Serie A club agree permanent deal to sign 22 y/o Chelsea gem after Lukaku

With the transfer window soon coming to a close, Chelsea have reportedly shown the door to another academy graduate with a Serie A side once again taking full advantage.

Chelsea transfer news

The Blues have stolen the headlines yet again this summer. Whether for the right or wrong reasons is still up for debate, but Todd Boehly has put any doubters to one side in pursuit of completing his Stamford Bridge project. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Pedro Neto and, most recently, Joao Felix have all arrived alongside seven others, as Chelsea look to finally turn a corner.

Returning to the London club on a permanent basis, Felix told Chelsea's official website: "It’s a chance for me to find a home. After two loans, Chelsea and Barca, I needed to stay permanently in one place. There is no better place for me to be than Chelsea. I see a perfect place to shine."

Amid so many arrivals, however, there have been several exits with Conor Gallagher sealing a move to Atletico Madrid and Romelu Lukaku on course to end his Chelsea nightmare after an agreement was reportedly reached with Napoli. And the Belgian may not be the only one off to the Serie A this summer.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Tino Anjorin is the "next" player to leave Chelsea this summer after Empoli reached a permanent agreement to sign the 22-year-old attacking midfielder. Likely to square off against Lukaku in Italy, Anjorin will hope to become another academy graduate that the Blues regret letting go.

On course to become the ninth player to leave Chelsea on a permanent basis this summer, it's fair to say that the Blues have been in a ruthless mood in recent months.

"Outstanding" Anjorin needs Chelsea exit

After showing glimpses of his best form on loan at both Huddersfield Town and Portsmouth, all it takes is one look at the current Chelsea squad to realise that Anjorin may be better off heading for the exit door courtesy of Empoli. Leaving his boyhood club will be far from easy, but it's a must at 22 years old and unlikely to earn consistent game time.

Tino Anjorin for Huddersfield Town.

Receiving plenty of praise during his time at Huddersfield, former manager Danny Schofield told FourFourTwo after a 2-2 draw against West Bromwich Albion in 2022: "Tino Anjorin scored two outstanding goals. He’s a player we know has got a lot of potential. Tino Anjorin has game-winning qualities which is hard to come by in football.”

Two years on from that loan spell, it's now Empoli who stands to benefit from those "game-winning qualities" as another Chelsea academy graduate heads for the exit door.

Imagine him & Joseph: Leeds targeting late swoop for "unplayable" EFL star

The summer transfer window officially slams shut on Friday of next week and this means that Leeds United do not have much time left to complete their business.

Georginio Rutter's permanent transfer to Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion was officially confirmed on Monday night, with the Frenchman becoming the latest star to move away from Elland Road in recent months.

Glen Kamara, who signed for Rennes, Archie Gray, who joined Tottenham Hotspur, and Crysencio Summerville, who moved to West Ham United, have also left the club this summer.

Meanwhile, the West Yorkshire outfit have dipped into the transfer market to land Alex Cairns, Joe Rothwell, Jayden Bogle, and Joe Rodon to bolster Daniel Farke's squad.

This means that the Whites are yet to add an attacking midfielder, winger, or striker to the group, despite losing Summerville and Rutter from the team.

However, there are still around ten days left to go before the window slams shut and there is some time left for Leeds to pursue deals for attackers to improve Farke's attacking options ahead of the rest of the 2024/25 campaign.

In fact, the Yorkshire-based outfit are reportedly eyeing up a winger from the Championship to come in and replace Summerville this month.

Leeds eyeing swoop for EFL sensation

According to Football Insider, Leeds are targeting a late swoop to bring former academy graduate Jack Clarke back to Elland Road from divisional rivals Sunderland.

The report claims that the English wizard, who was described as "unplayable" by pundit Adrian Clarke, is one of the players the club have identified as a target to come in and bolster their wide options before the deadline passes.

It states that the Whites have decided that they will sign a winger and a striker before the end of the window, following the departures of Rutter and Summerville.

Jack Clarke

The Boot Room reports that Leeds are interested in signing Clarke and goes as far as to say that the Black Cats whiz is open to returning to his former club.

It added, though, that there are a number of teams keen on the electric forward and it will not be an easy deal for Farke's side to get over the line.

