Things have turned around on the blue half of Merseyside – with plenty more changes on the horizon for resurgent Everton.
Bramley Moore awaits at the dawn of the 2025/26 season, the dawn of a new era, and it was only a few months ago those of a Toffees persuasion feared the new beginning would come not in the Premier League but England’s second tier.
But Sean Dyche is now gone, and in place, David Moyes takes the seat, pursued by new owners The Friedkin Group as the first port of call.
Everton managerDavidMoyescelebrates after the match
Even the most glass-half-empty Everton fans must now feel a page has been turned – and for the better. Leeds United’s chief executive, Angus Kinnear, has also been poached, and he will replace Kevin Thelwell at the end of the season when his contract expires.
TFG are enacting an overhaul and a much-needed one at that. One of Kinnear’s opening gambits will surely be to replenish Everton’s frontline – let’s take a look at how he might do it.
Everton's shift at centre-forward
Moyes orchestrated Everton’s mid-season revival, unleashing the beleaguered players and urging them toward better form, new-found confidence. After such vapid football, the Merseysiders are now riding a seven-match unbeaten streak.
Beto has been the attacking focal point throughout this run. With Iliman Ndiaye and Dominic Calvert-Lewin both injured, the 27-year-old has been reborn in England, hitting five goals from seven league appearances since the Scottish manager’s arrival.
With Calvert-Lewin back in the infirmary once more and heading toward the end of his contract, it’s increasingly likely he will be allowed to search for pastures new after 269 (currently) appearances in an Everton shirt.
Everton's DominicCalvert-Lewincelebrates their third goal, an own goal scored by Tottenham Hotspur's Archie Gray
With a paltry three-goal haul to his name, Calvert-Lewin has missed 13 big chances in the Premier League this year, whereas his Bissau-Guinean counterpart has only squandered seven big chances, having converted six strikes in total.
Calvert-Lewin has played a long span of his career at Goodison Park, but this feels like a natural end to his career, with the new era calling for something new to partner Beto.

Beto has outperformed his positional peer considerably, but if Calvert-Lewin does indeed leave, Kinnear and Moyes will need to make the right move to replace him.
Everton make contact for Calvert-Lewin replacement
Armando Broja is on loan from Chelsea and has a clause in the agreement that could see Everton purchase him for a fee in the region of £30m at the end of the season. With injuries laying waste to his campaign, this doesn’t seem likely.
Transfer Focus
Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.
Especially with Everton’s interest piqued by another graduate from Chelsea’s Cobham talent factory: Tammy Abraham.
According to Caught Offside, TFG have already begun talks for the transfer of the rangy striker through his agents, though Newcastle United and West Ham United are thought to have the strongest interest right now.
Abraham has struggled to perform on loan at AC Milan this season but he’s a dynamic and proven goalscorer who could be the perfect foil for the revivified Beto.
What Tammy Abraham would bring to Bramley Moore
Aged 27, Abraham is a seasoned Premier League striker, with 89 appearances and 31 goal involvements to his name. Curious that it’s nearly been four years since he played in his homeland.
A Champions League winner with Chelsea, Abraham left for Roma in 2021 for a £34m fee, joining Jose Mourinho’s cause and going on to forge the most incredible campaign for himself.
Indeed, in 2021/22, Abraham was instrumental in I Giallorossi’s Conference League-winning campaign, scoring 27 goals across 53 appearances in all competitions. He hailed Mourinho for turning him into a “monster” and a more aggressive player.
Abraham’s former coach, Stephen Elliott, has described him as a “goal machine” in the past, and in the pleasant conditions at Everton right now, he could find the stability he needs, back in England, to prosper.
Though Abraham has scored eight times for Milan this term, only starting 13 matches across all competitions and adding four assists too.
The England international’s tactical efforts have actually seen Calvert-Lewin listed as one of his most comparable players by FBref, but this shouldn’t be regarded as a negative. Fans know just how brilliant the tall number nine can be when he’s fit, having been described as a “monster” himself by talent scout Jacek Kulig when in his heyday under Carlo Ancelotti.
At 6 foot 3, he’d be an able replacement, with creative and defensive qualities that suggest he would be perfect in Moyes’ system. Abraham ranks among the top 27% of forwards across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 23% for aerial battles won and the top 9% for tackles per 90, illustrating his prowess across such areas.
Everton manager David Moyes andBetoafter the match
Bringing Abraham over from Serie A could see Moyes get his own version of Beto, a forward he had signed himself. After plying such good and hard work with the powerful star, it could be a bold transfer to ensure Everton kickstart this new age, and rise toward the upper echelons of the Premier League hierarchy.
He may well be hungering for a place back in the English first division, and though he has suffered his share of injury problems over the past several years and struggled to nail down a regular starting berth across two Italian outfits, Abraham is still producing goals, invariably dangerous.
Conversely, DCL has indeed only netted three all season. They might share traits, but this would freshen up the ranks. It might even see Moyes repeat Thelwell’s trick in bringing Beto over from Italy to the Premier League.

