Western Australia’s Lilac Hill fixture has become a victim of the crowded international and domestic schedules and will no longer appear on the summer calendar. Graeme Wood, the Western Australia chief executive, had hoped the festival game would be included as part of England’s Ashes tour but the plan has been abandoned.”When we decided 12 months ago to postpone the event for 2009, we stated just how much the cricket landscape has changed in two decades and the greater demands on international and interstate scheduling,” Wood said. “The constraints continue to provide us withgreat challenges and it has unfortunately resulted in this wonderful event coming to an end.”The fixture was known for its guest players and in 1999 Dennis Lillee came out of retirement to bowl with his son Adam as the Chairman’s XI beat Pakistan. Richard Hadlee,Graeme Pollock, Barry Richards, Michael Holding, Allan Border, Jeff Thomson and Greg Chappell also played for the local side, which won seven of the 18 matches.

Jim White relays big Rangers update

Speaking live on talkSPORT (via Ibrox News), host and reporter Jim White has relayed some big news out of Rangers whilst also giving his take.

The Lowdown: Robertson confirms news…

Gers chief Stewart Robertson, speaking to Sky Sports (via Daily Record), shared a major development recently with the Glasgow giants managing director confirming their will be away fans allowed in the final two remaining Old Firm fixtures.

Previously this campaign, visiting supporters at either ground were shut out of the historic clash due to an ongoing row involving COVID-19 rules.

Celtic could not guarantee Rangers any away allocation for their second meeting this season, leading Rangers to take rival tickets off the table for their first clash of the campaign back in August last year.

Now, though, Robertson has shared that away supporters will make a return for the last two Old Firm bouts with White relaying this news live-on-air.

The Latest: White excited

Speaking on live radio (via Ibrox News), White has relayed this big development whilst sharing what he believes is a step forward for the Old Firm.

“The Old Firm are heading in the right direction,” he said.

“A report running in Scotland this morning, the Old Firm have seen sense at last, of course, for those who don’t know, the Old Firm – Celtic and Rangers, apparently the Rangers managing director Stewart Robertson admitted that away fans will be back for the remaining two fixtures between the two clubs.

“Now, this is something we’ve been pushing, we couldn’t believe that no Celtic fans were at Ibrox the last time we were up there and that no Rangers fans were across the city last time out.”

The Verdict: Has to be done

One of the most fierce rivalries in world football arguably isn’t complete without both sets of fans in attendance for the bout, so this update from Robertson comes as a big one.

Financially, the attendance of away supporters will also benefit Rangers going forward through ticket sales, adding yet more incentive to allow Celtic fans back inside Ibrox.

Celtic: Smith drops Postecoglou claim

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou is attracting interest from Premier League side Manchester City.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Rory Smith, with the ever-reliable New York Times journalist revealing on BBC Radio 5 Live (via the Daily Mail) that the 56-year-old manager has a number of admirers at the Etihad Stadium.

Smith went on to state that, although it would be an unlikely scenario that the Greek-Australian coach goes on to take over from Pep Guardiola at the Premier League leaders, Postecoglou is extremely well regarded by City chiefs.

Regarding the Celtic manager’s future, the journalist said: “I’m not even sure it would be teams lower down in the Premier League [who would be interested in appointing Postecoglou].

“Ange Postecoglou is not going to get the Man City job, but there are a lot of people at City who really rate him. That actually says all you need to know about how well regarded he is within coaching circles. He worked for Yokohama Marinos which is the City Football Group team in the J-League.

“They think he’s really, really good. I’d be staggered if Pep left in the summer or next summer if they gave it to Postecoglou, but there are people there who will tell you he’s a really gifted manager. I’m not saying it’s impossible [that Postecoglou would replace Guardiola], but it would be surprising.”

Staggering blow inbound?

While, as Smith states, it would be incredibly surprising if Manchester City were to appoint Postecoglou as Guardiola’s successor at the Etihad, the fact that the 56-year-old is already attracting admiration from the Premier League is certainly bad news for Celtic.

Granted, while it is undeniably good for the Hoops that the Greek-Australian coach has managed to turn the club’s fortunes around this season – with the Bhoys currently on course to secure a domestic treble – it was clear that the appointment of the former Australia national team coach was part of a long-term overhaul of the club by the Celtic hierarchy.

As such, while the 56-year-old very much appears to be fully committed to his current role in Glasgow, should the opportunity of a big Premier League job arise this summer – be that at Manchester City or elsewhere – whether or not Postecoglou remains a fixture in the Celtic dugout for the long-term is certainly questionable.

And, with the highly-rated coach having signed a 12-month rolling contract with the Hoops last summer, should he wish to move onto pastures new this summer, there would be very little – aside from offering him a bumper new deal – that the Celtic board could do to retain his services – something that will undoubtedly be a huge cause for concern for everyone involved with the club.

Indeed, considering his exploits in Glasgow so far, leading the Hoops to a League Cup trophy and to the top of the SPFL table with a six-point cushion, it would be nothing short of a staggering blow to lose his services so early into the tenure.

