Turner had helped lift WA from 7 for 81 to a respectable 218 but it wasn’t enough

Tasmania overcame a pre-match Covid delay and a gutsy Ashton Turner century to post a four-wicket one-day cup win over Western Australia at the WACA Ground.Turner scored 100 off 121 balls to help lift WA from 7 for 81 to a respectable 218. In reply, Tasmania reached the target in 43.5 overs, with captain Jordan Silk’s unbeaten 90 leading the way.The start of Friday’s match was delayed by an hour after southern Tasmania was thrown into a snap three-day lockdown.Although the bulk of the Tasmanian squad flew into Perth from South Australia after featuring in a Sheffield Shield match in Adelaide, Tom Andrews, Jake Doran, Riley Meredith, and Mitch Owen had all flown in from Tasmania. It meant they were told to leave the ground until WA Police could confirm the quartet hadn’t visited any exposure sites in Tasmania.”It was a bit of a funny one,” Meredith said. “I left the hotel, got to the ground, was walking up the stairs to the box there, and I got the palm out from the team manager and the physio, and they said, ‘nah, turn back, you’ve got to get in the car and go home’.”We spoke to our manager and let him know where we’d been [in Tasmania]. And then we just had a little hour to ourselves, which was nice, and then straight back to the ground.”Western Australia slumped to 3 for 16 and 7 for 81 after electing to bat, before Turner and Andrew Tye (44 off 31) resurrected the innings.Tasmania quick Riley Meredith did the early damage, before veteran Peter Siddle struck later in the innings, including the key wicket of Turner.Tasmania were looking shaky at 2 for 22 after Caleb Jewell and Macalister Wright departed early. But mature knocks from Silk, opener Ben McDermott (57), and Beau Webster (39) ensured they reeled in the victory target with 37 balls to spare. Tye was the pick of the WA bowlers with figures of 4 for 39 off 10 overs.”I guess the batting was a bit of a train wreck. You don’t win many games from 7-80,” Turner said. “We fell quite a few runs short. We expect ourselves to be better than that, and to post a bigger score after winning the toss and batting first.”
Manchester United have not had the best of starts to the new Premier League season, and their weekend defeat to West Ham United proved to be the final straw as Erik ten Hag was sacked by the club.
The Dutchman was initially backed by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS in the transfer market, having guided the Red Devils to the FA Cup last summer amid a disappointing 8th-place finish in the league.
But Ten Hag, who signed a new deal over the summer, eclipsed the unwanted record of Man Utd’s worst start to a Premier League season, making a poorer start than the previous year.
Ruud van Nistelrooy is now in interim charge of the club, with the former striker now surely a prime candidate to replace his fellow Dutchman in the role full-time.
But who else could United turn to? Here are some of the options facing INEOS and Ratcliffe as another manager bites the dust…

Odds correct as of Ten Hag sacking announcement
1 Ruud van Nistelrooy Man Utd (assistant)
Top of the list is Ruud van Nistelrooy, who only returned to Old Trafford over the summer to become Ten Hag’s assistant manager. He has previous experience as a manager with PSV Eindhoven.
Van Nistelrooy will be interim boss “whilst a permanent head coach is recruited”, though given his experience and history at the club, there’s every chance a good spell in the hot seat could see the Dutchman land the role permanently.
2 Ruben Amorim Sporting CP
Ruben Amorim was heavily linked with replacing Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool prior to Arne Slot’s arrival, but the Portuguese boss stayed with Sporting CP, where he has been since 2020.
Man Utd’s famous relationship with Sporting CP has seen Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes swap Portugal for England, so perhaps the Red Devils could look at Amorim to replace Ten Hag.
Sporting are flying high in the Portuguese top flight and the Champions League, so it would be a big deal to prise him away from Lisbon, but Manchester United will be keen to show they remain one of the biggest clubs in the world.
3 Thomas Frank Brentford
Brentford boss Thomas Frank always seems to be in the running for a number of high-profile jobs given the brilliant job he has done with the Bees.
