Mookie Betts Drops Mic After Shohei Ohtani's Historic Night: 'He's Michael Jordan'

Shohei Ohtani's greatness is unparalleled. His incredible three-homer, 10-strikeout night Friday has never been seen before and crosses boundaries into one of the most dominant performances ever, no matter the sport.

As the Dodgers completed the sweep on the Brewers in the National League Championship Series Friday, onlookers tried to grapple with the history they just witnessed. That includes star shortstop Mookie Betts, who had a legendary comparison for his teammate who continues to find new ways to amaze us all.

"I said it multiple times, we're like the Bulls and he's Michael Jordan," Betts said via MLB Network as the Dodgers celebrated their second World Series appearance in a row Friday. "Whenever he goes, we're all going to go. You saw it today and I'm just happy he's on our team."

Looping in Jordan, who led the Bulls to six NBA titles and was named Finals MVP in each championship, puts you up with the greatest of all time. While it's extremely high praise, it's warranted for Ohtani, who's dominance over the past few seasons already has him in GOAT conversations.

His leadoff home run Friday in L.A.'s 5-1 win traveled 446 feet and made him the first pitcher to hit a leadoff homer in MLB history. If that wasn't enough, his second home run of the night went even further, traveling 469 feet up and out of Dodger Stadium. Even his teammates couldn't believe it. He sent one more ball over the fence—this one went to center field—and by the end of the night, Ohtani was the first player to ever hit three homers and throw 10 strikeouts in the same game.

Just take it all in:

We're witnessing greatness and everyone knows it. Ohtani has some time before he can meet or even top Jordan's six championships, but his massive performance moved the Dodgers just four wins away from back-to-back World Series wins.

World Cup No.7 & more history for Cristiano Ronaldo? Stunning prediction from ex-Portugal team-mate as evergreen GOAT considers ‘goodbye at home’

Cristiano Ronaldo is being backed to grace a seventh World Cup, with FIFA’s flagship event heading to Portugal – as one of several co-hosts – in 2030. If the all-time great were to make that event, then more history would be made. Nuno Gomes can see that prospect appealing to CR7, with a contract extension having already been signed at club level with Al-Nassr.

Evergreen Ronaldo: CR7 still going strong at the age of 40

Those terms are only through to 2027, with it yet to be determined what Ronaldo will do beyond that point. He has starred in the Saudi Pro League, with remarkable individual standards being maintained at 40 years of age.

He continues to make himself available at international level, with 226 caps being earned while scoring 143 goals. Ronaldo continues to chase down 1,000 career strikes – with the record books being rewritten.

Ronaldo has stated that next summer’s World Cup will be his last, but anything is considered possible where the former Manchester United and Real Madrid superstar is concerned. He has kept himself in the best possible shape and made no secret of the fact that he wants to continue for as long as possible.

AdvertisementGettyHome World Cup: Ronaldo backed to make 2030 finals

Portugal will stage games at the 2030 World Cup alongside Spain and Morocco – with group stage matches also heading to Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay. On Ronaldo bowing out on home soil, former team-mate Nuno Gomes told : “It's a difficult question. I think only him, or maybe not even him, knows the answer because I think he is doing year by year at this age.

“I think he's still fit to play. He's a really professional player and one of the players that we can point him as an example to follow? For the young generations. But of course he has his age and his capacity is reduced in some qualities, in speed for example. He's not the same Cristiano when he was 18 or 20, but he's still capable to score goals, and in football, it's the most important thing, to score goals and he's still scoring.

“Of course I think it also depends on the coach. Right now we have Roberto Martinez and I think he adapts the team, having him in the first 11 or not. So I think it will depend on his will, to play more or not. But probably I could tell that it could be his last World Cup. Even though we know that in four years we are hosting some games. And maybe it could be an opportunity to say goodbye at home.”

Euro 2028 and beyond: When will Ronaldo retire?

Ronaldo’s former United colleague Wes Brown told GOAL recently when asked if CR7 will play on to Euro 2028: “If he can bring something to the squad, why not pick him? Does that mean he has to play every game? Look at the last competition, everyone was saying he shouldn’t play but he did ok. He knows the press are going to give him stick anyway as soon as he doesn’t score or give an assist. At the same time, he is still there for his younger team-mates and wants them to do well.

“In his mind he won’t be finished yet and he can still contribute to the team. I don’t think he will retire from international football until he has retired completely. He’s still got the energy, that same belief, and can still do it. There are not many people that can say that at that level.”

