India eye semis, Bangladesh fight

India will want to forget off-field worries, Bangladesh will want to bring them onto the field. India can seal the semi-final spot if West Indies and India win their matches on Friday

Crowe: India need a tough game

March 28, 2014
Start time 1930 local (1330 GMT)Big pictureSimilarities between last year’s Champions Trophy and this World T20 were a thought before the tournament began, but two India matches later it seems this is exactly identical. Even as India have – against whatever trends you can develop in Twenty20 games – done extremely well, in two days the Supreme Court of India has turned the heat on the Indian cricket administration. This time last year MS Dhoni had a series of question marks against him through his involvement with India Cements, whose managing director had saved his job, but he managed to ward away all evil with a stunning Champions Trophy win. The questions are back, this time with much more force, as a day before India’s third match in World T20 the Supreme Court heard from prosecution that Dhoni had lied under oath in trying to maintain distance between Chennai Super Kings and Guruanth Meiyappan, who used team information for illegal betting.Questions aplenty for MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh•Associated Press

On the field, though, two exceptional days with the ball have made sure India are within striking distance of progression to the semi-finals. In fact, even before they start their third match – never mind more wrath of the court anticipated in the morning – if West Indies beat Australia in the afternoon, India will be all but through to the next round. All they will need to do after that is beat Bangladesh, who will be desperate to prove that phrases such as “all the opposition has to do” are not used in the same sentence as “beat Bangladesh”.After getting the hopes of the home crowds up by beating Afghanistan emphatically, the hosts have brought much pain to the crowds by losing to Hong Kong and tamely so to West Indies. In four matches, not a single batsman has batted long enough to score a fifty, catches have been dropped regularly, and ground fielding has been poor. You cannot expect to win playing in that manner. Bangladesh once compounded India’s off-field misery when they beat them in the World Cup in 2007 to bring to an end the controversial tenure of Greg Chappell. If they are to do something similar here, we will need a team unrecognisable from the one that has taken the field in the last two matches.Form guide (most recent first)Bangladesh LLWWL
India WWWWLWatch out forThese are times when you look for talismans. Bangladesh’s for a long time has been Shakib Al Hasan. Since the last World T20, he has averaged 37.33 with the bat and 8.50 with the ball. Bangladesh will need him to carry them if tables are to be turned. The heat is on on Yuvraj Singh, who dropped another catch and gave India a few nervous moments with his 19-ball 10 in an otherwise easy chase against West Indies. He has enjoyed the confidence of his captain and his team-mates, but does the rope run long enough to survive another failure?Team newsNasir Hossain is likely to come back after his axing failed to improve the general batting standards, but Mahmudullah could keep his place despite two dropped catches against West Indies. Shamsur Rahman is likely to play too. Mashrafe Mortaza did the pre-match press conference, but as always his place in the team can’t be confirmed till the last minute due to his side strain and rib injury.Bangladesh 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Anamul Haque, 3 Mominul Haque, 4 Shakib Al Hasan, 5 Mushfiqur Rahim (capt. & wk), 6 Shamsur Rahman/Sabbir Rahman, 7 Nasir Hossain/Mahmudullah, 8 Ziaur Rahman, 9 Sohag Gazi, 10 Mashrafe Mortaza, 11 Al-Amin HossainIndia have no pressing reason to make a change now that they have shown confidence in Yuvraj in public.India (possible) 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 Rohit Sharma, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Suresh Raina, 5 Yuvraj Singh, 6 MS Dhoni (capt. & wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Amit Mishra, 10 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 11 Mohammed ShamiStats and trivia Yuvraj Singh is the only Indian to have won more than two Man-of-the-Match awards. In just three appearances for India, Amit Mishra has joined five other Indians on two match awards. Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s figures of 3-0-3-0 were the joint-most economical for three or more overs in a Twenty20 international. Take out Zimbabwe, and West Indies are the only big-time team that Bangladesh have beaten in T20Is.Quotes”We lost the two games pretty disappointingly. We want to play well, fight as much as we can. We will play to win for sure, but above everything else, we have to start well.”
“First priority is to win the match and get the [net] run-rate aspect out of the equation. If we win, net run-rate will be automatically taken care of.”

