Ange must now unleash Nottingham Forest star who "spelt the end for Nuno"

What a turbulent week it has been for Nottingham Forest. The East Midlands side have seen their manager, Nuno Espirito Santo, sacked after around 18 months in the hot seat at the City Ground. His replacement has already been named as former Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou.

However, Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett said “the writing was on the wall” when Edu was appointed the club’s sporting director. Forest spent plenty of money over the summer, too, increasing the size of their squad and spending freely as they have under owner Evangelos Marinakis.

It was certainly a surprise when one of those signings, Omari Hutchinson, was omitted from the Europa League squad.

Hutchinson’s time at Forest so far

England under-21 international Hutchinson made the move to the City Ground from Ipswich Town, who were relegated at the end of last season. He cost the East Midlands side a club-record fee of £37.5m and signed a five-year contract.

In two games under Nuno so far, the 21-year-old has only made two fleeting appearances. His debut was an eight-minute cameo against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, and he played one minute in the 3-0 loss at home to West Ham United.

On the face of things, it is strange that Hutchinson has played so little football for Forest. Even if he is not match fit and ready to start, you might have thought he’d play more than nine minutes in two games. He was a key player for England under-21s in their successful European Championship campaign and scored in the final.

Even stranger, then, is the fact the forward was omitted from the Europa League squad. Charlie Austin said on Sky Sports that “Nottingham Forest convincing Omari Hutchinson to come play for that football club, European football would have been a part of it”, so to leave him out is a strange decision.

It will be fascinating to see if Postecoglou unleashes Hutchinson early on in his reign. There is another player who the Australian manager might well choose to play, who Nuno did not.

The Forest outcast Postecoglou could now unleash

It was certainly a big summer for Forest. Signing several new players to wear Garibaldi Red this season does mean there are going to be some unhappy people in that squad, but one player’s lack of involvement has been a surprise.

27-year-old midfielder Douglas Luiz was a summer addition from Juventus. He signed for the Nottingham-based outfit on a season-long loan from the Old Lady, with an obligation to buy him at the end of the season if certain conditions are met.

Yet, Luiz has played even less than Hutchinson. The former Aston Villa midfielder was an unused substitute for the two games he’s been available for. That surprised talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook, who said it was a decision that “spelt the end for Nuno” at Forest.

It is curious that the Brazilian has played so little at Forest. His time at Villa Park showed just how good of a Premier League player he is. In 204 games for the Villans, he scored 22 times and assisted 24, operating as a number six, controlling the game, and a number eight.

The tenacity shown in the video above from 2023/24 is exactly what he can bring to the Forest midfield.

His underlying numbers from that campaign are impressive, with the Brazilian having a 60% take-on success rate and winning 4.5 duels per 90 minutes.

It is certainly hard to understand why Nuno didn’t field Luiz at all this season. However, with the quality he can bring on the ball and his engine out of possession, he is a midfielder that Postecoglou can depend on.

Forest are next in action away to Arsenal, so it will be fascinating to see if their new manager gives Luiz minutes. He will certainly be hoping to avoid some of the mistakes Nuno made towards the end of his tenure.

They brought in left-arm fast bowler Arshad Khan in place of Kagiso Rabada, who missed out due to personal reasons. That left GT with only two overseas players in their bowling XI, with Sherfane Rutherford likely to come in while batting.”It looks like a good wicket. The conditions don’t change much, so we are looking to bowl first,” Gill said at the toss.”We are all about reducing our unforced errors, and we will try and fine-tune the areas that need some fine-tuning.”Rajat Patidar, the RCB captain, said that he would have bowled first as well, while confirming that RCB are going with an unchanged XI.”We wanted to bowl first as well,” he said. “The surface is pretty hard, [and] will not change much. We will try and keep them under pressure. The way everybody is chipping in gives me confidence. Everyone is looking in a good frame of mind.”RCB are coming into the game with two stellar wins. They began their season with a seven-wicket victory against Kolkata Knight Riders in the tournament opener. Six days later, they did something that they hadn’t since 2008 – defeated Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk by a huge 50-run margin.

Rahane steers clear of 'chaos', will discuss Eden pitch with IPL authorities

KKR captain Rahane admits his bowlers were off the boil, but does indicate the pitch wasn’t what his team had asked for

Sreshth Shah09-Apr-20251:51

Did promoting Ramandeep over Russell cost KKR?

