The only bright spot for Afghanistan was debutant Amir Hamza, who ended with figures of 5 for 74
The Report by Hemant Brar28-Nov-2019
Shamarh Brooks celebrates his maiden Test century•AFP
Shamarh Brooks’ maiden Test century and Rahkeem Cornwall’s match haul of ten wickets took West Indies to the doorstep of victory by the end of day two of the one-off Test in Lucknow. After starting the day on 68 for 2, West Indies were bowled out for 277, with Brooks’ 111 giving them a lead of 90. The only bright spot for Afghanistan was debutant Amir Hamza, who ended with figures of 5 for 74. Then, just like in their first innings, the hosts squandered another good start and were stuttering at 109 for 7 at stumps, just 19 runs in front.Javed Ahmadi and Ibrahim Zadran gave Afghanistan a 53-run start. While both batsmen looked resolute in their approach, Ahmadi was helped by a slice of luck as well when he was caught at leg slip but replays showed Cornwall had overstepped. However, an error in judgement from Zadran brought an end to the stand as the batsman offered no shot to a Cornwall offbreak and was given lbw. That was followed by a horrendous mix-up between Ahmadi and Ihsanullah, resulting in the latter being run out.Cornwall then dealt two big blows, dismissing Rahmat Shah and Asghar Afghan in identical manner. Both of them got inside edges on to their pads, and Brooks pouched the chances at short leg. Having picked up 7 for 75 in the first innings, the offspinner finished the day with a match haul of 10 for 116.Ahmadi brought up his fifty in the company of Nasir Jamal, and took Afghanistan to 96 for 5, but three quick strikes from Roston Chase under the floodlights dented them further. Jamal played down the wrong line and was bowled, while Hamza, the nightwatchman, and Ahmadi were taken at first slip.Earlier, Brooks showcased excellent mix of attack and defence against the Afghanistan spinners, who tried too hard for wickets at most times. Rashid Khan had a couple of strong lbw appeals turned down and that added to their frustration. However, in the absence of DRS for the game, there was no choice but to accept the on-field decisions.Rahkeem Cornwall celebrates a wicket with captain Jason Holder•Getty Images
While Afghanistan did make inroads and one wicket invariably brought another, Brooks stayed firm. After counter-attacking for the first half of his innings, he assumed a more measured approach after lunch but didn’t miss out on the loose deliveries. Rashid, in particular, was at the receiving end as Brooks took 69 off 108 balls from the legspinner. In all, Brooks struck 15 fours and a six before being bowled by Hamza while looking for quick runs with his side eight wickets down.John Campbell, the other overnight batsman, took to attack straightaway. The strategy paid off as he deployed a variety of sweeps – slog, lap, reverse – to counter the left-arm spin of Hamza and took 15 from the bowler’s second over of the day. He brought up his maiden Test fifty with a single to deep square-leg, courtesy a conventional sweep.Brooks was more orthodox at the other end but no less attacking. In one Rashid over, he struck two fours and a six as West Indies went past 100. Campbell and he added 82 in just 19.1 overs before Hamza broke the stand with Campbell’s wicket for 55, scored in 75 balls. But it was as much Ihsanullah’s wicket too, as the slip fielder moved swiftly to his right upon seeing Campbell shaping up for a lap sweep, put in the dive and completed the catch one-handed.Shimron Hetmyer and Chase didn’t last long and at 150 for 5, it looked like Afghanistan had clawed their way back. But Shane Dowrich thwarted their hopes. Like the batsmen before him, Dowrich too started aggressively, hitting three fours in no time to move to 15 in as many balls. It wasn’t that the Afghanistan spinners didn’t create any chances. Apart from the lbw shouts, Rashid got Brooks to edge one behind but Afsar Zazai dropped the catch. The batsman was on 59 at that time.Brooks and Dowrich added 74 for the sixth wicket and took the side into the lead. But once Zahir Khan got Dowrich lbw, the rest of the batting didn’t last long. Hamza picked up three of the remaining four wickets, while Cornwall was wrongly given out lbw off Rashid, with the ball brushing the inside edge on its way to the pads.

After speaking with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy, talkSPORT pundit and ex-Crystal Palace chief Simon Jordan has shared what else he's planning for the club.