Gul sent for scan on hamstring

Pakistan’s problems were compounded on the second afternoon at Edgbaston as Umar Gul was sent for an MRI scan on a hamstring injury, and was ruled out of contention for the rest of the match

Pakistan’s problems were compounded on the second afternoon at Edgbaston as Umar Gul was sent for an MRI scan on a hamstring injury, and was ruled out of contention for the rest of the match – amid fears that he will be forced to miss the remaining two Tests at The Oval and Lord’s as well.Gul suffered the injury while running in to bowl the first ball of his fourth over of the day. He pulled up in his delivery stride and immediately turned to walk off the field, clutching his right leg, leaving the over to be bowled by Umar Amin.”Gul has gone for an MRI, he has a torn hamstring,” said Yawar Saeed, Pakistan’s manager. “He will play no further part in this match.””I haven’t spoken to the doctor as yet,” said Pakistan’s captain, Salman Butt. “All that I know is that it is a hamstring problem. He wasn’t available today and we still got seven or eight wickets. If we had held the chances that come our way we would have been pretty well off. But obviously he is a very important part of our bowling line-up and we wish he is okay quickly.”If the injury is as serious as feared, then Gul will be looking at an injury lay-off of two to four weeks, leaving him out of contention for the third Test at The Oval which starts on August 18, and a serious doubt for the series finale at Lord’s on August 26.With four wickets in the series to date at 31.50, in addition to a key role in the drawn two-match rubber against Australia last month, Gul has formed part of an incisive three-prong seam attack that has been Pakistan’s redeeming feature on a difficult tour. However, the challenge of playing six Tests in the space of seven weeks was always likely to claim casualties among the squad’s pacemen.”It is very understandable because it is a lot of cricket,” said Butt. “We’ve come straight to the World Cup [World Twenty20], gone to the Asia Cup, come over here, played a few side games. The day we arrived, the next day we played, and the next day we played. It’s been a tough tour and the boys have done really well up to now.If Gul is ruled out, then his likely replacement would be the 25-year-old left-arm seamer Wahab Riaz, who has played five ODIs and one Twenty20 international, but has yet to make his Test debut.

Leeds: Whelan reacts to Poveda news

It would be ‘huge’ if Leeds United’s Ian Poveda returns to the fold at Blackburn Rovers during the run-in, former Whites attacker Noel Whelan says.

The lowdown

Back in August, Leeds winger Poveda sealed a season-long loan move to Championship side Blackburn Rovers.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-41/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-04-02T155252Z_391313781_UP1EI421841M9_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-SOU-REPORT.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

But only eight games into his spell at Ewood Park, he suffered an ankle injury and had to undergo surgery.

Having returned to his parent club, he’s only been able to get back on the grass and step up his rehabilitation in the past few weeks.

But Graham Smyth of the Yorkshire Evening Post reports that he’s now ready to return to Blackburn ahead of their final three matches.

Manager Tony Mowbray will run the rule over Poveda and decide whether he can be of assistance in the short time that remains.

The latest

Whelan says it would be a ‘massive boost’ for the player, in terms of his mood and his physical condition, if he’s able to re-enter the fray at Blackburn.

“The fact that he could come back and finish the season – it’s such a huge thing,” he told Football Insider.

“Both for his confidence and his fitness, to finish the season strongly will be a massive boost.”

The verdict

Come the summer, Jesse Marsch and Leeds will decide if Poveda has what it takes to be a member of the first-team squad next season.

He’d scored one goal and provided two assists in four Championship starts pre-injury, and all parties would have been frustrated to see his progress curtailed.

Indeed, Mowbray had raved about the ‘wonderful talent’ before his long-term lay-off.

It could wind up being a shoot-out at Elland Road between Poveda and fellow youngster Crysencio Summerville, who’s also a right winger.

Should Marsch favour the former, then Summerville could seal a move to Rangers or Hamburg, both credited with interest.

Lungley and Wagg leave Derbyshire

Fast bowler Tom Lungley and allrounder Graham Wagg have parted ways with Derbyshire

Fast bowler Tom Lungley and allrounder Graham Wagg have parted ways with Derbyshire. Lungley, who spent 11 seasons at the County Ground, has been released after the club made the decision not to renew his contract for 2011, while Wagg has signed a three-year contract with Glamorgan.Wagg had been with Derbyshire since 2005, when he returned after a 15-month ban following a positive test for cocaine which saw him sacked by his first county, Warwickshire. A left-arm seamer and right-hand batsman, Wagg represented England at Under-16 and Under-19 levels before making his first-class debut for Warwickshire in 2002.”I’m really happy to have signed with Glamorgan, they are an ambitious club and are steeped in tradition and I’m really looking forward to playing at the newest Test match ground – the SWALEC Stadium,” said Wagg. “I know some of the guys at Glamorgan and everyone seems very friendly so I’m looking forward to coming to Cardiff.””Graham is a quality player and a superb addition to the squad,” added Matthew Maynard, Glamorgan’s director of cricket. “He’s a talented player and I’m sure he will help bring some silverware to the club in future years.”Lungley, 31, has taken 149 first-class wickets at an average of 32.10 since making his debut in 2000 as well as a further 109 dismissals in List A and Twenty20 cricket. He enjoyed his best season in 2007, taking 59 first-class wickets at an average of 26 and a total of 78 dismissals in all competitions. But he has since struggled to repeat that form, and in 2010 played in seven Championship games, taking 19 wickets at 33.15.”These decisions are always difficult especially when they involve a player who has been with the club for so long,” said John Morris, Derbyshire’s Head of Cricket. “Tom was as good as anybody in county cricket during that 2007 season but he has unfortunately been unable to repeat that kind of form in the three campaigns that have followed.”I’m sure I am joined by everybody connected with the Club in thanking Tom for his efforts during 11 seasons and wishing him all the best for the future.”