The outlet also revealed that it will take a fee of around £18m to tempt Sunderland into parting ways with their star player and it remains to be seen whether or not the Whites are prepared to spend that much on a signing this summer.

If they do splash the cash and swoop to sign Clarke for £18m, the Black Cats magician could come in as a dream partner for Mateo Joseph in the final third.

Mateo Joseph's attacking potential

Leeds supporters saw first-hand how willing Farke is to give young players a chance to showcase their ability, as Gray was handed a regular role in the team and earned the Championship Young Player of the Year award.

Joseph looks set to be the latest talented prospect to get the Gray treatment from the German head coach. He started the first two games of the league season, having come into the campaign with zero senior league starts in his career.

The Spain U21 international is yet to get off the mark this term but did create a 'big chance' for his teammates, which they failed to make the most of.

He has been handed an opportunity after an impressive summer, in which the youngster scored four goals during pre-season, with two strikes against Hannover, one against Schalke, and one against Valencia.

Last season, all 20 of his appearances in the Championship came as a substitute but he did get a chance to impress as a starter against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the FA Cup.

As you can see in the table above, Joseph found the back of the net twice against the Premier League side and created two chances for his teammates, which shows that he can make a big impact when given time and service.

The Spanish striker, who scored 19 goals in 33 games for the club at U21 level, did not have Rutter to provide him with service against West Brom on Saturday, and the signing of Clarke could provide him with a player who can create chances for him.

Why Leeds should sign Jack Clarke

Firstly, the 23-year-old gem came up through the ranks at Thorp Arch and may not take much time to settle in, as he has lived in the area and will already know people around the club.

This could allow him to hit the ground running in a way that a signing with no prior experience in the area or at the club may not be able to do this summer.

Secondly, he is a proven Championship performer who has the quality to make a huge impact at the top end of the pitch, based on his form for Sunderland in recent seasons.

As you can see in the table above, the English sensation has provided a big threat in the final third for the Black Cats, as both a scorer and a creator of goals.

This suggests that he could arrive at Elland Road this summer and Farke could expect him to immediately be a key player for the team, due to his proven quality at that level.

His creative prowess could also make him the perfect winger to play alongside Joseph, as he has the ability to consistently create high-quality chances for the forward.

In the 2023/24 campaign, Clarke created 12 'big chances' for his teammates and racked up 9.77 xA in the Championship. However, he was only rewarded with four assists, which shows that his fellow attackers let him down with their wasteful finishing.

Farke could land his own Raphinha in Leeds swoop for "electric" wizard

The Whites are reportedly interested in signing the Championship winger this month.

ByDan Emery Aug 20, 2024

This suggests that Joseph would not be starved of service at the top end of the pitch if Leeds sign the winger, which is why they could be an exciting pairing for the club.

Joe Root: Chennai Test 'a bit of an education' for England

“We are one-all, and very excited about that because of how well we played in the first game”

ESPNcricinfo staff16-Feb-2021Joe Root has urged England to learn their lessons quickly following a chastening defeat in the second Test against India in Chennai. England collapsed to 164 all out in their second innings shortly after lunch on day four, as India wrapped up a crushing 317-run victory, their largest win by runs in Tests between the two sides. The deficit would have been greater still but for a brief flurry of 43 from 18 balls from Moeen Ali at No. 9, whom Root confirmed will play no further part in the series after choosing to fly home for the final two Tests. But having made only 134 in their first innings, England amassed fewer runs in the match (298) than India’s two highest scorers, Rohit Sharma and R Ashwin, who made 306 runs between them, including a century apiece.”We were outplayed in all three departments this week,” Root told the official broadcaster after the game. “It’s a bit of an education. We’ve got to learn from this because sometimes these are the conditions that you come up against.”We’ve got to find a way of scoring runs in these conditions, finding ways of building pressure for long periods of time with the ball, and in bowling six balls at one batter. Credit to India, they made that very difficult for us.”