Levy announces intention to secure Spurs investors
As Levy takes more of a back seat running football operations, with technical director Johan Lange and chief football officer Scott Munn taking over in that regard, it is believed that the Spurs board member maintains a key role in the financial side.
Tottenham teenager awaiting debut now tipped to be "one of the world's best"
He’s got a growing reputation.
ByEmilio Galantini Apr 10, 2024
For years, Levy has been chasing a Tottenham Hotspur stadium naming rights deal as one of his major tasks, but he is still no closer to achieving that feat despite rumoured discussions with blue-chip companies like Amazon.
Previous reports have claimed that Spurs have been holding out for a £25 million-per-year agreement since the end of 2019, though the length of time it's taken to secure a deal may hint the club will have to ease up on their demands.
There are other avenues of income for the north Londoners, which Levy looks to take full advantage of as he seeks to grow Tottenham even more off the field.

“To capitalise on our long-term potential, to continue to invest in the teams and undertake future capital projects, the club requires a significant increase in its equity base," said Levy in an official statement after Tottenham posted £86.8 million losses for the 12 months leading to June 30, 2023.
“The board and its advisors, Rothschild & Co, are in discussions with prospective investors. Any recommended investment proposal would require the support of the club’s shareholders.”
Speaking to talkSPORT, Jordan has shared what could be another fruitful financial avenue.
Simon Jordan shares off-field Levy plan at Tottenham
As per the pundit (via HITC), Levy wants to build hotels and "other things" to "gentrify Tottenham beyond all recognition".
“I think he (Postecoglou) is actually saying his ambitions are to win things and not to participate in things,” said Jordan.
“He said that at the beginning of the season. He said ‘there is no glass ceiling. I want to get as high as I can and win things’
“The finances and the opportunity to be better are inextricably indexed. You get into the Champions League, and you get over £100 million if you win it. You have got broadcast opportunities and you have a whole raft of opportunities. You buy better players and you keep on going around that circle until you eventually land on that table until you win something, so I don’t think he (Postecoglou) makes as much sense as he likes to think he does.
Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy.
“It’s similar logic for Liverpool, but the problem is about how you spend the money. Liverpool didn’t spend big money, they spent Coutinho money and they spent it wisely. Whereas Spurs spent Bale’s money under AVB poorly.
"So, this argument that Daniel Levy hasn’t done the things he should have done will always be there. I said to him the other day, ‘you have a bank balance full of it and a trophy cabinet that’s empty’. He will always have that until they win something.
“Postecoglou and Levy, he is trying to raise some more money. It tells me he wants to build other things. He has seen a revenue model and he wants to build hotels and he tells me he wants to build other things. He wants to gentrify Tottenham beyond all recognition.”

Requiring 80 off 11 overs after two rain stoppages in the Hobart Hurricanes innings, Stoinis and Handscomb rescued the Stars from a precarious 2 for 3 with a 52-run partnership
The Report by Tristan Lavalette30-Dec-2019A half-century partnership between Peter Handscomb and a brave Marcus Stoinis was enough for Melbourne Stars to edge Hobart Hurricanes in a rain-affected match in Launceston.Requiring 80 off 11 overs after two rain stoppages in the Hobart Hurricanes innings, Stoinis and Handscomb rescued the Stars from a precarious 2 for 3 with a 52-run partnership before the match was called off after 7.3 overs. Stars were four ahead of the par score.Dale Steyn celebrates the wicket of his compatriot David Miller•Getty Images
Stoinis fell just before the match was abandoned but showed plenty of grit after copping a brutal blow to the helmet from a sharp Riley Meredith delivery early in his innings. After being sent in, the Hurricanes’ top-order struggled against Dale Steyn and Nathan Coulter-Nile in favourable bowling conditions before rain halted play thrice to reduce their innings to 11 overs.Stars’ quicks menace before rain strikes D’Arcy Short hasn’t quite hit his straps this season – by his lofty standards – but received good news before play after being a late inclusion in Australia’s upcoming ODI tour to India. Short’s good spirits didn’t last long, however, as he fell loosely for a duck in the first over. The Stars’ fast bowlers relished overcast conditions and a green-tinged pitch making the BBL contest feel more like a vintage WACA Test match. Coulter-Nile enjoyed the menacing bounce