Mills finally fires for Essex

There were no England selectors in Chelmsford but reports of Tymal Mills performance will likely have reached the interested parties

There were no England selectors in Chelmsford but reports of Tymal Mills performance will likely have reached the interested parties. The left-arm quick, whose searing pace at times seems to frazzle his own synapses, claimed 3 for 29 to push Essex closer to a hard-fought victory in their opening Championship match of the season. In the first innings, Derbyshire’s last five wickets fell for 13 runs and Essex will be favourites to complete the job on the final day having set a testing target of 366. Shivnarine Chanderpaul, cricket’s equivalent of a roadblock, was unbeaten on 41 at the close but the home bowlers will prepare to veer around him again. The first session and a half of the match aside, when they were bowled out for 94, Essex have performed with the skill and bite to match the abundant talent in their squad. If Alastair Cook, who extended his stay to 181 from 335 balls in a little over seven hours, is very much England present, then conceivably it was England past and future who were central to Essex’s efforts with the ball. Monty Panesar may still have an international career to resurrect, while Mills has amassed an army of boosters who would like to give him a Mitchell Johnson wig and stick-on moustache and they provided the main threat as Derbyshire fought to stay in the game.Panesar made the first incision, when Stephen Moore toe-ended a pull low to midwicket, but he needed a talking to from the umpires after seeming to direct a few words towards Billy Godleman at the non-striker’s end. Panesar was last season given a suspended ban for “potentially threatening and intimidating” behaviour during a match on loan for Essex against Worcestershire and, if he is to remain in England contention, would prefer the scrutiny to be on his bowling. There was a tangible edge to proceedings, with Godleman the subject of much chatter from his former team-mates, before Mills made the ball do the talking. He had Wayne Madsen caught off the glove down the leg side via a brute of a lifter and then pinned Godleman lbw during a seven-over spell that straddled the tea break. He returned to trap Chesney Hughes lbw as well, following a well-directed short ball with one that was pitched up, though the low bounce and some ponderous footwork took their share of the credit. It is almost a contractual obligation to refer to Mills as raw and undeniably there is a capacity for the erratic. One delivery, way down the leg side to Chanderpaul, managed to bounce two or three times before reaching James Foster, while Wes Durston was greeted by a throat-high beamer first ball. However, his losses of control were the exception rather than the norm and his pace tested everyone at the crease, with Chanderpaul lucky to survive a hurried pull to mid-on that Graham Napier couldn’t quite get his hands underneath.”That’s probably the best I’ve seen him bowl in the Championship for us,” Foster said. “He bowled very quick, very hostile, got the ball to move in the air. He was very aggressive and that’s what Tymal Mills is all about. He’s an exceptional talent and I’m really pleased for him because he has worked his backside off.”Derbyshire had already made use of the heavy roller before their first innings – each team can do so only once, providing the home side has made it available, under the new rules – and the presence of some rough outside the right-handers’ off stump for Panesar to aim at from the River End along with a little variable bounce should provide enough encouragement for Essex. Foster admitted his side were “in the pound seats” but was cautious of calling a game that has seen several shifts in momentum.Fifteen wickets fell on the first day and the first two innings only required 101 overs to be bowled. Cook outlasted that on his own second time around, as the flat pitch Keith Fletcher had spied from his perch in the third umpire’s box finally rolled over to have its tummy tickled. It was a day for ice cream and sun cream, while Cook continued on in a manner that for Essex and England was all peaches and cream.Having scored his first hundred in five months – and only his second since May last year – Cook resumed his innings with the intent of a man returning for the fourth and fifth course at dinner after popping out for a cigar. Stretching back to the previous evening, he managed to go 27 overs without scoring a boundary, during which time he progressed from 127 to 152. Reasoning that there was plenty of room left in the game and accompanied by the coltish Ben Foakes and an ever-busy Foster, Cook continued to hoard time in the middle.Should his new daughter have any trouble sleeping, a video of one of Cook’s longer knocks, however invaluable, might do the trick. A top-edged sweep off Durston before lunch hinted at a desire for greater productivity, however, and he was dismissed by the spin of David Wainwright two balls after the interval, playing across the line and getting a leading edge back to the bowler.