“There’s a few guys that haven’t played a lot in this part of the world. So we got to learn quickly and I think that’s one thing that we’ve done quite well in the recent time, so hopefully we can take that into the rest of this series”Joe Root

After losing an important toss, England were pushed on to the defensive from the outset thanks to a masterful initiative-seizing innings from Sharma, whose first-day 161 included 80 runs in the first session alone. By the time England’s turn came to bat on the second day, India’s total of 329 already looked daunting.”On day one, we could have probably been a little bit tighter and squeezed the game a little bit more, restricted them and made it a little bit harder for them to score as freely as they did,” Root admitted. “And then, with the bat, it was obviously quite a challenging wicket from day two onwards, but we’re going to have to be quite smart about how we’re going to score runs out here, how we’re going to build an innings, and we’ve got to learn from the opposition who played very well in these conditions.”The result was quite the comedown after England’s 227-run victory – their match aggregate of 298 was their lowest since the Edgbaston Test against West Indies in 1995, and their second-lowest in Asia behind the Mumbai Test in 1981-82.Asked his opinion of a Chennai surface that has been the focus of intense scrutiny throughout the match, Root acknowledged that the pitch had been “challenging”, but stopped short of outright criticism.”It’s very alien to what a lot of English guys will have experienced before, as are green seamers that you might across in the UK. Do I think it was a good pitch? I wouldn’t say it was a good pitch, but it made for very exciting cricket.”I do think that the toss was an important one to win but it wouldn’t have guaranteed us to win the game either,” he added. “India showed that you can score runs on it and found a way of managing a very tricky surface so we’ve got to learn from that.”There are not many times that guys will have batted on a wicket that has bounced and spun and misbehaved as much as that. One thing I take from how [India] played is how calm they stayed, how unflustered they were when deliveries did really misbehave.”How they didn’t get away from their game plan, how they knew exactly the way they were going to score their runs. How they managed to bat at the other end for long periods of time.”And as a batting group, how does that look for us individually? How I am going to manage these big turning deliveries and how am I going to stay really calm and clear under pressure? We’ve got to take bits from it and add it to our own games, and come back better for it as well.”However, Root insisted that England were still very much in contention with two Tests to play, including the unknown quantity of the day-night Test at Ahmedabad next week, which will be played with a pink SG ball – a match for which James Anderson and Jofra Archer are expected to return to lead the seam attack, after Anderson was rested and Archer missed out with an elbow complaint.”He has been back into training the last couple of days,” Root said of Archer. “His workload will build up ahead of the game. Hopefully he will be available for selection all being well for this pink-ball Test.”We are one-all in the series, with two very important games to come and we’re very excited about that because of how well we played in the first game,” Root added. “We’re very much in the series. [The day-night Test] will be very different. We’ve only played two pink-ball games, one in Australia with a Kookaburra, one in England with the Dukes, so it’ll be different again, I’m sure, but it’s an exciting opportunity to play at what looks like a fantastic venue.”Day-night cricket offers something different again, so we are very much looking forward to that. We’ll have a little bit of a break now to refresh and have a look at a few things, but it’s exciting times.”It’s just very important that we stay level as a team,” he added. “We’ve got to stay very level, and understand that we’ve played a lot of very good cricket in the recent past. We don’t get too far above our station when we win and we don’t see it as doom and gloom when we have tough weeks like we have this time round.”We performed well last week, but we got to learn the lessons. There’s a few guys that haven’t played a lot in this part of the world. So we got to learn quickly and I think that’s one thing that we’ve done quite well in the recent time, so hopefully we can take that into the rest of this series.”

Newcastle expected to make offer for £8.5m+ player from European Champions

As Newcastle United look to put last season's disappointing seventh-placed Premier League finish behind them, they are linked with a player who could fix a major problem at St James' Park.

Toon look to improve on disappointing campaign

The latest transfer news out of St James' Park suggests that Newcastle are looking to put last season's failure to capture European football behind them and build a squad ready to once again disrupt the Premier League's traditional big six.

Defensive reinforcements appear to be a high priority for the Magpies with the latest news linking the Toon with a move for AC Milan's Fikayo Tomori. The English centre back could be made available for £42million this summer, making him an attractive target for Newcastle. Another Englishman abroad linked with a move to Tyneside is Tammy Abraham. The ex-Chelsea man is currently at Roma, with the Italian outfit reportedly offering the player to clubs for just £28 million.

