, but ultimately Phil Parkinson's side walked away with crucial three points.

The win came after the club's disappointing exit from the Carabao Cup during midweek as they went down against League One Side Cardiff City. The final whistle at the Racecourse Ground was met with boos and jeers from frustrated supporters, with their anger compounded by another lifeless performance. However, the situation completely changed after the win over Frank Lampard's club as the home fans cheered loudly for the team throughout the 90 minutes.

'When Racecourse is rocking, anything is possible'

Thanking the club fans, Hollywood star and Wrexham co-owner Mac wrote on X: "Having spoken to Phil and a lot of the players, it’s abundantly clear that the support they received against Coventry made a massive difference. It’s hard to be that loud and positive, every game for 90+ min over an entire season. But I thought it worth mentioning that when the Racecourse is rocking, anything is possible. This is your team. We’re all invited and honored to be a part of it. Support them in whatever way brings you joy but know that for sure, you are making a difference in their success. Thank you!!!!"

  • Coventry's first loss of the 2025-26 season

Coventry City, under Lampard's tutelage, kicked off the 2025-26 campaign on a bright note as they went unbeaten in their first 12 matches and collected 28 points, their greatest ever start to a league campaign in history. They won eight out of their first 12 league matches and were flying high until they met Parkinson's Wrexham. Despite taking a lead with half an hour of the game, the Sky Blues conceded their first loss of the new season.

With the game against Wrexham falling on the evening of Halloween, Lampard was forced to skip his annual Halloween tradition — dressing up and trick-or-treating with his children around his London neighbourhood.

The 47-year-old took charge of the Sky Blues in November last year and guided them to a fifth-place finish. However, they were eliminated from the play-off after losing against Sunderland in the semi-final. This time around, though, the Chelsea legend is determined to progress to the top-flight.

Injured Nortje out of action, recovery timelines unknown

“Naturally we are worried. In Anrich’s case this is the second or third stress reaction in his back,” coach Shuki Conrad said

Anrich Nortje last played international cricket at the T20 World Cup in 2024•SA 20

South Africa fast bowler Anrich Nortje has suffered a “stress reaction” that will keep him out of action for an unknown period of time. Nortje was not considered for South Africa’s T20I squad to play a tri-series in Zimbabwe next month and did not travel to MLC 2025, where he was due to play for Los Angeles Knight Riders (LAKR). Nortje has only played two games this year, at the IPL for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).South Africa coach Shukri Conrad confirmed that Nortje’s injury will be assessed and as things stand, CSA is unaware of how long he will be out of action for.The injury is the latest in a long line of setbacks for Nortje, who is no longer centrally contracted with CSA and last played international cricket at the T20 World Cup in 2024. He was then not considered for the Test side for focusing primarily on T20s by opting out of the central contract. But a fractured toe then ruled him out of the home T20Is against Pakistan before a back injury sidelined him from the 2025 Champions Trophy. He then flew to India for the IPL to join KKR but played only two games for them.Related

Nortje injured again, Van der Dussen to lead newish-looking South Africa T20I side

Nortje has spent significant time on the sidelines in the past. He did not play any cricket between November 2013 and November 2015, November 2018 and February 2019 and then between November 2021 and April 2022 with a range of injuries relating to his back and hip.It is not known yet which formats Nortje will avail himself for when he returns to fitness.”We will have to see the length of the time that he will be out and the extent of the injury. I really feel for him,” Conrad said. “He is a superstar fast bowler and having to deal with setback after setback can’t be easy. We will wait to see how serious it is.”Naturally we are worried. In Anrich’s case this is the second or third stress reaction in his back. It is too early to make a diagnosis and we are definitely not drawing a line through this name. He is 31 years old and we are going to give him every chance to come back. We will have to see what the medical team think is the best way forward.”

Their own Isak: Aston Villa target £15m “poor man's Haaland” after Sancho

Aston Villa have all but secured the late loan signing of Jadon Sancho from Manchester United. Fabrizio Romano has given the move his famous “here we go” tag, which has essentially confirmed that a deal has been struck.

