Arsenal In Negotiations To Sign "Unique" Player For £8.5m

Arsenal are in ongoing negotiations regarding a summer deal to bring Gremio star Bitello to the Premier League, according to fresh reports.

Who is Bitello?

Bitello is primarily a central midfielder and academy graduate of Renato Gaucho’s side, having worked his way up through the various youth ranks to become a regular feature of the first team, having made 86 appearances across all age levels to date.

The Brazilian still has another two years remaining on his contract in his homeland, but having established himself as his club’s fourth-best performer so far this season, as per WhoScored, his impressive displays have grabbed the attention of Mikel Arteta in N5.

Earlier this month, South American outlet Correio Do Povo reported that the Gunners had sent officials to assess the 23-year-old live in action, and the scouts must have liked what they saw from their overseas trip, as the interest has started to develop.

Soon after, Brazilian outlet UOL claimed that Edu had made personal contact with his target after being individually wowed by his high standard of talent, and if the following update is to be believed, there’s a decent chance that he could be on his way to the Emirates Stadium.

Are Arsenal signing Bitello?

According to 90min, Arsenal are “continuing to work” on a deal to recruit Bitello this summer and are “confident” that they will successfully be able to secure his services.

Arteta’s outfit and Gremio are in “ongoing” discussions for the central talisman, whose price tag is £8.5m, and the player is “eager to move continents”.

The Gunners are also “confident they are at the head of the queue” for the exciting prospect, though it’s worth noting that Monaco, Porto and Zenit St Petersburg have also all held “conversations” over a switch this window, so the Gunners will need to act fast should they want to beat their stiff competition in the race for Bitello.

Bitello

How good is Bitello?

Whilst Bitello is 23 years of age, Arsenal will be aware that he hasn’t had any exposure playing at the highest level outside of Brazil, so he could be more of an ideal signing for the long-term future of the club, but nonetheless, the “unique” central midfielder, as lauded by data analyst Ben Mattinson, has bags of potential to offer to his next club.

The Karan Sports client has clocked up 11 goal contributions (seven goals and four assists) in 36 outings across all competitions so far this season, not to mention 56 shot-creating actions in the Brazilian Serie A, which is currently higher than any of his fellow teammates, as per FBref, showing just how much he stands out compared to his peers.

Gremio’s youth product, who is sponsored by Adidas, is also a versatile operator having been deployed in six different positions since first bursting onto the scene, including four roles in the midfield, out wide on the right flank and even as a second striker, making him a great option for the manager to have at his disposal should any unexpected injuries occur.

Now it is just a case of Arteta and Edu winning the race for his signature to see him strut his stuff at the Emirates Stadium.

Vilas, Clark stop Worcestershire's winning run

Lancashire Lightning recorded their second successive victory in this year’s Royal London One-Day Cup when they defeated the previously undefeated Worcestershire Rapids by 152 runs at Emirates Old Trafford. The result keeps Lancashire’s hopes of qualification from the North Group very much alive, although they probably still need to win all three of their remaining North Group games. Despite this unexpected reverse, Worcestershire are still expected to finish in the top three, thereby ensuring their progression. The game was a triumph for Dane Vilas, who made his maiden Lancashire century in his side’s 313 for 5, but it was even more memorable for Jordan Clark who followed his 79 not out by taking 4 for 34 as Worcestershire managed only 161 all out in 34.5 overs in replyThe first half of Lancashire’s innings was characterised by steady accumulation punctuated by the regular loss of wickets; the second half by a magnificent, unbroken 160-run partnership between Vilas and Clark, the latter’s power-hitting contrasting pleasantly with the South African’s inventive strokeplay and astute innings management. These qualities were noticed by their absence earlier in the morning when Alex Davies had lost his middle stump to the twelfth ball of the day, bowled by John Hastings, and Haseeb Hameed, having batted competently for 36, edged Josh Tongue to Ben Cox when shaping to work the ball to third man.The 19-year-old Tongue soon collected his second notable wicket when Liam Livingstone obligingly pulled him to Ross Whiteley at deep square leg. It was not the subtlest of traps and Lancashire’s problems were compounded five overs later when Karl Brown was bowled by Brett D’Oliveira for a well-made 77-ball 63 which had included four fours and two sixes.Vilas marked his arrival at the wicket by reverse sweeping his first ball from Moeen Ali for four but the England off-spinner claimed an important wicket shortly after when he had Steven Croft lbw for five, leaving Lancashire on 153 for five in the 32nd over.D’Oliveira’s well-controlled leg spin earned him figures of one for 32 from his ten overs but the other bowlers came in for severe punishment as Vilas and Clark’s partnership gathered pace. Ali, who was twice lifted for straight sixes by Clark, finished with one for 75 as the pair set a new List A sixth-wicket record for Lancashire against Worcestershire.Vilas hit twelve fours and, having reached his fifty off 49 balls, took a further 34 deliveries to reach a hundred which was completed off the fourth ball of the final over. Clark, whose batting has been one of the features of Lancashire’s early season, finished with 79 not out off 58 balls. He hit four fours and three sixes. Tongue was the only Rapids bowler to take more than one wicket and he finished with two for 46 off seven overs.Needing to score at 6.26 runs per over to win, Worcestershire’s innings started badly and got progressively worse. Ali completed a poor match when he was well beaten by James Anderson and caught behind in the third over after the resumption.Tom Kohler-Cadmore mis-drove Kyle Jarvis to Stephen Parry three overs later and even the 59-run stand between Daryl Mitchell and Joe Clarke was halted by the loss of four wickets in 21 balls for 12 runs.Mitchell departed for 29 when he chipped Parry to Brown at midwicket and D’Oliveira then feathered a catch to Davies off Clark, who also had his near namesake athletically caught by Anderson for 36.When Whiteley was bowled by one that kept a little low from Clark, Worcestershire were 82 for six in the eighteenth over and their plight became even worse four overs later when Ed Barnard, having made eight, chopped the suddenly unplayable Clark on to his stumps.Brief partnerships merely delayed the inevitable but it allowed Simon Kerrigan to take two wickets and Jarvis to remove Leach for 12.

