Uncapped legspinner Rashmi Silva has been named in Sri Lanka’s 15-member squad for the Commonwealth Games which is scheduled to start later this month. Silva made her ODI debut in the home series against India earlier this month and is uncapped in T20Is, which is the format for the competition to be held in Birmingham.Wicketkeeper-batter Kaushani Nuthyangana, Hansima Karunaratne, left-arm seamer Tharika Sewwandi and Sathya Sandeepani have been left out from the squad that played at home against India.Teenager Vishmi Gunaratne, who made her debut in the CWG Qualifier in January 2022, is also part of the squad. In the second T20I against India in Dambulla, she made her highest score of 45 in the format as she put up an 87-run opening stand with captain Chamari Athapaththu.Batter Harshitha Samarawickrama also finds a place in the squad despite having a quiet series against India, possibly on the back of her performances in the qualifiers where she was Sri Lanka’s second-highest run scorer. The Sri Lankan middle order also features the in-form Nilakshi de Silva, Hasini Perera and Kavisha Dilhari. The experienced duo of Udeshika Prabodhani and Ama Kanchana will lead the seam attack which also features Achini Kulasuriya. Fabrizio Romano: West Ham want "skilful" forward with 24 goals in 2024/25

West Ham United are interested in signing a “skilful” forward with 24 goals during the 2024/25 season, according to Fabrizio Romano.

West Ham eyeing new attacker in January

Graham Potter picked up his first win as West Ham boss on Tuesday evening, with the Irons defeating Fulham 3-2 at the London Stadium.

The Hammers went into the game without a recognised centre-forward, with Mohammed Kudus, Carlos Soler, Tomas Soucek and Lucas Paqueta making up the front four.

Soler, Soucek and Paqueta all got on the scoresheet, though, with West Ham currently without Niclas Fullkrug, Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio. Fullkrug was the latest attacker to pick up an injury, with Potter describing the German’s latest setback as “significant”.

“Fair to say it is a significant one. When a player pulls up like that, you know that something fairly serious has happened. It is still early in terms of full diagnosis but nevertheless a significant one, and a number of weeks. A number of weeks probably leads up to months, yes.”

Asked whether or not Fullkrug’s injury will result in West Ham bringing in a new striker before the deadline, Potter said that there is a “logical rational to do something”.

“I would not say [it is] imperative. Obviously with the situation with Mic as well, there is certainly a logical rational to do something. But it is not quite as simple as that. I would not want to make the wrong decision or do something for the sake of it in this window.”

West Ham now in pole position to sign "experienced" Rangers attacker

He’s enjoying an impressive season…

ByTom Cunningham Jan 15, 2025

A number of forwards have been linked with moves to the London Stadium in recent days, including Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford.

Nottingham Forest’s Taiwo Awoniyi is another under consideration, whereas West Ham had a recent bid rejected for Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran, and are planning a January loan bid for Marseille striker Elye Wahi.

The club also appear to have one eye on the future and have been linked with an up-and-coming gem who has been scoring with ease in 2024/25.

West Ham interested in Celtic forward Daniel Cummings

According to Romano, West Ham are keen on signing Celtic forward Daniel Cummings, who is out of contract with the Hoops this year. The Hammers aren’t the only side interested in Cummings, though, with Brighton & Hove Albion also named by Romano.

The 18-year-old appears to be a star in the making with 24 goals in 24 games for Celtic at youth level, and he has previously attracted the interest of Burnley, Fulham, Ipswich Town, Sunderland and Wolves.

Cummings, dubbed “skilful” and “resilient” by The Young Team, could also cost just £250,000 in cross-border compensation, and by the looks of things, a move to the London Stadium is one to keep an eye on in 2025.

Nottingham Forest make £22m bid to sign ace with same agent as Gibbs-White

In what could only push them further towards Champions League qualification, Nottingham Forest have now reportedly submitted a hefty bid to sign a Premier League forward.

Nottingham Forest transfer news

Those in the Midlands are rightly acting with all the ambition in the world after pushing into the Premier League’s top four. Without a defeat since the beginning of December, they’re better placed than ever in the Premier League to set their sights on a certain calibre of stars. It’s a rise which has already seen Forest linked with a number of impressive names, from Alex Baena all the way to Luiz Henrique.

Villarreal winger Alex Baena.