GettyAnother record for Ronaldo? Oldest player to grace a World Cup

If Ronaldo were to play towards another major tournament beyond the next European Championship, then he would head into his mid-40s. He will be 41 when representing his country at next summer’s event in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The oldest player to make an appearance at the World Cup finals is ex-Egypt goalkeeper Essam El Hadary, who faced Saudi Arabia in 2018 aged 45 years and 161 days. Ronaldo would be 45 years and 166 days old by the time the 2030 competition comes to a close.

'Shellshocked' Stokes hails Head for 'knocking the wind' out of England

England captain says England will lick their wounds and try to come back stronger at Brisbane

Ben Stokes, England’s captain, admitted he and his team had been left “shellshocked” by Travis Head’s stunning 69-ball century, as Australia transcended the chaos of the first three innings of the first Ashes Test at Perth to romp to victory by eight wickets and with three whole days to spare.Head left the field to a standing ovation after his stunning knock of 123 from 83 balls had ripped the momentum away from an England team that seemed to have the contest in their grasp when they went to the second-day lunch break on 65 for 1, with a lead of 99 and nine wickets in hand. But a calamitous collapse of 4 for 11 in 19 balls, initiated by a fine spell from Scott Boland, turned the contest back in Australia’s favour. Though England’s lower-order rallied to set the hosts 205 for victory – the highest innings total of the game – Head’s promotion to the top of the order, in the absence of the injured Usman Khawaja, proved a blessing in disguise as he came out swinging, to blaze Australia to their target in a mere 28.2 overs. It was an example of England being comprehensively beaten at their own hard-hitting game, and Stokes was in awe of Australia’s matchwinner at the post-match presentations.”We’re a little bit shellshocked there,” Stokes told the host broadcaster. “That innings from Travis Head was pretty phenomenal. It’s quite raw, quite fresh at the moment but, geez, that was some knock. It’s knocked the wind out of us.”Asked if he regretted England’s approach to their own second innings – in particular a trio of big shots from Ollie Pope, Harry Brook and Joe Root in the midst of that post-lunch collapse – Stokes insisted that England’s approach had not been the wrong one, as Head’s own success demonstrated, but their execution had been lacking.”If you look at the way the game eked out, the guys who seemed to have success out there with bat in hand were the guys who were really brave and took the game on,” Stokes said. “Anyone who tried to stay around there and try and occupy the crease didn’t really seem to have too much success.Related

“On wickets like this, you never think you’ve got enough, so if you find yourself in a position where you’re the guy who’s managed to get in, try and give yourself the best chance of going on. There was a lot of assistance there when the bowlers put the ball in the right areas. The guys who were brave enough to knock the bowlers off their lengths seem to find success on that.”Ultimately, however, England were blown away by Head’s extraordinary onslaught. Asked what more he could have done to contain such an aggressive innings, Stokes said: “We tried three or four different plans at him. When he was going like a train, those plans can change quite quickly, because those runs were coming down quickly.”I’ve seen Travis play a lot of knocks like that, whether it be in Test cricket or white-ball cricket. He’s very hard to stop.”Because of the two-day finish, England now have close to a fortnight to prepare for the day-night Test in Brisbane, beginning on December 4. Stokes admitted that his team would have to lick their wounds after such a bruising defeat, but said that the performance of his five-man pace attack in the first innings was proof that there will be some positives to take into the rest of the series.”The way in which we bowled yesterday was simply phenomenal,” Stokes said. “A lot happened on day one, 19 wickets fell, so it was a good day for the bowlers.”This is a very tough one to get the series going when we felt we were in control of the game, and we were coming out there to bowl in that fourth innings. We’ve got four more games here.”We’ll obviously let this sink in. Obviously it hurts extremely, but we got to get our heads round and move on to Brisbane, and then hit the ground running there.”

Enzo Fernandez stakes claim to be Lionel Messi’s successor as Chelsea & Argentina star sets captaincy target that would see him take armband from all-time great

Enzo Fernandez is staking a claim to be Lionel Messi’s successor with the Argentina national team. The Chelsea midfielder is not looking to become the Albiceleste’s next iconic No.10, but admits that he would welcome the opportunity to inherit captaincy duties from his iconic countryman. That position will soon be up for grabs, with Messi building towards what would be his last World Cup.