The main area of concern for Newcastle is between the sticks however. With Nick Pope's season-ending injury back in December placing his Toon future in doubt, a fresh face in goal is now their top priority. Additionally, it appears that current backup choice Martin Dubravka could follow Loris Karius out of the exit door.

Burnley's James Trafford is the name most frequently linked with a move to Tyneside with Newcastle reportedly close to completing a £20million move to secure the services of the England keeper. Despite conceding 62 goals as Burnley suffered immediate relegation back to the Championship, Trafford is still viewed as a goalkeeper with a bright future ahead of him.

With a goalkeeper at the top of the PIF's shopping list, Newcastle are also apparrently set to launch a bid for a goalkeeper who was crowned a European Champion last season.

Magpies ready bid for Atalanta's Musso

As first reported by Sport Witness, the Italian press are stating that Newcastle have made contact to sign Atalanta goalkeeper Juan Musso. The outlet reports that Magpies are joined by Villarreal and Genoa in pursuit of the Argentine shot-stopper.

If the Toon are serious about signing Musso, they will have to fork out more than £8.5 million to tempt the 30-year-old away from Bergamo. The Italian press go on to report that Newcastle see the South American as an "ideal reinforcement" and claim that they could "soon make a concrete offer" to secure his services.

Musso made just 11 appearances in the league last season, however excelled in Atalanta's Europa League campaign. The 30-year-old featured in all but one of his side's games in the competition and kept a clean sheet in the final as Atalanta ran away 3-0 winners against Bayer Leverkusen.

It is clear that Musso would be a perfect fit for Newcastle's situation – the 2-cap Argentina international is a goalkeeper that is comfortable playing back up but can step up when necessary. If Pope is to face an uncertain future at St James' Park, bringing in Musso would be an ideal option for the Magpies' higher ups.

Arsenal now really want £40m star despite Ten Hag being in pole position

Arsenal are thought to be big admirers of a £40 million player who's climbed their summer transfer shortlist, despite Man United being in pole position to do a deal for him as things stand.

Edu and Arteta looking at new centre-back for Arsenal

Despite the fine form of William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes, who have shone at the heart of Mikel Arteta's defence since the beginning of 2022/2023, it is believed that sporting director Edu could add another central defender to the Spaniard's ranks.

Arsenal table offer for Real Madrid regular who Perez may now sell for £34m

He could bolster one key area for Arteta.

ByEmilio Galantini Jun 13, 2024

Arsenal boasted the best defensive record in the Premier League last season, conceding fewer goals than any other side in the division, with both Gabriel and Saliba coming as a huge part of that.

However, there is a case to be made that they're lacking star quality alternatives to the defensive duo. Ben White has been starring at right-back under Arteta, while Takehiro Tomiyasu can be deployed at centre-half but is favoured in the wide area.

The same can be said for Poland international Jakub Kiwior, who featured at left-back more often than not last season, and only once as a centre-back against Crystal Palace. Arsenal, therefore, are monitoring different central defensive options to potentially come in this summer.

Indeed, the north Londoners have been linked with Nottingham Forest star Murillo this week as one option. Football Transfers reported that Edu is personally pushing to sign Murillo for Arsenal, with the help of chief scout and close advisor Paulo Xavier, and this is semi-backed by reliable journalist Chris Wheatley.

Arsenal really want Jean-Clair Todibo with Man United favourites

However, according to Wheatley, speaking on Shots TV (via TBR), they also have their eyes firmly on £40 million OGC Nice stalwart Jean-Clair Todibo.

Nice centre-back Jean-Claire Todibo.

Todibo is now above other targets on Arsenal's shortlist, who they apparently must rate pretty highly, but they'll have to contend with Erik ten Hag and United, who are thought to be in pole position right now.

“A name was mentioned to me a few weeks ago and that was Jean-Clair Todibo from Nice,” Wheatley said.

“He’s, again, really sought-after, Man United have been the main name linked with him. But interestingly, I heard that he was above other players on Arsenal’s shortlist.

“The Nottingham Forest defender Murillo – he’s attracted a lot of interest, of course, he had an amazing first season at Forest. Plucked from Corinthians and he’s really caught a lot of interest from teams across the Premier League. Tottenham, as well, really like him.