Reports have even gone as far as to suggest that Forest have activated the £50.7m release clause in pursuit of Baena as they look to fend off any competition and secure the arrival of the Villarreal midfielder this month.

Baena’s arrival would be quite the statement of intent from a side clearly eager to ensure that this season’s run is not just a flash in the pan and instead a permanent feature in England’s top flight.

The Villarreal man isn’t the only one that those at the City Ground are reportedly willing to splash out on either. According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Nottingham Forest have submitted a bid worth £22m to sign Yoane Wissa from Brentford this month. As far as the Bees are concerned though, they’ll have to do better than that to secure the forward’s signature.

Whether Forest increase their bid to sign Wissa remains to be seen, but there’s no denying just how much of an impact he could make in the second half of the campaign. Given the fact that the Brentford man also has the same agent as Morgan Gibbs-White, personal terms could be easier than they otherwise would have been to agree.

"Remarkable" Wissa would be excellent signing

Amid doubts over Taiwo Awoniyi’s future, signing another forward certainly wouldn’t be a bad idea, especially if it is Wissa who enters the City Ground this month. The 28-year-old could be an instant upgrade on the West Ham-linked Awoniyi and would likely even force Nuno Espirito Santo into a change of system to accommodate a partnership between the Congo man and Chris Wood.

Two players outperforming their expected goals rate, Wissa and Wood could form one of the deadliest duos in the Premier League.

Those in the Premier League are already well aware of just how well the Brentford man can work in a partnership, given how successful he’s been alongside the equally impressive Bryan Mbeumo this season. Now, he could replicate that with the New Zealand international at the City Ground.

Previously described as “remarkable” by Brentford boss Thomas Frank, Wissa could have quite the decision to make in the closing weeks of the January transfer window if Forest come calling once again.

Khawaja: ODIs 'dying a slow death' but Tests remain strong

The Australia opener can see the rise in T20 leagues squeezing out 50-over cricket

AAP and ESPNcricinfo staff22-Jul-20221:59

Ehantharajah – Stokes’ ODI retirement a seismic turn of events

Usman Khawaja believes ODI cricket is “dying a slow death” and he’s not surprised England’s Ben Stokes has quit the format.Stokes, 31, brought the demands of international cricket on players into sharp focus when he confirmed his 105th ODI appearance for England against South Africa would be his last.Stokes, who has taken over as England’s Test captain, said authorities can’t treat players like “cars” and there was “too much cricket rammed in” to realistically compete in all three formats – Test, T20Is and ODIs – at international level.Test opener Khawaja, who hasn’t played limited-overs cricket for Australia since 2019, said it’s clear to him something has to give on the international calendar – and it’s most likely to be 50-over matches.Related

“My own personal opinion – I know a few of the guys are very similar – you’ve got Test cricket, which is the pinnacle, you’ve got T20 cricket, which obviously has leagues around the world, great entertainment, everyone loves it, and then there’s one-day cricket,” he said.”I feel like that’s probably the third-ranked out of all of them. I think personally one-day cricket is dying a slow death…there’s still the World Cup, which I think is really fun and it’s enjoyable to watch, but other than that, even myself personally, I’m probably not into one-day cricket as much either.”Khawaja’s thoughts were expressed as Cricket Australia released tickets for this summer’s international calendar on Friday. That schedule opens with ODIs against Zimbabwe and New Zealand, all to be played in Townsville and Cairns in September ahead of October’s Men’s T20 World Cup.It’s a far cry from the glory days of 50-over cricket in the 1980s and 1990s when an annual triangular series in Australia packed stadiums and turned into a television winner for Cricket Australia and the Nine Network. The future of ODI cricket was also brought into sharp focus when South Africa put their World Cup hopes in jeopardy by withdrawing from their series against Australia in January to prioritise their new T20 leagueKhawaja said while he didn’t think it was impossible to be a three-format player in the modern era, it wouldn’t be an easy life.”Not impossible, very tough,” Khawaja said. “So much travelling. If you’re playing all three forms of the game, you’re not at home at all really. And then the demands on your body, mentally, physically and a lot of the guys might be playing also the IPL”There’s a lot of cricket going on. Yes, you get to pick and choose, I guess, in certain respects what you want to play but look it can be very tough at the moment.”However, he retains a bright view on the future of Test cricket ahead of a summer where Australia will face West Indies and South Africa as they push for a place in next year’s World Test Championship final.”The majority of people I talk to still love Test cricket,” he said. “It’s my favourite format. Think Test cricket still has a very strong presence so don’t really see that going anywhere. Think both [Tests and T20] can be quite easily balanced, but then you ask yourself the question does one-day cricket give.”

