Sheffield Wednesday are arguably finding their very best form at the most crucial time it's needed, Danny Rohl's Owls victorious in four of their last five Championship clashes which included a 1-0 win at local South Yorkshire rivals Rotherham United last weekend.
This means Wednesday have a real chance at beating the dreaded drop down to League One now, an unbelievable potential feat pulled off by Rohl and Co when you consider how doomed the Owls looked to the fate of relegation earlier in the season.
Indeed, ex-boss Xisco Munoz picked up just two points from his side's opening ten games, before being unsurprisingly booted out of Hillsborough.
Now, the point gap between Wednesday and lifting their heads above the bottom three in 21st spot stands at only three points with new recruits such as Ike Ugbo and Ian Poveda becoming instant fan favourites for their heroics going forward.
Whilst Ugbo is already an adored figure with an unbelievable six goals next to his name since joining in January, Wednesday fans wouldn't say no to having a certain maverick back amongst their ranks to add even more firepower to the revitalised South Yorkshire side.
How much Sheffield Wednesday signed Fernando Forestieri for
All the way back in 2015, which now stands as being nearly a decade ago, Sheffield Wednesday broke the bank to land the services of explosive attacker Fernando Forestieri for a reported fee of £3m.
Arguably a bumper fee for a forward who had only managed to score five goals in his final season at Watford, Forestieri looked to be worth every penny and risk taken to go after him across his first full campaign at Hillsborough.
The exciting 5 foot 8 attacker would bag 15 goals from 36 appearances during his debut 2015/16 season, scoring four of those in back-to-back games in December of that same season against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Birmingham City to continue enthralling the Wednesday masses.
Sheffield Wednesday's lineup: Forestieri's Championship debut vs Burnley
1. GK – Joe Wildsmith
2. RB – Liam Palmer
3. CB – Glenn Loovens
4. CB – Tom Lees
5. LB – Daniel Pudil
6. CM – Barry Bannan
7. CM – Sam Hutchinson
8. RM – Kieran Lee
9. SS – Fernando Forestieri
10. LM – Ross Wallace
11. ST – Atdhe Nuhiu
Forestieri wouldn't just have one entertaining individual season in isolation however, going on to be a hero for Owls fans to rely on in the seasons that followed his sensational introduction to South Yorkshire.
The dangerous Wednesday man would go on to amass 40 goals and 17 assists for his side over 134 appearances in total, with 17 of those contributions coming during the 2016-17 season which saw the Owls reach the Championship playoffs.
Unfortunately, after a second successive golden season donning the blue and white of Wednesday, Forestieri's time at Hillsborough would then be hindered by injury issues and off-field drama.
He would end up only playing in a meagre ten games during the following campaign in the Championship, but would still manage to find the back of the net five times when fit away from being in and out of the Owls treatment room.
Other issues – such as the outspoken attacker wanting to move on from Wednesday at one point – would further add to the mounting frustrations surrounding his lack of availability.
This would come to a head under the reign of Garry Monk at Hillsborough, with the under-pressure manager desperate to have the ex-Hornets attacker at his disposal more often owing to his "devastating" ability to terrorise opposition defences.
But, the now 34-year-old would continue to face lengthy spells out of the side to end his celebrated time with the South Yorkshire titans on a bit of a downer – only managing to play 17 times during his final full season for his former employers.
Still, with his unpredictable presence enough to gain a goal from absolutely nothing, the iconic ex-Wednesday number 45 would be a joy to watch in the midst of the current relegation battle unfolding where every strike's importance is elevated.
Forestieri's goal output didn't dry up when he exited Hillsborough, going on to be a success again after exiting Wednesday on a free transfer four years ago.
What Forestieri did after leaving Sheffield Wednesday
The ageing forward would relocate to the Serie A to strut his stuff with Udinese in the immediate aftermath of his exit from Hillsborough, with the 5 foot 8 star struggling to adjust to his new surroundings after an extended period playing in England.
The two-time Italy U21 international would only bag two goals in total for his new Italian side from 28 appearances, leaving Udinese as quickly as he entered after failing to ever really dazzle his new set of supporters.
Thankfully for Forestieri, instead of his career gradually fizzling out after this failed move abroad, he would recapture his prolific best again in front of goal when joining Johor Darul Ta'zim all the way out in Malaysia in 2022.
Not content at just seeing out his career with mediocre displays in the sun, the veteran forward would become a goal machine over a short but fruitful two-season stay – his final full campaign for the Malaysia Super League side culminating in the 5 foot 8 creator bowing out with a staggering 19 goals from just 20 games in the league.