Bell stars after Chapple's landmark

Glen Chapple reached 900 first-class wickets for Lancashire but it was the craft of Ian Bell that stood out at Old Trafford

Forget, for a moment, that Ian Bell plays for England. County cricket is relevant in its own right, not merely as some sort of massive academy for the national side. It is perfectly possible to consider Bell’s fine 75 on the second day of the game against Lancashire simply in the context of this match and not as some sort of preparation for future examinations.Coming to the wicket with his team well-placed on 144 for 2, Bell made a substantial contribution to his side taking a 69-run lead with one wicket left to fall in this well-contested match. In doing so, he produced a gem of an innings, a 162-ball master-class generously sprinkled with fine shots in both defence and attack.Michael Henderson once wrote about the aesthetic satisfaction to be derived from watching Mark Ramprakash play a forward defensive shot, and it is possible to be similarly enriched by some of Bell’s strokeplay. There were fine drives aplenty and a trademark six over long-on off Simon Kerrigan, but there were also carefully calibrated pushes and deflections, each of them enjoyable in its own right as a tiny piece of craftsmanship. At such moments it was not only possible to forget that Bell plays Test cricket; one could also forget the little matter of his allegiance, and simply savour the artistry. It is important to remember Bell’s innings because, by the end of the day, his effort had been a trifle overshadowed by an excellent response from Lancashire’s seamers, who took five wickets for 47 runs in ten overs in the final session and keep Warwickshire’s lead within the realm of the manageable. That fightback was led by Tom Smith, who had both Tim Ambrose and Chris Woakes caught behind by Buttler in successive overs and finished the day with 4 for 67. Wayne White’s contribution in bringing one back off the seam to uproot Bell’s leg stump and then having Jeetan Patel caught at the wicket was also invaluable. By the end of the day Lancashire’s players could anticipate a parity which had seemed rather unlikely in the first two sessions of play. For himself, Bell, who is currently Warwickshire’s stand-in captain, would certainly place his own innings in the context of the game and pay tribute to the work of openers Varun Chopra and William Porterfield, whose 127-run partnership for the first wicket laid secure groundwork for the construction of their sizeable total. The openers had more than doubled their side’s overnight score when Porterfield rather gave his innings away by driving Kerrigan loosely to Wayne White at mid-off. This was a shame, not least because he had played well, especially when dismissively pulling James Anderson into a building site for six.Following Porterfield’s departure for 77, his first Championship fifty since May 2012, Chopra made his way carefully towards lunch and had very nearly achieved his immediate objective when trapped on the crease by Chapple for 52.That, as both players and the public address announcer Matt Procter recognised, was Chapple’s 900th first-class wicket for Lancashire. He became the 15th Lancastrian to achieve the feat, the first of any type to do so since Jack Simmons and the first seamer since Ken Higgs.By the end of the day Chapple’s tally was 901, meaning that he had equalled the total achieved by left-arm spinner Cecil Parkin, a clown-prince of a bowler who used to croon the 1920s favourites Tea for Two or Lily of Laguna as he made his way back to his mark. One rather doubts that Chapple sings at all as he trudges through his fine spells; were he to do so, though one certainly can’t believe that they would be much like the genial ditties beloved of dear old Cec.

IPL final to stay in Bangalore

The IPL final on June 1 will stay in Bangalore as scheduled after the BCCI declined the Mumbai Cricket Association’s request to reinstate the match at the Wankhede Stadium

The IPL final on June 1 will stay in Bangalore as scheduled after the BCCI declined the Mumbai Cricket Association’s request to reinstate the match at the Wankhede Stadium. The IPL governing council had declined the request following a meeting on Saturday night.”The governing council considered the MCA’s request but decided to stick to the original decision to move the final from Mumbai to Bangalore,” BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel told ESPNcricinfo.MCA joint secretary Nitin Dalal expressed disappointment over the decision. “So far, the MCA hasn’t been informed anything officially. But if they (BCCI) have made the decision (to stick to Bangalore), then it’s absolutely disappointing both for the MCA and more importantly for the cricket fans of Mumbai. The MCA had assured the IPL of making all the necessary arrangements well in time for the final.”The drama started a day after the IPL governing council moved the final from the Wankhede Stadium to the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore, thus breaking the tradition of letting the home ground of previous year’s champion team host the final. The decision sparked protests the MCA, with its president Sharad Pawar asking for reasons for the switch. Two days after the IPL chairman Ranjib Biswal responded, the MCA managing committee decided to accept all the “conditions” put forth by the IPL in a bid to regain the final.Interestingly, Biswal said he had never put any riders for the final to be shifted back to Mumbai. The MCA managing committee, it is understood, interpreted Biswal’s reply as if its content had referred to conditions. The MCA therefore formally requested the IPL to reinstate the final to Wankhede since it had formally agreed to all the conditions it believed had been put in place by the IPL chairman.