“I prefer not to speak. If I speak, I’m in big trouble,” Jose Mourinho famously muttered after a narrow defeat for Chelsea in 2014. That had to do with the refereeing in that game against Aston Villa. On Tuesday, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Ajinkya Rahane said pretty much the same thing. “” (“If I say anything, it’ll create chaos).”He didn’t need to elaborate. After KKR fell short by just four runs in an IPL 2025 game where their spinners had little impact against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), the murmurs around the Eden Gardens surface, and whether it plays to the strengths of the home side, began swirling again.”Let me just keep it that way. curator publicity (this discussion has just given our curator a lot of publicity),” Rahane went on to add in the post-match press conference. “Whatever you’d like to write about home advantage, you can go ahead. If I have any concerns, I will talk to the IPL about it, rather than you guys, and discuss with the concerned authorities.”Related

Marsh, Pooran outgun KKR in high-scoring thriller

Rathi dismisses idol Narine with his first ball

With 238 playing 234, bowlers of all kinds were clattered around the park, but for KKR to not use all eight overs of spin at home went against popular wisdom. Sunil Narine was hit for two fours and three sixes in his three-over wicketless spell of 38. The other spinners on view – Varun Chakravarthy, Digvesh Rathi and Ravi Bishnoi – did complete their overs.Bishnoi, too, was hit for six fours and two sixes. While Varun and Rathi finished with their reputations intact, going at 7.75 and 9.25 respectively, and occasionally troubled the batters with their variations, there was little turn on offer in the afternoon game.”Firstly, there was no help for the spinners, let me clear that,” Rahane said when asked why Narine’s quota was not completed. “They used the longer boundary really well. Our bowlers tried as well, but again, Nicholas Pooran (87* in 36 balls) and Mitchell Marsh (81 in 48) batted really well. In between, they took their chances, which came off really well for them. It was a lovely wicket [to bat on], we all saw that, scoring almost 500 runs [472] on this track. Hard for the bowlers, but they used the conditions and the boundary well.”Rahane said that the KKR bowlers had plan against Marsh and Pooran, especially keeping in mind the lopsided boundary dimensions for this game – 57 metres to one side, 70 metres to the other – but felt the bowlers failed to land the balls in the right areas.”Sometimes what happens is, as a bowling unit, when we have that plan, it’s all about execution, and that didn’t happen tonight for us,” Rahane said. “Against strong, quality players like Pooran and Marsh, as bowlers, there is very little margin of error. I thought our plans were perfect, but we couldn’t nail that perfect yorker or wide slower ball. And they just capitalised on those slightly loose balls or easier balls.”Ajinkya Rahane felt there were enough positives to take back despite their four-run defeat•Associated Press

Rahane, though, felt there were enough positives to take back despite their four-run defeat, especially with their powerplay batting. He scored 61 in 35 balls himself, and his shots alongside those of Narine (30 in 13) and Venkatesh Iyer (45 in 29) kept KKR in the contest – they were 90 for 1 after the first six overs, their second-best IPL powerplay performance.”I thought we played really good cricket, you know. Chasing 239 and coming that close is never easy,” Rahane said. “Everyone’s intent and attitude was really positive when we came into the dressing room after 20 overs of bowling. And we thought we will chase it down. But these things happen, you know. When you’re chasing, you will lose two-three wickets in between.”I thought the way we started in the powerplay with Sunny’s intent and Venkatesh Iyer’s batting, their contribution was amazing. So we got more positives I feel. I always believe that whatever happened in this game, it’s past now. As long as we are learning from our mistakes and the good things we have done, that’s all.”KKR, now sixth on the points table with two wins in five games, next travel away to meet Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on April 11 in a short turnaround.

Crystal Palace eye move to sign £2m EFL star who Lampard called "amazing"

Crystal Palace are now closely monitoring an EFL star, who has made a flying start to the new campaign, ahead of a potential move in the January transfer window.

Palace looking to repeat successful EFL recruitment strategy

Palace have enjoyed a great deal of success when recruiting players from the EFL in recent years, with Michael Olise joining from Reading, before going on to make 90 appearances for the club, chipping in with 16 goals and 25 assists.

Adam Wharton is another player who has gone from strength-to-strength since joining from Blackburn Rovers, with Marc Guehi describing his teammate as “unbelievable.”

Perhaps one of the most important signings in the Eagles’ history also came from the Championship, with Eberechi Eze arriving from Queens Park Rangers back in 2020, going on to score the winning goal in the 2025 FA Cup final against Manchester City.

Recruiting from the lower leagues has also proven to be a savvy strategy from a business point of view, with Eze joining Arsenal in a £67.5m deal in the summer, having arrived at Selhurst Park for a fee of just £19.5m.

Deal "agreed and sealed" for Crystal Palace to sign goalscoring midfielder

Crystal Palace are set to complete an out-of-window deal.

BySean Markus Clifford Sep 8, 2025

Consequently, it is no wonder Steve Parish & co are eager to bring in more up-and-coming EFL talents, and they have are in the race for West Bromwich Albion’s Isaac Price, according to a report from EFL Analysis.

