Saeed Ajmal’s 7 for 55 are his best figures in Test cricket, and his fifth five-for in 18 Tests. Against England, he has 19 from four Tests at 21.47.

Since the beginning of 2011, Ajmal has taken 57 wickets at 21.89.

Five of Ajmal’s victims were out lbw, which equals the record for most lbws for a bowler in a Test innings. Five others have achieved this: Terry Alderman versus Pakistan, Curtly Ambrose against England, Mohammad Zahid against New Zealand, Richard Johnson versus Zimbabwe, and Monty Panesar against West Indies. The last time England were five down for less than 43 in the first innings of a Test match was way back in 1999, when they were 34 for 5 in Johannesburg. England lost that Test by an innings and 21 runs.

Matt Prior’s unbeaten 70 is his third fifty-plus score in seven Test innings against Pakistan, and lifts his average against them to 76.

Ian Bell was dismissed without scoring for the ninth time in his Test career, and for the second time off the first ball.

Saeed Ajmal took seven wickets for the first time in his Pakistan career as England capitulated in the first Test in Dubai. There was limited turn for Ajmal on a sound batting surface, but his beguiling mix of offspinners and doosras drove England to distraction as they were dismissed by the 73rd over to leave Pakistan firmly in command.England lost their first seven wickets for 94 and matters would have been much worse without a robust response by Matt Prior, who looked the most decisive of their batsmen from the outset and, with eight down, counterattacked against the spinners before running out of partners.Pakistan, who batted in untroubled fashion for 15 overs in reply, would have been highly satisfied. They are careful not to describe the UAE as home, but it is fast becoming a favourite refuge. They enjoyed a jubilant first morning, claiming five wickets on a placid batting surface, and Ajmal made further inroads in the last two sessions to ensure that England’s first outing as the No. 1 ranked Test side in the world began disastrously. When Ajmal unveiled his new mystery ball, the teesra, midway through the afternoon session, it proved to be an initial disappointment, a slingy, round-arm affair that Stuart Broad stoutly blocked. But he did not need a mystery ball. To England they were all mystery balls. When England first encountered Ajmal, at Edgbaston 17 months ago, he took five wickets before they gradually worked him out as the series progressed. They will need to learn quickly again. The battle between Ajmal and Swann, contenders as the best offspinner in the world, could be pivotal. He was the last Pakistan bowler to be introduced into the attack, but after ten deliveries he had had figures of 3 for 1, removing Andrew Strauss, Ian Bell and Kevin Pietersen. England summoned comparative resistance from then on, but Ajmal removed Morgan and Stuart Broad, both lbw sweeping, before tea. Two further lbw verdicts – Chris Tremlett outdone by an excellent doosra – completed the job. For England, only Swann matched Prior’s purpose.England won the toss, the pace of the pitch was gentle, there was no swing or seam, and just a hint of turn. However, just about everything attempted by Pakistan’s impressive captain, Misbah-ul-Haq, came off as the cream of England batting disappeared in the first two hours. There had been concerns about how England, who moved to No. 1 with high-adrenalin performances in front of packed crowds, would respond to the dead air of a virtually empty stadium, especially as their record in Asia is so mediocre – Bangladesh apart they have not won in their last seven Test series on the subcontinent. Those doubts are now apparent to all.Mohammad Hafeez’s offspin was introduced in the sixth over to counter England’s left-hand openers and he dismissed Alastair Cook in his first over. Cook attempted to work his first ball into the leg side and got a thick outside edge through point. Then Hafeez found gentle turn with his third delivery and Cook edged obligingly to the wicketkeeper.Pakistan had opted for three spinners; England stuck to their successful formula of Graeme Swann’s offspin supported by three fast bowlers. It was not long before England looked in denial.Jonathan Trott was the one batsman to fall to pace, the bustling pace provided by Aizaz Cheema. His new-ball spell was curtailed to two overs, but Trott found him a handful on his return. A walking clip to the square-leg boundary represented England’s most authoritative moment of the session, but he edged successive boundaries, the second of them flying over leg stump off the inside edge. Trott fell in Cheema’s next over, strangled down the leg side as the bowler banged one in.Ajmal struck with his sixth, seventh and tenth deliveries. Strauss had batted 42 balls for 19 when he misread the length, tried to pull a ball that was too far up to him, and was bowled.Bell came in with his wrist heavily strapped, courtesy of a blow in the nets the previous day while batting against the dog-thrower used by the England batting coach, Graham Gooch. He was met by a perfect doosra from Ajmal, which he edged to give the bowler his third wicket of the morning. Bell did not appear to read it but, first ball at the start of a new series, reading Ulysses would have been easier.Bell then departed for a long conversation with Gooch, who exchanged dog-thrower for any bone of consolation that he could toss his way.Misbah had begun by taunting Pietersen with left-arm spin, his nemesis, in the shape of Abdur Rehman. He survived against Rehman, but not Ajmal. Pietersen played slightly across the ball and was hit on the front pad, just outside the crease. Bruce Oxenford, the Australian umpire, was unconvinced but the wicketkeeper gestured excitedly for the DRS and his judgment was well founded, the replay suggesting that the ball would have struck halfway up leg stump.Morgan, more content than many against spin, was lbw to the slog-sweep, a decision by the Australian umpire Bruce Oxenford that was upheld by the third umpire after England, logically enough at 82 for 5, opted for the DRS. It was a weaker paddle-sweep that did for Broad, who rarely believes he is out, and who also asked for a review; but again television evidence ruled in the umpire’s favour.Only when Swann came to the crease did England play with adventure, a mood that Prior adopted after Abdur Rehman made one turn to strike Swann’s off stump. Umar Gul had wasted a Pakistan review in the last over before tea as he demanded a DRS verdict against Swann that had no hope of success. But that was Pakistan’s only moment of unprofessionalism in a calm and disciplined performance. Pakistan’s jubilation was almost complete.