Arsenal Could Sign ‘Magnificent’ £30m Partey Replacement

Arsenal have had their transfer window dominated by the future of Declan Rice, however, news emerging this week has linked another midfielder to the club in Youssouf Fofana.

Mikel Arteta and Edu will aim to strengthen the title-challenging side of last season this summer, in the bid to keep the Gunners among Europe’s best with Champions League involvement pending.

The Emirates should expect to see a complete renovation of the midfield next campaign, with both incomings and outgoings expected this transfer window.

As reported by the Daily Mail, AS Monaco midfielder Youssouf Fofana could be a player eyed by the club.

The report states that the 24-year-old could emerge as a ‘potential alternative option’ should the Gunners fail to land the signing of Rice this summer.

It was added by reports in France that Monaco value their player at €35m (£30m), with Newcastle and West Ham also named as Premier League clubs interested.

What could Youssouf Fofana offer to Arsenal?

In the midst of the transfer saga surrounding the north Londoners’ summer targets, players have been linked with a move away from the Emirates, with both Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey speculated to depart.

Xhaka was given an unofficial farewell by fans in the final game of the season at the Emirates, with news prior to the end of the calendar linking him with a move back to the Bundesliga.

Partey however has been rumoured to be in the view of Saudi Arabian clubs, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that an exit is ‘possible’, sparking rumours that Rice may not be the only midfielder that could make his way to Arsenal.

Hailed as a “powerhouse” by scout Antonio Mango, Fofana could be a perfect suitor for Arteta should he lose the Ghanaian this summer, with the Frenchman possessing similar strengths to the 30-year-old.

When comparing the two via FBref, it’s clear to see how the 24-year-old could fit into Arteta’s plans, with him adding a significant presence in the engine room with his ability.

Playing in the Spaniard’s title-challenging side, Partey averaged an impressive 8.37 progressive passes per 90 and 1.23 progressive carries, showing strength in areas integral to how Arsenal play out from deep midfield.

The Monaco ace scores similarly to the Ghanaian, making 6.94 progressive passes per 90 and topping Partey in terms of carries with an average of 2.36 per 90, signalling the ways he could flourish at the Emirates.

As per FBref, Arsenal’s number five comes out marginally on top with 2.54 tackles to Fofana’s 2.36 tackles per 90 in Ligue 1, however, the Paris-born gem tips the £160k-per-week star with 1.63 interceptions to his average of 1.10 per 90.

Some of those numbers just so happen to be better than fellow target Rice, who has made 2.17 tackles per 90 and 6.60 progressive passes over the last year.

As claimed by the Daily Mail, the Gunners’ pursuit of the Frenchman could be determined by their success in capturing Rice’s signature, however, there is little to deny that the 24-year-old could add a host of talent to the Spaniard’s depth in midfield.

Cook presses for spin-bowling coach

Alastair Cook has said that the ECB needs to give serious consideration to employing a full-time spin-bowling coach for the national side after the punishment inflicted on the England attack in India.

