West Ham could let one of their highest-profile players leave with Paqueta

Another one of David Moyes' crop could "become one of the highest-profile players to quit West Ham" in the summer alongside the exit links surrounding Lucas Paqueta.

Clubs circle Paqueta for summer 2024 transfer

According to recent reports, Paqueta may well follow former captain Declan Rice out the door later this year as another marquee West Ham sale becomes more and more possible.

The Brazilian is currently subject to an investigation around gambling breaches, but once that clears, it is believed the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham and Man City have all made it clear they're interested in Paqueta (Claret & Hugh).

Last year, Man City were attempting to sign West Ham's star player but ultimately pulled the plug when he was accused of his betting charges.

"Following the recent betting-related allegations made against Lucas Paqueta, Manchester City are now internally discussing the Brazilian’s potential transfer," Fabrizio Romano wrote in his CaughtOffside substack last summer.

"The deal between Manchester City and West Ham is currently off. We can say that is 99% collapsed and we’re just waiting for the final communication, but this is the feeling. The situation is very clear."

City could be back in again for Paqueta later this year, alongside other big English clubs, but he isn't the only West Ham mainstay who could well depart this year.

High profile exit could follow Paqueta

According to journalist Pete O'Rourke, writing for Football Insider, that player may be defender Nayef Aguerd. The Morocco international, who's started 19 league games this season, is subject to interest from Saudi Arabia and it is believed his departure from Rush Green is a distinct possibility this summer.

Aguerd could be one of the "highest profile players" to leave West Ham, according to O'Rourke, and it is something the club could green-light despite "extensive speculation" surrounding Kurt Zouma's future as well.

The 27-year-old, who went to AFCON mid-season, has made some defensive errors in big games this season but was praised as one of the "best defenders in Europe" by former teammate Achraf Sidki.

“West Ham have signed one of the best defenders in Europe,” Sidki told The Athletic. “I’m so proud that one of my former teammates will be playing in the Premier League. I’m surprised he didn’t move to England sooner. When we were younger we both had big dreams of becoming professional footballers. Nayef has done well, and I’m confident he will be a great signing for West Ham."

It is unclear yet as to how much West Ham will demand for the North African's services, or if they have a replacement plan, but this could be one to watch.

Revealed: Dan Ashworth's deleted email to hide talks with Man Utd before he blamed Eddie Howe for Newcastle departure

Dan Ashworth reportedly deleted an email to keep his discussions with Manchester United private before he blamed Eddie Howe for his Newcastle exit.

  • Man Utd want Ashworth as sporting director
  • Newcastle have put him on gardening leave
  • Had deleted email to hide talks with Red Devils
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

According to in early February, Ashworth reportedly sent an email to Omar Berrada, the incoming United chief executive, expressing his interest in accepting the sporting director's role at Old Trafford. The situation escalated when Ashworth inadvertently sent a blind copy of the email to his Newcastle account. Realising his mistake, he quickly deleted the email, hoping to erase any evidence of the secret exchange. However, the email was discovered by Newcastle officials.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The discovery of the email could prompt a Premier League investigation if a formal complaint is lodged. Such a probe would examine whether Ashworth's actions constituted a breach of contract or any league regulations regarding "tapping up" – the illegal approach to players or staff without the current employer's consent.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

In an unexpected twist, Ashworth attempted to shift the blame for his exit onto Newcastle's head coach, Eddie Howe. He claimed that comments made by Howe during a press conference on February 16 made it difficult for him to continue with his role at St. James' Park. During the press conference, Howe expressed concerns about Ashworth having access to Newcastle's transfer plans and financial information amidst rumours of his potential defection to Manchester United. However, these comments were made a week after Ashworth's secret email to Berrada, suggesting that Ashworth's claim might have been a strategic move to justify his departure rather than a genuine grievance.

    WHAT NEXT?

Two days later after Howe's press conference, Ashworth formally informed Newcastle about an offer from the Red Devils. Subsequently, he was placed on gardening leave, a status that United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe suggested would extend until the end of 2025. Newcastle has indicated that they are waiting for an acceptable offer from the Manchester club to release Ashworth from his contract early.

Meanwhile, Ashworth has reportedly initiated arbitration proceedings against Newcastle, claiming that he was unjustly sacked. If the arbitration panel finds in his favour, it could facilitate his early move to United. Conversely, if Newcastle's stance is upheld, then United might have to pay a hefty transfer fee to get him onboard before the summer of 2025.

