Tom Banton: 'Learning from Andre Russell will be cool'

Young England batsman talks about his unique drag-flick six-hitting technique

When Tom Banton first played the outrageous reverse-flick off his toes last year, many wondered how his wrists were so supple for him to pull that shot off. You look at the video below on repeat, and slowly realise it is reminiscent of Eoin Morgan, only right-handed, and there’s a reason for that. While Morgan spent his teenage years playing the Irish sport of hurling, Banton grew up playing field hockey, where flexible yet powerful wrists are vital for success. And his ability to play those 360-degree shots are part of some of the skills he transferred when he began taking cricket seriously.ALSO READ: McCullum: Gill will be ‘part of leadership group’ at KKR”I guess it probably comes from playing hockey,” Banton told . I was a drag-flicker and used to play reverse there quite often. My dad used to play hockey and I kind of followed his footsteps. I played hockey from three till about 17. I was 16 years old, when things were getting more serious and I had to pick one sport and that’s when I chose cricket.” Morgan’s shadow continues to follow Banton in the IPL as they’ll be team-mates at Knight Riders, and the youngster only has praises for the man under whose captaincy he made his England debut. Although Morgan will not be his captain at Knight Riders, Banton knows Morgan will be the perfect team man for the two-time champions. Morgan returns for a second stint at Knight Riders, having been bought at the 2011 auction too.”He is an extremely positive person, no matter what,” Banton said of England’s ODI World Cup-winning captain. “It’s nice to have him in the team, as he bats for his team. I remember my first match for England, I got out playing a shot. He came up to me and said ‘you don’t need to change what you are currently doing.’ It was really nice to hear that.”ALSO READ: Banton among 20 players to watch out for in 2020sMorgan, though, is far from being only familiar face he will see at Knight Riders. While playing for Brisbane Heat at the 2019-20 BBL, he caught up with Knight Riders’ head coach Brendon McCullum on the day after the IPL auction where he was bought for INR 1 crore. Having one of his childhood idols is ‘cool’, according to Banton, as is the prospect of playing with three Indians he played a lot against at the Under-19 level.”I actually went out on dinner with him during the BBL, and also with Chris Lynn, our former KKR player, just the day after the auction,” Banton said. “Growing up, McCullum was someone I looked up to.”I am particularly excited to play alongside Andre Russell and Pat Cummins. I watched Andre last year, and he played really well. Learning from someone like him will be really cool. There are a few guys of my age – Shivam Mavi, Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Shubman Gill – whom I have played against when I was younger.”Looking back, I remember the Indians were a lot better than all of us in the [2018 Under-19] World Cup. I look up to those guys even now, and I am still good friends with some of them. Playing alongside Shubman at KKR will be pretty nice and I am really looking forward to it.”Banton has usually been a wicketkeeper-batsman at the county level but now he sees himself switching into a batmsan-wicketkeeper in the long term instead. It’s a decision that makes sense as Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow perform that role for the national side and his Knight Riders captain Dinesh Karthik takes up the keeping duties in the IPL.”I would like to be reckoned as a batsman who has the wicketkeeping abilities as a second option,” Banton said. “I think this year, I wanted to focus a lot more on my batting. At the same time, I want to continue working on my keeping skills. It’s been tricky this year. This winter has been hectic and I didn’t really have the time to stop and think about what I really wanted to do.”Banton is a self-confessed IPL fanatic, having watched the tournament right from its early years, and it’s now time to live what he’s been “dreaming of since a very young age.” His game is built for the IPL, and with Knight Riders dropping Lynn from their squad, there might just be a spot in the top order for him.

IPL 2020 SOPs: Rigorous testing, restricted movement, one team per hotel

IPL has permitted families to travel and stay inside the bio-secure bubble, but franchises to take final decision