“I think it’s more Edu at Arsenal who really likes Murillo than Arteta. But Todibo, he’s the one that was mentioned to me. It will be interesting to see exactly what happens to him this summer but I think Man United, at the moment, are probably frontrunners for his signature.”

Man Utd can forget McKenna with 4-2-3-1 boss who’s "always liked" Rashford

The 2023/24 season all comes to a head for Manchester United on Saturday afternoon, with the traditional season finale of the FA Cup final. Erik ten Hag’s side will meet their rivals Manchester City at Wembley for the second consecutive season, aiming to right their wrongs of last campaign and go out on a high note.

There is no doubt that it has been a poor campaign for Ten Hag and his team, finishing eighth in the Premier League, with a win against City now the only way they can qualify for Europe. In recent weeks, the rumours of the Dutchman departing United have been intensifying, but on Friday, journalists all but confirmed the news.

According to The Guardian's Jacob Steinberg, United’s new owners have “decided to sack Erik ten Hag after the FA Cup final”, regardless of the result against Pep Guardiola’s side. Ten Hag himself has already denied this, saying that INEOS “told me directly” that they would like to rebuild the club with him at the helm.

Ipswich boss and former United coach Kieran McKenna is hotly tipped to take charge of the Red Devils if Ten Hag does get removed from his post. He has done a super job with the Tractor Boys, helping them to back-to-back promotion from League One and the Championship.

However, there have been rumours this week of another recently sacked manager taking over at Old Trafford ahead of next season.

Man Utd’s managerial plans for the summer

The manager in question here is former PSG and Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino. Chelsea sacked the Argentine on Tuesday afternoon, and it has already been suggested that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS could turn to him to take over at Old Trafford.

According to insider Graeme Bailey, Pochettino is in the mix for the role and is already 'willing to make a quick return to coaching' following his dismissal at Stamford Bridge. Despite a tough start to the season, Chelsea’s form took a positive turn towards the business end, losing just three games in all competitions since the start of February, with only one of those defeats coming in the Premier League.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Indeed, as Bailey points out, Pochettino’s sacking from the Blues means that there will be no release clause or need to buy him out of his contract. Bailey makes it clear that this has 'been highlighted to interested parties' already by his entourage.

This leaves the door open for United, or other clubs requiring a manager this summer, to make a quick move and appoint the Argentine without spending a penny. Whilst McKenna is no doubt an attractive prospect for the Red Devils, a deal for Pochettino is almost too good to be true.

How Pochettino would benefit Marcus Rashford

Pochettino is famed for his time at Tottenham, which included a superb run to the Champions League final in 2018. His fluid 4-2-3-1 system was one of the most enterprising in football at the time.

Although his side were trophyless, he brought Spurs to the brink of success which they had never experienced during the Premier League era. He was so good that former Spurs goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes described him as a “football genius” for his exploits in north London.

Former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino.

One of the success stories of Pochettino’s time at Spurs was Son Heung-min, who thrived under the Argentine. He joined the club in 2015 for £22m and has become one of the best players in the Lilywhites’ history.

Under Pochettino, Son scored 75 goals and registered 35 assists in 203 games. He was deadly from the left, driving at players from his starting position out wide and exploiting the penalty box. If Pochettino got the United job, we could well see a similar role for Marcus Rashford, which could help him rediscover his best form.

There is no doubting Rashford’s quality. Whilst he has had a disappointing season in 2023/24, with just eight goals in all competitions, he has 131 goals and 64 assists for United in 401 games. He is a deadly winger when at his best, relentlessly running at players and using his pace to get in behind. Like he did with Son, this is a strength that Pochettino could exploit.

Pochettino has openly praised the 26-year-old in the past. In an interview with Sky Sports during the 2022 World Cup, the former Spurs boss explained that he has “always liked” Rashford, before discussing how he believes the winger is “a great player” and that the “quality is there for him”.

On reading this, United fans might be licking their lips at the heights Rashford could reach under Pochettino. He has a good track record with getting the best out of direct, wingers, with Son the perfect example. If United do decide to go down the Pochettino route, Red Devils fans could see the best of Rashford once again.
