Arsenal could sign one of the "best CMs in the world" after Edu leaves

Any hopes of a straightforward Premier League title race for Arsenal this season were all but obliterated in the weeks leading up to the last international break.

Mikel Arteta’s side were beset with ill-timed injuries and silly suspensions, and right as the wheels felt like they were coming off, Sporting Director Edu Gaspar announced he was leaving the club.

Fortunately, things on the pitch have seen a marked improvement over the last week or so, and while we still don’t know the impact the Brazilian’s departure may have, there are reasons to be optimistic.

In fact, recent reports have indicated his exit has now provided the club with another opportunity to approach an exciting international the club have been interested in for some time.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a recent report from Caught Offside, talks between Arsenal and Real Sociedad’s Director of Football Roberto Olabe over him potentially replacing Edu next season have seen the Gunners bring up the topic of La Real’s star midfielder, Martin Zubimendi.

Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi

The report has revealed that the Spaniard remains a key target for the Gunners in the upcoming transfer windows, and while they’ll continue to face stiff competition from the likes of Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Barcelona, recruiting Olabe could give them the edge.

A price is not mentioned in the story, but it has been widely reported since his failed move to Liverpool in the summer that the talented midfielder has a €60m release clause in his contract, which currently converts to just under £50m.

It would be costly and complicated to sign Zubimendi next year, but given his incredible talent, Arsenal have to try, and if Caught Offside is to be believed, they may have a massive advantage next year thanks to the exit of Edu.

Why Arsenal should sign Zubimendi

Due to his incredible ability and plentiful experience, there are several enticing reasons why Arsenal should be looking to sign Zubimendi next year. Still, perhaps one of the most important is actually down to their own players.

For example, while Thomas Partey has put in arguably his best performances for the club since joining this season, and Jorginho has shown he’s still got it in the last two games, both players are on the wrong side of 30.

The former is 31 and has an abysmal injury record that has seen him miss 80 games for club and country since moving to North London, while the latter is set to turn 33 in less than three weeks, and while he could maintain his form for another campaign, it would be irresponsible for Arteta and Co to gamble on that fact.

Thomas Partey comes off for Jorginho.

So, it would appear as if the club need to sign a new midfielder capable of playing as an eight and six to develop alongside and compete with Declan Rice over the coming years and, at just 25 years old, the Sociedad ace fits that bill.

However, it should go without saying that it’s not just his age that makes the San Sebastian-born ace an appealing prospect, but also his raw ability and skillset.

For example, just last year, Spain manager Luis de la Fuente described the La Real star as one of the “best central midfielders in the world.”

It’s not hard to see where he’s coming from, especially as it was only in July that he came on at half-time in the Euro 2024 Final for an injured Rodri and helped his team to their fourth continental title at the expense of England.

Moreover, the 5 foot 11 dynamo has 207 appearances under his belt for Sociedad, in which he’s scored nine goals, provided nine assists and made his Copa del Rey debut in the 2020 final, starring in defensive midfield and helping his team win, so there should be no concerns over his mentality or ability to handle pressure.

Ultimately, with Partey and Jorginho only getting older, Arsenal will need to rejuvenate their central midfield options sooner rather than later, and based on his form for club and country, Zubimendi looks like the perfect candidate.

Therefore, the club should do what they can to secure his signature before someone else beats them to it.

Arsenal could eclipse Declan Rice fee with £112m bid for "superb" forward

It would be their most expensive ever transfer.

Samson's got talent; Rohit wants him to 'maximise' it, and fast

“You need that kind of shot-making ability” at the T20 World Cup in Australia later this year, says the India captain

Sidharth Monga23-Feb-2022

Rohit Sharma: “It’s up to Sanju now to understand how he wants to utilise the talent and how he can maximise it”•BCCI

“That guy has got talent, man.””I mean whenever we have seen him bat, he has just produced an innings where everyone goes over the moon watching that innings. He has got the skillset to succeed.”How many times did you hear this sentiment being expressed about Rohit Sharma, with a touch of wistfulness, ten years ago? It could have been a pundit or a fan or captain saying this about Rohit, who was yet to translate that talent into results at the top level. To the extent that Rohit started to hate the word “talent”.Related