NCA to hold open trials in four Indian states

The National Cricket Academy (NCA) will hold open trials for bowlers across four states in India, marking the first time it is giving people outside the system an opportunity to earn a place in the academy

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Feb-2012Details of bowling trials

Himachal Pradesh: 18 and 19 Feb – Dharamsala

Jammu & Kashmir: 22 Feb and 23 Feb – Jammu

Jharkhand: 25 Feb and 26 Feb – Ranchi

Chhattisgarh: 28 Feb and 29 Feb 2012 – Raipur

The National Cricket Academy (NCA) will hold open trials for bowlers across four states in India, marking the first time it is giving young cricketers from outside the system an opportunity to earn a place in the academy. The NCA, established in 2000, has until now only included cricketers playing the BCCI’s age-level domestic tournaments. Over the next few weeks, it will hold trials for fast bowlers and spinners in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kasmir, all states that are not traditionally cricketing strongholds.Boys between the age of 17 and 22, who have not played in any BCCI-run tournament, will be eligible to attend the trials. Karsan Ghavri, bowling coach at the specialised fast-bowling academy in Chandigarh, and Yoginder Puri, former Himachal Pradesh medium-pacer, will supervise the trials and shortlist the bowlers for the NCA.”The BCCI decided to find some young talent and I am sure we will definitely do some justice, and try and get some good young boys,” Ghavri told ESPNcricinfo. He pointed out that their aim was to search for players who, despite never having played in a board-level tournament, “still have the strength and inclination to bowl quick or become a good spin bowler.”The decision was taken at the BCCI working committee meeting in Chennai. The trials come in the wake of India’s successive series 0-4 Test series losses in England and Australia. India will also have a new bowling coach after the Australia tour, with Joe Dawes replacing Eric Simons. In late December, BCCI secretary Sanjay Jagdale had asked the five-man national selection panel to immediately pick a pool of fast bowlers that would act as bench-strength for the Indian team. The pool was to comprise players from India’s state teams as well as Under-19 bowlers. The idea was based on a recommendation from Anil Kumble, before he resigned as NCA chairman in December. Some of the other decisions aimed at improving Indian cricket, made at the BCCI working committee meeting, were to have India A and Under-19 tours to England, Australia, South Africa and West Indies; to found a new academy in Bangalore; and to use neutral venues for all Ranji Trophy matches.

