USMNT star Brenden Aaronson compared to a 'bee' as Leeds explain big transfer call that could have impacted American playmaker

USMNT star Brenden Aaronson has been told that he is “like a bee”, with boundless energy presenting Leeds with an unexpected challenge.

The 24-year-old playmaker was absorbed back into the Elland Road ranks ahead of the 2024-25 campaign, having spent last season on loan at Union Berlin in Germany. He has started 28 straight Championship fixtures for the Whites, taking his goal tally for the season to eight along the way.

Aaronson has started to win over a sceptical fanbase in West Yorkshire, having initially jumped ship following relegation out of the Premier League in 2023, and is hoping to guide the ambitious club back into the big time.

WHAT DANIEL FARKE SAID

Aaronson is giving his all to that cause – so much so that Daniel Farke is having trouble reining him him. Leeds’ boss has said when asked if there is any threat of the United States international running out of gas: “Fatigue not, because Brenden can play each and every game. I have to stop him sometimes, he's like a bee. He’s so full of energy that you have to make sure energy does not come out of both of his ears and not be too hectic at times. Sometimes I have to make him relax a bit more. I’m never concerned about Brenden’s energy. It’s more like channelling his energy.

“What you can’t predict is there is always the possibility of booking suspensions – perhaps an offensive player like Brenden not so much – but also the possibility of injury. You can never guarantee [this won’t happen].”

Leeds had intended to address that issue during the winter transfer window, but Farke added on recruitment decisions that could have impacted Aaronson and his game time: “I spoke so openly about if there is a player with the right quality and a player who can give us another specialist in the No.10 position, we will do this [transfer]. But it’s not that easy to find that player in January who has those qualities and is also affordable. In the end, not all the boxes were ticked and for that yes, we go with what we've got.

“Of course we need a little bit of luck that [Aaronson] stays fit and in shape, with no injuries. If something happens we have players – perhaps not specialists – but who can shine in this role and even adapt in the way we play if we have to. My big wish is that Brenden stays in great shape and avoids injuries.”

Sarri has first Everton target in mind as Friedkin plots Dyche replacement

Although Sean Dyche eased any pressure by overseeing Everton’s first Premier League victory of the season against Crystal Palace last time out, new owners Friedkin Group may still turn to Maurizio Sarri, who already reportedly has one target in mind.

Everton transfer news

Confirming the sale of the club, a spokesperson for Friedkin told Everton’s official website: “We are pleased to have reached an agreement to become custodians of this iconic football club.

“We are focused on securing the necessary approvals to complete the transaction. We look forward to providing stability to the club, and sharing our vision for its future, including the completion of the new Everton Stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock.”

Their pending arrival has seemingly triggered the emergence of doubt over the future of Dyche, especially after Everton’s disappointing start to the campaign. The likes of Gareth Southgate has already been mentioned, but it’s Sarri who has found himself consistently linked with replacing the former Burnley boss. Reports at the end of last month even claimed that Dan Friedkin and Co were plotting a move to hire the Italian.

It looks as though those rumours aren’t going away anytime soon, either, with fresh headlines suggesting that the former Chelsea manager already has his first transfer target in mind. According to Inter Live, Sarri wants to bring Piotr Zielinski to Everton if he finds himself in the Goodison Park technical area.

Napoli midfielder Piotr Zielinski.

The 30-year-old midfielder spent the majority of his time at Napoli playing under Sarri and could now reunite with his old boss and end what has so far been a frustrating time at Inter, after not even a year since completing a move to San Siro.

In need of a starting place, Sarri’s potential move to Everton could work perfectly in Zielinski’s favour, finally resulting in a Premier League switch for the Poland international who has long been linked with Liverpool.

"Fantastic" Zielinski needs Sarri reunion

Now in the latter stages of his career, Zielinski needs a reunion with Sarri more so than ever before, given his recent struggles at Inter. And what better place to reunite than the Premier League and Goodison Park? If the Pole is looking for a starting place, then he should look no further than Merseyside and sitting alongside another former Napoli midfielder in Jesper Lindstrom.

Sarri, of course, is a big fan of the Inter midfielder, and was full of praise for him during their time together at Napoli. The Italian previously told reporters via Forza Italian Football: “He is an absolutely fantastic talent, with great physical and technical skills. If he grows as we expect him to, with his personality as well as his skills on the field, then he can play anywhere on the pitch. He will be the new De Bruyne.”

With that said, if Friedkin pulls the trigger on Dyche’s Everton tenure and in doing so turns towards Sarri, then Zielinski may well be one to watch when 2025 arrives.

