    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Rashford is one of five first-team players at United who are actively seeking transfers away from Old Trafford this summer. The 27-year-old was sent out on loan to Aston Villa in January after falling out with Ruben Amorim and is searching for a new home, with reports suggesting he favours a move to Barcelona. However, United are now braced for a loan offer with an option to buy Rashford outright from Fenerbahce, with talks between the two clubs scheduled for later this week.

Shakib Al Hasan returned to Bangladesh’s World Cup camp in Kolkata on Thursday evening, cutting short his three-day Dhaka trip to two days. Shakib had gone to Dhaka on October 25 to have a nets session with his childhood mentor Nazmul Abedeen Fahim.Bangladesh trained at Eden Gardens on Wednesday under lights, without Shakib of course, who had taken the evening flight from Dhaka. He reached the team hotel around 8.45pm where the team manager Rabeed Imam received him. Coach Chandika Hathurusinghe, on his way out to dinner, also met Shakib at the reception.According to the team management, Shakib didn’t tell them that he was returning home for cricketing reasons. Team director Khaled Mahmud, who is the head of the Bangladesh delegation in India, said that Shakib had said it was for “personal reasons” that he was going to Dhaka from Mumbai the day after their 149-run defeat to South Africa.”We have no idea about this,” Mahmud had told the Dhaka-based on Wednesday. “He may have gone to Fahim since he is not batting well. But we didn’t know about this. [Wednesday] was travel and rest day. [Thursday] is optional training. That’s why coach gave him the two-day break. He said that he had some personal matters in Dhaka. We know that much only.”Shakib reached Dhaka on Wednesday morning, going straight to the Shere Bangla National Stadium nets where Fahim met him. Shakib batted under his watch for three hours.Shakib has struggled with the bat at this World Cup, having scored just 56 runs in four innings. He has taken six wickets so far.Bangladesh have an afternoon training session in Kolkata on October 27, with the match against Netherlands on the following day.

Arteta's dream signing: £120m striker now expresses desire to join Arsenal

A “world-class” striker, who is Mikel Arteta’s dream signing, has now expressed his desire to sign for Arsenal this summer, according to a report.

Gunners stepping up striker pursuit

As we start to move closer to the summer transfer window, the Gunners have now stepped up their pursuit of a new striker, having identified a number of big-name targets.

Arteta’s side have now started work on the signing of Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres, having requested a formal meeting with the agent of the Sweden international.

Talks have also been opened over a deal for Lille striker Jonathan David, whose availability on a free transfer could make him an attractive option this summer, while the Canadian has also been outscoring fellow target Benjamin Sesko this season.

Another target, who it could prove to be much more difficult to sign, is Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak, with the Magpies believed to be holding out for £120m for the striker, who helped lead them to their first major honour in 70 years in the EFL Cup.

However, there has now been a new update on Arsenal’s pursuit of Isak, with a report from Spain revealing the Swedish forward has now expressed his desire to move to the Emirates Stadium this summer.

Sweden's AlexanderIsakin action with Northern Ireland's George Saville

The 25-year-old is keen to advance his career by signing for a club capable of competing for the top honours, and with Arteta looking to bring in a reliable goalscorer, a move to north London could be on the cards.

However, it is expected to be very difficult to prise the striker away from Newcastle, who will hold out for a huge fee, and there may be competition for his signature from Premier League title rivals Liverpool.

"World-class" Isak is Arteta's dream signing

Arteta has been a fan of the Newcastle star for quite some time, having considered him a dream signing for almost a year, and his exceptional goal return this season is only likely to have made the Gunners boss even more determined to sign him.

Reporter Jacque Talbot has lauded the former Real Sociedad man as “world-class”, and his goal record indicates he could be the missing piece of the jigsaw for Arsenal, who are perhaps a top striker away from winning the Premier League title.

The Sweden international is not merely a goalscorer, however, with Gary Neville insisting he is the best all-round striker in the Premier League.

“I think he is. Purely because you watch Erling Haaland a lot and he’s a world-class striker but his general play is nothing like Isak’s at this moment in time.”

It could still be very difficult to pull off a deal for Isak this summer, but it is a positive development that he would be keen on a move to the Emirates Stadium.

