Jos Buttler 'not fussed at all' by ODI series thrashing in Australia

England’s white-ball captain calls on boards to keep all cricket “relevant”

Jos Buttler, England’s limited-overs captain, admitted he was “not fussed at all” about losing 3-0 to Australia in an ODI series he described as a good example of bilateral international cricket losing its relevance. The series, which was not part of the ODI Super League, was originally due to help England’s preparations for their defence of the 50-over World Cup in India, following on from three T20Is which would serve as the curtain-raiser to the Australian summer. But after the T20 World Cup in Australia was postponed from 2020 to 2022 due to Covid, the tour was split in two, and the T20I series was a warm-up for that tournament. With the 2023 ODI World Cup in India postponed from February-March to October-November, the ODI series became an afterthought and was effectively fulfilled due to contractual obligations with broadcasters.Related

Stats – Head and Warner rewrite ODI records at the MCG

The series started only four days after England lifted the T20 World Cup and with their Test squad in Abu Dhabi preparing for a three-match series against Pakistan, England fielded a team that was barely half-strength. They lost all three ODIs and were thrashed by a record margin, 221 runs, in Tuesday’s dead-rubber at the MCG.”It was always going to be a tough series for us, coming off the back of the World Cup,” Buttler said, speaking to the BBC. “It’s just been a few games too far and fair play to Australia, they have outplayed us. It’s not part of the ranking system [Super League] so there’s not as much on the games as there would be.”Any time England play Australia you want to put up good performances, but it’s just been hard. I’m not fussed at all about the results, to be honest. We’ve got exactly what we wanted from [the tour to] Australia.”Steve Harmison, the former England fast bowler, described the series as “meaningless cricket, played in a meaningless way” while working as a pundit for BT Sport, and Buttler implored administrators to “take care” of the global game.”Just to take care of it, find a way to keep it all relevant,” Buttler said when asked for his message to cricket boards. “Maybe the ICC tournaments should be a little bit more spread out: it gives you a little bit more time to prepare and it makes them probably a bit more special when they do come around as well.”The landscape of cricket has changed dramatically over the last few years, and we’re in a different time. Lots of people are talking about how you keep bilateral cricket relevant and I think this series is a good example of how probably not to do it.”I think one of the biggest things is having overlapping series. We’ve got a group of players preparing for a Test series that shortly starts in Pakistan and we’ve got a team playing here at the same time. In the new year, a Test match [in New Zealand] finishes one day, and an ODI series starts the very next day in Bangladesh.”I feel a bit for the players, to be honest – the ones who are young and coming into the game at the moment. You want to play all formats and I don’t think the schedule really gives you that chance at the minute.”

Time to go: Liverpool have an "unplayable" teen who’d send Nunez packing

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s fierce strike signalled a shift in momentum. Liverpool had fallen behind before the break at Villa Park but were regaining their verve as they chased down three points.

It’s that nerve-wracking time of the season, that point in which the worries bed themselves on players who are in contention to lift the Premier League title in May.

Liverpool’s draw against Aston Villa has extended their lead at the top of the table to eight points, although Arsenal now have a game in hand and Arne Slot’s side make the always daunting trip to Manchester City on Sunday. It’s been a decade since the Reds won at the Etihad in the league.

Bumps and blips are part and parcel of a title race. It’s not supposed to be easy and Liverpool are still primed for the run-in across the business months.

Trent’s slightly deflected goal, struck hard and low, marked a shift in momentum. You felt for all the world that the visitors would apply the pressure and take the goods, but then Darwin Nunez missed, and the Reds lost their way.

Why Liverpool should sell Darwin Nunez

Nunez missed. Again. The 25-year-old has scored 39 goals from 131 matches for Liverpool since he was cherry-picked by Jurgen Klopp in 2022, leaving Benfica for a club-record fee rising to £85m.

