Hollie Armitage makes her mark as Diamonds overwhelm Storm

Career-best 97 is ample to see off challenge despite Wilson’s 42

England hopeful Hollie Armitage hit a fabulous 97 off 64 balls – the highest score in this season’s Charlotte Edwards Cup – as the Northern Diamonds beat Western Storm by 28 runs in a dead-rubber clash at Headingley.A penultimate round group fixture between two regions with only a win apiece in this season’s T20 competition saw the hosts post 146 for three and defend it comfortably.Former England batter Fran Wilson top-scored with 42 in Storm’s 118 for seven, but Scotland international Rachel Slater, Sophia Turner and Katie Levick all impressed with two wickets.Armitage hit 14 fours and two sixes in a career-best score in all T20 cricket. She dominated a 97 opening partnership inside 12 overs with Emma Marlow, who contributed only nine. This game was watched by a number of former Yorkshire players who had been invited by the club as part of their ongoing Celebration of Women’s sport.England legend Katherine Sciver-Brunt, handed an OBE on Friday in the King’s Birthday Honours list, was one.The Diamonds innings was, in truth, all about Armitage, who drove the first ball of the match – from Issy Wong – to the cover boundary, her first of 10 in a 30-ball fifty. The England fringe all-rounder took advantage of a true Headingley surface to pile the pressure on the Storm, especially their seamer Ellie Anderson, who she hit for five fours in the fifth over. When Armitage reached her fifty in the sixth, Diamonds were 56 without loss, and opening partner Emma Marlow basically had the best spectator’s seat in the house.Marlow only contributed five off 11 balls to a 10-over score of 90 without loss, of which her skipper had 82.Marlow fell caught behind for nine off a top-edge against Sophia Smale’s left-arm spin in the 12th over.Armitage raced into the nineties. But, as she got closer to a maiden T20 century, rain started to fall.Whether it contributed to her dismissal – caught and bowled off Chloe Skelton’s off-spin, at 124 for two in the 16th over – remains to be seen. She may have been concerned that the heavens were going to open to deny her, hence shimmying down the pitch and miscueing a return catch. And that was the start of an impressive Storm recovery in the last 10 overs, with loanee quick Wong bowling Sterre Kalis for 22 as Diamonds didn’t make the most of Armitage’s good work.Smale and Wong returned one for 23 from their respective four overs. But it wasn’t enough.Just as Storm were under early fire with ball in hand, they were with the bat too.Left-arm seamer Slater had Dani Gibson caught behind with the first ball of the chase before uprooting Nat Wraith’s middle stump with a sumptuous in-swinging yorker to leave the Storm at one for two after one over.Again, they recovered, with opener Emma Corney and Wilson sharing 50 for the third wicket. But the former holed out for 17 to long-on off Turner’s seam at a crucial juncture – 51 for three in the ninth. From there, Storm just couldn’t get going quickly enough.Miserly Scottish off-spinner Katherine Fraser had Wilson caught at long-on, leaving the score at 80 for four after 14 overs.Leg-spinner Levick removed captain Sophie Luff stumped in the next over, and Diamonds were all but home and hosed. Turner and Levick, the latter defending 33 off the last over, both struck again.

Man Utd: INEOS make approach to sign "very underrated" £138k-p/w Brazilian

Manchester United are looking to add to their squad while not overstepping the mark financially, and they have now reportedly made an enquiry for a Brazil international, according to reports.

Man Utd eye shock Dominic Calvert-Lewin deal

The Red Devils and INEOS are looking to add to the pack after Matheus Cunha’s arrival from Wolverhampton Wanderers and find themselves pushing to land Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford. Diego Leon has also finalised his move to the club.

Reports suggest a deal could be finalised by Monday that would see the Cameroon international head to Old Trafford. At the same time, Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic, Aston Villa star Ollie Watkins and Nigeria hitman Victor Osimhen have also been touted as potential offensive recruits.

However, Manchester United could sign free agent Dominic Calvert-Lewin as a squad rotation option. However, journalist Ben Jacobs believes he may need to lower his wage demands before a deal for the ex-Everton striker can become viable.

He stated: “Calvert-Lewin’s wage demands are very high, and therefore it is unlikely that Man United will move in that direction unless the demands decrease or they have a hole in the squad later in the window. As a free agent, the player will be rigid on his demands.”

