Concussion substitutes set to debut in Ashes

The issue is on the agenda at the ongoing ICC annual conference, and ESPNcricinfo understands the changes to playing conditions will almost certainly be approved

Concussion substitutes are likely to be introduced to international cricket in time for the men’s Ashes Test series next month. The issue is on the agenda at the ICC annual conference, currently being held in London, and ESPNcricinfo understands the changes to playing conditions will almost certainly be approved and implemented quickly, so that all matches played in the World Test Championship will have the same safety protocols in place. The discussion surrounding the use of concussion substitutes has grown since the inquest held in Australia following the death of Phillip Hughes, who was struck on the head by a ball during a Sheffield Shield match in November 2014. It also occurs at a time when the wider sports world has become more aware of both the short- and long-term effects of concussion.Cricket Australia introduced concussion substitutes to their men’s and women’s domestic one-day cups and the BBL and WBBL for the 2016-17 season. But they had to wait for ICC approval to be granted in May 2017 before they could introduce it to the Sheffield Shield the following year and maintain the competition’s first-class status. The ICC have conducted trials and also used research carried out by CA into cricket-specific effects of concussion. During the recently concluded Men’s World Cup, there was a concerted push to increase education around recognising the symptoms of and highlighting the dangers of continuing to play with concussion. There was also a range of protocols in place: every team had a nominated Team Medical Representative and there was an independent match-day doctor at every game to provide support. But this highlights some of the challenges of bringing concussion subs into the international game. During Sri Lanka’s Test tour of Australia earlier this year, both Kusal Mendis and Dimuth Karunaratne were struck on the head and were taken to hospital, only to be subsequently cleared to play. But the Sri Lankan management team did not include a doctor and so both teams were treated by members of the Australian medical staff. It is not yet clear if the introduction of the substitute rule will include mandatory levels of medical staff or independent doctors, or if an independent doctor would be required at all international matches. The ICC annual conference will conclude on Friday.

Emery benches Tielemans in predicted Aston Villa lineup vs Man Utd

Aston Villa saw one of their chances at ending a near three-decade wait for a major trophy end in midweek as they crashed out of the FA Cup following a 3-1 defeat to Chelsea.

Unai Emery now arguably has only the Europa Conference League to aim for if he wishes to win something this season, and considering West Ham United were victorious last term, it could pave the way for Villa to follow suit in May.

The Spaniard will now turn his attention to the Premier League clash against Manchester United tomorrow afternoon, as the Red Devils make their way to the Midlands.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery during a Premier League game.

Erik ten Hag’s side are on a decent run of form, winning four of their previous five matches and remaining undefeated in 2024.

The 52-year-old manager may make some changes to his team following the below-par performance against a struggling Blues side in midweek…

1 GK – Emiliano Martínez

The Argentine will not be displaced from the starting XI ahead of what could be a vital fixture for both teams tomorrow.

The former Arsenal goalkeeper conceded three times against United during the 3-2 defeat on Boxing Day last year, yet he has kept a clean sheet in two of his previous three league matches, and hopefully he will secure another one on Sunday.

2 RB – Matty Cash

Matty Cash.

The English-born Poland international will start his first league match since the 3-1 defeat against Newcastle United at the end of January and Emery will be looking for him to make an impact against United.

Cash did win four out of his five duels against Chelsea and succeeded with 100% of his dribble attempts and made two key passes. Another display like this could help Villa massively.

3 CB – Diego Carlos

With Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa out injured, the Brazilian has come into the starting XI and performed solidly enough.

He completed 91% of his passes and won four out of six aerial duels against the Blues, but they still found the back of the net three times, and he will have to be wary against United, especially with the form they are in currently.

4 CB – Pau Torres

Aston Villa central defender Pau Torres.

The towering "Rolls-Royce" – as described by journalist Graeme Bailey – was named on the bench for the defeat in midweek but could make his return form injury tomorrow, with the pairing of Diego Carlos and Clement Lenglet shipping three goals.