Now without a club as the end of his career inevitably comes into view, there must have been some pondering on Wednesday's end at their very worst this season over whether a punt on a reunion for Forestieri was a worthwhile avenue to explore.
Rohl and Co will just aim to keep plugging on and grinding out wins with an escape from the relegation mire a very real possibility now, hoping that figures such as Ugbo and Poveda are remembered as giants in Wednesday quarters if safety is secured in a similar fashion to that of Forestieri at his prime.

Having set out upon a gruelling twin tour of the UK for the World Cup and the Ashes, he witnessed a pair of strong and successful campaigns without either fully satisfying

Australia’s coach Justin Langer wore a rueful look on his face as his players lifted the urn at The Oval, having lost to England by some distance in the final Test and so failed to win the series. Having set out upon a gruelling twin tour of the UK for the World Cup and the Ashes, he witnessed a pair of strong and successful campaigns without either fully satisfying. With the benefit of a few moments’ reflection, Langer reckoned that while there had been great improvement in the Australian team over his 16 months in charge so far, there would need to be a greater level of ruthlessness if they are to graduate from World Cup semi-finalists and Ashes retainers to consistent series and tournament winners.”It’s something we’re getting better at, how we back up after a win,” Langer said in reference to how the Edgbaston and Old Trafford victories had been followed by a draw at Lord’s and defeat at The Oval. “That probably comes with the maturity of the group as well. It’s ok to fight back when you are underdogs and it’s one of those Australian things – we love the underdog tag. To fight back from a tough loss is admirable and I said how proud I was with everyone for that.”But also over the last couple of years we haven’t necessarily performed at our best after a win. Really good teams do that. We didn’t do that too well after the first Test at Lord’s. We didn’t do it after this Test. There have been some Test series over the last couple of years where the team hasn’t been able to. I think that’ll be part of the maturity of our side. If you probably think about it, the way we were in this series, we aren’t a great team yet.”We are a good team, we are a maturing team. We have got some great players in it. But we’re aspiring to be a great cricket team. You got to work hard and get consistent results to achieve that. That comes from experience and learning how to win. That comes with players individually getting more experienced and the team working together. Those sort of things evolve I think. I think back to the start of my career, in 1993, we had some senior players but we didn’t necessarily win all the time. And that we learnt to do through Steve Waugh’s era. We learnt to be ruthless but we also had seven or eight great players and a number of very good players and a couple of good ones like me. But that takes time to develop and evolve.”Getty Images
Something that Langer will have to balance coming home from England will be how the Test team will have perhaps three spots settled in the batting line-up for the home summer, but also how to pick David Warner back up after he was thoroughly beaten by Stuart Broad across this series. Warner was not alone as a struggling left-hand batsman at the top of the order, but he is the one player in that group who possesses a career record suggesting that it was a temporary problem rather than a defining one.”I think, talking frankly, he let Stuart Broad get into his head and he thought way too much about it,” Langer said. “I’ve seen it before, even with the great players, every now and then they have a series – and I’m talking about the all-time great players – they have a series where…I remember Gilly (Adam Gilchrist) with Andrew Flintoff, I remember seeing Steve Waugh sit on the team bus in South Africa and the guy had been a run machine for so long, he got out just before stumps and I, in a sick sort of way, thought it was the best thing I’d ever seen.”I didn’t think great players had lean runs. I used to have lean runs all the time but even great players have lean runs and I’m sure David – we know he’s a very good player, there’s no question about that – but he had it tough, particularly against Stuart Broad. I used to have it against Murali (Muttiah Muralitharan) and I couldn’t solve the issue and it’s so hard when you try to problem solve and then you’re in the middle of a big series trying to solve the puzzle.”In this instance I don’t think David solved the puzzle, and he’ll be first to admit that, he’ll probably be very relieved he gets on the Qantas flight in a day’s time and doesn’t have to face Stuart Broad for a while I reckon. But he is certainly, there’s plenty of upside still to his batting. I’ve learned over a long period you never write off champion players, it doesn’t matter what sport, you never write off champion players. They tend to come good, don’t they? So he’s had a tough series, no doubt about that, but he’s also a champion player so usually with champion players they get a bit more time to come good.”Langer was gratified by the displays of Steven Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon, while also appreciating how Matthew Wade had battled his way through the trials of the series to notch a pair of book-ending centuries. “We cut to the chase, I thought our bowling throughout this series was absolutely world-class. I think we talked throughout about the maturity and healthy group of fast bowlers that we were able to have on the park,” he said. “The bowlers were brilliant. Nathan Lyon as well and the way they all stepped up at different times.Getty Images
“But we didn’t bat well enough. I said this at the start of the series that the team that bats well will win the series. I said it consistently enough and we didn’t bat well enough. That’s the truth. I mean Steve Smith was obviously outstanding. What a pleasure to watch. He’s a brilliant young man but what a pleasure to watch him bat. I thought the development of Marnus was exciting. He worked so hard. He’s a bit in the Steve Smith mould of the players that you love to see do well. He worked so hard.”The way Matthew Wade scored two centuries in this series, obviously including today. We talked about him knocking so hard to get an opportunity. He did that and then to back up with two Test centuries in an Ashes series showed great fight and great skill. I loved Matthew Wade’s footwork. But we certainly fell short in other areas and we need to work on that.”In addition to ruthlessness, Langer had a simple goal based on what he had seen in England in 2019 – find a batting line-up that will better capitalise on the current riches in Australia’s bowling stocks. “With this exciting fast bowling group we’ve got, if we start batting well we’ll win a lot of games of cricket,” he said. “We go to Australia to play two pink ball Test matches, against two good sides in Pakistan and New Zealand, two day-night Test matches will be exciting.”There’s a real challenge for young Australian batters, the ones who want to step up and score lots of runs and work hard on their footwork patterns and techniques and ability to score runs it’s a pretty exciting time. That’s a big challenge.”