Without doubt, Villa require attacking reinforcements, given they are yet to score in any of their three games this season. Sancho is not the only forward who could switch to Villa Park on deadline day.

Aston Villa plot next move after Sancho

Aside from making a late move for Sancho, it has been reported by The Mail’s Simon Jones (09:21) that Unai Emery’s side are one of the clubs ‘showing late interest’ in signing Newcastle United striker William Osula.

Transfer Focus

With Villa ‘scouring the market for forward options’ before the window slams shut at 7pm today, as per Jones, Osula is one of the latest names to crop up.

The price is not yet clear, but he cost the Magpies £15m last summer, so they would surely want to make that money back, at least.

Why Osula would be a good signing

There is no doubt that Osula is far from the finished article. At just 22 years of age and with minimal Premier League experience under his belt, he is someone who Emery can help develop as a striker over the next few years.

The Denmark under-21 international has experience in the EFL and Premier League. Overall, he has 38 top-flight games under his belt, finding the back of the net twice, both for Newcastle, with one coming this season against Liverpool.

However, he has only played 1013 minutes, the equivalent of just 11 full 90 minutes.

The 22-year-old shone for Denmark at the under-21 European Championships this summer. His record was impressive, with three goals and two assists in just four games.

In that time, he averaged 1.5 key passes per game. That is the sort of quality Villa could be signing.

It is easy to see how Osula could become Villa’s own Alexander Isak. Of course, the Newcastle connection is there, with both strikers also hailing from Scandinavia.

The 22-year-old is, of course, a Dane, and Isak was born just outside of Stockholm.

Newcastle striker Alexander Isak

However, they both have similar builds, too. Osula is a tall striker standing at six feet and four inches, the same height as Isak. Both use their lanky frames to match defenders physically, and their long stride and powerful running style help them get a yard on opponents in a foot race.

That tall frame and big physicality are perhaps why Osula has been compared to Manchester City striker Erling Haaland in the past. His former teammate Curtis Davies once described him as a “poor man’s Haaland”, and with his build, it is easy to see why.

If the Dane can have the same impact at Villa Park that Isak had at St James’ Park, he will be a huge success.

The Liverpool-bound star bagged 62 goals and assisted 11 in 109 games for Eddie Howe’s side.

This could be a bargain for Villa. Osual is far from being the finished article, but with his profile and build, he has all the tools to make it as a successful striker in the Premier League. With some guidance from Emery, the Villans could have an exciting prospect on their hands.

The Rondo: Did Mauricio Pochettino get the USMNT squad right, was Weston McKennie deserving of a call-up and who is missing?

GOAL US writers break down the USMNT squad that will face Ecuador and Australia in a pair of October friendlies

Let's debate. The USMNT have a roster now. They have friendlies to play. And the squad for the October matches is interesting, even verging on full strength. This is what we all wanted. Can't we just be happy?

Pochettino has selected a roster that seems to be closer to what we can expect for next year's World Cup. There are some selections here that are perhaps a little forgiving. Weston McKennie is back in the fold, even if he's been frozen out at time with Juventus. Antonee Robinson has been named despite not being quite fully fit. There were also several notable omissions.

Those decisions, Pochettino reminded reporters, were his, and the asked-for explanations, in truth, didn't matter. What matters now is getting the 26-player group together and going from there.

"That is a different question: what we expect,” Pochettino said after the roster was announced on Thursday. “If players not in the squad call us and say, 'What do you expect from us coach?' that is a different question. I can speak for over an hour, two hours, and we can have videos and everything. But that's different from 'Why am I not here?' That is a different question."

But maybe it's fine to just be grateful that Christian Pulisic is in the form of his life for AC Milan and the U.S.might actually win a couple games as they continue World Cup preparations.

GOAL US writers discuss the USMNT roster choices in the latest edition of… The Rondo.

Getty Images SportDid Pochettino get this USMNT roster right?

Tom Hindle: It's not perfect, but it's close. Sure, you've got a few injuries to work with, but aside from one of two odd inclusions, there are few reasons to be critical. McKennie seems like a weird call, especially given his rough start with Juve. It's also hard to see a USMNT future for Max Arfsten that isn't "never seeing the field." But this is what friendlies are for, and even if he's brought in the big guns, one or two experiments are (just about) forgivable. Also, perfect rosters are boring and leaves us with nothing to talk about.