The report states Price is attracting widespread interest, with the likes of Burnley, Brentford, Leeds United and Fulham also being named as potential suitors, so there could be fierce competition for the central midfielder’s signature.

West Brom have a battle of their hands trying to keep hold of the 21-year-old, who arrived at The Hawthorns for just £2m last January, with Palace closely monitoring his progress ahead of potentially making a move as soon as the January transfer window.

"Amazing" Price has made flying start to the campaign

Under the helm of new manager Ryan Mason, the Northern Irishman has made a fantastic start to the new campaign, having already bagged three goals in the Championship, while also chipping in with one assist.

As such, the Pontefract-born midfielder could be capable of playing a leading role in the Baggies’ push for promotion, having found his feet in the Championship following a spell with Standard Liege in Belgium after leaving Everton.

It is starting to look like a bad decision from the Toffees to let the youngster’s contract run down, particularly considering he was showing promising signs at Goodison Park, with Frank Lampard once saying: “His energy is amazing, wins a lot of second balls & is calm when he gets there. Finds passes & pockets which is natural knack.”

However, Everton’s loss could be Crystal Palace’s gain, as Price clearly looks like he is ready to make the step-up to the Premier League, and a January move to Selhurst Park is likely to be an attractive proposition, considering how Eze and Olise’s careers took off.

The new Rooney: Everton star is already becoming a "game-changer" for Moyes

Despite having to settle for a 0-0 draw last time out in the Premier League, the vibes are still at an all-time high at Everton.

After all, on another day, the Toffees would have picked up another victory in that unfortunate stalemate versus Aston Villa, with David Moyes and Co. somehow squandering 20 efforts in total across the course of the frustrating clash.

With Everton sitting in a pretty sixth position at the moment, Moyes will be hopeful that the glory days of his previous long reign as boss are back to stay, with the much-loved Scotsman once consistently steering the Merseyside outfit to top-half finishes.

No relegation worries seem to be seeping in, with the former West Ham United boss-turned-returning Toffees manager even possessing his next Wayne Rooney now, arguably, to ramp up the nostalgia even more.

Rooney's heroics at Everton

Much like Moyes, Rooney would also return to Merseyside in 2017.

The celebrated attacker had gone on to Manchester United in 2004 and won trophies galore, with a sublime tally of 253 goals and 142 assists coming his way. Safe to say, Rooney was correct to originally leave his hometown club behind, even if it was so early into his fledgling career.

He still showed he could turn on the style on his return, too, with this memorable effort against West Ham United, sending the Goodison Park masses into raptures.

Across the full 40 games on his return, there were no signs that his legs had gone, which might well have been a worry so deep into his esteemed playing days, with 13 goal contributions notched up in total, making it a special reunion for the magical forward.

Amazingly, despite Rooney being such an enigmatic, one-off presence on the pitch, Moyes might well feel he has his next coming of the entertaining great at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, even so early into life in their brand-new home.

Everton's new "game changer"

Everton fans will be far happier going to watch their team now than the gloom and doom tenure of Sean Dyche, with the attractive football being served up.

Indeed, away from firing blanks against the Villans last time out and Leeds United on the opening day, the Toffees have managed to bag an electric five goals from their other clashes this season, with Jack Grealish often at the heart of a vibrant attacking move working out.

Many would have surely anticipated that this move for Grealish to leave Manchester City for pastures new on Merseyside would pay off, with the former Villa midfielder a star on the same level as Rooney’s excellence when on top form.

But, nobody would have quite expected how easy the 30-year-old would find it to instantly hit the ground running in the manner he has.

From just five games under Moyes’ wing, Grealish already has a blistering four assists next to his name, with his split-second ability to carve out an opening or excite the Toffees contingent with an effort of his own making him a Rooney-like presence already.

To further validate the comparison point, it’s clear that Grealish – much like his revered counterpart – needed a switch like the one he sealed to Everton to get his waning career back on track, with the three-time Premier League winner losing his way somewhat in Manchester.

Similarly, it was clear from Rooney’s final few seasons at Old Trafford that he wasn’t the spritely star he once was, with rampant injuries often getting the better of him.

But, as is clear now with the two mavericks in question, form might be temporary, but class is permanent.

Grealish’s class has been so prominent so far at Everton that he has even been hailed as a “game changer” for his standout efforts by analyst Matt Smith.

Amazingly, this resurrection of the skilful Englishman might well stand him in good stead to be remembered as an all-time great in the Premier League, alongside Rooney, with the Toffees faithful already heralding him as an icon in the here and now, that’s for sure.