Premier League experience will become paramount for the Red Devils in their rebuilding phase. Ruben Amorim is likely to have one game a week to manage most weeks, offering the possibility of focusing solely on the club’s league position without external commitments.

Cup football will also present a chance at silverware. Nevertheless, there is plenty of work to be done in the market before Manchester United are back challenging for honours, though their latest pursuit wouldn’t be a bad step in the right direction.

Man Utd make Douglas Luiz enquiry

According to reports relayed by FootballTransfers, Manchester United and therefore INEOS have submitted an enquiry regarding Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz’s availability following a frustrating campaign that has seen the Brazil international be placed on the transfer list.

Everton and Fulham are also in pursuit of the ex-Aston Villa man, who made 27 appearances across all competitions for the Old Lady last season.

He has previously been lauded as a “very underrated” engine room presence by Paul Merson, with the former Arsenal man claiming Luiz was every bit as good as the likes of Declan Rice and Rodri while he plied his trade in the West Midlands.

Earning £138,000 per week in Turin, there is also talk that Luiz could be used as a part of a swap deal that would see Juventus land Jadon Sancho, albeit aforementioned striker Vlahovic is also mentioned, making the saga a possibility and nothing more.

Injury problems hampered the 27-year-old last term, and a return to the English top-flight could now be on the cards, though there would be other considerations to take into account for Manchester United.

Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte are two existing deeper-lying midfield options, while Kobbie Mainoo can also operate in the six, so Amorim would potentially need to think about cutting someone loose to ensure his side had the space to acquire Luiz.

Mahika Gaur, England’s highly-rated left-arm seamer, has withdrawn from this year’s Women’s Hundred, to continue her recovery from a side strainGaur, 18, had been retained by Manchester Originals after impressing in her debut season last year, but will instead use the competition’s month-long window to continue her rehabilitation, under the supervision of the medical teams at both the ECB and her regional side, Thunder.Gaur was not available for England’s early-season white-ball series against Pakistan, as she was completing her A-levels, but was then ruled out of the T20I squad to face New Zealand this month after picking up her injury. Her absence from the Hundred could impact her hopes of breaking into England’s squad for the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh, with that competition set to form a key part of the players’ preparation in the absence of any other bilateral cricket prior to their departure in October.Gaur, who represented UAE from the age of 12, made a strong impression in her first England appearances against Sri Lanka last summer, including with figures of 3 for 26 on her ODI debut at Chester-le-Street in September.

Colin Ackermann keeps Durham alive as Hampshire thrashed

Veteran’s 96 and Neil Wagner’s all-round excellence consignes Hampshire to a second defeat