Never mind the wastefulness, Nunez has averaged 5.5 passes per Premier League match this season at a success rate of 70%. This is deeply alarming, preventing the player from melding into the fluent football that Slot strives for.

Darwin Nunez

It’s for this reason, perhaps more crucially than Nunez’s missed chances, that he should be sold this summer. Slot needs to end this overreliance on Mohamed Salah, whose latest goal-and-assist performance took his tally to 29 goals and 20 assists across all competitions this term. Absurd.

According to Fabrizio Romano – speaking to GIVEMESPORT – Nunez almost left Merseyside last month but was prevented from joining Saudi side Al-Nassr due to Slot not wanting to be left short. This made sense, with everything on the line.

What happens this summer is a different question.

How curious that Nunez has only missed four big chances this season, converting four goals. As per Sofascore, the Uruguay forward had missed 47 chances across his opening two Premier League campaigns, bagging 20 goals.

It’s not good enough, and this supposedly streamlined accuracy in front of goal is actually to the player’s detriment. No longer is his chaotic style providing some semblance of energetic quality to Liverpool’s first team.

Instead, he’s regressed into something wholly insignificant, reduced to once-in-a-while moments. The consistency simply isn’t there, and Slot will no doubt concede that his strong tactical skills, his ability to elevate many members of the Anfield brood, are not enough to bring the ostensible elite level out of Nunez’s recesses.

FSG will no doubt want to sign a new high-class forward this year, irrespective of Salah’s future, with the likes of Alexander Isak being linked with a move to Merseyside at the moment.

Alexander Isak scores for Newcastle

That’s all well and good, but the Swede would cost a sum in the ballpark of £150m, and Liverpool might find that they already have a rising goalscorer already imbued with that certain quality in front of goal. It’s a quality Nunez doesn’t quite have.

Liverpool already have a Nunez upgrade

Liverpool’s academy has gone from strength to strength in recent years, and while Ben Doak and Rio Ngumoha attract a lot of attention, Jayden Danns is a top talent in his own right and could become a mainstay under Slot’s wing in the years to come.

Jayden Danns scores for Liverpool.

A few weeks ago, Danns, 19, joined Championship side Sunderland on a short-term loan deal, looking to provide the promotion hopefuls with some extra firepower to fuel their charge.

Unfortunately, a back problem kept him on Merseyside and he has yet to make his debut for the Black Cats. However, after such a strong start to life in Liverpool, you’d back the teenage talent to hit the ground running when he does recover.

Having made his professional debut for the Reds last term, Danns has found his options limited in his second term, injured for a time and a victim of Slot’s more stringent team selecting than his predecessor.

Saying that, he’s held in high regard and has an ability to score goals no matter the level, no matter the scenario, which suggests that he could replace Nunez for good.

In fact, analyst Ben Mattinson has actually claimed that Danns “is a better finisher than Nunez” and has the athletic skill and all-round robustness to become a major player in the years to come.

Last season, Danns’ brace in the FA Cup against Southampton to secure passage to the fifth round for an injury-hit Liverpool side highlighted his natural finishing ability, with the chipped second strike noticeably carrying the assured finesse that Nunez lacks.

Talent scout Antonio Mango described him as “unplayable” in that one, having come off the bench in the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea only several days before to help Liverpool through extra time, hitting the target twice, completing a dribble and winning two duels.

It’s early days yet, but FSG might feel that they’ve hit the jackpot with this one, for Danns could save the club millions in replacing Nunez and providing Liverpool with a new homegrown hero to fire home goals for Slot’s side.

Liverpool forward Jayden Danns

Already, at this nascent stage, Danns is showcasing natural skills that make him apt for a career laden with goals at the highest level. He plays with freedom and poise, balancing beauty and function.

To think that since making his Redmen debut 13 months ago, this youngster has netted three times from just nine appearances speaks well for his future.

In The Pipeline

Should his time in Sunderland go to plan, Slot may be welcoming a homegrown Nunez replacement back to the fold this summer.