Rodri's perfect partner: Man City weigh up move for "world-class" £59m star

Back in December, Pep Guardiola declared that Manchester City are “at risk” of missing out on Champions League qualification.

Well, this forecast could come to pass.

On Saturday, the Sky Blues were beaten 1-0 at Nottingham Forest, their 15th defeat in 30 matches; prior to this, their previous 15 losses had been spread across 169 matches, dating back over four years.

This has seen them slide down to fifth in the Premier League table, above Newcastle by virtue of goal difference alone, just a point clear of Brighton, who they’ll welcome to the Etihad on Saturday.

So Guardiola, alongside new sporting director Hugo Viana, is going to need to oversee a mass rebuilding of the squad this summer, so could the Citizens target one of the world’s most highly-rated midfielders?

Manchester City seeking to sign world-class midfielder

According to a report by Florian Plettenberg of Sky Sports Deutschland, Man City have Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga ‘on their list’, adding that the Frenchman is yet to decide whether he wants to move this summer.

This would be in line with Man City’s current transfer strategy of reducing the average age of the squad.

In January, as noted by Philip Buckingham of the Athletic, the Sky Blues splashed £178m on five new acquisitions, which was more than the other 19 Premier League clubs combined.

They recruited Abdukodir Khusanov (21), Vitor Reis (19), Juma Bah (18), Nico González (23) and Omar Marmoush (26), while allowing 34-year-old Kyle Walker to depart for AC Milan, with other stalwarts in the 30s, including John Stones and Kevin De Bruyne, potentially on the way out too.

So, could Camavinga be the marquee signing of Man City’s summer rebuild?

How Camavinga would fit in at Manchester City

Still only 22-years-old, Camavinga burst onto the scene at Stade Rennais, debuting for les Rouge et Noirs shortly after his 16th birthday, becoming their youngest-ever player, before also being named man of the match during a 2-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain a few months later.

His 88 appearances for Rennes earned rave reviews, with Jacek Kulig from Football Talent Scout labelling him a ‘world-class talent’, earning international recognition too, becoming France’s youngest senior goalscorer since Maurice Gastiger in 1914 by netting against Ukraine in October 2020.

Thus, in the summer of 2021, Real Madrid paid a reported fee of £34.4m to secure his services, making 171 appearances for los Blancos to date, winning 11 major honours already, including two La Liga title and the Champions League twice.

Parshva Shah of Goal describes him as ‘defensively exceptional’, leading to, as outlined by Philippe Auclair of the Guardian, Camavinga regularly being forced to fill in at left-back, despite the fact his manager Carlo Ancelotti has explicitly stated that his best position is defensive midfield.

Thus, despite the fact he has signed a new contract until 2029, reports in Spain suggest President Florentino Pérez is open to offers, valuing the Frenchman at €70m (around £59m), which would surely be a bargain.

Man City’s star midfielder Rodri returned to individual training last week, with Guardiola revealing the Spaniard could be back in action this season, especially with the FIFA Club World Cup to come in June and July, having ruptured his ACL in September.

So, how do Rodri and Camavinga compare, and would they work as a midfield partnership?

As the table outlines, in league matches since August 2022, Rodri does come out on top for most metrics.

Considering he’s the Ballon d’Or holder, that should hardly be a surprise. That said, Camavinga has accumulated more tackles and is comparable when it comes to progressive carries, interceptions and pass completion.

That indicates that the Frenchman would certainly be well-suited to Guardiola’s passing style of play.

Thus, unquestionably, the Frenchman would be an excellent signing for Man City, with all the statistics suggesting he could be a perfect Rodri partner, or at the very least certainly an upgrade on both Mateo Kovačić and İlkay Gündoğan.

Tottenham now "in the running" to sign "freak of nature" £20m midfielder

Tottenham Hotspur are now “in the running” to sign a “freak of nature” midfielder this summer, having conducted scouting missions this season, according to former scout Mick Brown.

Spurs eyeing move for midfielder

Tottenham’s midfield has looked solid at times when everyone is fully-fit, with the trio of James Maddison, Rodrigo Bentancur and Lucas Bergvall performing well in the recent 1-0 victory against Manchester United in the Premier League.

Maddison bagged the winner in the narrow victory over the Red Devils, which saw the Lilywhites rise to 12th place.