Leeds can ease Gruev blow with loanee who scored a screamer for his country

Leeds United head coach Daniel Farke will currently be preparing to face off against Sheffield United at Elland Road in the Championship on Friday night.

The Whites went into the international break off the back of a 2-2 draw with Sunderland at the Stadium of Light and will now be looking to bounce back to winning ways against the Blades.

Farke will still be without his two first-choice central midfielders, however, as Ilia Gruev and Ethan Ampadu are long-term absentees with knee injuries.

It was recently revealed by Bulgaria boss Ilian Iliev that the former is due to be out of action until the March international break, which is a significant blow for Leeds.

Why losing Ilia Gruev is a blow

Being without the former Werder Bremen man until March is a big blow for the Whites because it stretches beyond the January transfer window and leaves them in a difficult position.

If they do not find a free agent who suits what they want, it would be hard to commit to a signing to fill the void in January as it would have to be a player who would know that their game time could then be limited once Gruev returns to fitness in March.

The 24-year-old midfielder made 29 appearances in the Championship last season, completing 92% of his attempted passes and making 2.5 tackles and interceptions per game.

Gruev also completed 90% of his attempted passes and made 3.6 tackles and interceptions per match across eight outings in the league this season before his knee injury.

The player Leeds should recall

Farke could ease the blow of losing Gruev by recalling youngster Darko Gyabi from his loan spell with Plymouth Argyle in the Championship.

Should they have the option to do so, the Whites must bring the England U20 international, who scored a stunning goal for his country against Italy’s U20s last week, back to Elland Road in January.

He took the ball in 30 yards out and dribbled a few yards before unleashing a scorching effort into the back of the net from long range to draw England level, in a game they went on to win 2-1.

Gyabi has also caught the eye with his performances for Wayne Rooney’s side in the Championship this season, and could provide the calmness in possession and combative nature out of possession that Gruev offered.

As you can see in the table above, both players create chances for their teammates whilst being reliable on the ball, albeit the Bulgaria international is not as loose with his passing.

Gyabi, though, appears to offer more of a physical presence in the middle of the park, winning more duels and a higher percentage of his battles each game.

The 20-year-old could, therefore, come in as a dream replacement for Gruev in the second half of the season, as a player who knows the club and has now proven himself in the division, which is why Farke should attempt to recall him.

Development: Big new Erol Bulut sack update emerges from Cardiff City

One reporter has now provided a big new update regarding Cardiff City and the future of manager Erol Bulut.

Cardiff City’s results so far

It has been a season to forget for the Bluebirds so far in the Championship, who currently find themselves winless after five second-tier games, scoring just once against rivals Swansea City.

Derby County 1-0 Cardiff City

14th September

Cardiff City 0-2 Middlesbrough

31st August

Swansea City 1-1 Cardiff City

25th August

Burnley 5-0 Cardiff City

17th August

Cardiff City 0-2 Sunderland

10th August

As a result, they find themselves bottom of the table on just one point, which has led to plenty of speculation regarding Bulut’s position. The manager didn’t even face the media following Cardiff’s 1-0 defeat to Derby County last time out, with rumours in recent days claiming the club could be about to make a change.

Things don’t get any easier next up, either, with the Bluebirds hosting Leeds United on Saturday afternoon, and by the looks of things, Bulut is unlikely to be in the dugout for that fixture.

Cardiff City ready to sack Erol Bulut

According to Football Insider reporter Pete O’Rourke, Cardiff City are ready and even preparing to sack Bulut this week. It is stated that the 49-year-old has ‘lost the dressing room at the Cardiff City Stadium’ and as a result, I expected to become the third Championship manager to depart after Ryan Lowe and Steven Schumacher leaving Preston North End and Stoke City respectively.

Bulut was set to be out of contract back in the summer but after months of talks, signed a new deal back in June. Those fresh terms were until the end of the 2025/26 season, so Cardiff will now seemingly have to pay the former Fenerbahce boss off.

Talking after putting pen to paper on his new deal, Bulut said: “I’m very proud and happy to be extending my time with you all here in the capital city of Wales. It is a privilege to be part of your family.”

However, things have changed extremely quickly and it looks as if the Bluebirds will soon be on the search for a new permanent manager in the coming days. WalesOnline reporter Paul Abbandonato recently called for a change in style to “get the fans excited”, saying:

“It’s blindingly obvious Bulut is a naturally cautious manager, but the shackles simply have to come off. No-one is asking for him to suddenly morph into Mario Zalago and Brazil 1970, nor for a return to Warnockball, but is there really any harm in getting the ball forward more quickly and then trying to run beyond defences with skill, pace and vigour in the final third.