Mayank Agarwal hits the reset button to focus firmly on Karnataka

New captain says India selection will take care of itself if he can score loads of Ranji Trophy runs like he did in 2017-18

Shashank Kishore12-Dec-20221:47

Big Ranji season for Sarfaraz, Malik, Kuldeep and Dhull

Mayank Agarwal isn’t focusing as much on a Test comeback as he is on emulating the kind of Ranji Trophy season he had in 2017-18, when he topped the charts with 1160 runs in 13 innings.Agarwal isn’t part of India’s Test tour of Bangladesh, having endured a slump in form over the past six months. This has coincided with Shubman Gill and Abhimanyu Easwaran doing everything they can to impress the selectors. Added to that is the fact that he’s also been released by his IPL franchise, Punjab Kings, whom he captained earlier this year.Related

Everything you need to know about Ranji Trophy 2022-23

It’s in the midst of all this that Agarwal has been handed Karnataka’s captaincy. The team reached the knockouts of both T20 and 50-overs competition. Now, he’s set to lead them in the Ranji Trophy, replacing his contemporary Manish Pandey, who was removed from the top job following a mediocre 2021-22 first-class season where Karnataka lost out in the quarter-finals.”I’ve been working on emulating what I did in 2017-18, when I had that good season,” Agarwal said in Bengaluru, ahead of Karnataka’s Ranji opener against Services on Tuesday. “I’ve gone back a little bit, looked at those videos, gone through those game plans and worked around that.”For me, that result or the end goal [India selection] will take care of itself. I want to look at my processes, areas I need to improve on and what I need to do to keep performing the way I was doing. And I back myself to deliver those performances.”Agarwal has a strong batting line-up to lean on, with all of R Samarth, Devdutt Padikkal and Pandey in the mix. The only notable absentee is Karun Nair, who has fallen out of favour with the selectors following a bad run of form that stretches back three seasons. However, there were times during the last campaign that he seemed to be rediscovering his touch again.Mayank Agarwal: There are no two ways about it. We want to win trophies for Karnataka•BCCI

The selectors have rewarded 22-year old Nikin Jose for his Vijay Hazare Trophy form – he was Karnataka’s leading run-getter, and Vishal Onat, who has had a stellar run in age-group cricket. One of them could well be handed a debut cap on Tuesday. As he takes over a young team in a transition, Agarwal is mindful of creating an environment similar to the one in 2013-14, when he broke through to make his first-class debut after years of being pigeon-holed as a white-ball player.”We have to keep encouraging them, create a good environment for them to flourish,” Agarwal said. “They’re in the team because of the performances they have put in age-group cricket. Nikin did very well in the Vijay Hazare as well. We want him to continue that form. As a team, we want to have an atmosphere where they can come, learn, execute and flourish, put up match-winning performances for Karnataka and play for the country.”I want to encourage them [youngsters], because they’ve put in performances. They’re skilled, they have the temperament and talent. We want to back them and help them learn. The environment we want to create in the team is one of wanting to win trophies, and we’re hungry for it.”The more we win and the more we enjoy each other’s success, that will come. Each of us has to be part of this environment, it’s not about one or two players coming in and creating that. If 20-25 of us create that, it will all stack up together. And when things stack up, results will take care of itself.”Karnataka last won the Ranji Trophy in 2014-15 and have stumbled in the knockouts for three seasons in a row. In 2018-19 and 2019-20, they lost in the semi-finals, to Saurashtra and Bengal respectively. Last season, they were upset in the quarter-final by Uttar Pradesh. Agarwal doesn’t want the team to be weighed down the baggage of being nearly men.”We’ve spoken of the legacy [of Karnataka cricket] and realised if we keep thinking off winning, winning, winning all the time, it’s not going to happen. That said, we’ve spoken of how hungry we are, but we also have to make a plan and be adaptable. Be disciplined. If we can do that, with the skillsets we have, the results will take care of itself. We are determined to win, there are no two ways about it. We want to win trophies for Karnataka.”