Me colocou, e fui feliz marcando – disse o autor do gol do Peixe em entrevista à Conmebol TV.

Liverpool now seriously interested in "incredible" £60m Premier League star

Liverpool are now seriously interested in signing an “incredible” £60m Premier League star, according to a report.

Slot's side setting the pace

The Reds secured a dramatic late victory away at Brentford on Saturday, with Darwin Nunez’s quick-fire double securing an important three points in the Premier League title race.

Arsenal dropped two points despite going two goals up against Aston Villa later in the day, making the victory even sweeter for Arne Slot’s side, who are now six points clear at the top of the table, with a game in hand at their disposal.

Things are certainly looking up for Liverpool, but FSG are still tasked with securing the long-term futures of three of their star players, with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah yet to commit to new deals.

Liverpool now want "astonishing" forward to replace Salah; Slot loves him

The Reds are eyeing an attacker who plays for one of Europe’s top clubs.

ByDominic Lund Jan 18, 2025

With reports suggesting Salah is now on the verge of signing for Al-Hilal, the Reds may have to step up their pursuit of a replacement over the next few months – and they have now identified a potential target.

According to a report from Rousing The Kop, Liverpool are now seriously interested in signing Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo in the summer, having been impressed by his performances in the Premier League this season.

Brentford's BryanMbeumolooks dejected after the match

A January exit is not on the cards, but the Merseyside club are now closely monitoring the situation ahead of the summer transfer window.

However, FSG may have to break the bank to get a deal done, as the Bees are set to hold out for a fee of £50-60m for the forward.

The Reds are not the only Premier League side vying for Mbeumo’s signature, as Newcastle United and Arsenal are also holding interest, which could drive his price up further.

Mbeumo could be a fantastic signing

The Brentford star received high praise from reporter Dom Smith earlier this season, who suggested he has played a vital role in the Bees’ impressive form this season.

The Cameroon international has notched 13 goals and three assists in 22 Premier League outings this season, having made year-on-year improvements since making his top-flight breakthrough in the 2021/22 campaign.

At 25 years old, the France-born winger could now be ready to take the next step in his career by signing for one of the Premier League’s top clubs, so it is promising news that Liverpool are in the race for his signature.

Lisa Keightley will leave her position as England Women’s head coach at the end of the summer after deciding not to pursue the option of a contract extension.Keightley was appointed in late 2019, and guided England to the final of the 2022 ODI World Cup. She also oversaw runs to the semi-finals of the 2020 T20 World Cup and Commonwealth Games, where England were beaten in the bronze-medal match on Sunday. She will continue to coach the team until the end of the home season, with limited-overs series against India scheduled next month. It is understood the decision to part ways was mutually agreed on before the Commonwealth Games. The ECB will now begin the process of recruiting a new head coach ahead of the next Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa in February.Although England failed to defend the World Cup they won in 2017, and missed out on successive T20 titles, Keightley’s period in charge was marked by an injection of younger talent into the side, with Sophia Dunkley establishing herself as a first-choice pick and the likes of Issy Wong, Alice Capsey and Freya Kemp coming through.Jonathan Finch, the ECB’s director of England women’s cricket, said: “We are incredibly grateful for the commitment and passion Lisa has shown over the last two-and-a-half years in the role. We have seen increased competition for places over the last 12 months and the squad Lisa leaves is an exciting blend of youth and experience.”Leading an international team is challenging at the best of times. It is more challenging during a pandemic, and Lisa has been able to continue the development of the team during what has been the toughest period we have faced off the field.”Clare Connor, ECB interim chief executive, said: “I’d like to place on record our sincere thanks to Lisa for all her efforts across the last two-and-a-half years.”Lisa was always a fierce opponent when she represented Australia, and she’s brought that same pride, passion and will to win into everything she’s done with the England Women’s team.”The team have enjoyed working with her immensely and I know they’ll join me in wishing her all the very best for her next challenge.”Keightley’s departure follows that of her senior assistant and fellow Australian, Tim Macdonald, who announced in June that he would be leaving after the Commonwealth Games to take up an assistant coaching post with the Perth Scorchers and Western Australian men’s teams.