The £100k-per-week talent was reportedly a target for the Red Devils prior to the signing of Lisandro Martinez in 2022 and could prove a key figure in dowing Ten Hag's men at Villa Park.

5 LB – Alex Moreno

Aston Villa defender Alex Moreno.

Lucas Digne is nearing a return to action, but the clash against Ten Hag’s men tomorrow could come too soon for the Frenchman.

This means Moreno will make his eighth start in a row and, since returning to the first team following an injury, he has scored three goals in just 15 matches, suggesting that he is a decent goal threat.

6 CM – Douglas Luiz

Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz

Arguably one of Villa’s most important players this season. Luiz has transformed his game and has emerged as a more attacking threat this season.

This is evidenced by the fact he has registered 14 goal contributions in all competitions – seven goals and seven assists, while his influence will be crucial against United tomorrow.

7 CM – Boubacar Kamara

The Frenchman has missed just four league matches during the 2023/24 campaign – all down to suspension – and when he is fit and available, he forms a solid partnership with Luiz in the middle of the pitch.

The Brazilian tends to push forward more often than Kamara, but the former Marseille gem provides a reliable defensive acumen which helps protect the back four.

8 RW – Leon Bailey

Aston Villa forward Leon Bailey.

If Luiz is one of Villa’s most important players this term, then Bailey has every right to be considered as one of the most improved.

Last term, he managed only nine goal contributions – five goals and four assists – while this season, the Jamaican has already scored ten times and grabbed nine assists in all competitions, firmly establishing himself as the main attacking outlet on the right flank, and he will start against the Red Devils.

9 AM – Moussa Diaby

Although usually deployed on the wing for Bayer Leverkusen, Diaby has found himself operating in a number of positions this season and against the Red Devils, he could play in the number ten role, just behind Watkins.

He scored his sixth goal of the season against Chelsea in midweek after coming off the bench, and he will replace Youri Tielemans in the starting XI.

The Belgian completed just 60% of his passes and lost possession ten times during his time on the pitch, thus meaning he should drop to the bench.

10 LW – John McGinn

John McGinn

The captain is another name who finds himself as a key performer under Emery, with the Scot starting all but two matches this season, scoring eight goals in the process.

He found the back of the net during the last clash against the Old Trafford side and Emery will be hoping he can repeat the trick tomorrow, albeit with a different result at the end of the game.

How Tim Bresnan turned down Steven Smith as rain rules the roost in the Blast

The latest snippets from the county circuit, including Delray Rawlins’ Bermuda return and Middlesex’s quarter-final preparations

David Hopps and Matt Roller20-Aug-2019

A young Steven Smith asked Tim Bresnan how he could get a deal playing for Yorkshire to no avail•Getty Images

In the winter of 2005-06, Tim Bresnan was a 20-year-old playing for Sutherland in grade cricket in New South Wales, when a 16-year-old allrounder broke into the first team.”He’d scored a few in second grade and got in because one of the lads, as they do at that level, had just gone on holiday or whatever,” Bresnan recounted. “He came in, got 70-odd and was difficult to dislodge. He played for the rest of the season.”In his typical style, Bresnan was to-the-point when the teenager asked if he might be able to get a game as an overseas player in county cricket. “He said, ‘Hey, can I come and play for Yorkshire?’ I was like, ‘Woah, hold your horses big lad. We’re full up and you’re not that good yet. Just grab yourself a couple of bats out of my kit bag and score some runs.'”The teenager’s name? Steven Smith. Whatever happened to him?***Two washouts in a week for Kent has ended Canterbury’s record as the ground least likely to suffer an abandonment since Twenty20 cricket came on to the scene in England in 2003.That accolade now rests with the two major London grounds – The Oval and Lord’s – further proof if it was needed that the capital has things all its own way.Not that Kent suffered too much in terms of their position in South Group as Friday night’s programme was entirely washed out – bringing this season’s number of no-results to 24 – more than 25% of the total matches. The grounds most likely to suffer an abandonment in the past 16 years? Nobody will be too surprised to see Chester-le-Street and Cardiff at the top of the list