and promptly dismissed Simon Milenko with a rearing short ball that befuddled the batsman. The pyrotechnics on-field was matched off it with lightning flashing close to the ground. Play then stopped due to rain with the Hurricanes lurching at 2 for 29 after five overs. After a 20-minute stoppage, captain Glenn Maxwell went with the dual spin options of Adam Zampa and Sandeep Lamichhane in a bid to race through overs with rain ominously looming.Boundaries were hard to come by on resumption with Caleb Jewell and Ben McDermott content to work the ball around, as the Hurricanes reached 2 for 52 after nine overs. After four straight overs of spin, Maxwell reverted to Steyn who rewarded his skipper’s faith by claiming a frustrated McDermott before rain once again halted play. After nearly an hour’s break, Steyn and Coulter-Nile claimed wickets with successive deliveries, as the pitch appeared faster on resumption.Stoinis battles as Stars do enough The shortened match appeared to favour the Stars, but local lad James Faulkner turned the contest immediately by dismissing Nic Maddinson and promoted No.3 Nick Larkin off successive deliveries.Faulkner narrowly missed out on a hat-trick in his next over, but met his match with Stoinis in sublime form until the batsman was hit in the grille by a brute of a bouncer from MeredithAfter receiving some medical attention, Stoinis bravely battled on and found a willing partner in Handscomb to ensure the Stars edged ahead.Hostilities resumed in the eight over with Stoinis initially getting hold of Meredith with a boundary before holing out to a short ball on the very next delivery. Rain fell again, however, and the match was soon called off.
Fernando Miguel evitou o gol do Tricolor.
No entanto, apenas deu amarelo.
A partida terminou zerada.

The fist pumps were being unleashed at full time at Anfield on Sunday afternoon, but it was Crystal Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson basking in the glory after a stunning Eagles performance sank Liverpool in their own backyard.
Bewilderment reigned supreme on Merseyside, with supporters simply confused after such immense performance all season, against heaps and heaps of adversity, only to unravel in a wretched week that has left Premier League and Europa League hopes dangling by a thread.
Sure, Arsenal lost at home a few hours later against Aston Villa, keeping Klopp's side level with their second-placed rivals, behind only on goal difference, but Manchester City have now sauntered into the lead in what is bleakly familiar territory.
It's certainly not over; with six Premier League fixtures left to play, this compelling three-horse race is still only two points in the balance, and Pep Guardiola's side are unable to reach the points tallies of either of their past two title-winning campaigns, even if they win their remaining games, highlighting a weakness and possibility of a slip that Liverpool must capitalise on.
Jurgen Klopp's poignant final phase as Liverpool manager has tantalised so much, with the Carabao Cup won in stunning fashion in February and the Reds firing on all four fronts until March, but now further silverware looks unlikely.
The recent regression has been stark; something needs to change instantly if Liverpool are to steer back on course. Curtis Jones' return from injury was heralded two weeks ago but after a couple of inexcusable displays, he might need to return to the bench as he continues to acclimatise.
Curtis Jones' recent performances
Jones had enjoyed a wonderful purple patch before agonisingly picking up a knee injury during Liverpool's 4-1 top-flight victory over Brentford in February, missing nine matches in all competitions before returning from the bench against Sheffield United in early April.
Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones.
As per FBref, Jones ranks among the top 13% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 19% for assists, the top 4% for pass completion, the top 11% for progressive carries, the top 14% for successful take-ons and the top 19% for tackles per 90.
Why is this relevant? It maps out the 6 foot 1 Merseysider's innate quality, technical quality of top standard, growing influence in the final third that is shaping him into a high-level, multi-faceted player.
But such statistics hardly quell the anguish in Liverpool supporters' hearts after he missed a golden opportunity to level the score against Crystal Palace at the weekend, slashing wide when placed through on goal after 75 minutes, summing up the wastefulness that's ruining Klopp's farewell.
Not just guilty of poor finishing though, Jones struggled to mesh it all together in the engine room, failing to make a key pass against the Eagles and winning just five of his 15 contested duels, as per Sofascore.
He tried to bring energy and enthusiasm to the team but it didn't work. Liverpool need something different.