“Get the fans excited. Put an end to this boring sideways, backwards, sideways again, ponderous approach which enables opposition defences to re-set and to me seems passing without a purpose at times. When Bulut signed his contract during the summer, amid a plethora of new signings, many were delighted. Yes there were gaps, but with a glut of gifted Academy players he’d fast-tracked through to back up the senior pros, plus the return of three more, Issak Davies, Eli King and Joel Bagan as better players from loan spells away, there were plenty of reasons for optimism.

“I was told there would be a more adventurous approach. It would take some major mismanagement to get this wrong.”

Whether that’s with or without Bulut remains to be seen, but following the update from O’Rourke, his days appear to be numbered.

Trent Boult available for second Test, Williamson's elbow to be monitored

New Zealand spin-bowling allrounder Mitchell Santner has been sidelined from the Edgbaston Test with a finger injury. His captain Kane Williamson is under an injury cloud, having sustained an elbow niggle ahead of the second Test, which starts on June 10. New Zealand head coach Gary Stead said that the team management would take the final call on Williamson on the eve of the match.Trent Boult, their premier seamer, however, has been lined up for a Test return after having linked up with the squad for his first training of the tour at Lord’s on Saturday. Boult also trained with the group at Edgbaston two days out of the second Test.Santner had suffered a cut to his spinning finger during the intra-squad match, in the approach to the tour, and then aggravated his injury by playing the first Test at Lord’s. Santner, who was the only frontline spinner in either team in the opening Test, had gone wicketless in 23 overs, conceding 68 runs. He served up eight full-tosses in that game, including a chest-high beamer, according to ESPNcricinfo’s ball-by-ball data, giving up 16 runs. Stead conceded that the cut to Santner’s left index finger disrupted his rhythm.”People probably would have seen him open up the piece on his finger again; he had quite a bit of blood on his pants,” Stead said of Santner. “That came from the cut he originally had. We thought it had healed okay, but obviously we needed a little bit more time for that to happen and it definitely hampered his ability in the match as well.”New Zealand have two other left-arm fingerspinners in their squad to replace Santner – Ajaz Patel and Rachin Ravindra. Patel, himself, is working his way back into international cricket after a calf injury; he had last played Test cricket in February 2020. Ravindra, the Wellington batting allrounder, meanwhile, is uncapped in international cricket. As for Williamson, this isn’t the first time this year that he’s dealing with an elbow complaint. He had earlier been ruled out of the ODI series against Bangladesh at home and subsequently missed the start of IPL 2021.”His [Williamson’s] elbow is still niggling him a wee bit,” Stead said. “We’ve had some more treatment on that and we just want to make sure it’s the best thing for him, playing in this match versus taking a bit more time to be ready and training the way he needs to train.”Mitchell Santner is nursing a finger injury•Getty Images

Stead, though, welcomed Boult back into the set-up, all but confirming his comeback. After the IPL was suspended, the left-arm seamer opted to return home to spend time with his family in Mount Maunganui rather than head straight to the UK along with the rest of the New Zealand contingent. Before the Lord’s Test, Stead had indicated the turnaround for Edgbaston would be too tight for Boult but updated quarantine protocols have allowed him to train immediately after arriving which has advanced his preparations by a few days.”Trent’s back and available to be selected and it’s likely we’ll play him in this game as well,” he said. “It’s good news for us. Things did change when he got here or from the information we had initially. So, think it’s the best thing for Trent to get out there, get the Dukes ball in his hand and show us what he’s capable of.”With an eye on the forthcoming World Test Championship [WTC] final against India, which begins on June 18 at the Ageas Bowl, Stead reckoned that the rest of the attack could also be rotated. Tim Southee, Neil Wagner and Kyle Jamieson all had solid workouts at Lord’s, bowling 40 or more overs each across both innings, despite the entire third day’s play being wiped out by a persistent drizzle. Matt Henry, Doug Bracewell and Southland’s Jacob Duffy, who is also uncapped, are the potential seam-bowling replacements for the frontline quicks. Stead said that they would lock in their XI on Wednesday.”They [bowlers] have all scrubbed up pretty well, but it doesn’t necessarily mean they will play in the next match,” Stead said. “With an eye to the [WTC] final we want to make sure the key bowlers who we think will take part in that game are fresh, raring to go and ready for that first ball of the match versus India.”We’ve got a squad of 20 obviously. So, a lot of guys have played Test cricket before. Matt Henry is here, Daryl Mitchell is here, Doug Bracewell, Ajaz Patel…there’re guys in and around the squad who’ve played for us in the past. So, again, we’re having those discussions with them about what’s best for them given training loads, playing loads and readiness for that match.”