***Worcestershire’s staggering win against Durham at Chester-le-Street on Thursday night when they conceded an opening stand of 79 in 11.4 overs yet still defended their 117 for 7 with three runs to spare was one of the great backs-to-the-wall victories in the history of the Blast. The defending champions regained second spot in North Group behind Lancashire who visit New Road on Sunday. It would be nice if it didn’t rain for once.A supporter tucks into a slice of cake in the Ladies Pavilion at New Road•Getty Images

Worcestershire’s resolve was all the more impressive considering that they have been criss-crossing from white- to red-ball cricket far more than other counties.Worcestershire have gone eight games without a win in the Championship – after winning the first two matches – to leave them with only a slim chance of finishing in the top three and regaining their Division One spot at the first attempt.”This year was never going to be straightforward, particularly with the scheduling we’ve had,” first-team coach, Alex Gidman, said. “It has been very, very tough. I think by this time next week we would have played three red-ball games in the campaign since the Blast started whereas everyone, apart from Gloucestershire, would only have played one which makes it very hard.”The lads have admittedly struggled to find a playing rhythm but you have seen that character and determination on Thursday which has got us to where we are.”With a Championship round plonked in the middle of the Blast this week, Worcestershire have a chance to show that resolve in four-day cricket. They desperately need a victory to revive their chances of finishing in the top three.***Dawid Malan announced himself with 103 for Middlesex at The Oval in their 2008 quarter-final•Getty Images

This column brought you the news two weeks ago that Lancashire are struggling to work out where they would host a home quarter-final due to a clash with Old Trafford’s Ashes Test, and it has emerged that Middlesex are facing a similar quandary.Assuming they finish in the top two, Middlesex will be keen to hold a knockout tie at Lord’s, but if they do it could be in front of a diminished crowd: the Compton and Edrich Stands at the ground are set for a redevelopment, starting in late August, so by the time of the quarter-finals in the first week of September, they will be out of action. The reported that the club is working with the MCC plans to ensure most of the ground can be used, and logistical reasons mean that it is unlikely an outground would be used, but if any decision-makers are superstitious, perhaps they might consider summoning the spirit of their victorious 2008 team. That year, the quarter-final dates clashed with the Lord’s Test, so Middlesex played host to Lancashire at The Oval, where a 20-year-old Dawid Malan scored 103 to rescue them from 21 for 4 and send them to Finals Day. And after Malan’s ton there earlier this season, he might not think a cross-town switch would be such a bad idea.***Delray Rawlins has been in red-hot form for Bermuda•Getty Images

Delray Rawlins has been granted two weeks off by Sussex to play in the ICC T20 World Cup Americas Region Qualifiers for his native Bermuda, and made quite the impression in his first game for his country since 2016.Coming in at four, and facing a hat-trick ball, Rawlins ended up with a 63 that underpinned his team’s 141 for 7 in their first match against the US, before taking 1 for 26 in his four overs and adding two catches to secure a six-run victory. His team-mates for the ongoing tournament include Malachi Jones, the seamer who found Robin Uthappa’s outside edge at the 2007 World Cup to set up the mighty Dwayne Leverock for his memorable slip catch, and Leverock’s own nephew Kamau, who is on Nottinghamshire’s books. It is hoped that Rawlins will return in time for Sussex’s penultimate Blast group game, against Glamorgan on Bank Holiday Monday, though that will require him to emulate Chris Green by playing two games on different continents in the space of 24 hours.***Michael Klinger questions an over-rate penalty with Umpire Ian Gould•Getty Images

England’s World Cup victory robbed Ian Gould of what potentially could have been a deserved climax to his international umpiring career. In the event, poor old “Gunner” did not even get a semi. But Gould is still a welcome and ebullient presence on the county circuit – if not necessarily for Gloucestershire, who lost a close Blast encounter against Sussex at Bristol recently after he awarded six penalty runs against them for a slow over rate ahead of the final over.He will also be busy this autumn, teaming up with the respected Sussex journalist Bruce Talbot for an autobiography that could spill the beans on controversies ranging from the “Sandpapergate” to the Sri Lankans walking off the field during a Test in the West Indies. That is one worth looking out for.