Gary Ballance furthers Ashes case though rain denies him shot at record

Gary Ballance’s chances of a century in six successive Yorkshire matches came to grief just before tea on the final day at Emerald Headingley with an unexpected cloudburst that prematurely ended a stalemate that had long since lost all other significance. That at least consigned one of Yorkshire’s more confusing statistics to history. Ballance is the first Yorkshire batsman to have scored hundreds in five successive Yorkshire matches, although Len Hutton did it on seven successive occasions in Yorkshire matches in 1947 and 1948.Such distinctions will not remotely concern Ballance, who was 51 not out when the deluge brought an early tea. His only ambition will be to extend a prolific Championship season, which has brought 668 runs at 83.5, to force his way into consideration for the Ashes series. If happenstance means James Vince gets an opportunity with England in the World Cup, and he makes runs, Ballance’s chances of adding to his 23 Tests, the last of them against South Africa in Nottingham, will further recede. One senses in any case that Ballance is out of vogue, to be ranked alongside avocado bathroom suites, lava lamps and hipster beards. He will have to play doubly well to get noticed.(Incidentally, the suggestion that hipster beards are out of fashion was a cruel misrepresentation and if any hipsters happened to have been drawn to a piece about an ultimately pointless county cricket match, one can assume they have already left in search of reassurance). From the moment on the third evening that Peter Siddle rose, half asleep, from a bench in the Essex dressing room, where he had been vaguely watching India’s World Cup match against South Africa, and roused himself to save the follow-on, this contest needed enterprise from both captains to salvage a worthwhile finish. But Siddle and Sam Cook blithely extended their last-wicket stand for a further 70 minutes, and those who had hoped for better began to stare staunchly into mid-distance. Championship spectators no longer religiously turn to the newspaper crossword to help them through the game’s longeurs (a shame because it was always an interesting clue to their political affiliations) and many remain allergic to mobile phones, especially during hours of play.In all, Siddle and Cook put on 86 in 25 overs, every run making the slim chance of a positive declaration increasingly starved of possibility. Siddle finished with 60 off 119 balls, his best score in his second season as Essex’s overseas player, at which point he fell leg-before to Steve Patterson, while Cook’s career-best unbeaten 37 off 74 included a pulled six off Ben Coad. When Yorkshire started their second innings, they led by 81 with 76 overs remaining in the day. Many sides have contrived finishes from such positions, but not often on such a sound surface, and not often Yorkshire.Andrew Gale, the coach, said with justification that the pitch had flattened out. Yorkshire remain unbeaten, and stable, but have yet to pull off the sort of thrilling result that identifies them as definite title contenders. Now 25 points behind leaders Somerset, they face Surrey at Guildford on Monday; the defending champions are yet to win in five matches.Yorkshire lost their debutant opener, Will Fraine, for a duck, but were on 107 for 1 from 42.5 overs when the rain tumbled from the sky. Essex’s main concern will surround the fitness of their seam bowler Jamie Porter, who is the catalyst for so many of their better moments, and who limped off during his 10th over.

Edu eyeing move for Amadou Onana as Arsenal look how he’d fit Arteta’s side

Arsenal are considering a move to sign a new central talisman who is already in the Premier League, according to a reliable journalist.

Arsenal's defensive midfielders

The Gunners have Jorginho, Mohamed Elneny and Thomas Partey as three of their natural options in defensive midfield as it stands, but there’s a strong possibility that all of the trio could be heading for the exit door, whether that be next month or later in the summer.

Mikel Arteta’s formerly mentioned pair will have both reached the expiration of their deals at the end of the season (Arsenal contracts), while the latter has been heavily linked with a departure having told the club that he wants to leave after attracting interest from Juventus.

Should Edu Gaspar lose any of the mentioned midfielders, the sporting director may have to enter the market to find some suitable replacements in that particular position, with Everton’s Amadou Onana having been highlighted as a potential candidate at the Emirates Stadium.

According to Sacha Tavolieri, Belgium’s international was on the radar of chiefs in the capital at the start of the year, and while a deal failed to come to fruition before the deadline in January, the 22-year-old could soon be the subject of another approach.