Colin Ackermann’s recovering 96 plus ex-New Zealand fast bowler Neil Wagner’s impressive all-round contribution in his first game post-Test retirement earlier this year maintained Durham’s Metro Bank One-Day Cup hopes as they beat Hampshire by 144 runs at Gosforth.Ackermann led the fightback from 183 for 7 to 257 all out, hitting five sixes in 98 balls, while debutant overseas signing Wagner added 33 before taking 2 for 18 from six overs with the new ball as Hampshire slumped to 113 all out.Hampshire started the day second in Group A with four wins from five games but suffered a second defeat, while Durham won for the third time in six to maintain their hopes of a top-three finish for knockout qualification. Seamer Paul Coughlin also struck three times.Wagner, 38-years-old, has signed a short-term deal with Durham for the remainder of the season. This was his first appearance of any kind since his 64th and final Test, at home against South Africa, in February. While Hampshire started well with the ball and in the field, Durham finished strongly with the bat to give themselves a workable total on a competitive pitch at South Northumberland Cricket Club.England Under 19s quick Dom Kelly – 3 for 48 from 10 overs – removed both Durham openers. Michael Jones was caught behind and Ben McKinney sharply caught at cover by captain Nick Gubbins, who had elected to bowl first.Durham skipper Alex Lees was also caught behind off a top-edged sweep at Felix Organ’s off-spin, and the hosts were 56 for 3 in the 16th over.Hampshire’s fielding also contributed to a strong start. The Gubbins catch was followed by the run out of Scott Borthwick at the striker’s end from square-leg, Kyle Abbott with the throw, as the former England man stuttered going for a single.Further departures of Bas de Leede, Hayden Mustard – bowled by Abbott and Kelly – and Coughlin strengthened Hampshire’s hand at 183 for seven in the 42nd over. But Durham’s fightback was equally impressive on a bright but blustery day. Ackermann and Wagner shared an eighth-wicket 62 inside eight overs. The left-handed Wagner struck the ball nicely in a vital 27-ball knock and supported Ackermann, whose innings was well paced.Ackermann reached 50 in as many balls. Of his five sixes, three were hoisted handsomely down the ground off seam late in an innings which ended with him narrowly missing out on a deserved century. Abbott’s figures indicated Durham’s revival. The former South African seamer conceded only 11 runs in his first eight overs but 23 in his final two.In reply, the early signs were good for Hampshire as openers Gubbins and Fletcha Middleton shared 40 inside eight overs. But Wagner battled back, as he has so often done through a stellar career. After Coughlin had Gubbins caught behind, Wagner got Middleton caught at slip and Tom Prest caught behind – both driving – as the visitors slipped to 45 for 3 in the 11th.Unfortunately for them, they couldn’t recover as Coughlin caused further problems. He had Toby Albert caught behind and Felix Organ caught at slip, while Ben Brown drilled de Leede to mid-off in between as Hampshire crumbled to 69 for six in the 17th.From there, their task was forlorn. Off-spinner George Drissell then claimed two of the last four wickets to fall, while Joseph Eckland was brilliantly caught at backward point by a diving McKinney off Daniel Hogg’s seam.De Leede claimed the winning wicket when he bowled Brad Wheal in the 27th over.

Newcastle have held SJP talks to sign "fantastic" £50m forward after Elanga

After reaching an agreement to sign Anthony Elanga, Newcastle United could reportedly turn their focus towards signing another Premier League star following internal talks.

Newcastle set to sign Anthony Elanga

It’s been a frustrating few weeks for Newcastle, who watched on as their targets headed elsewhere. But that frustration is finally over thanks to Elanga. The Nottingham Forest star is reportedly set to join the Magpies after an agreement was reached with the Trick Trees over a deal worth as much as £55m this summer.

Even after Callum Wilson’s decision to leave the club this summer, Newcastle’s frontline will be in better shape than ever once Elanga is up and running under Eddie Howe.

With the Swede, the Magpies will have Anthony Gordon, Harvey Barnes, Alexander Isak, William Osula and Elanga all at their disposal – forming one of the most dangerous attacks in the Premier League.

Having scored 45 goals between them last season, Newcastle’s new-look attack will be hoping to improve on those numbers when working together at St James’ Park in the coming campaign.

Meanwhile, away from the pitch, PIF and Newcastle still have unfinished business in the transfer window. Names such as Giorgio Scalvini have threatened to steal the headlines as of late and the Magpies could yet land an impressive defensive reinforcement.

He's more important than Elanga: Newcastle now working to sign £60m PL star

With Anthony Elanga set to join Newcastle for £55m, the Magpies are now chasing an “exceptional” PL star worth £60m, who is a long-term target.

ByBen Gray Jul 8, 2025

What’s more, another Premier League star has reportedly entered their radar in another move to improve what is already a stacked frontline.

Newcastle hold internal talks about signing £50m Wissa

According to The Daily Mail, a new name has entered the frame for the Magpies. Newcastle and PIF have held internal discussions about signing Yoane Wissa this summer.

With Brentford teammate Bryan Mbeumo reportedly heading towards Manchester United rather than Newcastle, the Magpies have reportedly spoken about signing his striker partner instead.

Like Mbeumo, however, Wissa won’t come cheap this summer. According to reports, any club who want to sign the talented striker will have to pay as much as £50m to secure his signature. After already splashing out to sign Elanga this summer, there will be question marks over Newcastle’s ability to match that price within PSR rules.

If PSR proves to be no problem, though, then those at St James’ Park should jump at the chance to sign Wissa before the end of August. If Elanga’s season looked impressive, then Wissa’s should be seen as an entirely different level.

The forward scored 19 Premier League goals – just four fewer than Isak – and was described as “fantastic” by former Brentford boss Thomas Frank last time out.