Ryan Tolmich: As close to right as he possibly can, given the circumstances. It would be nice to have Tyler Adams, Sergino Dest and Ricardo Pepi in, of course, but they have to miss out due to external circumstances. Are there omissions worth arguing about? Sure, but by and large, this roster is just about as close to full strength as it could be, which shows that Pochettino is really zeroing in on ahead of the World Cup.

Alex Labidou: Yes. There weren’t many surprises on this squad, as it is a good mix of players who have established themselves in Europe and MLS standouts who stepped up during the team’s Gold Cup run. Now the exciting part will be to see how the well-established guard and the emerging talent all blend.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportWho's the biggest omission?

TH: Yunus Musah. He's a real contender to start at the World Cup, and it's odd to not see him here – especially given he was solid in Poch's early days as manager. Something isn't adding up. A word, too, for Joe Scally, who would seem to add depth at both a right back and right center back in a back three. Then again, Pochettino is the manager, and not this guy with a laptop.

RT: Scally, largely because of what it means. Musah was left out because there were other options in midfield, sure. Scally was looked over on a roster that carried just one natural right-back. That indicates that Pochettino doesn't see Scally as the type of player that fits in his team, even if the Gladbach star is fresh off a good attacking performance last week. It might not be enough, as Scally is very clearly the third right-back on the depth chart right now, and it's a distant third at that. This omission confirms it.

AL: Wouldn’t say it was unexpected, but you do have to feel sympathy for both Scally, who is one of the best right backs in the Bundesliga, and Zack Steffen, who has been in and out of camps due to injury. Scally’s style of play appears not to mesh with  Pochettino’s style. Steffen – who was impressive in his one outing for Pochettino – appears to have fallen down the pecking order after injuries have held him back. For a player who told GOAL he was devastated by being left out of the 2022 World Cup and had something to prove this cycle, his window appears to be closing.

Getty ImagesWho's the biggest surprise addition?

TH: McKennie. He's not been anywhere near good enough to be included. If form matters – it should, sort of – his presence here is puzzling. You can also make a thinly-veiled argument that Malik Tillman hasn't been good enough, but anyone would want to get the hell away from that Bayer Leverkusen team at the moment.

RT: Robinson, but not because he's not good enough. We all know he is a locked-in starter, so no worries there. The thing is that Poch has largely been careful with injured players, preferring to leave them with their clubs to build towards returns. Robinson, meanwhile, has played 90 minutes just once this season, and it came in a cup game against lower-league opposition. Pochettino says the USMNT and Fulham are on the same page, and Robinson is surely close to full fitness. But it shows just how important the staff feels it is to have Robinson in. Given his current status, they wouldn't have called him in otherwise.

AL: Aidan Morris. His inclusion makes sense because of his impressive form in the Championship, but he has been out of Poch’s plans for so long, it felt seemed as ifwas in the same boat as Scally – a talented player who doesn’t fit the Argentine’s style. It will be intriguing to see if he actually gets playing time in the two October friendlies.

Getty Images SportWhat formation should the USMNT deploy?

TH: Something three-at-the-back adjacent. The center back selections here suggests that Poch rates that set up, but it's important to remember that versatility is everything. Tim Ream is a centerback who can play on the left. McKennie can play a variety of positions. No team plays 3-4-2-1 on both sides of the ball. It's about having the guys who know how – and when – to switch it up. As long as Balogun is your nine, and Pulisic gets on the ball near the goal, things should be alright.

RT: Back three until the World Cup, please! This group, in particular, is seemingly designed for it with Mark McKenzie and Miles Robinson, two defenders who play in this system on the club level, back in the fold. Give the fullbacks  – or Tim Weah – room to roam, find two midfielders that can help Adams when he returns and let Pulisic cook alongside Folarin Balogun and Tillman. It all makes sense, particularly after what we saw against Japan in last month's USMNT win.