Instead, the year is 2022, and Rohit, now having gone through that process of translating talent into runs, is saying this about someone. You must take notice.Sanju Samson has been given one more chance by India to realise his potential at the international level. Go on, listen to how much in awe of Samson Rohit is.”His back-foot play is superb,” Rohit said on the eve of the first game of the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka. “Some of the shots you might have seen in the IPL, the pick-up pull, the cut shots, standing and delivering over the bowler’s head. Those kind of shots are not easy to play. And I believe when you go to Australia [where the next T20 World Cup is], you need that kind of shot-making ability.”Samson definitely has it in him. I just wish him the best and hope that he utilises his potential to the maximum.”Samson has played ten T20Is and an ODI for India over a span of six years. He played four of these as part of a second-string side that went to Sri Lanka last year. His highest score in the 11 internationals is 46. At domestic level, he is not quite the rounded batter that Rohit was in first-class cricket, but he is different gravy in T20 cricket. He T20 cricket, and he has shown he has the skillset of doing some really difficult things in T20 cricket. That’s why, despite not having great traditional numbers, Samson is rated.”That is the whole point about this sport,” Rohit said. “A lot of people have the skillset, a lot of people have the talent. But it’s how you utilise that talent that is the most critical part. I think it’s up to Sanju now to understand how he wants to utilise the talent and how he can maximise it.”Because as a team, as a team management, we see a lot of potential, we see a lot of talent, and we see a lot of match-winning ability in that individual. I hope we give him the confidence whenever he gets the opportunity to play for us. I hope he understands that. Definitely he is in consideration [for Australia], which is why he is part of the team.”As Samson makes his comeback, these words must really buoy him. At the same time, you wonder if the lack of patience in the past has deflated him. For the way Samson plays, it comes with an inherent risk. To do the things he does, you need to play low-percentage cricket. To be able to do that, the team has to live with early dismissals. The last time Samson played in a full-strength Indian side, the message was to be aggressive right from the start, but that kind of batting needs backing and security and sometimes doesn’t come off in the first series. He found himself out after that. Now, the captain and the chairman of selectors have publicly backed Samson and brought him back despite there being two wicketkeepers – plus KL Rahul – in the set-up already. If it translates into role clarity and chances in the middle, this might just be Samson’s best chance to build an international career.

Western Australia break 23-year Sheffield Shield drought as final ends in a draw

Aaron Hardie finished 174 not out before the game was called off at lunch on the final day

Western Australia claimed their first Sheffield Shield title in 23 years after a brilliant 174 not out from Aaron Hardie batted Victoria out of the match with the final called off as a draw at lunch on the final day at the WACA ground in Perth.WA finished 7 for 400 in their second innings at lunch on the final day as the teams agreed to end the contest, with the hosts claiming the title on bonus points after outperforming Victoria in the first 100 overs of the first two innings.Hardie made the third-highest score by a WA batter in a Shield final, but was edged out for player of the match honours by Sam Whiteman who was rewarded for his scores of 85 and 123.It is WA’s first Shield title since 1998-99, having only played in two losing finals inbetween. Head coach Adam Voges claimed the rare title treble after leading Perth Scorchers to the BBL title, and WA claiming the Marsh Cup 50-over crown and Shield title. He became just the second Australian men’s domestic coach to achieve the feat after Andrew McDonald did it in 2018-19.The final day petered out into a stalemate as WA had no intention of declaring after claiming the bonus point lead, with a draw enough to secure the title. WA took more wickets and made runs in the first 100 overs of each of the first two innings of the game to earn the right to win the title if the game ended in a draw. They scored 77 runs in 32 overs in the morning session of day five for the loss of just one wicket. Jon Holland trapped Joel Paris plumb lbw with a yorker-length delivery in the sixth over. Two overs later, Matt Kelly chipped Holland straight to midwicket where Will Pucovski grassed a very simple catch. That was the last hope Victoria had of bowling WA out and chasing something under 450 on the final day.Hardie continued his disciplined innings, looking more and more impenetrable as his vigil passed the six-hour mark.Aaron Hardie celebrates his 150•Getty Images

He brought up his maiden first-class 150 with a lovely square drive off Mitch Perry and began picking off WA’s highest ever scores in Shield finals. He launched Matt Short down the ground for his only six of the innings to go past Marcus Harris (158) and Tom Moody (162), but as lunch loomed it became clear the match was going to be called off and his chance to pass Adam Gilchrist (189) in second on the list behind Mike Veletta (262) began to fade.Kelly defended with ease to finish 21 off 85 balls while Hardie finished on 174 not out from 317 deliveries with 25 fours and a six. Victoria’s bowlers ran out of puff with Will Sutherland delivering a monumental 64.1 overs for the match to finish with six wickets, having been unfortunate not to have Hardie given lbw on 15 on the fourth afternoon.Lunch brought emotional celebrations from WA’s players and staff in the rooms with captain Shaun Marsh finally getting his hands on the Shield trophy, having debuted for WA in 2001 just two years after their last triumph in 1999.