West Ham could let one of their highest-profile players leave with Paqueta

Another one of David Moyes' crop could "become one of the highest-profile players to quit West Ham" in the summer alongside the exit links surrounding Lucas Paqueta.

Clubs circle Paqueta for summer 2024 transfer

According to recent reports, Paqueta may well follow former captain Declan Rice out the door later this year as another marquee West Ham sale becomes more and more possible.

The Brazilian is currently subject to an investigation around gambling breaches, but once that clears, it is believed the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham and Man City have all made it clear they're interested in Paqueta (Claret & Hugh).

Last year, Man City were attempting to sign West Ham's star player but ultimately pulled the plug when he was accused of his betting charges.

"Following the recent betting-related allegations made against Lucas Paqueta, Manchester City are now internally discussing the Brazilian’s potential transfer," Fabrizio Romano wrote in his CaughtOffside substack last summer.

"The deal between Manchester City and West Ham is currently off. We can say that is 99% collapsed and we’re just waiting for the final communication, but this is the feeling. The situation is very clear."

City could be back in again for Paqueta later this year, alongside other big English clubs, but he isn't the only West Ham mainstay who could well depart this year.

High profile exit could follow Paqueta

According to journalist Pete O'Rourke, writing for Football Insider, that player may be defender Nayef Aguerd. The Morocco international, who's started 19 league games this season, is subject to interest from Saudi Arabia and it is believed his departure from Rush Green is a distinct possibility this summer.

Aguerd could be one of the "highest profile players" to leave West Ham, according to O'Rourke, and it is something the club could green-light despite "extensive speculation" surrounding Kurt Zouma's future as well.

The 27-year-old, who went to AFCON mid-season, has made some defensive errors in big games this season but was praised as one of the "best defenders in Europe" by former teammate Achraf Sidki.

“West Ham have signed one of the best defenders in Europe,” Sidki told The Athletic. “I’m so proud that one of my former teammates will be playing in the Premier League. I’m surprised he didn’t move to England sooner. When we were younger we both had big dreams of becoming professional footballers. Nayef has done well, and I’m confident he will be a great signing for West Ham."

It is unclear yet as to how much West Ham will demand for the North African's services, or if they have a replacement plan, but this could be one to watch.

Gil Langley dies aged 81

Gil Langley, the Australian Test wicketkeeper who also represented his state at football before becoming Speaker of the House in state parliament, died on Monday night in an Adelaide nursing home at the age of 81 following a long illness