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Dec-2016Alastair Cook has said that the ECB needs to give serious consideration to employing a full-time spin-bowling coach for the national side after the punishment inflicted on the England attack in India.Cook observed how his spinners, specifically Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid, had appeared more comfortable and confident when Saqlain Mushtaq was with the team as a spin-bowling consultant, a stay which ended after the third Test in Mohali and that had already been an extension on the original deal which had only covered the first Test in Rajkot.England have not had a full-time spin-bowling coach since Mushtaq Ahmed ended his tenure in 2014. Saqlain was first used by England last summer when he joined the squad during the Test series against Pakistan and he has made a favourable impression.”The coincidence when Saqlain was around and how much better we bowled as a group, that’s something the system or whoever needs to look at, in terms of our spinners,” Cook said. While Moeen struggled ever to really gain a foothold in the series with the ball, Rashid’s returns certainly back up Cook’s view. Rashid took 18 of his 23 wickets in the series during the three Tests when Saqlain was present. In those matches he averaged 28.67 while in the final two Tests he took five wickets at 69.England used six spin bowlers throughout the series: Moeen, Rashid, Zafar Ansari, Liam Dawson, Gareth Batty and Joe Root. Their combined returns across the five Tests amounted to 40 wickets at 48.10, which was second worst return for a group of English spinners in India, behind the 1992-93 side. On that tour, a 3-0 whitewash, India’s batsmen flayed the frontline combination of John Emburey, Phil Tufnell and Ian Salisbury to such an extent that Graeme Hick emerged as the leading spinner. Salisbury had begun the tour as a net bowler before being drafted into the Test side after Emburey and Tufnell had been treated with disdain in the warm-ups.Significantly, too, the class of 2016 also conceded runs at a higher rate – 3.55 an over – than on any previous tour of India, which meant Cook was unable to rely on them even for control during long days in the field. The lack of control from the spinners had also been exposed during the two Tests in Bangladesh, while there had been the same problem against Pakistan in the UAE last year when England’s quick bowlers had been outstanding but any pressure was released when the spinners bowled.”I think everyone can see we are suited to playing in seaming conditions,” Cook said. “There’s no point hiding behind that fact. These conditions have tested us to our limits and I really don’t want to be disrespectful to Mo and Adil but they are not as good as Ashwin and Jadeja yet. They haven’t quite got the control and consistency, certainly in the first innings when there’s not much happening.”Mo has done an amazing job for us over a long period in terms of becoming England’s No. 1 spinner. He’s two wickets away from 100 so he’s done amazing things and will only get better and better.”Without being disrespectful, without two gun, world-class spinners, winning in these conditions is going to be hard. In other conditions with our seamers and spinners, who are decent without being completely world-class, we’ll compete with anyone. But this is as hard as it gets for this side at the moment.”

Spinners wrap up India's 246-run victory

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details4:36

Ganguly: Jayant’s temperament was spot on

India’s bowlers required just 38.1 overs to wrap up a 246-run victory on the final day of the second Test in Visakhapatnam, as England’s resolve – fatally weakened by the loss of two wickets late on the fourth evening – was finally cracked with nothing but pride left to play for. The damage had been done in a frantic morning session in which they slumped from 87 for 2 to 142 for 7, and the tail succumbed meekly after lunch, with only Jonny Bairstow showing any real resistance with 34 not out.The margin of victory perhaps overstated the gulf between the sides – the key difference, in every sense, was India’s captain and Man of the Match Virat Kohli, whose aggregate of 248 runs single-handedly accounted for the deficit in England’s balance. But, having fought so hard for so long, especially in the second half of the contest, the speed of their final-day demise was dispiriting for England, with the third Test in Mohali looming large next week.Contrary to all pre-match predictions, the pitch still wasn’t spinning dramatically by the final day, but it was skidding through at a hustling pace to match India’s turbo-charged over-rate – they bowled 33.4 in the morning session, including an extraordinary ten in the first half-hour alone as Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin tied England in knots at a rate of knots. The devastating dismissal of Alastair Cook, in the last over of the fourth day, had left England fearing the worst when play resumed, and there was an inevitability about the identity of the first victim of the morning. Ben Duckett’s rich strokeplay and inventive attitude will doubtless serve him well as his England career progresses, but in this situation – and particularly against his nemesis, Ashwin – those attributes had roughly the same value as an INR 500 note.Sure enough, having withstood 15 deliveries without opening his account, Duckett dropped to one knee in a bid to hit his way out of a corner, but succeeded only in gloving a sweep onto his thigh pad and into the gloves of the wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha. As he trooped disconsolately off the pitch, Duckett might as well have walked straight onto the England bench. His record against Ashwin alone in this series made grim reading – 40 balls, 15 runs, three wickets. He’ll be back, but perhaps not in Mohali next week.Jayant Yadav clipped Ben Stokes’ off stump with a beauty•AFP