The Victoria batsman Rob Quiney has been rewarded for two strong seasons by being named Australia’s Domestic Player of the Year at the Allan Border Medal night in Melbourne. And Australia’s occasional vice-captain David Warner has taken home the Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year title, a surprise only in that he was even eligible for the prize, which has typically been handed to a player still establishing himself. But the major state award went to Quiney, 29, who must be starting to feature in discussions at the national selection table having become a consistent performer for Victoria and the Melbourne Stars. During the voting period, which ran from February 9 last year until February 11 this year, Quiney was easily the leading scorer across all formats, with 1640 runs at 44.32, ahead of the second-placed Marcus North with 1337 runs.James Faulkner was the leading wicket taker during the same time-frame, with 71 victims at 24.62, and he finished second to Quiney in the polling, a system in which all contracted players cast a vote to judge the best players across all three domestic formats. Quiney received 52% of the vote, well ahead of Faulkner on 12% and the third-placed Matthew Wade on 10%.Quiney is second only to Liam Davis on the Sheffield Shield run tally this summer, with 750 runs at an average of 50, and he also finished second in the Shield last season, to Mark Cosgrove. He was also among the top ten run scorers during the Ryobi Cup and the Big Bash League this season and his consistency across all formats has been impressive.Quiney is the first man to take the domestic award while playing the full qualifying period for Victoria – the batsman Michael Klinger won in 2009 having switched from Victoria to South Australia mid-year. Victoria also provided the runner-up in the Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year award this season, with James Pattinson gaining 20% of the votes behind Warner’s 29%. The Redbacks batsman Tom Cooper was third with 16%.To win the award, a player must be aged 24 or younger at the beginning the voting period – Warner turned 25 in October. Players also need to have appeared in fewer than 10 first-class matches at the start of the voting period. Warner had played four, and after his rapid rise into the Test side it is easy to forget that he was not a regular in the New South Wales Shield team until the end of last summer.Across all formats, Warner was a clear front-runner in the run tally among contenders, with 1587 runs at an average of 69, while the second-placed Glenn Maxwell made 971. The leading wicket takers were Faulkner and Nathan Coulter-Nile, but the popular vote allowed Pattinson to swoop past them into second place. For the fourth consecutive year, Shelley Nitschke was named the Women’s International Player of the Year, a feat made all the more remarkable because she retired seven months ago. Nitschke, 35, stepped down last July but the lopsided schedule meant she still played 13 of the 19 completed matches during the voting period.Across ODI and T20 internationals, Nitschke scored 285 runs and collected 21 wickets, and she picked up the prize with 33 votes ahead of Lisa Sthalekar’s 31 votes. Alex Blackwell finished third with 26 votes.

Yorkshire scrap on tough first day against Kent

Kent reached 345 for 5 at the close as Yorkshire were made to work hard for their wickets on the first day of the Championship

If Geoffrey Boycott, Yorkshire’s newly elected president, was studying the scores at Headingley on the opening day of the season during the early hours from his hotel in Colombo, he could have been forgiven for believing his beloved county had suffered a dismal start to their campaign.Tipped as one of the Division Two promotion candidates, they lost the toss and despite the ground being under snow and ice 24 hours previously, failed to claim a wicket for 37 overs. They finished the opening day with only five wickets to their name against a strong Kent line-up including six winter recruits.Even the most optimistic of Yorkshire supporters would struggle to suggest it was a good day but it was by no means disastrous and, having had little help from the conditions, they stuck to their task on a good batting wicket that reflected well on the Headingley groundstaff, given their limited preparation for the opening fixture.”I was a bit undecided about the toss with the pitch being under the covers yesterday and all the snow, so I think it was a good toss to lose,” Andrew Gale, Yorkshire’s captain, said. “There was no moisture in it really and it was a good-looking pitch – you would expect that pitch in June and July, not the first week in April.”Wayward early on, although that might be explained by early season rustiness, they fought back well after a 141-run opening stand between Scott Newman, on loan from Middlesex, and Rob Key.Inevitably, Ryan Sidebottom picked up where he left off last summer by provided the breakthrough, removing Newman’s middle stump with a yorker shortly after lunch and giving the impetus for a late Yorkshire rally just as the doom-mongers in the crowd were warming up.Key played the innings of the day, showing patience and an ability to judge quick singles until that capacity deserted him with his century only three runs away when he pushed to mid-on and lost the race with Gale’s direct throw at the non-striker’s end.Adil Rashid, who has slowed his run up to almost walking pace, had Ben Harmison caught at slip shortly before tea, but looked to have made a crucial error in dropping West Indies batsman Brendan Nash at slip after he had raced to his half-century off 47 balls.Ajmal Shahzad ensured the miss was not too costly when he induced an edge that was sharply taken by Anthony McGrath at slip and Rashid completed an encouraging comeback by winning an lbw appeal against Michael Powell in the penultimate over of the day.”It’s the first day of the season and ideally you want to have a great first day,” Gale said. “It hasn’t gone to plan but by no means is it the end of the world. I want the lads to come back, hold the heads up high and show what they can do.”I thought we stuck to our task well. Throughout the day we didn’t build enough pressure. Just as I thought we were starting to put a few maidens together we bowled one or two bad balls an over. There were too many boundaries today, but it’s not over yet. It’s a good pitch and I think we can bat as well on it.” Boycott, no doubt, would have nodded approvingly over his breakfast in Sri Lanka.Edited by Alan Gardner