He was mooted with the position in the summer and could be there or thereabouts again now United have made the call to sack Ten Hag.
Man Utd supporters will know all about his high-pressing football after Brentford embarrassed Ten Hag’s side in August 2022, leading 4-0 at half-time.
He recently commented on the prospect of leaving Brentford for a ‘bigger’ club, but reiterated his love for his current team, saying that moving on would not necessarily be a positive:
“For sure if I ever got the offer to go to a big club and I decided to go there, it would probably not make my life better. I think we all know that. Maybe it is a challenge you need to try. I don’t know. It is not something I am thinking about,” he told The Sports Agents podcast (via JOE).
4 Gareth Southgate Free agent (last job: England)
Gareth Southgate has been linked with the Man Utd vacancy for months, and with his time as England manager now up after leaving the Three Lions following the European Championship, his next job could be at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils previously poached Louis van Gaal from the Netherlands after a successful World Cup campaign, and with Southgate taking England to the Euro 2024 final, a return to club football with the Red Devils could be an option.
However, Southgate has recently indicated that he will spend some time away from the game, though it seems he is still being heavily backed to return to club football.
5 Graham Potter Free agent (last job: Chelsea)
Former Chelsea boss Graham Potter.
Graham Potter has been out of a job for over a year and is seemingly waiting on the perfect opportunity to return to the dugout, having rejected advances from the likes of Leicester City and Ajax since his departure from Chelsea.
He may well see Old Trafford as a brilliant chance to prove he can succeed at a huge club, so Potter could be one to watch now that United have a fresh vacancy.
Like Van Nistelrooy, Michael Carrick knows all about playing at Manchester United and even being an assistant at Old Trafford after spending time alongside Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Carrick was even named as Man Utd’s caretaker manager for three games in 2021, but since 2022, he has been making a name for himself as Middlesbrough boss. The 43-year-old has his eyes on promotion to the Premier League at the Riverside and may well have admirers in Manchester for the work he has been doing in the second tier.
7 Xavi Free agent (last job: Barcelona)
Xavi has a La Liga winners’ medal from his short tenure at Barcelona, where he spent many glittering years as a player. There isn’t much to go on in terms of convincing others that he is truly an elite manager – indeed, it was his Barcelona side that was beaten by United in the Europa League under Ten Hag just over 18 months ago.
United have hired many big names since the deaprture of Sir Alex Ferguson, and Xavi would no doubt be a continuation of that theme. But whether he is what the club needs right now is another matter.
He may have succeeded with the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Lamine Yamal at his disposal, but could he get a tune out of this United team? The jury may be out on that one.
8 Kieran McKenna Ipswich Town
Former Man Utd U18 manager Kieran McKenna was linked with a number of top clubs over the summer, including a return to the Red Devils, but he decided to stay put at Ipswich Town after taking them from League One to the Premier League.
He committed his future to the Tractor Boys by signing a new four-year deal at the end of May, but it wouldn’t come as a shock if his name is mentioned again when it comes to the Old Trafford hot seat.
Edin Terzic recently left Borussia Dortmund after taking the Bundesliga side to the Champions League final, ending his six-year association with the club after also working as an assistant, caretaker and technical director.
The German also has experience in the Premier League as an assistant to Slaven Bilic at West Ham, and his attacking style of football could appeal to Ratcliffe and INEOS. His chances of actually getting the job may depend on the hierarchy’s preference for a long or short-term appointment.
Man Utd move for "high-intensity" 41 y/o manager to replace Erik ten Hag
The Red Devils are “very impressed” by him.
1 ByHenry Jackson Oct 19, 2024 10 Simone Inzaghi Inter
There’s no doubting that Simone Inzaghi has impressed while in charge of Inter, guiding the Nerazzurri to two Coppas Italia and last season’s Scudetto.
He also went to toe-to-toe with Manchester City in the 2023 Champions League final, and earned a credible draw at the Etihad Stadium earlier this season.