For £50m, Newcastle could round off their attack in statement-making fashion and put any of their early summer misery behind them once and for all.

Bartlett suffers side strain, Dwarshuis called in as cover for ODIs

Bartlett’s tour appears to be over after suffering a side strain in his fourth over in Southampton with Dwarshuis flying to the UK but not officially added to the ODI squad

Australia are facing the prospect of losing another pace bowler from their UK tour after Xavier Bartlett pulled up with a side strain in the first T20I against England in Southampton. He had overcome a no-ball from his first delivery, which saw Phil Salt taken at mid-off by captain Mitchell Marsh who had not heard the call and started to celebrate, to claim the wicket of Jordan Cox later in the powerplay. In a rare sight of a quick operating unchanged in a T20, Bartlett was given his four overs off the reel by Marsh as he extracted swing on a cold night but aborted his attempt to complete his last two deliveries. If, as seems likely, Bartlett’s tour is over it would add to the loss of Spencer Johnson (side) and Nathan Ellis (hamstring) from the trip. Riley Meredith, who had been called up for the Scotland series after Josh Hazlewood’s calf injury, was retained for the England T20 matches after Ellis was ruled out with an injury initially sustained in the Hundred.Related

The selectors had not confirmed who would come into the one-day squad which Ellis was set to be part of. New South Wales left-armer Ben Dwarshuis will fly in ahead of the ODIs although currently he is there to provide cover and has not officially been added to the squad. Dwarshuis is uncapped in ODIs but has played three T20Is.Bartlett had not been due to be part of the ODI leg despite bursting onto the scene with consecutive four-wicket hauls against West Indies earlier this year. A side injury would likely put him in doubt for the start of the domestic season with Queensland with the Marsh Cup beginning later this month before the Sheffield Shield starts in early October.Hazlewood made an impressive return to action in Southampton with 2 for 32 from his four overs which included the key wicket of Liam Livingstone who had threatened to bring England back into the contest. He and Mitchell Starc will be part of the one-day series but Pat Cummins is missing the whole tour to work on strength and condition ahead of the home summer.

Man Utd now set to intensify move for 6'5 "menace" after 3 years of talks

After finally agreeing a deal to sign Bryan Mbeumo, Manchester United are now set to intensify their efforts to sign another impressive attacking addition.

Man Utd reach agreement to sign Mbeumo

After a long few weeks, United are finally set to get their man after reportedly agreeing a deal worth as much as £70m+ all-in to sign Mbeumo. INEOS had been spending recent weeks attempting to get that price tag down, but Brentford’s stubborn stance soon forced their hand. Putting the hefty fee aside for the moment, however, there’s no denying that Mbeumo will be an instant upgrade at Old Trafford.

The forward’s arrival will take United’s spending to around the £133m-mark after welcoming Matheus Cunha for a reported fee of £63m at the start of the summer transfer window. For all the criticism that they have received, INEOS have so far backed Ruben Amorim in the summer transfer window.

Not only did Mbeumo and Cunha score a combined 35 Premier League goals last season, but they also stood out for how they outperformed their expected total. Their records suggest that Manchester United are set to welcome two much-needed clinical finishers to their side.

To give context for just how much of an upgrade they’ll provide Amorim, Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund managed a combined seven Premier League goals last season.

Man Utd set to intensify Sesko move

According to TeamTalk, Manchester United are now set to intensify their move to sign Benjamin Sesko, who is valued at a hefty £67m by RB Leipzig this summer.

The 6 foot 5 Slovenia star initially caught United’s eye in 2022, when they first contacted the forward whilst he was still at Red Bull Salzburg. And, having worked on their relationship with player and camp ever since, the Red Devils are in position to step up their interest and complete their attacking overhaul in style.

Like Mbeumo and Cunha, Sesko outperformed Zirkzee and Hojlund last season, with his clinical nature in front of goal also standing out when compared to their underperformance. If Sesko arrives to join the incoming duo then United could be going from one of the most disappointing frontlines to one of the most promising in the Premier League.

Described as a “menace” by U23 scout Antonio Mango, the 22-year-old is ready to take the Premier League by storm after stealing countless headlines in the Bundesliga.