Messi's Argentina record: International caps and goals

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner is yet to confirm that he will form part of Argentina’s global title defence in the United States, Canada and Mexico next summer – having already taken in a final international outing on home soil – but the expectation is that he will.

Messi will skipper his country at another major tournament, having previously led them to two Copa America crowns and World Cup glory at Qatar 2022. He has earned 196 caps and scored 115 goals.

AdvertisementGettyNext skipper: Who will take the armband from Messi?

The day will come when Messi walks away, with somebody else needing to step up and lead by example in his absence. Fernandez, who has filled the armband at Chelsea on occasions, believes that he is ready to take on that responsibility.

The combative 24-year-old told of his personal ambition: “On a personal level, of course, I dream of captaining Argentina, but that decision doesn’t come down to me. It’s up to the coaching staff. Of course, I dream of being the Argentina captain.

“I don’t know when it might be. Time will tell, and it’s up to the coaching staff to make the decision. It’s certainly one of my dreams, and I’d be honoured to wear the captain’s armband.”

Back-to-back: Argentina ready for World Cup title defence

Fernandez starred alongside Messi as Argentina savoured World Cup glory in 2022, with best young player of the tournament honours coming his way at 20 years of age. He is ready to go back-to-back in the World Cup-winning stakes.

The Chelsea midfielder added: “We’ll try to defend it and win it again, which is what this national team must do. The Argentine people are so passionate and we always want more. Our mentality is that we deserve to defend our World Cup crown and have a great tournament, which means winning it.”

A second World Cup success would help to cement Messi’s legacy as the greatest of all-time, with Fernandez and Co aware that they are witnessing the end of a truly remarkable career. They are determined to deliver one more wild celebration.

Fernandez said: “Winning the World Cup is in the past now, and we are focused on what lies ahead. We know it could be Messi’s last World Cup, so we’ll aim to defend our crown from Qatar as a team. We’ll do our best to retain it.”

GettyWill Messi play for Argentina at the 2026 World Cup?

Messi has told of representing Argentina next summer, with the evergreen 38-year-old concerned that he may not be in the best possible shape while plying his club trade in MLS for Inter Miami: “I don't want to be a burden, so to speak. I want to feel physically fit, to be sure I can help and contribute to the team. Our season is different from the European one. We'll have a pre-season in between, with few matches leading up to the World Cup, and we'll see how things go day by day to see if I really feel physically fit enough to be where I'd like to be and be able to participate.

“But obviously, I'm aware that it's a World Cup, and it's special, and that the World Cup is the biggest competition there is. So, I'm excited, but I'm taking it one day at a time.”

Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni has left the door open for Messi to play on for as long as he wants, with the iconic No.10 never going to be forced into international retirement. He has shown with Inter Miami in 2025, having helped them to a historic MLS Cup final appearance, that he has lost none of his match-altering magic.

Manager who called Swansea City fans "fantastic" open to replacing Sheehan

One manager who has previously hailed Swansea City supporters is open to the idea of replacing Alan Sheehan in south Wales.

Swansea City managerial latest

The search for a new permanent Swans manager is underway after parting ways with Sheehan on Tuesday following a poor start to the Championship campaign.

A club statement on Tuesday read: “In the wake of a disappointing run, it is felt results and performances do not meet the standards expected at this stage of the season, and we have had to take this difficult decision.

“The process to appoint a new head coach is already under way. We will update supporters on this process once it has been concluded.”

CEO Tom Gorringe and head of recruitment Adam Worth are leading the search for Sheehan’s successor, with Hammarby manager Kim Hellberg the favourite to come in during the international break.

Talks have been held with the 37-year-old who at this stage appears to be one of the frontrunners after initial discussions.

Swedish coach Hellberg isn’t the only name, though, with former managers Russell Martin and Brendan Rodgers out of work at this moment in time, as well as former Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick.

Russell Martin open to Swansea City return

According to the BBC, Martin is open to the idea of returning to Swansea, more than two years on after leaving for Southampton.

The outlet states that Martin ‘remains a popular figure among players and staff at Swansea’, however, a move back to south Wales for the available manager ‘is unlikely’ despite still having ‘many admirers within the club’.

The Swansea owners are the ones who are seemingly against a return for Martin, who was sacked from Rangers earlier this season following a disastrous short tenure at Ibrox.

The 39-year-old did take Southampton to the Premier League in his first season in charge before being sacked in the top flight by the Saints. Martin has actually taken charge of more games for Swansea than any other club in his managerial career and clearly has a soft spot for Jacks supporters.