The IPL has laid out a rigorous testing process for players and support staff who will need to clear at least four tests along with a week-long quarantine before they can start training in the UAE. Details of the testing process and frequency feature among the draft document of standard operating procedures (SOPs), which the IPL shared with franchises on Monday. The SOPs include details on dos and don’ts during travel, lodging and training during the 53-day tournament, which is scheduled to be played at three venues in the UAE – Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah – between September 19 and November 10. The BCCI is yet to announce the tournament schedule as it awaits a formal nod from the Indian government.ESPNcricinfo understands that teams have been asked to travel with “minimum” contingents and not before August 20. Among the SOPs, the IPL has permitted families of squad members to travel to the UAE and stay inside the bio-secure bubble, but the final decision on that front will remain with each franchise. However, the IPL has made it mandatory that each team will need to have a medical doctor on board to help the franchise mitigate risks as well educate the squad during the Covid-19 pandemic.Testing protocolsAs per the draft SOPs, IPL has recommended to franchises that all members carry out two tests before their squads depart for the UAE. Those two tests will need to be done at 24-hour intervals as per the World Health Organisation norms. They will also need to be done before the player or coaching/support staff member assembles in the city where they will board the flight for the UAE. The validity of the second test result will need to last for at least four days (96 hours) including the date of landing in the UAE.The player or staff in question can only fly out if both those tests come out negative. Anyone infected will need to undergo the mandatory two-week quarantine period as per the guidelines of the Indian government. After that, the person will need to undergo a fresh set of two tests and clear them before joining the squad in the UAE.Once the squad lands in the UAE, all members are to undergo another test at the airport before heading to the team hotel. From this point, the IPL testing protocol will kick in.As per the protocol, every squad will undergo a mandatory seven-day quarantine in the team hotel. During this week every squad member will be tested thrice – on days 1, 3 and 6. Once all those results come back negative, the squad can start training. After that, all squad members will be tested on the fifth day of every week throughout the tournament. As far as the non-Indian players and staff are concerned, they will need to carry the negative result of the test carried out in the last 96 hours before arriving in the UAE.As per the local rules, during the tournament squads travelling to Abu Dhabi will need to carry negative test results carried out in the previous 48 hours. As per the IPL guidelines, if the weekly test result has expired during the course of travel to Abu Dhabi, squads will need to undergo a fresh test again.Testing positive during the tournamentIn such a scenario, it is understood that the person in question would need to isolate but outside the bubble, considering that aerosols – respiratory droplets – can easily be transmitted. That infected person would be put in a sanitised room within the same hotel. One of the guidelines recommends having a few rooms where the squad is staying to isolate any infected person(s).No stepping out of the bubbleIt is understood the IPL has made it clear no person can go in and out of the bio-secure bubble during the course of the tournament. Strict social distancing norms have been recommended, including squad members discouraged from having any close contact even within the bubble which includes moving between hotel rooms. Squad members have also been asked to wear masks outside their rooms at hotels and avoid any unnecessary movement. There will be exceptions. If an injured player needs to visit a hospital for X-rays or scans, then the guidelines suggest the movement be restricted to the clinic with minimal interaction with outsiders. One team per hotelAs per the guidelines all eight teams will stay in separate hotels. The franchises have been asked to book a hotel or resort exclusively for the squads with no outsiders allowed. If that is not possible, then IPL has recommended they stay somewhere with a separate wing, entrance and exit.

Newcastle targeting "monster" signing who’d take Isak to the next level

Newcastle United produced some impressive numbers in front of goal during the 2023/24 campaign, scoring 85 times in the Premier League – a tally only bettered by Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool.

Alexander Isak has been the main talisman for Eddie Howe’s side, scoring 21 goals for the Magpies, with Anthony Gordon the closest player to that tally, but ten behind with his 11 strikes in the league.

The duo have both enjoyed their most successful season in a Newcastle shirt, but unfortunately were unable to catapult the side into a European spot for the second successive term, missing out after Manchester United’s FA Cup triumph.

Howe’s side have scored three or more goals in 14 of their 38 matches in the Premier League last season, demonstrating their ability to find the back of the net on a frequent basis.

Despite their impressive record in attacking areas, the Magpies are looking to strengthen further, with Howe and the board targeting one player to improve their potent threat.

Newcastle interested in £50m star

According to journalist Ignazio Genuardi, Newcastle are targeting Nottingham Forest attacking midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White ahead of the summer transfer window.

Morgan Gibbs-White celebrates for Nottingham Forest

The 24-year-old, who Genuardi claims is a "priority signing" for the Magpies, has enjoyed an excellent season for the Reds under Nuno Espírito Santo, achieving double figures in assists – securing the club’s Premier League survival for another season.

Gibbs-White’s excellent campaign hasn’t gone unnoticed, with Tottenham Hotspur also in the race for his signature, but any deal for the talent would see them potentially fork out at least £50m for his services, with Forest desperate to keep hold of their star player.

However, Howe’s side should go all out to secure a move for Gibbs-White, with the former England U21 captain allowing one player to thrive at St James’ Park.

Why Gibbs-White would take Isak to the next level

Every Newcastle fan would know how key the Swedish striker has been to their success in recent years, but imagine him reaching the next level.

He can easily do so with the addition of Gibbs-White, with his creativity in the final third allowing Isak to add to his already impressive goalscoring tally. Last term he found the net on 21 occasions in 30 league matches; not bad indeed.

Morgan Gibbs-White

The “monster” Forest talent, as dubbed by one analyst, finished the campaign with five goals and ten assists – a superb return for a player leading a club away from any form of relegation threat.