Man City want him: £100m Newcastle sale would be a bigger blow than Isak

Newcastle United know that 2025 is going to be a big year. This year has been one of frustration, with injuries ruining the end of last season, PSR ruining Eddie Howe’s summer transfer plans and inconsistency ruining the fans’ hopes that a Champions League place can be reclaimed.

There’s no doubt that the Magpies have enjoyed an impressive and blistering rise from the dredges of the Premier League to European competition over the past several years, but progress has faltered and frozen in recent months.

While the Tynesiders pushed for the likes of Marc Guehi and Anthony Elanga during the off-season, they failed to secure their targets, and the knock-on effect is being keenly felt.

Saying that, PIF did manage to keep a grip on the club’s holy trinity: Anthony Gordon, Alexander Isak, and Bruno Guimaraes.

That was then, and this is now. One of Europe’s biggest clubs are making overtures of their own as they push to sign a Newcastle superstar.

Man City want Newcastle superstar

As per The Times, Manchester City are interested in signing Guimaraes in 2025, with either a January or summer deal believed to be on the cards.

Bruno Guimaraes against Manchester City

The Brazil international has been one of United’s most influential players since joining from Lyon for £40m in January 2022, vital in shaping Howe’s team and reaching heights that were unimaginable only months before.

While Guimaraes signed a new five-year deal at St. James’ Park only a couple of months ago, it’s understood that he has a £100m release clause in his contract, though whether Newcastle will consider a lower bid is uncertain at this stage.

He’s racked up 125 appearances for the Magpies and has registered 33 goal contributions across the span of his career on English shores, and though Newcastle have been forced to contend with the possibility of several damaging sales this year, Guimaraes’s departure would perhaps be the biggest blow – even more so than Isak.

A bigger blow than losing Alexander Isak

The fact that Manchester City have placed Guimaraes at the top of their shopping list as they look to complete a much-needed midfield rebuild speaks volumes concerning the 27-year-old’s ability.

Hailed for his “world-class” quality by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Guimaraes has been one of the most consistent midfielders in the Premier League, and this is clear when looking at the player’s metrics across his four campaigns in English football.

With a wonderful range of passing, elite combativeness and an unceasing athleticism that lets him drive forward with penetrative runs, break into the rim of the final third and influence play, Guimaraes is possibly even Newcastle’s most prized possession.

Of course, Isak would likely claim that he is the cream of the Toon crop, for he is one of the finest goalscorers in the Premier League.

Alexander Isak celebrates vs Liverpool

Isak, 25, joined Newcastle a little later than his South American teammate but completed a club-record £63m transfer from Real Sociedad that stands to this day.

Injuries have been his biggest weakness, but the Sweden international’s record of 42 goals and eight assists from 82 fixtures – 69 starts – is evidence enough that he is worthy of a place at the spearpoint of any first-class team on the continent.

But Guimaraes is simply too dynamic and versatile to regard as anything other than the Magpies’ most valuable piece of silver. As per FBref, he actually ranks among the top 16% of midfielders across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for goals scored, the top 5% for assists, the top 8% for shot-creating actions, the top 8% for progressive passes and the top 2% for successful take-ons per 90.

Isak’s persistent injury issues suggest that Newcastle need to sign a new striker, a situation compounded by Callum Wilson’s fresh layoff and looming contract expiry. Newcastle will need to find a new number nine, and they will.

Guimaraes and Gordon have been tied down to contract extensions but Isak appears hesitant to engage in prolonging his own stay at St. James’ Park, and with Arsenal known to hold a concrete interest in completing a move, it does feel like one that could happen in 2025.