Outclassed by Minteh: 3/10 Newcastle star was not fit to wear the shirt

Newcastle have been knocked out of the FA Cup with their hopes now of a potential cup double seeping away.

They look a 1-0 lead against Brighton, only to be beaten 2-1 after 120 minutes played, with the Seagulls fighting back against the Magpies to send the game to extra-time.

Alexander Isak scored in the 22nd minute from the penalty spot, but goals from former Magpie Yankuba Minteh and Danny Welbeck secured the victory for Brighton.

Eddie Howe’s side held 48% possession, taking 15 shots in the game and creating three big chances. Meanwhile, Brighton held more of the ball with 52% possession, taking more shots with 21 in the game, but creating fewer big chances, only having two in the match.

The game also included two red cards, one for Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon and one for Brighton’s Tariq Lamptey, making for an interesting conclusion to the fixture.

Many Newcastle players dug deep after going down to ten men, but there were still a few poor performances on the day from certain individuals.

Newcastle's main underperformers against Brighton

Joelinton was one of Newcastle’s poorest performers on the day but has been a huge asset for Howe’s side this season, making 29 appearances, scoring four goals, providing one assist and totalling 2,344 minutes played.

The 28-year-old had been out with a knee injury for the past few weeks, but made his return against Brighton, playing 56 minutes, winning just three of his eight ground duels, making four fouls and getting himself a yellow card.

Joelinton also had an error leading to a shot and was dribbled past once, showing the midfield maestro perhaps wasn’t quite at his full sharpness just yet.

The Brazilian’s performance was not the worst for the Magpies. indeed, it was Tino Livramento who played Welbeck onside his extra-time winner. Harvey Barnes, meanwhile, trudged from the field of the play just before the hour mark having not managed a single shot.

That said, it was another Newcastle star – someone who was given a 3/10 match rating by the Northern Echo – after a poor moment of judgement that truly cost Howe’s side the game.

How Anthony Gordon was outclassed by Yankuba Minteh

Brighton’s goalscorer was only sold by Newcastle this summer, with Minteh joining Brighton for a fee of around £33m.

Since joining the Seagulls, the 20-year-old winger has made 26 appearances for the club, scoring six goals and providing four assists.

Funnily enough, it was the ex-Newcastle star who had the better of current Newcastle star, Gordon, who was sent off in the 83rd minute of the game and will now miss the Carabao Cup final due to a three-game suspension.

In the words of Sky Sports’ Keith Downie, it was a “stupid” and “really petulant” error from the winger.

When you compare the two players’ performances on Sunday, both made big mistakes for their side, with Gordon being sent off in the game and Minteh giving away the penalty for Isak to convert in the 22nd minute.

However, in truth, it was the Brighton star who looked more fit to wear the shirt today with Minteh responded by finding the back of the net himself. He also won more ground duels, made more tackles and provided more key passes for his team. Gordon struggled to get involved too much at all, ultimately completing fewer passes than Martin Dubravka (23) with a performance that really let the Toon Army down.

The Everton academy graduate has had the better season of the attacking pair, with the England international making 34 appearances, scoring nine goals and providing six assists so far. However, with Minteh only 20 years old, many will wonder what he could become in the next few years, considering the level he is already demonstrating.

In an ideal world, Newcastle could have kept Minteh in the summer, deploying a front three of Gordon, Minteh and Isak.

But the Magpies, of course, were unable to keep hold of the youngster due to PSR, which has now seen him come back to bite them, playing his part in knocking them out of the FA Cup.

BOM INÍCIO DO RED BULL BRAGANTINO

PRESSÃO DO BRAGA CONTINUAVA

RED BULL INICIA MELHOR A SEGUNDA ETAPA E MARCA DUAS VEZES

Goals from Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto, Levi Colwill and Marc Cucurella downed Southampton in what was an imperious attacking display, with the home side attempting 19 shots on goal and enjoying the bulk of possession.