Outgoing CoA member says her public differences with Vinod Rai weren’t anything personal, but just based on principles

Diana Edulji and Vinod Rai emerge from a CoA meeting•Getty Images
Among the first four members of the now outgoing Committee of Administrators (CoA), Diana Edulji has agreed with new BCCI president Sourav Ganguly’s view of giving priority to first-class cricketers in India. Edulji said the CoA was working towards that but “could not finish” it. The CoA is set to hand over the reins of the BCCI to the new office bearers on October 23.Speaking on her penultimate day in the BCCI after meeting the other two CoA members to wind up their duties, Edulji also looked back at her 33-month period, including their achievements and even the differences she had with Vinod Rai, saying she did not expect her “nightwatchman” duties to last so long.”Yes, a lot more work [has to be done], we were working on that but could not finish it,” Edulji said in Mumbai at the BCCI headquarters about the first-class circuit. “The players, the domestic structure does need a look in, so we can attract more cricketers to the game and let’s hope for the best.”Among the numerous issues Ganguly has already addressed even before officially taking over as the president, was “taking care of” the share of revenue the BCCI gets from the ICC, which reduced in 2017. When asked if the CoA was somehow responsible for the drop in the BCCI’s revenue share, Edulji said, “I would not want to comment on that because I would not want to say I have done something wrong or they are saying something wrong. Let’s see how it goes forward, all the best to them (new administrators).”Appointed by the Supreme Court in January 2017, Edulji and Rai had taken over, along with Ramachanda Guha and Vikram Limaye, to oversee the running of the BCCI. Guha later resigned while Limaye moved on, and Lt Gen (retd) Ravi Thodge joined the duo of Rai and Edulji earlier this year.”It was a good experience and a long journey,” Edulji said. “Didn’t think that the journey would last so long, but I am happy with the end result that elections and office bearers are coming back and BCCI will be run by them now.”No, not all (no regrets). We (Rai and Edulji) have had our differences and we aired it openly also. In any organisation, that works. And I have always batted on the front foot or bowled my armers well, but no nothing personal. It was just (on) principles that stands were taken and that’s it.”If I wanted to say something, I have always called a spade a spade and I don’t hold back. I have enjoyed my journey of 33 months, I never expected it to be so long, and as Mr Rai said, it was a nightwatchman, but this was more than a nightwatchman also. I’ve never heard of a nightwatchman scoring a double-hundred or triple-hundred (laughs). It was a great learning experience, handling BCCI and I hope I can do something more after I finish my cooling period (laughs).”Was the CoA able to implement all the reforms as they were defined by the Supreme Court and the Lodha Committee’s recommendations?”Yes and no,” she said. The CoA had taken over the supervision of the BCCI during troubled times after the board was hit by a betting scandal in the IPL and the matter was taken to the Supreme Court, but Edulji steered clear of blaming previous office bearers, under whom the board had landed in trouble.”I would not want to run down the people before, I wouldn’t say that we have done a better job than them,” she said. “Whatever role we had, we tried to complete our duties, let’s hope it goes forward and they take in the right spirit whatever we have done and move on. Life has to move on.”It is good that a [former] player [has become a president], he knows in and out what players’ require…when he was a player what he expected from BCCI, and now when he is sitting on that seat, I wish him all the best and let’s hope that he will do well and cricket should do well.”The final official CoA meeting with the three members lasted about two hours on Tuesday afternoon after which Lt Gen Thodge said they had finished implementing “almost” all of their tasks and responsibilities.”We’ve almost implemented things the way we wanted to,” Thodge said. “There