Of course, the flip side to all this is that Guimaraes’ prospective sale – or indeed Isak’s – would serve to fill the Newcastle coffers to the brim and hand Howe and his transfer team ample resources to complete some much-needed sprucing of the squad.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe

But at what cost? Though it’s infeasible to think that Newcastle are exempt from losing their prized players, especially if they fail to qualify for European competition for the second season running, Guimaraes has only recently signed a long-term deal and must now be allowed to strengthen a Premier League rival.

Selling Isak would be a damaging blow to the outfit, but losing Guimaraes would be more detrimental still.

They were arguably lucky to escape Ibrox with a 1-1 draw against Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday, which did little to raise hopes among supporters, but Postecoglou actually praised the “character” of his team to claw back a result after going 1-0 down at a very atmospheric ground.

“We can’t dismiss the situation we’re in at the moment. We’re very limited at the moment what we can do from a team perspective, there’s a lot of players playing a lot of games, and they’re giving their all, but they’re going to lack a little bit of sharpness as we cannot give them a rest,” said Postecoglou on the problems at Spurs right now.

“Within that context it’s about making sure that there’s some basics in our game that we push through.

“Like I say, you look at the Chelsea game and elements of that were brilliant for us in the way we played our football. The ability to play at that level is still there. It’s just last night, and we’ve got to keep it in context, it’s a difficult venue, it’s always difficult for any team going there in Europe historically to get a result and you need to fight. I just felt there were times we weren’t as committed to winning seconds balls and doing a lot of things you need to do when you go to Ibrox. We lost those battles which allowed them to sort of get into the game.

“The flip side of that is when you’re 1-0 down there it’s awfully hard to turn around because the volume of the stadium goes up by 100 decibels and it’s hard to claw back. I thought we showed real character.”

Postecoglou’s side travel to St. Mary’s next, and he’ll be hoping for nothing but a win against the struggling Premier League side, even if they’ll be without a host of key players.

Fluminense president contacts Richarlison

Tottenham will be without £60 million striker Richarlison, among the plethora of absentees, and his future has been thrust into question lately.

GiveMeSport’s Ben Jacobs reported earlier this week that Richarlison is prepared to leave Spurs in 2025 after originally deciding to stay and fight for his place in the summer, and it is now believed Fluminense are looking to take advantage of this.

According to South American news outlet Itatiaia Esporte, Fluminense’s own club president has personally contacted Richarlison behind-the-scenes, as they kickstart a “major operation” to sign the Brazil international as early as January.

While it’s described as a “difficult deal” to do, they’ve set their sights high, and want the 27-year-old on a one-year loan with the option to buy him outright.

The club are set for “several meetings” over this transfer, as they attempt to construct an agreement which satisfies both Daniel Levy and the player, with Richarlison apparently “willing” to make the move there.

Bangladesh's chance to break new ground in South Africa

Can Tamim Iqbal’s men win their first ever ODI in SA, or will Temba Bavuma’s team hold on to a proud 20-year record?

Mohammad Isam17-Mar-2022

Litton Das’ game has hit new heights•BCB

Big pictureSouth Africa haven’t allowed Bangladesh even a whiff of a chance in 20 years of cricket at home. But as Tamim Iqbal said before leaving Dhaka, and Russell Domingo two days before the first ODI in Centurion, they are here with more than just hope.Bangladesh will always take inspiration from the miracle of Mount Maunganui and though it was a Test win, they will try to condense that calm and confidence and push harder than ever before in order to secure their first ODI win in South Africa. The home side will take heart from their series win against India in January, which followed an indifferent period for them in the 50-over format. Last year, South Africa lost to Pakistan at home, drew an away series in Ireland and then lost to Sri Lanka. The hosts will be at full strength. Many of their first-choice picks are part of IPL squads and even though the tournament starts on March 26, they will only depart once this series is over. South Africa, who have only won three matches out of 10 in the ODI Super League, will need all the talent they have at their disposal to make the climb up the table.Bangladesh are at full strength too after a jaded Shakib Al Hasan was convinced to make the trip. It allows Tamim to stick to a tried-and-tested combination with five frontline bowlers. Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Afif Hossain will add depth to the batting line-up at Nos. 7 and 8, something Bangladesh have often wanted when touring bowler-friendly places like South Africa.Litton Das and Mushfiqur Rahim’s rich vein of recent form adds to the sense of Bangladesh optimism.