Given his success at Inter to this point, it seems fanciful that he would give that up to join Manchester United, though we all know how much of a pull the Premier League can be to the best in the business.

Geoff Allardice has been named the full-time CEO of the ICC after serving in the role on an interim basis for more than eight months. Allardice had taken over the role from Manu Sawhney in March, when the latter was suspended based on the findings of a cultural review.Allardice, a former first-class cricketer from Australia who has a degree in chemical engineering, earlier served as ICC general manager (cricket) for eight years. He did not play international cricket but was a prolific, dogged batter for Melbourne University in club cricket and played 18 matches for Victoria in the early 1990s. Former CA CEO James Sutherland was Allardice’s long-time Melbourne University team-mate. Eventually, Sutherland brought Allardice into the CA set-up as umpires’ manager in the early 2000s. From there, he went up the ladder to become CA’s cricket operations general manager, before moving on to the ICC in July 2012.”My continued focus will be on doing the right thing for our sport and working closely with Members to deliver long-term success and sustainability,” Allardice said. “I would also like to thank the ICC staff for their commitment and support over the last eight months and I’m looking forward to continuing to serve cricket with such a talented team.”Sawhney was first asked to go on leave by the ICC in March following issues that emerged over his management style after a cultural review, which was conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). He was then officially let go from his role in July, following a decision taken by the ICC board.ICC chairman Greg Barclay said: “I am delighted that Geoff has agreed to take the role of ICC CEO on a permanent basis. He has shown tremendous leadership during an extremely challenging period culminating in the successful delivery of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021.”Geoff has unrivaled knowledge of the global cricket landscape and its stakeholders and has consistently demonstrated he is the right person to work in partnership with our Members to shape the sport for the next decade as we embark on delivering a new strategy and our next commercial rights cycle.”

Arsenal chiefs have set their sights on an “exciting” potential signing for manager Mikel Arteta, with reports coming after sporting director Edu Gaspar announced his departure from N5.
Edu releases statement as Arsenal departure confirmed
The high-ranking transfer chief was responsible for some of their most pivotal signings of the last five years – perhaps most notably current club captain Martin Odegaard for just £30 million and their club-record deal for Declan Rice – with Edu also playing a major role in the appointment of Arteta.
Comfort for Arsenal as update emerges on transfer planning after Edu exit
The Brazilian will be a sore miss, but the club have back up.
ByEmilio Galantini Nov 5, 2024
Both the Brazilian and Arsenal’s manager worked in tandem as they developed the side from a mid-table team to genuine Premier League title challengers, ending their long hiatus from the Champions League and delivering some major silverware in the process.
However, following a shock exclusive report from journalist Sami Mokbel of The Daily Mail, who originally broke the news, it was revealed that Edu would be leaving his post as Arsenal sporting director – a role which he has held since 2022 after being promoted from technical director.

Later that same day, it was confirmed by the club and Edu himself, with Arteta since breaking his silence on the departure of a key club ally.
“Everything happened very quickly,” said Arteta on Edu’s departure.
“Obviously I loved working with him, I really enjoyed being alongside him on this incredible journey. From day one we’ve been together. First of all I’m very grateful personally for everything he’s done for me, and for the amazing work he’s done for the football club. I think we both had this special chemistry, working together, we really both enjoyed our roles and working together. I’m very blessed he’s been part of my life in such a beautiful place that I am right now, managing this amazing club and he’s been a massive part of that. He’s got an amazing opportunity now to do something else, in a different role and he believes it’s the right professional move for him. We have to respect that, and from the bottom of my heart, everybody really feels that we want the best for him.”
Obviously, concerns have since emerged over the club’s transfer planning. Reliable journalist Simon Collings shared a comforting update in this regard, saying Arsenal’s remaining executives can handle major dealings after Edu’s departure.
It was also stated that Arsenal’s transfer groundwork is often done a year in advance, so it appears they could already be prepared for January and next summer.