AL: Pochettino won’t do it, but he should strongly consider mirroring what Max Allegri has done with Milan. Pulisic is in the form of his life, and you want to utilize tactics that bring out the best in him. Allegri uses a 5-3-2 and, if Pochettino were to do the same, it would look like this: Matt Freese, Robinson, Chris Richards, Ream, McKenzie, Weah, McKennie, Tanner Tessmann (filling in for Adams), Tillman, Pulisic and Balogun.

Labuschagne to reset after leanest run-scoring summer

Marnus Labuschagne will rest, then head to English county cricket in a bid to rediscover peak form after his leanest run-scoring summer.Labuschagne will have another stint with Glamorgan before Australia’s World Test Championship final against South Africa in June. In Test cricket in 2024-25, Labuschagne averaged 25.63 – his lowest return since his 2018 Test debut – and didn’t score a century.Related

Labuschagne fell for a leg-side trap for a first-innings duck, caught when flicking to leg gully. In the second, he was well-settled on 61 before being caught at deep square leg from a half-hearted swipe at a short ball.”That dismissal, if I am playing my best I am not making those errors,” he said.In the home Test series against India, Labuschagne played important knocks of 70 and 72 in Melbourne’s Boxing Day Test. But his other scores against the Indians were meagre – 12, 1, 2 and 6. In the two-Test away series in Sri Lanka he made 20, 4 and 26 not out.

Some pundits believe those returns could threaten Labuschagne’s Test spot, given the looming return from injury of Cameron Green, the emergence of SA’s triumphant Shield captain Nathan McSweeney, Josh Inglis’ century on Test debut and the rise of opener Sam Konstas. But Labuschagne said his summer wasn’t all doom and gloom.”There’s a lot to like about how I played and how I went about it,” he said. “But just to get back to my best where I’m scoring hundreds, I am one of those players that just want to continue to grow and learn and keep finding that form.”

Newcastle eyeing fresh transfer race with Man City to sign "superb" rival

With less than 10 days until the transfer window closes, Newcastle United are now reportedly eyeing a deal to sign a Premier League rival alongside Manchester City.

Latest on Newcastle's striker search

Whilst it seemed as though things were finally looking up for Newcastle when a deal was back on the table for Yoane Wissa and Malick Thiaw arrived, they now look destined to suffer a cruel transfer twist yet again. Reports are now suggesting that, despite Brentford’s initial decision to ease their stance, the Bees are now demanding in excess of £60m to sell their forward, who is back training with the squad.

As things stand, the closest that Newcastle have come to meeting Brentford’s demands is an offer worth £40m. Whether that changes before the transfer window slams shut remains the big question, but the forward is no longer the only name on the Magpies’ shortlist.

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Jorgen Strand Larsen has also entered Newcastle’s radar, according to recent reports. The towering Norway international enjoyed an excellent debut campaign in the Premier League last time out and would undoubtedly be an ideal alternative to Wissa this month.

Like Brentford, however, Wolves are in no mood to hand Newcastle a cut-price in the remaining days of the window – reportedly demanding over £60m to sell their star striker.

Just where Newcastle take their striker search next remains to be seen in a summer full of twists, especially with recent rumours indicating that their next signing may even be a Premier League defender instead.

Newcastle eyeing Acheampong alongside Man City

According to Caught Offside, Newcastle are now eyeing a deal to sign Josh Acheampong from Chelsea in a fresh transfer race against Manchester City. The 19-year-old started Chelsea’s opening day draw against Crystal Palace, keeping a clean sheet in what was a solid performance despite the Blues’ shortcomings going in the other direction.

New Chris Wood: Newcastle agree personal terms to sign big-money striker

ByWill Miller Aug 22, 2025

Now on Newcastle’s radar, the teenager would offer Eddie Howe instant versatility thanks to his ability to play as both a right-back and a centre-back. Whether the Magpies can convince Chelsea to sell their young star is another question entirely, however. As things stand, despite interest from City and Newcastle, those at Stamford Bridge have stood firm on their stance that Acheampong is not for sale.

Described as a “superb defender in the making” by scout Jacek Kulig, Acheampong is certainly one to watch no matter where he plays his football this season and beyond.