are certain things to be done, our status report has been submitted to the court and we’ll see whatever comes.”Thodge also elaborated on the conflict of interest issue that’s been coming up time and again, and was even mentioned in the CoA’s 11th and final status report they submitted to the Supreme Court last week.”We (CoA and Ganguly) are in agreement with it and the last time when we had a meeting here, Sourav attended on video conference from Calcutta and we had lots of discussions on that issue,” Thodge said. “He’s aware, and it’s one thing that needs to be addressed otherwise we’ll have a problem in having anybody as a coach or for any BCCI appointment it will be an issue.”So to facilitate cricketers being involved in the cricket administration, it is essential that conflict of interest has to be relooked into, it’s not that it should totally go. Where the personal and financial benefits are there, those will be taken care of. But if the interest of cricket suffers because of conflict of interest then it needs to be addressed. I think he (Ganguly) has mentioned that same point because we had almost a three-hour discussion at that time and he’s got his views on that.”
Manchester United have become known to overpay for talent over the years, with plenty of those signings failing to perform.
This has been evident right up until this season, with the likes of £82m Antony and £73m Jadon Sancho being recent examples of that.
However, it hasn’t been just the incomings that have been an issue at the club, with the Red Devils often failing to recoup their money via sales.
That said, there have been scenarios where United have even profited on players, with one former Red being sold for £30m in 2021 and now actually worth less than marmite figure Harry Maguire.
Harry Maguire’s market value in 2024
In 2019, Maguire moved to Man United from Leicester City for a world-record fee for a defender, costing the club £80m.

In his first season, the England international was a constant figure in the starting lineup, starting every game and commanding the defence to 13 clean sheets in the Premier League.
However, the number five has endured a difficult spell over the past few seasons, starting just eight league matches in Erik ten Hag’s debut campaign.
That said, Maguire has seemingly revived his United career to an extent this term, starting 13 games and winning the Premier League Player of the Month award for December.
Despite this upturn in form, according to Transfermarkt, Maguire is now worth just £17m, which is a significant loss on United’s end.
That's unlike one former United player who the club played a blinder on.
Daniel James' transfer value in 2024
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer began his reign as Man United manager by making Daniel James his first signing, which cost £15m in the same summer that Maguire joined the club.
The Welsh winger signed for the Red Devils from Swansea City, and life in Manchester couldn’t have started any better, scoring in three of his first four matches.
Dan James
The rapid attacker would only spend two seasons at Old Trafford after starting just 11 Premier League games in his second campaign, moving to huge rival Leeds United in a deal worth £30m.
During the 2021/22 season, James made 34 appearances in the top flight for Leeds, scoring four goals and providing five assists, but he spent last season on loan at Fulham.
The former Red Devil is now enjoying his football in the Championship, where he is helping Leeds charge towards promotion with 11 goals and seven assists so far, but he’s still valued less than Maguire, with Transfermarkt estimating his worth to be £12m.

As you can see, this would put him among the least valued players in Ten Hag’s side if he were still at the club, while also being £5m less than Maguire.
While the signing of Maguire has been a complete disaster for the club, the business behind James' has been somewhat of a success.
Selling the 26-year-old to Leeds in 2021 looks to have been a masterclass by United, especially considering they doubled their money on the attacker, and today's estimated value of James just further supports that the Red Devils made the correct decision three years ago.