However, Ange Postecoglou clearly feels some additional depth is required, given that the manager has been left short on midfield options at times this season due to the injury crisis he has had to deal with.

Several targets have been identified by Spurs, with the likes of Palmeiras’ Richard Rios and Real Betis’ Johnny Cardoso on the shortlist, and there is now a feeling they are also keen on signing one of the Championship’s stars.

In a recent interview with Football Insider, ex-scout Mick Brown stated Tottenham are one of the clubs keeping a close eye on Sunderland’s Jobe Bellingham, who could leave this summer if the Black Cats receive a big offer.

“Crystal Palace and Tottenham have had scouts watching him this season so they’ll be two of the teams in the running if he is going to leave. So it’ll be up to them to assess whether he’s ready to make that jump.

“From a Sunderland point of view, knowing the way the owners want to operate, I think if they get a huge bid for him then they’ll let him go.

Sunderland'sJobeBellingham

Amid links to Arsenal last month, the Sunderland star was thought to have a price tag of £20m, but the asking price could theoretically rise if he continues to impress over the course of the next few months.

Bellingham emerging as key player for Sunderland

The Black Cats are pushing for promotion to the Premier League this season, and the 19-year-old has established himself as a key player, making 28 appearances in the Championship, during which time he has picked up four goals and three assists.

Not only is the teenager a threat going forward, but he has also done a stellar job defensively over the past year, ranking in the 90th percentile for aerials won and the 87th percentile for clearances, when compared to his positional peers playing at a similar level.

Fellow Sunderland midfielder Dan Neil has lauded his teammate in the past, saying: “He’s an absolute freak of nature, physically. I have never seen a 17-year-old that size. Technically, he is a top, top, player as well.”

As such, it is exciting news that Tottenham could be in the race to sign Bellingham in the summer, and they should continue to monitor his performances between now and the end of the season.

Mayank Agarwal hits the reset button to focus firmly on Karnataka

New captain says India selection will take care of itself if he can score loads of Ranji Trophy runs like he did in 2017-18

Shashank Kishore12-Dec-20221:47

Big Ranji season for Sarfaraz, Malik, Kuldeep and Dhull

Mayank Agarwal isn’t focusing as much on a Test comeback as he is on emulating the kind of Ranji Trophy season he had in 2017-18, when he topped the charts with 1160 runs in 13 innings.Agarwal isn’t part of India’s Test tour of Bangladesh, having endured a slump in form over the past six months. This has coincided with Shubman Gill and Abhimanyu Easwaran doing everything they can to impress the selectors. Added to that is the fact that he’s also been released by his IPL franchise, Punjab Kings, whom he captained earlier this year.Related

Everything you need to know about Ranji Trophy 2022-23

It’s in the midst of all this that Agarwal has been handed Karnataka’s captaincy. The team reached the knockouts of both T20 and 50-overs competition. Now, he’s set to lead them in the Ranji Trophy, replacing his contemporary Manish Pandey, who was removed from the top job following a mediocre 2021-22 first-class season where Karnataka lost out in the quarter-finals.”I’ve been working on emulating what I did in 2017-18, when I had that good season,” Agarwal said in Bengaluru, ahead of Karnataka’s Ranji opener against Services on Tuesday. “I’ve gone back a little bit, looked at those videos, gone through those game plans and worked around that.”For me, that result or the end goal [India selection] will take care of itself. I want to look at my processes, areas I need to improve on and what I need to do to keep performing the way I was doing. And I back myself to deliver those performances.”Agarwal has a strong batting line-up to lean on, with all of R Samarth, Devdutt Padikkal and Pandey in the mix. The only notable absentee is Karun Nair, who has fallen out of favour with the selectors following a bad run of form that stretches back three seasons. However, there were times during the last campaign that he seemed to be rediscovering his touch again.Mayank Agarwal: There are no two ways about it. We want to win trophies for Karnataka•BCCI