Moeen Ali was the next to go, his technique against the spinners looking solid right up until the moment Jadeja got one to grip in the rough outside off, and accelerate onto his inside edge for Kohli to complete a lobbed catch at leg gully. From 75 for 0 after 50 overs, England were now in freefall at 101 for 4 after 74 – the flip-side of their siege mentality being that India were now camping as many as five close catchers under every new batsman’s nose.Such close attention didn’t bother Ben Stokes at first. He had been so solid in defence in the first innings, and continued his tried-and-trusted methods in a 33-ball stay. But, when India turned to the second new ball – and in the process, gave Jadeja’s fingers a rest after 25 overs on the trot had left him with the outstanding figures of 34-14-35-2 – the lankier offspin of Jayant Yadav conjured the ball of the match.A faster, flatter offbreak from around the wicket drifted as Stokes played back, then spat past his edge to clip the outside of his off stump. Stokes nodded his appreciation as the bowler hurtled past in celebration, and when Root was nailed by Mohammed Shami nine balls later, the teams might as well have shaken hands there and then.Root had once again been England’s most accomplished technician on the day. But, having survived an early reprieve when Kohli spilled a sharp chance at leg slip, he was pinned on the crease by a zippy nipbacker from Shami and sent on his way for 25 from 107 balls. There was time for one more breakthrough before lunch, as Adil Rashid top-edged an attempted ramp over the slips, to give Shami his second wicket of the innings, and the denouement came in a resigned procession after the resumption.Zafar Ansari completed a match every bit as ignominious as Duckett’s when Ashwin skidded a flat offbreak into his off stump for a duck, before Jayant produced a carbon copy of England’s demise in the first innings, trapping Stuart Broad and James Anderson with consecutive lbws. Anderson completed his comeback Test with a king pair, remarkably the first by an England batsman for 110 years. That wasn’t the sort of history that Cook’s men had targeted at the start of the tour, but with three matches to come and some clear signs of life amid the ruins of today’s effort, there will be chances to atone in the coming weeks. But a few correct calls at the toss would be a start.

Burnley Have Held Talks To Sign £13k-p/w Marksman

An update has emerged on Burnley and their plans to bolster their attack heading into the upcoming summer transfer window…

What's the latest on Mama Balde to Burnley?

According to French outlet L'Equipe, the Clarets are interested in a deal to sign Troyes centre-forward Mama Balde ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

The report claims that Vincent Kompany has already held talks with the player regarding a potential move to Turf Moor, although it remains to be seen how much the Ligue 1 side are set to demand for his services.

It is stated that the 27-year-old marksman, whose contract expires in the summer of 2025, is one of the club's biggest priorities as they aim to improve their squad following promotion to the Premier League.

How has Mama Balde performed this season?

The Troyes star, who has been hailed as their "key man" by journalist Josh Bunting, has enjoyed an excellent campaign in front of goal in the French top flight and could form an exciting partnership with current Burnley star Manuel Benson.

Burnley winger Manuel Benson.

Balde's side have been relegated to Ligue 2 but the club's poor form has not stopped him from plundering an impressive 12 goals – more than any Clarets striker managed in 22/23 – and three assists in 33 matches.

The £13k-per-week ace also works hard for his team and that could be vital in a potential battle against relegation. He ranks in the top 16% of players in his position in the Men's Big Five Leagues and European competitions for tackles, interceptions, and blocks per 90 and this means that he is well above average at cutting out opposition attacks from a forward position.

Benson, meanwhile, contributed with 11 goals and three assists in 33 Championship appearances as a winger. The ace has the quality to make a huge impact at the top end of the pitch and could thrive alongside an impressive number nine like Balde.

In the second tier in 22/23, the Burnley magician created 0.25 xAG per 90 – ranking in the top 16% of players in his position in the Men's Next Eight Competitions over the last 365 days – and this suggests that the gem has the potential to be a creative force who could provide the Troyes finisher with the opportunities he needs in front of goal.

Benson also ranks in the top 1% of players in his position for non-penalty goals per 90 (0.66) and this shows that the dynamo is an effective scorer who could link up with Balde to form a terrifying duo for opposition defences next term, as both players have the potential to be lethal goalscorers in the top-flight if they can adapt to Premier League football.

Wolves Could Replace Star Man With £9m Colossus

Wolverhampton Wanderers are set to have a busy summer, but not necessarily for the right reasons.

There are ongoing pressures behind the scenes regarding the club’s Financial Fair Play status, with Wolves needing to make a profit this summer while aiming to progress under Julen Lopetegui.