He’s also registered 74 chances created – a tally that is more than double any of his teammates could manage in 2023/24, with Callum Hudson-Odoi taking second spot with just 36.

His xG of 6.8 expected assists, which like his chances created, is the highest in the squad, demonstrates that he’s exceeded the tally he should be achieving based on the goals he’s laid off for his teammates.

His ability to create carnage in the final third is out of this world, providing a dynamic in the Newcastle midfield that has often been missing in recent times.

Although he would cost the Magpies a pretty penny this summer, his addition would certainly improve the club’s chances of a return to Champions League football, with Gibbs-White having the potential to provide Isak with endless opportunities in front of goal – allowing him to potential break through the 25-goal mark next season.

Davies could sign "terrific" replacement for Stansfield at Birmingham

Chris Davies, now fresh in the Birmingham City hot seat, will want to crack on and start adding signings to his new Blues roster, ahead of entering into the cut and thrust of League One.

The new Blues manager, who has left the comforts of Tottenham Hotspur behind for the challenge of getting the sleeping giant immediately promoted, will hope he's adequately backed in the transfer market, as the American owners at St. Andrew's also pray for a short but sweet stay in the third-tier.

Losing Jay Stansfield, who has returned back to the luxuries of Premier League Fulham after a fruitful loan stay, is an obvious blow, having been a constant ray of positivity during dark recent times in the West Midlands.

But, they could immediately replace him with this potential buy in the works.

Birmingham linked with Stansfield replacement

According to a recent report in The Sun, Birmingham – alongside a whole host of other EFL clubs – are queueing up to try and win the services of forgotten Burnley man Scott Twine, who will be sold by the Clarets this transfer window.

Adept at playing down the wings, as an attacking midfielder, or up top, Twine would be an ideal replacement for the out-going Stansfield, who can equally play in all of these roles competently.

Likewise, Twine would also be able to replace Stansfield in terms of goal numbers, with the promising Fulham youngster bagging 13 goals last season for the Blues, even with the on-field situation being bleak for the majority of the campaign.

The Clarets target has also proven himself to be a goalscoring machine in the EFL from memorable stints at clubs away from Turf Moor, but it won't be a foregone conclusion that the 24-year-old relocates to Birmingham, with interest from the Championship in Bristol City and Sunderland no doubt more tempting.

Yet, with the upward trajectory of his career grinding to somewhat of a halt in Lancashire, moving down to League One could be the confidence-boosting switch he needs, to find his shooting boots once more.

How Twine could be Birmingham's next Stansfield

The 24-year-old never quite settled at Turf Moor after a whirlwind rise all the way up from League Two to the Championship, with the agile attacker suffering from unfortunate luck with injuries, alongside a whole plethora of other exciting forwards at Vincent Kompany's disposal being available over him.

Twine's record in League One will, however, make Davies' eyes light up in the Blues dug-out regardless of his up-and-down stint at Burnley, with the slick forward bagging 20 goals last time he was in the division for Milton Keynes Dons, which actually betters Stansfield's one-season goal return when he was plying his trade with Exeter City on loan in the same league.

Ending his last season in the third tier with a ridiculous 33 goal contributions, it's no shock to see that Twine's ex-MK Dons manager Liam Manning wants to add him to his Bristol City group now, having once described the 24-year-old as a "terrific" talent when the pair were together at Stadium MK.

Twine's numbers at Championship level, before his Clarets career began to fizzle out, aren't far off Stansfield's this season just gone either, tallying up nine goals and four assists in the division across 49 total games, which included a sublime free-kick being fired in on the way to Kompany's men winning the title.

This would arguably be a statement signing from Birmingham, and one that would instantly lift the spirits at St. Andrew's, ahead of what they hope is a promotion-winning campaign.

CSA will apply affirmative action while hiring consultants

While the directive is not set in stone, it will be used to test whether people of colour are provided with opportunities