The selectors have rewarded 22-year old Nikin Jose for his Vijay Hazare Trophy form – he was Karnataka’s leading run-getter, and Vishal Onat, who has had a stellar run in age-group cricket. One of them could well be handed a debut cap on Tuesday. As he takes over a young team in a transition, Agarwal is mindful of creating an environment similar to the one in 2013-14, when he broke through to make his first-class debut after years of being pigeon-holed as a white-ball player.”We have to keep encouraging them, create a good environment for them to flourish,” Agarwal said. “They’re in the team because of the performances they have put in age-group cricket. Nikin did very well in the Vijay Hazare as well. We want him to continue that form. As a team, we want to have an atmosphere where they can come, learn, execute and flourish, put up match-winning performances for Karnataka and play for the country.”I want to encourage them [youngsters], because they’ve put in performances. They’re skilled, they have the temperament and talent. We want to back them and help them learn. The environment we want to create in the team is one of wanting to win trophies, and we’re hungry for it.”The more we win and the more we enjoy each other’s success, that will come. Each of us has to be part of this environment, it’s not about one or two players coming in and creating that. If 20-25 of us create that, it will all stack up together. And when things stack up, results will take care of itself.”Karnataka last won the Ranji Trophy in 2014-15 and have stumbled in the knockouts for three seasons in a row. In 2018-19 and 2019-20, they lost in the semi-finals, to Saurashtra and Bengal respectively. Last season, they were upset in the quarter-final by Uttar Pradesh. Agarwal doesn’t want the team to be weighed down the baggage of being nearly men.”We’ve spoken of the legacy [of Karnataka cricket] and realised if we keep thinking off winning, winning, winning all the time, it’s not going to happen. That said, we’ve spoken of how hungry we are, but we also have to make a plan and be adaptable. Be disciplined. If we can do that, with the skillsets we have, the results will take care of itself. We are determined to win, there are no two ways about it. We want to win trophies for Karnataka.”

Nottingham Forest now activate £50m+ clause to sign new forward for Nuno

Nottingham Forest have triggered the release clause of a new exciting forward for Nuno Espírito Santo as they look to continue their strong Premier League campaign, according to an astonishing new report.

Can Forest lift the Premier League title?

After holding current Premier League leaders Liverpool to a 1-1 draw at the City Ground in midweek, Forest followed that result up with a 3-2 win over Southampton to maintain their strong form in England’s top tier.

Having narrowly avoided relegation last season, the Garibaldi now sit just six points off the top of the Premier League (albeit having played a game more than Liverpool) and are six points clear of Manchester City in fourth.

The form of Chris Wood has spearheaded their charge up the table, with the New Zealand international scoring his 14th goal of the season against the Saints to help them to their seventh win in their last eight games, form that has them in the mix for a shock Premier League title charge.

Neco Williams and Chris Wood

Speaking after the game, Elliot Anderson admitted that the City Ground side were just as concerned about the sides below them though, as they look to at least cement a spot in Europe for next season.

“We started really bright but made it hard for ourselves in the second half. Ultimately we got the three points and I’m really happy,” he explained.

“The manager said it’s always hard when you’ve got something to lose. We needed those three points because there are teams creeping up behind us.”

The club are expected to be active in January, with reports linking forward Taiwo Awoniyi with a move away from the City Ground and the club having already made clear their desire for a new striker last summer.

Now, a shock report has tipped Forest to splash the cash this winter in a bid to cement their newfound place among the Premier League elite.

Forest "trigger" £50m release clause

That is according to a report in Spain, which has claimed that Forest are one of three sides who have triggered the €60m (£50.7m) release clause in Villarreal star Alex Baena’s contract ahead of the second half of the January transfer window.

The Spaniard has long been linked with a move away from the Yellow Submarine, having cemented his reputation as one of the best creators in LaLiga. He is enjoying another fine season in Spain’s top flight, with the 23-year-old having managed four goals and five assists in 17 outings, while the “sublime playmaker” leads the division for expected assists, chances created and shot creating actions.

As per the report, all of Forest, Newcastle United and Bayern Munich have activated the player’s release clause this month in a bid to secure his services in the coming weeks, while Forest have “decided to go all out” on the Spaniard to try and complete the deal.

In truth, the report feels at the very least premature, with Forest and Newcastle in particular both under financial fair play scrutiny and unlikely to invest so heavily in one player this month, while a trio of clubs activating his release clause also seems far-fetched.

However, if Forest are indeed keen on signing Baena, then they will be getting one of the best creative forces in Europe as they look to make history this season.