Matheus Cunha, Craig Dawson and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde are also struggling with injuries, but they will be assessed over the next couple of days to see whether they could play a part or not.
Suffering injuries at this stage of the season is unavailable, but O’Neil will be hoping it does not steer the Old Gold off track. The former Bournemouth manager must wish he could call on some of the players he currently has out on loan in order to fill the gaps in his first-team squad.
How Wolves’ players are doing out on loan
O’Neil shipped out a few fringe players during the summer and winter windows on temporary deals for them to gain some much-needed game time.
Daniel Podence is currently shining for Olympiakos this term, scoring 12 goals and chipping in with eight assists for the Greek side this season, indicating that he could have a part to play for Wolves next season.
Fabio Silva has scored four goals during his spell at Glasgow Rangers, while Luke Cundle has impressed in the Championship this term, spending time at both Plymouth Argyle and Stoke City.

These two youngsters could force their way into contention next season, especially if O’Neil gives them a consistent run in the starting XI.
The Old Gold have a plethora of attacking options at their disposal, but it looks as though the English coach needs to invest in some more defenders ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.
Yerson Mosquera is currently with Villarreal until the end of the season, but there is no doubt the Colombian has what it takes to be a long-term option for O’Neil at the heart of his defence.
Yerson Mosquera’s statistics for Villarreal
When it was clear that first-team football was going to be hard to come by at Wolves, the defender joined the La Liga side on a deal until the end of the season.
"Yerson had a fantastic loan at Cincinnati, being one of the highest performing centre-backs in the league,” said Matt Hobbs, current sporting director at the club.
"What we've seen really excites us for next season. It was a difficult decision, as we could have kept him around, but we wanted him to get a bit more football week in, week out, ready to come back and fight for a starting spot next season."
The move made sense and since arriving in Spain, the youngster has made nine appearances, scoring against Marseille in the Europa League last 16 defeat earlier this month.
Despite only arriving in January, the Colombian currently ranks in the top ten in the squad for accurate passes per game and clearances per game, proving he has already made a positive impact on the team.
Football talent scout Jacek Kulig hailed the centre-back as “dominant” back in 2021 when he was making his breakthrough with Atlético Nacional in his homeland.
With Craig Dawson coming to the end of his career, could there be a space for Mosquera in the starting XI next season alongside Toti Gomes?
Toti Gomes’ statistics for Wolves this season
Gomes was another centre-back at the club who was underused prior to O’Neil arriving. This season has seen the Portugease titan become a mainstay in the starting XI, improving with every game.
Not only does he rank third among his teammates for accurate passes per game (38.3), but the 25-year-old also ranks fifth for tackles per game (1.4) and fourth for interceptions per game (0.8), showcasing his defensive abilities in what has been a solid campaign for the Old Gold thus far.
The centre-back has also displayed excellent attacking statistics. When compared to his positional peers in Europe’s top five leagues, Gomes currently ranks in the top 4% for assists per game (0.11), the top 2% for successful take-ons per 90 (0.81) and the top 8% for progressive passes received per 90 (0.99), indicating his love of taking opposition players on while showing intent in getting into more advanced positions on a regular basis.
Wolverhampton Wanderers centre-back Toti Gomes.
These attributes have stood him in good stead so far this season, making 32 appearances for Wolves, scoring once, and grabbing three assists, ensuring he could be a long-term partner for the returning Mosquera.
O'Neil typically utilises a three-man defence which could see the Colombian slot in for Dawson next season, especially as the Englishman will be 34 years old at the start of the campaign.
Last season for FC Cincinnati, Mosquera was outstanding at the heart of their defence. Not only did he win a staggering 7.1 total duels per game – a success rate of 61% – but he also helped his team keep nine clean sheets, made 1.8 tackles per game along with being dribbled past just 0.7 times per match, fully demonstrating his physical strength and defensive nous.
Combine this with Toti’s penchant for moving the ball forward from the back and advancing forward whenever possible, it looks as though O’Neil has an ideal defensive partnership just waiting to be unleashed next season.
Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Gary O'Neil.
While he may like to delve into the transfer market to bring another centre-back into the squad, the return of the 22-year-old from his loan spell could be like a new signing, as the old cliché goes.
There is no doubt he needs a run in the team to see if he can handle Premier League football, but his performances for Villarreal this term suggest that playing in the English top flight shouldn’t faze him in the slightest.