Amorim must boldly bench Amad & start "underrated" Man Utd star instead

Manchester United will travel to Anfield on Sunday afternoon, chasing their first win away to the Reds since 2015/16.

If Ruben Amorim’s side are victorious, it will also be the first time they’ve won back-to-back Premier League games under the Portuguese manager.

Last season’s result at Anfield was one of their best there in years. United came away with a 2-2 draw, thanks to goals from Lisandro Martinez and Amad, who scored an 80th-minute equaliser. That was the first time the Red Devils had scored at Anfield since 2018/19.

Amorim spoke about Martinez’s availability in his pre-match press conference, along with other team news.

Man Utd’s team news for Liverpool trip

The number of injuries in the United squad is decreasing as the season progresses, which is important for Amorim. Martinez has been sidelined since February, although the trip to Anfield has seemingly come too soon for the 2022 World Cup winner.

The United boss confirmed that the 27-year-old is not too far off a return to full training, having been back on grass for a few weeks.

Martinez is “almost returning to the training with the team,” said Amorim.

Noussair Mazraoui is another player who United have been without for a few weeks. Amorim clarified that he is unsure of his availability for the trip to Anfield, with the Red Devils gaffer saying, “I don’t know” when quizzed on whether he will feature against United.

Although he wasn’t mentioned in the press conference, Ayden Heaven did pick up a knock on England under-20s duty. However, an article from The Manchester Evening News said United have ‘played down’ any potential issue with the talented centre-back.

As for the other players involved with their national teams this week, Amorim confirmed “they are ready” to play on Sunday. He certainly has a few different options when it comes to the makeup of his starting lineup, with a few selection headaches at wing-back.

Amorim’s secret weapon at wing-back

It has not been easy for Amoirm to land on the right formula at wing-back throughout his stint as United boss.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Patrick Dorgu has tended to be the option on the left flank.

On the right, Mazraoui has played that role well, but it is not a guarantee that he will be involved against the Reds.

That leaves two options for Amorim to go with. Amad is one of those, although he may well choose to go with the more defensive option of Diogo Dalot.

The Portuguese right-back has shown great versatility under his countryman, but right wing-back is surely where he slots in best.

The 26-year-old, who was born in Braga, has played on both flanks for United this season. However, across his six appearances, he’s played four times on the right-hand side, starting there against Arsenal on the first day of the season.

It is for his more defensive approach that he could be a better option than Amad from the start. Dalot would be coming directly up against Cody Gakpo, who is in stellar form this season.

The Dutchman has two goals and two assists in seven Premier League games so far.

United’s number two is a right-back by trade, and certainly offers a lot from a defensive point of view. Compared to Amad this season, he’s won more tackles in the defensive third per game, with 1.08 as opposed to the Ivorian’s 0.2.

Yet, as the numbers in the table show, Dalot does offer a threat going forward, meaning it is not just a defensive-minded selection from the Red Devils boss.

However, he certainly has the defensive nous to lock down Gakpo, one of Liverpool’s biggest attacking threats.

As Statman Dave has said, the United defender is an “underrated” member of the squad.

His ability from a defensive point of view could be key against a threat like Gakpo, as United go on the hunt for a rare win at Anfield.

'We have to invest' – Man Utd chief opens up on transfer plans but sends 'right players' warning ahead of January window

Manchester United director of football Jason Wilcox has spoken about the club's continued need to invest in new players ahead of the January transfer window, as they seek to drive standards on and off the pitch following three successive Premier League wins. Approaching one year since Ruben Amorim was appointed as head coach, the Red Devils have taken strides in the right direction but Wilcox reiterated that there is still a way to go.

Investment and improvement major targets for Man Utd

In a recent interview published on the club website, United chief Wilcox expressed some of the biggest aims for himself, head coach Ruben Amorim and those inside the club as the Red Devils seek to take their recent improvement to another level. He cited Premier League and Champions League titles as long-term goals which suggest the 20-time top-flight champions retain the ambitions to reattain their former glory.

In the short-term investment is key, said Wilcox, but he stressed that the club must bring in the right players who can contribute to higher standards and push the club in the right direction with the right character and mentality required for a high-pressure environment like Old Trafford.