Arsenal keeping tabs on Onana

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Dean Jones revealed that Arsenal are interested in Onana and are "drawing up reports on how he would fit into" Arteta's side, though he’s unsure whether this is a move that they could afford at this moment in time. He said:

"A few Everton fans probably wanted to drive Onana to another club when he missed that penalty against Fulham in such miserable fashion but at the moment, as a club, they want to keep hold of him.

"At the end of the season, I do think there will be some potential for a transfer but when we directly assess his chances of joining Man United or Arsenal in January, the likelihood is slim.

"Of the two I would say Arsenal would be more realistic though, given they are having a genuine look at this area of the field and have been drawing up reports on how he would fit into their set-up. But I have major reservations on how much Arsenal can invest and if the bulk of any transfer pot would be spent on the midfield."

Everton midfielder Amadou Onana.

Onana is a "one-man army" in the centre

Standing at 6 foot 3, Onana provides a real physical presence and adds a different dimension to the centre of the park with his height where he’s currently averaging 2.4 aerial wins per game in the top flight, but he’s also capable of throwing himself into challenges (WhoScored – Onana statistics).

The Dakar native is recording the exact same number of tackles in each match as it stands, representing his desire to get stuck in to try and win back possession for his team, with his all-round style of play having seen him dubbed a “one-man army” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig.

At Everton, Onana will be used to playing Arsenal and he knows what it takes to grind out a result against them having secured a victory as part of the opposition (Transfermarkt – Onana stats), so if he’s capable of performing to this high level wearing an away shirt, imagine how much more he could improve under the guidance of Arteta.

Erik ten Hag admits Man Utd hit 'lowest point of the season' with Crystal Palace humiliation – but still insists he's the right man to take club forward

Erik ten Hag admitted that Manchester United hit the "lowest point of the season" after the 4-0 defeat to Crystal Palace but vowed to "keep fighting".

Man Utd humiliated at Selhurst ParkTen Hag took responsibility for the defeatBut also slammed players for "not following the plan"WHAT HAPPENED?

United suffered one of their worst defeats of the season at Selhurst Park, where Michael Olise stole the show with a remarkable two-goal display. Olise's brilliance, coupled with goals from Jean-Philippe Mateta and Tyrick Mitchell, compounded United's misery, with the 4-0 drubbing leaving them in eighth place in the Premier League standings and out of the European qualification spots. However, Ten Hag is still not ready to throw in the towel and insisted that he will give his all to turn around the fortunes of the club.

Advertisement(C)Getty ImagesWHAT TEN HAG SAID

In the aftermath of the defeat, when Ten Hag was asked if he was the right man for the job, he responded affirmatively, stating: "Absolutely. The right players are there. We have a good squad. I will keep fighting. I prepared the team in the best way I could. It was not good enough, it was by far not good enough. I have to take the responsibility for that. But I will find energy and I will prepare them for Sunday's game."

When further pressed if he thought the defeat was the lowest point of the season so far, he stated: "Yes. It was very poor how we gave the goals away, especially when we prepared the team and the conceding of the first goal is very disappointing. How easy and the easy giveaways. That shouldn't happen and certainly not in the circumstances we are in because we have problems but then we have to help each other out. It is very disappointing. Under-performing. Definitely the worst defeat."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Although Ten Hag took responsibility for the defeat, the Dutch manager believes that the players should also take their fair share of the blame as they made "big mistakes" and did not follow "the plan and the script."

"We should have done better," he said. "We are aware as a team performance, we were not correct, making big mistakes and not following the plan and the script. And the rules we have. Of course also individual mistakes, but then we should cover each other which we didn't do. We let each other down and then you get the worst defeat.

"This was the fourth defeat in 2024, so far, you have always seen a team that was following a script, we had a lot of wins and were hard to beat, and today we weren't hard to beat. Yes, I am sure they had the right intention, they were eager from the start, but once we were playing we didn't perform, individuals didn't perform and as a team, we didn't perform."

Wrexham to have more seats than Chelsea! Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney reveal unbelievable plans for SToK Cae Ras stadium

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have plans to make Wrexham's home stadium bigger than Stamford Bridge and Villa Park.

McElhenney teases SToK Cae Ras expansionStand by stands plans for improvementCapacity would top Premier League stadiumsWHAT HAPPENED?