Irfan Pathan believes the back-up can be in the form of spin-bowling allrounder, given the 2023 World Cup will be in home conditions

Gautam Gambhir, the former India batter, says the team needs to identify a back-up for seam-bowling allrounder Hardik Pandya as a priority as they build towards the 50-over World Cup at home this October-November.”They need to quickly identify a back-up for Hardik; if something happens to him, India will be in serious, serious trouble,” Gambhir said on “Road To World Cup Glory”, a show on Star Sports that will be aired in full after the first T20I between India and Sri Lanka.Watch Gambhir, Irfan and Srikkanth’s full take on Star Sports
Watch the full show on Star Sports 1 and Star Sports 1 Hindi soon after the first T20I between India and Sri Lanka this evening.
Hardik only recently returned to full fitness after dealing with a back condition that he’s had to manage over the past few years. The upcoming ODIs against Sri Lanka, where he’ll be vice-captain, will be his first one-dayers since the tour of England in July 2022.Irfan Pathan, the former India allrounder, believes that the back-up for Hardik doesn’t necessarily need to be in the form of a seam-bowling allrounder because the tournament will be played in India. To illustrate his point, he cited Yuvraj Singh’s exploits at the 2011 World Cup, where he was Player of the Tournament with 362 runs and 15 wickets courtesy his left-arm spin.”In these conditions, you’re allowed to have two spinning allrounders,” Irfan said. “Guys like Washy [Washington Sundar], Axar [Patel], [Ravindra] Jadeja, and most importantly Deepak Hooda also [should be] in your scheme of things. Because he’s a batter; he just took four wickets in the New Zealand series. He [Hooda] needs to get a long run.”Who should make up India’s pace attack at the World Cup? Irfan also said having an out-and-out quick in Umran Malik will give India’s pace attack the X-factor, especially on flat decks where the ball may not seam much. Gambhir, meanwhile, welcomed Jasprit Bumrah’s return, saying he will be the team’s biggest strength at the World Cup.Both Gambhir and Irfan were unanimous in their support for Prasidh Krishna, who has impressed in his limited opportunities with his hit-the-deck style that helps him generate steep bounce at excellent pace. Krishna hasn’t played any form of cricket since the tour of Zimbabwe in August, having picked up a back issue in September.”He’s a guy who can give you extra pace and bounce, he’s my guy,” Irfan said. “Avesh Khan can also be someone who can get bounce even on show pitches. You need guys who can give a little extra on such wickets.”Kris Srikkanth, chairman of the selection panel who picked the 2011 World Cup-winning team, had a different line-up in mind. “Umran Malik, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj will be my four pacers, along with Hardik Pandya’s medium pace. The matter ends.”‘Take a break from T20 cricket, not ODIs’ – Gambhir Workload management amid an increasingly packed calendar has been a hot topic of late, with India rotating players and not often fielding a first-choice XI. If this is the case in 2023 as well, Gambhir said, the focus should be on having first-choice players play ODIs and rest during T20I series or the IPL.”This year [the core group should be focusing on] ODIs for sure. If they want to take a break, people who are playing all the three formats, they can definitely take a break from T20 cricket but surely not from ODI format. They have got to play together – I think the biggest mistake Indian cricket has made in the last probably two World Cups has been that they [the core players], these guys have not played enough cricket [in the lead up to the World Cups] together.”Tell me how many times have we got the best playing XI on the park? We haven’t. Only during the World Cup we decide to have the best playing XI… The break has to happen in the T20 format and not 50 overs.”And from the [IPL] franchisee point of view, [if] franchises have to suffer, they have to suffer. Indian cricket is the main stakeholder, not the IPL, the IPL is just the byproduct. So if India goes on to win the World Cup, that is the big ovation.”