Arsenal set sights on "exciting" midfielder Hugo Larsson
According to Sky Germany and journalist Kerry Hau, as transcribed by Sport Witness, Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Larsson is a man on their agenda in the wake of Edu’s exit.
Arsenal have Larsson “in their sights” to sign, alongside the likes of Liverpool and Tottenham, with the 20-year-old starting this season impressively. The six-cap Swede boasts three goals and an assist from his opening 14 matches, with Hau also calling Larsson an “exciting” player to watch out for.
“Hugo Larsson is one of Eintracht Frankfurt’s shooting stars and is currently one of the most exciting midfielders in the Bundesliga,” he said.
“The 20-year-old Swede has already aroused the interest of several top clubs. According to our information, the Premier League is currently looking at him.
“Some top-class teams, right behind Liverpool FC, Arsenal FC and also Tottenham Hotspur, we hear, have Larsson in their sights, but also one or two Bundesliga competitors.
“Nevertheless, the Frankfurt bosses around Markus Dröschel can sit back and relax, because Larsson feels at home on the Main and that is why he recently extended his contract early until 2029 and, very importantly, from Frankfurt’s point of view, without an exit clause.”
Chairman Andrew Gaggin describes CA’s treatment of Paine as “appalling” and “the worst since Bill Lawry”
Alex Malcolm23-Nov-2021Cricket Tasmania chairman Andrew Gaggin has lashed out at Cricket Australia, describing their treatment of Tim Paine as “appalling” and “the worst” of any Australia captain in 50 years.Gaggin released the statement on behalf of the Cricket Tasmania board on Tuesday, launching a withering attack on Cricket Australia’s handling of Paine in the aftermath of a texting scandal becoming public on Friday.CA chairman Richard Freudenstein and CEO Nick Hockley admitted on Saturday they would have axed Paine as captain had they been in charge in 2018, despite Paine being investigated and cleared by CA’s integrity unit of wrongdoing regarding explicit and inappropriate text messages with a co-worker at Cricket Tasmania.Paine’s successor, expected to be Pat Cummins, could be confirmed this week. Cricket Australia announced a five-member panel who would oversee the process and send a name to the board for final approval. Freudenstein and Hockley will be joined by CA director Mel Jones plus selectors George Bailey and Tony Dodemaide.Gaggin launched at CA, saying the Cricket Tasmania board unanimously expressed condemnation at how Paine had been treated since the texting scandal became public.Related

“In conversations I have had in recent days, it is clear the anger amongst the Tasmanian cricket community and general public is palpable,” he said in the statement.”Tim Paine has been a beacon for Australian cricket over the past four years and instrumental in salvaging the reputation of the national team after the calamity of Cape Town. Yet, at a time when CA should have supported Tim, he was evidently regarded as dispensable. The treatment afforded to the Australian Test captain by CA has been appalling, and the worst since Bill Lawry 50 years ago.””The Cricket Tasmania Board reaffirmed its view that Paine should not have been put in a position where he felt the need to resign over an incident that was determined by an independent inquiry at the time to not be a breach of the Code of Conduct and was a consensual and private exchange that occurred between two mature adults and was not repeated.”Cricket Tasmania angry over Cricket Australia’s treatment of Tim Paine•Getty Images
The statement concluded by saying that Cricket Tasmania would continue to support Paine and was pleased to see him take six catches on his return from injury for Tasmania’s 2nd XI against South Australia. He missed out with the bat on day two of the four-day game, lasting just two balls as he was adjudged lbw to South Australia’s left-arm spinner Sam Kerber for 1.Gaggin’s statement echoed the words of former CA chairman David Peever who was equally critical of CA’s handling of Paine, saying he deserved loyalty at this time and not abandonment.Speaking earlier in the day Nick Cummins, the current Cricket Victoria chief executive who was in the same position with Tasmania at the time of the complaint against Paine, supported initial outcome.”The process that Cricket Australia used at the time was bulletproof. We were really satisfied that it was done the right way,” he told SEN radio.