That being said, the match was also subject to protests from supporters over BlueCo’s ownership of the club, with Maresca urging fans to trust the process in response.

Chelsea manager EnzoMarescabefore the match

“The only thing I can say is that in this moment the fans have to trust,” said Maresca on Chelsea fan protests.

“We’re in the right process and the right direction. Since we started, we’ve been top four most games of the season. The fans have to trust the players. They are doing a huge effort every day to bring this club to the Champions League.”

Chelsea remain trophyless since Clearlake Capital’s takeover of the club in 2022, despite spending millions in the transfer market, but reports suggest that they are set to splash the cash again on bolstering the spine of Maresca’s squad this summer.

Reliable journalist Simon Phillips expects BlueCo to “go big” on a new goalkeeper, defender and striker later this year, with the journalist even claiming Trevoh Chalobah could be offered as a makeweight in Chelsea talks for Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace.

Between the sticks, goalkeeping duo Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen have made notable errors recently, attracting criticism as a result, and the west Londoners are believed to be in the market for a new shot-stopper as a result.

Mike Penders is set to join Chelsea this summer, while Djordje Petrovic and Kepa Arrizabalaga are both out on loan, but that hasn’t stopped them from weighing up more options.

Chelsea hold internal talks over summer deal for Aaron Ramsdale

As per Football Transfers, £120,000-per-week Southampton keeper Aaron Ramsdale is now on Chelsea’s agenda.

Southampton's AaronRamsdalelooks dejected after the match

It is believed that Chelsea have internally debated the idea of signing Ramsdale this summer, with the Englishman potentially looking for a way out of St. Mary’s if they’re relegated from the top flight.

The 26-year-old was attracting interest from Maresca’s side last summer as an option, but he eventually elected to make the switch down south for guaranteed first-team football after being left out in the cold by Mikel Arteta at Arsenal, in favour of David Raya.

Described as “phenomenal” at times by David Seaman, Ramsdale made 89 appearances in all competitions for the Gunners before leaving last year. As of now, it is unclear how much Southampton would demand to sell if they’re relegated.

It’s something Rohit alluded to after the ODI series loss in Bangladesh, when he expressed displeasure at players pulling up with injuries repeatedly despite being passed fit.”We need to try and get to the bottom of it,” Rohit had said. “I don’t know what exactly it is. Maybe they’re playing too much cricket. We need to try and monitor those guys, because it’s important to understand when they come for India, they need to be a 100%, in fact more than 100%.”The cases of Deepak Chahar, who was injured for much of 2022, Jasprit Bumrah, who is recovering from a stress fracture on his back, and Ravindra Jadeja, who is recovering from an ankle injury, are learnt to have been deliberated upon.2:11

How should India manage Bumrah’s workload going forward?

The NCA’s medical team is understood to have submitted a roadmap on workload and injury management. In accordance with the new plan, a fitness and workload roadmap will be customised for each of the central pool of players, and work has already begun for it.In addition to Yo-Yo tests, the NCA panel also recommended the addition of Dexa scans to add another “scientific layer” – in the words of a BCCI official – of testing before determining if players are fit to play. The Dexa scan is the international standard for measuring body composition and bone health – a ten-minute test that measures total body fat and includes the exact breakdown of bone mass, fat tissue and muscle in the body. One of the other recommendations was that emerging players would “have to play substantial” amount of domestic cricket before becoming eligible for selection to the national team, a BCCI press statement said. The selectors believe this would make the players be available for all formats, and not prioritise one over the others.Another reason for the recommendation is to ensure players are properly conditioned before entering the system. The selectors, in the past, haven’t been averse to picking new players straight after a good IPL season. But with new players – like T Natarajan and Varun Chakravarthy, for example – missing more cricket than they have played in the past couple of years, because of injuries followed by treatment, rehabilitation, etc, have been a cause for concern.