Heath, Tryon make fifties before Levick four-four seals 105-run win

Northern Diamonds 290 for 8 (Winfield-Hill 75, Heath 71, Tryon 63) beat Western Storm 185 (Levick 4-36) by 105 runsNorthern Diamonds began their defence of the Rachel Heyhoe Flint Trophy with an emphatic 105-run victory against Western Storm at Headingley.Half-centuries from Lauren Winfield-Hill (75), Bess Heath (71) and South African debutant Chloe Tryon (63) took Diamonds to a commanding total of 290 for eight off a rain-reduced 37 overs before leg spinner Katie Levick claimed 4 for 36, including her 300th career wicket, as Storm fell well short of the target. After rain fell throughout the morning, the players finally took to the field at 1pm and Storm’s hopes were immediately raised when Lauren Filer bowled Sterre Kalis for one in the second over. When Filer followed up with the wicket of Diamonds skipper Hollie Armitage, also bowled for one, the hosts were 33 for 2 and looking in trouble on a damp, green pitch.Winfield-Hill was at her pugnacious best however and quickly counter attacked to take the score to 71 when a mix up with Phoebe Turner led to the latter’s ran out for three. If the visitors thought they were back in the game what followed was a brutal statement of intent from England hopeful Heath who proceeded to smash Storm’s bowlers around Headingley as she bludgeoned 71 from 38 balls including nine fours and three sixes in a fourth wicket partnership of 109 off just 67 balls with Winfield-Hill.When Heath was caught behind by off Chloe Skelton the score was 180 for 4 and the stage was set for another superb knock as Winfield-Hill was joined by Tryon. The former’s departure for 75, bowled by Alex Griffiths, left the South African with some work to do, but she marshalled the tail superbly to be last out for 63 off 36 balls in a Diamonds total of 290 for 8.Storm got off to a terrible start losing both openers inside the first two overs as Griffiths (0) and Emma Corney (2) were bowled by Jessica Woolston and Lizzie Scott respectively.Sophie Luff and Fran Wilson staged a good recovery as they took the visitors to 97 before both were dismissed in successive overs with Storm never looking likely to make it a contest after that.Levick, who earlier had Luff stumped for 33, took another when she trapped Gibson in front for 17 to claim her 299th career wicket before Niamh Holland was run out for six.Levick’s 300th came soon after with the stumping of Wraith and she was quickly celebrating her 301st when Sophia Smale was lbw for 0.Scott returned to bowl Filer before Tyron took a stunning catch off Abi Glen off Skelton to wrap the Western Storm innings up for 185.
There remains much unnecessary talk surrounding Jack Grealish’s life away from football, yet focusing in on his performances on the pitch, it’s fair to say the Manchester City man is leaving a lot to be desired.
Plucked from Aston Villa on a then British-record £100m deal back in the summer of 2021, the 29-year-old has scored just 16 goals and provided only 23 assists in 151 games in all competitions.
Of course, judging a player of his ilk purely on goal contributions would be a mistake, with the England star having been central to the club’s treble success, despite only registering five goals and 11 assists that season, with teammate Kyle Walker lauding him as a “nightmare” to play against.
That said, it would be fair to say that the £300k-per-week man has regressed since then, albeit with injuries playing their part, having failed to score a single Premier League goal since December 2023.
With just two goals and five assists to his name in 2024/25 in total, the experienced playmaker has been usurped by the lively Jeremy Doku down the left flank, with the January signing of Omar Marmoush also putting his Etihad future further into doubt.
Jack Grealish's future at Man City
As Caught Offside noted last month, there is set to be something of a ‘squad evolution’ at the Etihad this summer, with Kevin De Bruyne among those looking set to depart amid his expiring contract.
According to the latest reports, Grealish could follow the Belgian in moving on elsewhere at the end of the season, despite the Englishman still having over two years left to run on his existing deal.
The suggestion is that City are willing to accept an offer for their struggling star if their asking price is met, with the wideman said to be ‘unhappy’ at the club at present.
This comes amid reports back in January that Tottenham Hotspur were among those keen on signing Grealish, with it looking as if Guardiola and co are happy to sanction an exit for a player who is now deemed to be worth around £38m, according to Transfermarkt.
Having fallen behind the likes of Marmoush, Doku and Savinho of late – with further competition on the flanks also provided by Phil Foden and the returning Oscar Bobb – Grealish’s exit would seemingly not provide too much of a blow for the Citizens, despite his contribution in recent seasons.

Equally, it looks as if the Manchester side are already brewing a perfect, ready-made replacement in the academy ranks too, in the form of 19-year-old, Emilio Lawrence.
Man City's academy Grealish replacement
Following the success of parachuting Foden and Rico Lewis into the first-team squad in recent years, Guardiola has again turned to the youth ranks this season, with Nico O’Reilly – who scored a brace in the FA Cup triumph over Plymouth Argyle – the standout graduate in 2024/25 to date.
O’Reilly had been a central figure in a blossoming U21 side, prior to his promotion, with the aforementioned Lawrence showing signs that he could well follow suit, amid his dazzling form at Premier League 2 level.
In that competition so far this season, the teenage winger has already chalked up seven goals and a further seven assists in just 17 appearances, with City’s U21s currently five points clear at the top of the table.
The Manchester-born, Scotland youth international has been in the City ranks since signing from Premier League rivals Everton in 2022, with transfer guru Fabrizio Romano describing that capture as another “big statement” for the Etihad side.
Also lauded as a “top talent” by Romano, young Lawrence would be a perfect replacement for Grealish on the left flank, having contributed 17 goals and assists in just 31 games in total for the U21 side, as per Transfermarkt.
An ‘incredibly dangerous forward player’ – as per the club’s official website – Lawrence boasts a mouthwatering combination of fleet-footed skill and electric pace, as well as an obvious end product.
In The Pipeline
Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.
There may well be a desire to dip into the market once again this summer, should Grealish lead what could be a raft of exits, yet with the academy – who have seen the U18s reach the FA Youth Cup semi-finals – currently blossoming, Guardiola should consider handing a chance to those already at the club.
Lawrence may not be the only standout attacker in a frightening youth side, although he’s certainly doing enough to warrant an opportunity at senior level.