AdvertisementAFPUnited must bring in the right players to drive turnaround

Wilcox said: “We have got a clear plan. We know what we have got to do, we know the areas of the team that we have got to improve. For us to get in the top four and consistently challenge for Champions League places, win Champions Leagues, win Premier Leagues, we have got to invest in the squad. We have got to buy the right players. The right players who are talented but also who can deal with the pressure, who can take the squad forward.

“It is not always about just signing elite talent, they have got to have the right character and be somebody who can bring something different to the team.

“We are really happy with where we are, we know we have got to improve and, you know, the players, they will never be satisfied, Ruben [Amorim] will never be happy, I will never be happy, it is just how we are built. We are always looking to improve. Anybody who works at Manchester United should be thinking the same and they do, with the standards we are driving every day.”

Wilcox praises impact of new signings on Amorim's side

“The guys have settled in really, really quickly," continued Wilcox. "I think especially when you look at Matheus [Cunha] and Bryan [Mbeumo], they have played in the Premier League and they have lived in England, so there is a quicker transition. I think for Benji [Benjamin Sesko] and Senne [Lammens], you look at their transition and they have transitioned really well. We are really pleased. They are two young players, two for the future, but they have settled in amazingly well.

“They are all good guys, even from last summer's window, they are top professionals, top players and we are really optimistic we are going in the right direction. We have a clear plan. I am sure there are going to be bumps in the road, but we have just got to make sure we stay calm irrespective of the noise outside.”

AFPNottingham Forest up next as United seek four on the spin

United must not let their foot off the gas in the coming weeks if they are to convince the world that they have truly turned things around.

A tricky visit to Nottingham Forest on Saturday for Sean Dyche’s first home Premier League match as boss will indicate a little better where the Red Devils are, as many recent United sides may have crumbled under the pressure exerted by an opponent with a point to prove.

“We have just got to keep this going now,” said Wilcox. “Not get too carried away when we win and not get too disappointed when we lose. We know we are making progress. It will be another tough game at the weekend. Ruben and the guys will be fully prepared, we know what we are going to get at Nottingham Forest, a new manager, they have got a good playing squad, we saw that last year, and it is going to be a really difficult game for us.”

Crisis at the City Ground: How Nottingham Forest went from top-four fight to potentially needing relegation firefighter Sean Dyche to replace Ange Postecoglou

Nottingham Forest's surge towards the Premier League's top four was the most inspiring story of the 2024-25 campaign, and though a late collapse ultimately led to Nuno Espirito Santo's side finishing seventh, it was still the club's best top-flight performance in 30 years. The party mood at the City Ground was reignited three months later too, as Forest were promoted from the Conference League to the Europa League after Crystal Palace were controversially punished for breaching UEFA's multi-club ownership rules.

Meanwhile, Forest made 13 new signings in the summer transfer window to prepare for their first European campaign since 1996-97, including Bologna winger Dan Ndoye, Ipswich Town wonderkid Omari Hutchinson, and Brazilian sharpshooter Igor Jesus. From the outside, it looked like one of English football's great fallen giants was finally on a path back to the top.

But fast-forward to mid-October, and all those fans who dared to dream are now seeing their worst nightmares come to fruition. Forest have slipped to 17th in the table after winning just one of their first seven Premier League matches this term, and are the joint-lowest scorers in the division with only five goals.

They were also dumped out of the Carabao Cup in the third round by Championship side Swansea City, before beginning their Europa League journey with a 2-2 draw at Real Betis and a hugely disappointing 3-2 defeat at home to FC Midtjylland. Beloved coach Nuno was sensationally sacked just three games into the new season and swiftly replaced by polarising chaos facilitator Ange Postecoglou, who has steered a swaying ship straight into shark-infested waters.

A humiliating return to the Championship is a distinct possibility if something doesn't change . The question is: how on earth did Forest go from being genuine Champions League contenders to relegation fodder in such a short space of time?

Getty Images SportUCL spot goes begging

When Forest beat Manchester United 1-0 at the City Ground on April 1, courtesy of an early goal from ex-Red Devils winger Anthony Elanga, they were sat third in the Premier League on 57 points, only four behind second-placed Arsenal and 10 clear of Newcastle, who were just outside the Champions League spots in sixth. With only eight games remaining, Forest's destiny was in their own hands.

But then they completely ran out of steam. Nuno's men only won two of their next seven, with three defeats suffered against Aston Villa, Everton and Brentford, which saw them plummet to seventh. And yet still, they went into the final day knowing that a home win over fourth-placed Chelsea would secure passage to the Champions League.

