Mohammad Amir will file an appeal with the Court of Arbitration in Sports (CAS) against the five-year ban imposed on him by an independent tribunal, his lawyer has said. Amir was handed the punishment under article 2.1.1 of the ICC’s anti-corruption code after the tribunal found him guilty of bowling two deliberate no-balls in the Lord’s Test against England last year.The sanction was the minimum prescribed under the code and Amir’s lawyer Shahid Karim said the tribunal, had its hands not been tied to the code, could have gone below five years. It’s a point echoed by the lawyer of Salman Butt, Yasin Patel, and though no indication came from Patel whether there would be an appeal, the point could be a crucial one should any appeal be made.Under the ICC code, the players have 21 days from Saturday to appeal to the CAS. “On behalf of Amir I want to say that we will be disputing the judgment to say the least,” Karim said soon after the verdict had been read out. Just before he spoke, amid extraordinary scenes outside the Qatar Financial Centre, where the hearings were held, Amir was mobbed by a group of Pakistani fans as he tried to leave, and was forced back inside.Indications all through the hearing had been that Karim would bring the mitigating factors of Amir’s young age and his clean disciplinary record until Lord’s into play in a bid to reduce any punishment. “We will be challenging it and we have a right of appeal which we will exercise,” he said. “We are disappointed by the judgment as we felt the tribunal could have exercised its discretion to give a lower sentence.”But the key development appears to be that both Karim and Patel feel the sentences given by the tribunal could – and would – have been lower had the ICC’s code allowed for it. In their written statement, the tribunal said it has “recommended to the ICC certain changes to the Code with a view to providing flexibility in relation to minimum sentences in exceptional circumstances.” Though that left the direction of the flexibility ambiguous – whether they wanted the minimum punishment of five years to be higher or lower – one of the players told ESPNcricinfo that the tribunal was prepared to hand out lower sentences had the code allowed. The lawyers confirmed as much.”I think the silver lining in all this is that at the end they made an order to the effect that they will be asking the ICC to amend the code so as to allow the tribunal in exceptional circumstances to lower the sentence, if they wanted, to below the bottom of what was prescribed,” Karim said.That, believed Karim, left the door open for some form of reversal of the sanction, either in its entirety or a reduction. “If the ICC were to do that, then we’ll see what our options are. Clearly the tribunal felt its’ hands were tied by the minimum that was prescribed in the quote and therefore they could not go below that, which we disputed. The inference is that they wanted to go below the minimum but they could not because of the minimum prescribed to which they were bound. We’ll see now what the future course of events turns out to be.”Neither Mohammad Asif, who was banned for seven years, or his lawyer Alexander Cameron made any statement – though it is believed they may in due course. But Patel, in a short statement read out to the media, echoed Karim’s point. “The tribunal’s hands were tied by the ICC’s code to a five-year minimum,” he said. “Mr Butt is encouraged that the tribunal advised the ICC to change the code or revise the minimum term.”None of the players spoke publicly and are not expected to. Their mood was difficult to gauge, though Karim said Amir had remained composed through the hearings as he was confident of his innocence. Ultimately, however, Karim acknowledged the general feeling among the media that sentences could’ve been worse. “Yes it could’ve been worse for the offences they were found guilty of, technically speaking. If this sanction was to stay in place, he could still make a comeback.”

وذلك ضمن استراتيجية إعادة الاستقرار داخل قلعة الدراويش وهو ما سيكون له مردود إيجابي على نتائج الفريق خلال الفترة المقبلة.

ويأمل مجلس ادارة النادي الاسماعيلي توفيق الله في تحقيق الانتصار للفريق الاول في مبارياته القادمة إن شاء الله.