Rick Eyre14-Sep-2019Gil Langley, the Australian Test wicketkeeper who also represented his state at football before becoming Speaker of the House in state parliament, died on Monday night in an Adelaide nursing home at the age of 81 following a long illness.Langley played 26 Tests for Australia from 1951-52 to 1956, in which he held 83 catches and made 15 stumpings. He made his first-class debut for South Australia as a specialist batsman in 1945-46, immediately after the conclusion of the Second World War. He donned the gloves during the 1947-48 Sheffield Shield season, and by 1949-50 was chosen as deputy wicketkeeper to Ron Saggers for the Australian tour of South Africa. Both Saggers and Langley remained in the shadow of the great Queenslander Don Tallon whenever he was available for Australia, but following the retirement of his two peers, Langley received his first call-up to the Test side in the 1951-52 series against the West Indies. On his debut, at the Gabba, Brisbane, he took three catches and four stumpings in Australia’s three-wicket victory, going on to claim 21 victims for the series. He remained Australia’s first choice wicketkeeper until 1956, playing his last Test match against India at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. In addition to his 98 dismissals, and scored 374 runs in Tests at 14.96 with a top score of 53.Despite being part of a well-beaten Australian side in England in 1956, and missing two Tests because of injury, he was recognised by Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack as one of its five cricketers of the year in its 1957 edition. In the Lord’s Test of 1956 he completed nine dismissals – at the time a world Test record – in Australia’s only win of the series. In all first-class cricket he made 122 appearances, taking 292 catches and 77 stumpings. He scored 3236 runs at an average of 25.68 and a top score of 160 not out. The last of his four centuries was achieved in his final game for South Australia, against New South Wales at Adelaide Oval in December 1956. Given three cheers by his opponents as he came to the crease in the second innings, Langley made exactly 100, scoring a boundary after 6pm on the final day before being stumped next ball off the bowling of Richie Benaud.Langley was also a successful Australian Rules footballer, who played for the Sturt club in the SANFL (South Australian National Football League) and went on to captain South Australia in interstate football competition. While transferred to Melbourne in the munitions department during the Second World War, he played for Essendon in the Victorian Football League, making four first team appearances and sitting on the reserve bench in the losing grand final side of 1943.Langley achieved a rare double, equalled only by Victor Richardson, of captaining Sturt in both cricket and football.A popular identity in Adelaide, Langley later entered politics and became the Member for Unley in the state House of Assembly, representing the Australian Labor Party. During his 20 year parliamentary career he became Speaker of the House.Gilbert Roche Andrews Langley was born on September 14, 1919 in North Adelaide. He is survived by four children. His nephew, Jeff Langley, played cricket for South Australia and Queensland between 1969-70 and 1979-80.

David Sullivan could now offer 34 y/o a player-coach role at West Ham

West Ham United chairman David Sullivan and the club's board could now move to offer a 34-year-old a player-coach role at Rush Green.

Moyes future remains unresolved at West Ham

Just when manager David Moyes was beginning to ease the pressure on himself with back-to-back Premier League wins, West Ham unfortunately lost the first leg of their Europa League last 16 tie on Thursday evening.

West Ham eyeing Moyes replacement who's won 9 major trophies in his career

The east Londoners have been repeatedly linked with a new head coach in recent weeks.

Freiburg snatched a 1-0 win over West Ham in Germany, giving Moyes' side the task of turning over their deficit if they're to reach the quarter-finals and potentially go on another impressive run. Moyes was vocal in his praise for West Ham's record in Europe before their defeat to Freiburg, but the Scotsman was in less good spirits when commenting on his side's denied last-gasp penalty appeal.

"If we'd had it given against us, we'd probably think it was harsh, but ultimately I have to say what are you doing with your hands above your head?" said Moyes on West Ham's denied penalty against Freiburg.

"They are trying to claim there might have been a slight push and that's why it wasn't given – but they should have restarted the game with a free-kick if they said it was a push. It certainly wasn't enough of a push to warrant a free-kick, so that shouldn't mean that it should even come into consideration. The boy has two arms above his head.

"In the Premier League, I am not sure that would be given, but in UEFA competitions in Europe they're normally given by the referees. I watch Spanish football and German football and nearly every handball is seen. If you think of the one we had against Kurt [Zouma at Everton] the other day, but we just have to take it and move on."

This defeat abroad perhaps reminds the Hammers hierarchy of an imminent decision facing them over Moyes' future. The 60-year-old is out of contract at the end of this season, and there have been reports that West Ham are assessing alternatives to Moyes.

In the meantime, though, it is believed Sullivan and co are plotting another staff change.

West Ham could offer Aaron Cresswell player-coach role

According to Football Insider and journalist Wayne Veysey, defender Aaron Cresswell could be set for quite the promotion.

Indeed, as per their information, West Ham could offer Cresswell a player-coach role to remain at the London Stadium past 2023/2024. The left-back has been a wonderful servant for West Ham over his near-decade-long spell, and with his contract expiring this summer, it is believed the Irons may offer him a route into staying for the foreseeable.

The former Ipswich Town defender has been a bit-part member of Moyes' squad this season, playing just four league games.