The Spaniard pulled off an incredible feat in keeping the Midlands club safe from relegation after being bottom of the table on Christmas Day.

While Wolves require assistance in attack this summer, being the Premier League’s lowest scorers this campaign, the club have been linked with a player of an opposing position.

What’s the latest on Sergio Herrera to Wolves?

As reported this week by Spanish news outlet Noticias de Navarra, Osasuna goalkeeper Sergio Herrera is wanted by Lopetegui at Molineux.

The report states that the 29-year-old is ‘very much to the taste’ of the Spanish coach, who could hunt for another ‘keeper this summer.

According to Football Transfers, the player is valued at €10.1m (£9m).

What could Sergio Herrera bring to Wolves?

Lauded as having “great intuition” by Osasuna manager Jagoba Arrasate after saving two penalties against Real Madrid last season, the 29-year-old has been one of the club’s best performers this season, as per Sofascore.

The Spanish "hero" – as per Graham Hunter – has saved 50% of penalties he’s faced over the past year, ranking him in the top 9% of ‘keepers in Europe’s top five leagues in that expertise – as per FBref.

His style of play, as per WhoScored, states that he enjoys coming off of his line to prevent threats, as well as being a strong passer from the back.

While Wolves have a competent shot-stopper in Jose Sa, the club’s number one has been inconsistent this season, on the back of being named Molineux’s player of the season last campaign.

It’s healthy for players to have competition for starting places in every position, with the specialist area of a goalkeeper sometimes being overlooked with rotation sparse in comparison to those who play outfield.

When comparing the seasons of Wolves’ “top drawer” keeper – as praised by former club star Lee Naylor – and Lopetegui’s reported target, the Spaniard’s potential arrival could bring bad news to Sa.

The 30-year-old Molineux ace has contributed to four errors leading to shots this season, as well as one leading to a goal, with the Osasuna shot-stopper making two errors leading to a shot and none to a goal – as per Sofascore.

The rise of Daniel Bentley has left the Portuguese player out of the starting XI as of late, with pressures potentially mounting on his position if Herrera was to arrive.

It seems as though Lopetegui will have to be smart with his finances this summer, and signing a ‘keeper as rounded as Herrera for a price as low as £9m could prove to be a bargain should the deal materialise.

Tottenham Hotspur Make Approach For "Exciting" 43 y/o Manager

Tottenham Hotspur have made an approach for Brighton & Hove Albion manager Roberto De Zerbi, according to journalist Guillem Balague.

What's the latest Tottenham manager news?

Tottenham have now entered talks with Burnley boss Vincent Kompany, according to journalist Pete O'Rourke, who also states the club are speaking to both Arne Slot and Julian Nagelsmann about taking over at the end of the season.

Nagelsmann is believed to be "interested" in the Spurs job, although he has reservations about the club's lack of structure, meaning the club's hierarchy may have to target other options, such as Bayer Leverkusen's Xabi Alonso.

Alonso is now said to have emerged as a target for the Lilywhites, as key figures within the boardroom admire the Spaniard, but he has played down the rumours, despite some reports indicating he is the club's top target.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live's Euro Leagues, Balague has now given an update on Spurs' pursuit of the Brighton manager, saying:

"In the last two weeks, I’ll give you the names of managers that privately had shown how much in awe they are of Roberto De Zerbi and what he is doing at Brighton.

"They love the fact that they chase every ball, they don’t give rivals a chance, they are full of confidence, they don’t have any panic in the way they play, they are very strong in positions, they have midfielders that want the ball even if they have no space.

"Those are Ruben Amorim (Sporting Lisbon manager), Unai Emery, who I spent half an hour listening to him at the Leicester game talking about De Zerbi, Pep [Guardiola], [Mauricio] Pochettino, Xavi and Mikel Arteta.

"They really, really like what he is doing and it’s interesting that it seems his next step is to actually stay at Brighton for one more year to keep learning the league he is in.

"But obviously he has been approached by Spurs and he will have bigger approaches by the sound of it."

Should Tottenham appoint Roberto De Zerbi?

It is no wonder the Tottenham board are keen on the 43-year-old, given that he has done a fantastic job as manager of Brighton, with his side well in contention to qualify for Europe next season.

Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi

Hailed as "exciting" by members of the media, the Italian has got Brighton playing "attractive, attacking football" which has taken the Seagulls to the "next level", according to journalist John Bennett.

It may be difficult to lure De Zerbi away from Brighton, particularly if they finish higher than Spurs this season, which is a real possibility, however if Daniel Levy is able to tempt him, he would be an excellent appointment for Tottenham.