McElhenney teased the possibility of Wrexham's SToK Cae Ras one day holding up to 50,000 fans, way up from its current capacity of 12,600, as each stand is systematically upgraded. It forms part of their wider vision for the long-term future of the club as they ultimately target the Premier League.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Renovation work at the stadium is already underway. The Kop Stand was torn down in January 2023, having been unused due to safety concerns since 2008. Plans for a new 5,500-seat stand, which would take overall capacity to around 16,000, were already approved in November 2022, but delays led to a smaller temporary stand being built that opened in December of last year. Council planners do not want it there long-term, citing low quality design features in a report earlier this month, and there could soon be restrictions and conditions as to how long it can stay up before having to be replaced by the permanent structure.

WHAT ROB McELHENNEY SAID

McElhenney told : "We have a plan in place right now that would eventually work from stand to stand, so eventually you get all four sides. It's hard to say for sure, butwe think we could get between 45,000 and 55,000 people in there."

With the use of four stands, Wrexham welcomed 12,532 fans for February's League Two win over Notts County, which was their biggest home attendance since 1980. That was later inflated to 12,562 on the final day of the season when newly crowned champions and firm rivals Stockport County were the visitors. An average attendance of 11,210 in 2023-24 season was bettered in League Two by only Bradford City (17,547) and came in higher than 18 clubs in League One.

“World-class” Casemiro has big offer on table to leave Man Utd in January

Manchester United could be set to lose one of their first-team stars next month, with a fresh report revealing that he’s received an offer to leave ahead of January.

Man United's summer departures

The Red Devils sanctioned the sales of 11 players during the previous window, with eight of those being on a permanent basis, while the remaining three were sent out on loan for the rest of the season in order to increase their experience and game time.

Dean Henderson (Crystal Palace)

Brandon Williams (Ipswich Town)

Anthony Elanga (Nottingham Forest)

Alvaro Fernandez (Granada CF)

Fred (Fenerbahce)

Mason Greenwood (Getafe)

Matej Kovar (Bayer Leverkusen)

Alex Telles (Al-Nassr)

Zidane Iqbal (FC Utrecht)

Eric Bailly (Besiktas)

Teden Mengi (Luton Town)

According to The Daily Mail, Erik ten Hag’s side are open to offers for Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial in the coming weeks, with the club’s football director, John Murtough, having travelled to Saudi Arabia to seek destinations for the out of favour players.

At Old Trafford, Casemiro is another squad member on that same list, with the defensive midfielder having made just eight appearances this season in the Premier League due to having missed the last nine games with a knock (Transfermarkt – Casemiro statistics).

The Brazil international has already attracted interest from Paris Saint-Germain, Al-Hilal and an unnamed club in the Serie A, but if the following update is to be believed, the 31-year-old has been given the chance to move onto new pastures in the coming weeks.

Casemiro gets Saudi Arabia proposal

According to Spanish outlet Marca (via Sport Witness), Casemiro has received an “important offer” from Saudi Arabia, but it’s not stated which club it has come from.

The Man United veteran has recently been considering a “change of scenery”, and with his new proposal coming with a “lot of money”, he could be tempted to accept the deal.

The M16 outfit would be looking to recoup at least part of the €70m (£60m) that they paid for the talisman when he joined from Real Madrid, so this could be one to keep a close eye on in the coming weeks.

Manchester United midfielder Casemiro.

Man United need to keep "world-class" Casemiro

As it stands, Casemiro currently ranks in the 99th percentile for blocks and the 97th percentile for clearances, showing that he’s not afraid to put his body on the line and get stuck in to clear the danger and regain possession for his team (FBRef – Casemiro statistics).

However, Ten Hag’s star is also capable of making a positive impact at the opposite end of the pitch having clocked up five involvements, four goals and one assist, from 12 appearances across all competitions since the start of the season.

As hailed by Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers, Casemiro is a “world-class” player and the club could be making a huge mistake if they were to sanction his sale next month, especially considering that he has been their best-performing defensive player this campaign (WhoScored – Man United statistics).

O jornal El Heraldo onde eu trabalhava me mandou para lá. Contra o Uruguai, aquele drible no goleiro, Pelé abre a perna e deixa ela passar. A bola vai pra fora. Eu tirei essa foto, mas na foto que eu tirei foi gol – contou Villagrán ao site GE.com