The International Cricket Council has turned down India’s request to replace Mike Denness as match referee for the third and final Test match betwen South Africa and India. The request from the Board of Control for Cricket in India followed penalties imposed by Denness during the second Test at Port Elizabeth.Denness fined and imposed a suspended ban on India’s Sachin Tendulkar for ball-tampering, after TV evidence showed him using a fingernail on the seam of the ball.The ICC Chief Executive, Malcolm Speed, said: “We have received and are currently considering a written complaint from the BCCI regarding theactions of Mike Denness during the recent India v South Africa Test match.”Mike Denness is a former Test captain and a very experienced match referee.During his time refereeing Test and one-day international matches his recordhas been one of fairness and consistency. On the previous 9 occasions whereMike Denness has acted as referee for a match involving India, no Indianplayers have been reported or penalised.””The BCCI has requested that another match referee be appointed to officiate in the third Test. However, given that the ICC is satisfied that all procedures have been adhered to, we cannot agree to this request.”It remains to be seen whether the final Test at Centurion, which is due to start on Friday, will now go ahead. In demanding Denness’s replacement, the BCCI president, Jagmohan Dalmiya, indicated that several of India’s players wished to pull out of the series.Tendulkar was fined 75% of his match fee and handed a one-match ban, suspended until the end of this year, while five of his team-mates were also punished.The most severe penalty was handed to Virender Sehwag, who was banned for the next Test and fined 75% of his match fee for excessive appealing. Shiv Sunder Das, Harbhajan Singh and Deep Dasgupta were fined the same amount and given suspended single-match bans for the same offence.India captain Sourav Ganguly was given a suspended ban for one Test and two one-day international games for failing to exercise control over his team-mates.The ICC President, Malcolm Gray, said: “The ICC is concerned about standards of on-field behaviour of players and has asked umpires and referees to take a stronger stance in respect of charging offending players and imposing appropriate penalties. This initiative has the strong support of all members of the ICC Executive Board.”If any member country of the ICC is concerned about the processes that havebeen in place for many years, the proper way of dealing with this is to raise it as an issue at the next meeting of the Executive Board.”There is no doubt that he can expect an extra item on the forthcoming agenda as a result of the events of the past two days.

– Estão falando aí que já nos sentimos campeões e tal, mas passo para todos vocês que não existe isso. Temos um exemplo bem recente, já que vencemos o Santos fora de casa e teoricamente perdemos em casa (os dois jogos foram no Pacaembu). But four middle-order fifties, a successful implementation of their trademark ODI batting plan (build first, blast later), the captain’s five-fer and some lively fielding made for an unexpectedly smooth start. The selection of Abdur Rehman over Saeed Ajmal, or even Wahab Riaz seemed puzzlingly defensive – Ajmal and Riaz are wicket-takers and they will need them in this campaign – but Pakistan maintained the intensity in the field they had shown in a quite electric practice session on Monday.Then the younger men in particular had thrown themselves into fielding practice, yapping away, diving and leaping around, hitting stumps, taking good catches. Keeping things at that pitch was Waqar Younis, the coach himself, screaming for catches to be taken as if they were off his own bowling, throwing gloves down in disgust at misfields, not putting up with slackers, taking time out for fresh faces and generally making sure things ran precisely to plan.It is what Pakistan’s demanding followers say they always want, even if in defeat: spirit, fight, passion and energy. “The way we practiced, we were very focused and positive and what we do there, we deliver in the games as well,” Shahid Afridi said. “We try to focus on practice sessions and don’t waste our time. The coaches are doing a great job with the fast bowlers and the senior players are helping the young batsmen.”So, despite having 300-plus to defend, Afridi insisted the team go out and defend much less. “We wanted to make a big total and when we went in, I told the team that we are defending 120, we need to fight like we are defending 120, because tough matches lie ahead.”In those tough matches the middle order will not be allowed to rebuild as freely as they did here if the start is squandered. The concern over Ahmed Shehzad and Mohammad Hafeez’s contributions were not so much with the score as the tentative manner in which they came: the former made a single from 18 balls.The pair has been in good form recently, scoring fluently so the sudden, sharp dip and the nature of it concerned Afridi as well. “Whether in batting or bowling you need a positive start always,” he said. “The ball was sticking to the pitch a little, so it wasn’t so easy but we need to stick to our strengths and play positively. The start is always important and I’m confident our openers will not repeat these mistakes. Shehzad and Hafeez are positive players so hopefully they will change their style in the next game.”Good starts guarantee nothing of course and nobody forgets that Pakistan’s two world titles have come when campaigns have stuttered at the beginning. Nevertheless in a week in which several big sides have made statements against associate nations, Pakistan have put in their own. “Definitely it emphasises that we are a dangerous team. It’s a good start but we shouldn’t be 100% satisfied because there is a lot of work ahead of us still.”

وتابع: “اتحاد الكرة يُرحب باستقالة الثنائي إن أرادا لإن قرار عدم تواجدهما جاء من كلاتنبرج ولا يستطيع الاتحاد الضغط على الخبير الإنجليزي للابقاء عليهما”.