The injury struck just minutes after he came on as a substitute, with the playmaker needing to be stretchered off. Maddison will now undergo surgery and rehabilitation, dealing an almighty blow to Frank’s chances of a winning start to his tenure.

The Dane described Maddison’s absence as “devastating,” lamenting the loss not just for the team, but for the player personally.

“I think it’s disappointing but also devastating for me and mainly for Madders that he’s out of the team,” said Frank, speaking after Thursday evening’s friendly defeat to Bayern. “We will miss him and no doubt he will miss playing football.”

His absence leaves a notable creative void, with Spurs already thin in that area. Frank’s side were already working to sign an attacking midfielder before Maddison’s return to the sidelines (Fabrizio Romano), but those plans must now intensify with Tottenham minus one of their chief forward outlets.

The Lilywhites had booked a medical for Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White last month (BBC), only for his club to block the £60 million move and tie him down with a brand-new contract – forcing Spurs back to square one in their search for a number 10.

A host of intriguing targets have been linked in the last few days alone, including Man City’s Jack Grealish, AC Milan’s Rafael Leao, Como starlet Nico Paz, Liverpool forward Harvey Elliott and Savinho.

All the aforementioned men can be used as playmakers when required, as can Barça forward Ferran Torres.

Frank could use Torres as a replacement for Son and Maddison, theoretically, but it appears Spurs are set to be snubbed in their attempts to sign the ex-City sensation.

According to reports in Spain, Tottenham made a £43 million bid for Torres recently. However, the cash-strapped Catalans have still decided not to sell, especially considering his new lease of life towards the second half of 2024/2025.

FC Barcelona'sFerranTorresin action

Torres scored 19 goals and bagged a further seven assists last season, and would’ve been a fantastic asset for Frank, but it appears the north Londoners will have to continue their search for attackers elsewhere.

“He’s a player on another level, he’s spectacular: how he understands the space, links play, doesn’t lose the ball, his defensive work… he’s world-class,” said ex-Barca boss, Xavi.

“He’s a great signing, one I wanted, and a wonderful footballer.”

Bartlett suffers side strain, Dwarshuis called in as cover for ODIs

Australia are facing the prospect of losing another pace bowler from their UK tour after Xavier Bartlett pulled up with a side strain in the first T20I against England in Southampton. He had overcome a no-ball from his first delivery, which saw Phil Salt taken at mid-off by captain Mitchell Marsh who had not heard the call and started to celebrate, to claim the wicket of Jordan Cox later in the powerplay. In a rare sight of a quick operating unchanged in a T20, Bartlett was given his four overs off the reel by Marsh as he extracted swing on a cold night but aborted his attempt to complete his last two deliveries. If, as seems likely, Bartlett’s tour is over it would add to the loss of Spencer Johnson (side) and Nathan Ellis (hamstring) from the trip. Dwarshuis is uncapped in ODIs but has played three T20Is.Bartlett had not been due to be part of the ODI leg despite bursting onto the scene with consecutive four-wicket hauls against West Indies earlier this year. A side injury would likely put him in doubt for the start of the domestic season with Queensland with the Marsh Cup beginning later this month before the Sheffield Shield starts in early October.Hazlewood made an impressive return to action in Southampton with 2 for 32 from his four overs which included the key wicket of Liam Livingstone who had threatened to bring England back into the contest. He and Mitchell Starc will be part of the one-day series but Pat Cummins is missing the whole tour to work on strength and condition ahead of the home summer.

ByDominic Lund Jul 7, 2025 "World-class" Luiz could be coup for West Ham

The maestro may have struggled to make an impact at Juventus, but he certainly left a lasting impression during his previous stint in the Premier League, being lauded as “world-class” by former teammate John McGinn.

As displayed by a fantastic assist for Ollie Watkins in the Conference League, the Brazil international is a threat on the front foot, while also proving himself to be a fantastic all-round midfielder with his performances in the 2023-24 campaign.

As such, Luiz could be a real coup for Potter, who will be looking to make a push for the European places next season, rather than flirting with relegation again.