Unfortunately, they blew their final chance, falling to a 1-0 loss against the Blues in a match desperately shot on quality. Forest put in plenty of effort, but were not inventive enough to break through Chelsea's rear-guard, mustering only two shots on target, with a close-range Lewis Cowill finish proving to be the difference between the two teams.

Considering that Forest had only just preserved their Premier League status on the final day of the 2023-24 campaign, seventh place was a massive achievement, and the City Ground faithful gave Nuno and his players the warm reception they deserved on their lap of honour. But the underlying reasons for their poor form down the finishing stretch were largely glossed over.

AdvertisementAFP'Success was never sustainable'

GOAL senior writer and die-hard Nottingham Forest supporter Chris Burton was one of the few who saw Forest's decline coming. "Success last season was never sustainable – Chris Wood’s xG, the clean sheets, and counter-attack style," he says. "The wheels started to fall off in the spring, and Forest never really recovered."

Indeed, Wood scored 20 of Forest's 58 Premier League goals last term – the best return of his entire career by far – from just 32 shots on target. The New Zealand international outperformed his expected goals (xG) total of 13.4 by 6.6, with Bryan Mbeumo the only man to beat that number at Brentford (7.7 difference from the same number of goals).

Forest also had more clean sheets than any other team in the league after their win over United (13), but failed to add to that tally in their final eight games, and Wood only scored twice in that period. The main reason for this was opponents cottoning onto Nuno's one-dimensional tactics.

Teams started to cede more possession to Forest instead of pushing them deep, so they were less susceptible to fast breaks. This meant that Forest had larger areas to defend with fewer numbers, and they couldn't get the ball up to Wood in dangerous positions as often. "Nuno stuck to his guns and was found out," Burton adds.

Getty/GOAL'War' with Edu

According to , Nuno wanted to adapt Forest's style over the summer to compete with the elite, but was hampered by a lack of urgency from the club's recruitment team. Forest invested £196 million ($23m) in new players, but several important deals were not closed until the end of the transfer window, and he expressed his frustration in front of the media.

"Dealing with doubts is the worst thing you can have in football," he said before Forest's opening game of the new season against Brentford. "Who is going to be [here], when are they [new signings] going to come? All these things create doubts. Our pre-season was very, very bad. We didn't win one game and scored one goal. The players are not supermen, we are going to need to rotate them. That's a major problem with the intensity and demands of the games."

One of Nuno's priority targets was Fulham winger Adama Traore, whom he worked with at Wolves, but the deal was reportedly blocked by Forest's new head of global football, Edu. claims that Nuno took a dislike to the former Arsenal sporting director from "their very first conversation". A full-blown internal "war" erupted, and the pair soon stopped speaking entirely.

But it was a battle that Nuno simply could not win, because Edu was a key part of the long-term project being pieced together by Forest's Greek owner Evangelos Marinakis.

GettyNuno sacking 'inevitable'

Edu and Marinakis both took Nuno's public complaints 'personally', and though he lifted the mood behind the scenes by delivering a 3-1 win against Brentford, it was only temporary. Nuno was still unhappy and invited Marinakis' wrath with another stunning outburst in his pre-match press conference ahead of Forest's trip to Crystal Palace.

"I have always had a very good relationship with the owner, last season was very, very close, almost on a daily basis. Our relationship has changed. It’s not so close," he admitted. "It’s not good, everyone at the club should be together, but it’s not the reality."

Nuno's comments brought back instant memories of when Marinakis appeared to confront his manager on the pitch after Forest's 2-2 draw with Leicester City back in May, which the club later clarified was because of the owner's concern for striker Taiwo Awoniyi, who had played despite picking up an abdominal injury that later required surgery. Any notion of a wider fallout was quashed at the time, and Nuno signed a new three-year contract the following month, but Marinakis started thinking about ripping up that agreement after seeing the manager air his grievances so brazenly. Forest battled to a 1-1 draw against Palace, but by that time, it was already being widely reported that Postecoglou was being lined up to replace Nuno.

A 3-0 defeat against West Ham at the City Ground on August 31 proved to be the final nail in the coffin for Nuno, who was dismissed during the subsequent international break. It was a shocking call considering his status as Forest's most successful manager of the modern era, but an "inevitable" one that fans understood, according to Burton. "Nuno threw his toys out of the pram when he didn't get the targets he wanted and lost some goodwill in the eyes of supporters with his behaviour," he says.