Thiago Alcantara's chances of making a big impact on Liverpool's campaign are infinitesimal, but Stefan Bajcetic could be the perfect wildcard to propel the Redmen back into form.
Why Liverpool should unleash Stefan Bajcetic
Bajcetic was introduced to the Liverpool senior set-up in the early stage of the 2022/23 campaign, making his debut off the bench as Liverpool trounced Bournemouth 9-0 in the Premier League in a bitter false dawn.
Liverpool midfielder Stefan Bajcetic.
Now aged 19, the Spaniard has just returned from a long-term injury and will be chomping at the bit to try his hand among the first team once again, having been sublime in his performances last season.
Across his 11 appearances in the Premier League last year, the Celta Vigo youth product scored one goal, completed 79% of his passes and succeeded with 64% of his dribbles, as per Sofascore, but it was his nimble, silky swagger in midfield that instantly placed him as one of the division's most promising youngsters.
His effervescent emergence certainly tempered the nosedive of the Liverpool midfield, with writer Leanne Prescott saying: "Staggering that Liverpool look most in control this season when 18-year-old Stefan Bajcetic is playing."
He's been unable to build from the stones of a wonderful breakthrough campaign after languishing on the sidelines with injuries and developmental issues, but he has now returned, rangier, bulkier, more athletic.
Ready to make a marked impact on Klopp's senior squad once again.
In February 2023, Mohamed Salah waxed lyrical over Bajcetic's prodigious start to life under Klopp's wing, remarking after a standout display in Liverpool's victory over Everton: “Since he started playing for us, he has been our best player maybe so hopefully he keeps that confidence and keeps going.”

Bajcetic returned to action last week as Liverpool's U21s dispatched Manchester United U21s 3-0 at Old Trafford, making a positive impression off the bench as he builds his fitness back up, having last featured for the first team in the Carabao Cup against Leicester City in September.
With no Premier League outings to his name this term, Bajcetic could be something of a secret weapon for Liverpool as they look to rebound from a poor patch and mount a convincing run of form for the remainder of the campaign.
His infectious energy and electric presence in the centre of the park is exactly what Liverpool need, and he could even be the perfect replacement for Jones if the crisp midfielder's all-round performance does not improve soon.
It would be a bit of a risk, and Bajcetic would probably be best playing a full 90 for the U21s before being unleashed in the first team, but he's got the quality to strike once again in a flagging Liverpool side and pump the necessary fuel into the team at this pivotal final stretch.
Her 67 with the bat and 3 for 34 with the ball helped WA beat NSW, who had won 20 of the previous 23 finals
The Report by Alex Malcolm16-Feb-2020
Nicole Bolton was outstanding with bat and ball•Getty Images
A superb all-round display from Nicole Bolton took Western Australia to their first Women’s National Cricket League title with a 42-run win over New South Wales at North Sydney Oval.WA were playing just their third final, while NSW had won 20 of the 23 editions of the tournament held since it began in 1996-97. But Bolton produced a calm and composed 67 to help the visitors to a competitive total of 231 before taking 3 for 34 with the ball to help bowl NSW out for 189 and claim Player of the Match. Bolton was also named Player of the Tournament having topped the run-scoring with 436 runs at 48.44, including five half-centuries in nine matches. She took the third-most wickets in the tournament claiming 16 scalps at 19.43.Fellow offspinner Emma King and Heather Graham also took three wickets each.WA were in early trouble at 2 for 8 after winning the toss and electing to bat. Rene Farrell, in her last professional match, took the key wickets of Chloe Piparo and Graham in her first two overs. But Bolton shared three consecutive 50-plus run partnerships with Ashley Day, Mathilda Carmichael, and Megan Banting to put WA in the ascendency before Farrell returned and forced Bolton to chop on.Stella Campbell also picked up three wickets but WA’s tail was able to keep the scoreboard moving at five per over to put up a challenging total.NSW started the chase superbly with Rachel Trenaman and Maddy Darke racing to 62 without loss in the 13th over. But Graham trapped Trenaman in front for 37 and then the spinners got to work. Bolton took a sharp return chance to remove Darke for 36 and then King strangled the middle-order. She took three wickets in six overs including the prized scalp of teenage prodigy Phoebe Litchfield for just 3.NSW never got close as Bolton and Graham returned to ice the game.