Cricket South Africa will apply an affirmative action policy when hiring consultants in future, which could affect the likes of Jacques Kallis and Paul Harris. While the directive is not set in stone, it will be used a means to test whether people of colour are provided with opportunities they may otherwise have been denied.”Obviously there is a lot of talent sitting in the white pool, just by our history and if there is a particular skill that only a white consultant can offer CSA, then obviously we will use them,” Kugandrie Govender, CSA’s acting CEO told ESPNcricinfo. “This an internal measure for us to check ourselves because there was no measure before and people did whatever they wanted to do. We need to ask: ‘Could you have employed a black person in this position?’ We are not saying we don’t want any white people. We are saying if you want that you have got to go through a process and you have specifically prove that no-one else can do the job.”Asked specifically what this may mean for the future involvement of Kallis, who worked as a batting consultant during the previous summer, Govender said: “I’ll swap it around: do you think anyone else could do what Kallis was doing? If Graeme (Smith) says Jacques can do this, nobody else can, then the cricket people need to decide.”Govender said South Africa’s director of cricket Graeme Smith, who is in charge of support staff appointments for the national men’s and women’s team, the under-19 side and the academy, has been informed of the policy. “I have spoken to Graeme, he was in all of the meetings. It’s not something he doesn’t know about. One of our organisational objectives is to transform. We inherited that people before us did that transform,” she said. “While Graeme does have a contract that says he has decision-making power, he has to work within the policies and processes of CSA, like we all do.”Smith has come under fire for appointments he made when he took over in December last year and named Mark Boucher men’s head coach, and roped in Kallis in as a batting consultant. In his defence, he previously pointed to the other support staff he also hired, and emphasised Kallis’ worth.”I made a number of appointments, not only Mark Boucher – such as the permanent appointment of Volvo (Masubelele), the team manager, Justin Ontong (fielding coach), Charl Langeveldt (bowling coach), Enoch Nkwe (assistant coach) and the medical staff,” Smith said last month. “If you’re asking me whether I think Jacques Kallis is one of the best cricketers we’ve ever had, I will tell you yes. It would be stupid of us not to involve our most successful cricketer and the batting experiences he could bring to our young batters. But I understand (people’s concerns). I think a balanced approach is key.”Apart from Kallis and Harris, who was requested by Keshav Maharaj to work with him during the summer, this could also impact on those not involved with on-field activities such as the security company, headed by Rory Steyn or the professional coaching courses led by Anton Ferreira. If or how they will be affected is yet to be determined, but Govender underlined that CSA must show a greater commitment to transformation because they recognise that their pace of change has been too slow. She pointed to the outpouring of stories of discrimination from former players of colour which has dominated the cricket conversation in this country over the last few weeks as evidence that CSA has to act decisively and immediately “Our problems are not financial. Our reserves remain the same. We would have liked to add to it but we closed the year on a profit. Our problems stem from the fact that we have not transformed enough and not fast enough,” Govender said. “It’s a regulatory measure that we are saying we are holding ourselves accountable because in the past we haven’t. It is radical in some sense but if it had happened organically over the years, it wouldn’t need to be.Is it an ideal? Absolutely not.”CSA have also come under fire from South Africa’s sports ministry recently for appointing several white men to senior positions and will consult with the minister Nathi Mthethwa as they prepare to reschedule their AGM. Govender made it clear that the new policy has not been imposed on CSA by Mthethwa or his office. “It was not a directive from government. They wanted to know what our turnaround plan is and this is one of the things,” she said.CSA have yet to decide a new date for their AGM which has been moved from Saturday as the organisation aims to address a range of issues, from governance to transformation.

Tasmania strike after Tim Paine's hundred builds huge lead

Jake Doran scored his second Shield hundred on a day of remorseless accumulation by Tasmania

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Oct-2020

Tim Paine’s century swelled Tasmania’s lead•Getty Images

Tim Paine’s third first-class century pushed Tasmania into a position from where they will hunt a final-day victory against South Australia who are in danger of beginning the Sheffield Shield season with a brace of heavy losses. They negotiated the final session with what was probably the maximum damage if they were to have genuine hope of escaping with a draw. Jake Weatherald was well caught, low at third slip, and Brad Davis paid the price of shouldering arms against Peter Siddle before Henry Hunt and Travis Head, who had earlier dislocated a finger in the field, saw out the day.South Australia were already comfortably ahead at the start of the third day and left hander Jake Doran was the first to register three figures with his second Shield hundred.Paine had waited 13 years to double his century tally when he made a hundred against Western Australia at the WACA last season. He was discomforted for a while here, following a blow on the arm from Wes Agar and was treated to some sustained short-pitched bowling, but his third hundred came from 191 deliveries with a pull off Kane Richardson on a day of remorseless accumulation by South Australia. It set him up nicely for a season that, everyone hopes, will include four Tests against India.By the time Doran was taken at slip, Lloyd Pope finding a touch of extra bounce from round the wicket to take the top edge, the sixth-wicket stand was worth 153 and it had long-since become a match-saving mission for South Australia. For the rest of the afternoon Paine was accompanied by Beau Webster and Tom Andrews to further deflate the Redbacks’ attack. Webster looked aghast to be given caught down the leg side and Pope was able to collect a second wicket, but they came at the considerable cost of 203 – the first bowler to concede a double ton in the Shield since 2015.
