Talks held: Leicester City "beast" now in discussions to leave King Power

Leicester City could be set to lose one of their first-team stars next year, with a reliable journalist revealing that he’s in talks to join an overseas club in the summer.

Leicester's recent departures

Over the summer, Enzo Maresca’s side sanctioned the sales of 12 players in total, with nine of those being on a permanent basis, while the remaining three were sent out on loan for the remainder of the season to increase their experience and game time.

The Foxes have Kelechi Iheanacho, Dennis Praet, Jannik Vestergaard, Jamie Vardy, Marc Albrighton, Alex Smithies and Wanya Marcal who will have all reached the expiration of their deals at the end of the current campaign (Leicester contracts), so they could also soon be heading for the Championship exit door.

The King Power Stadium’s defensive midfielder Wilfred Ndidi is another player who will have seen out his terms upon the conclusion of this season, and with potential suitors on alert that he might be available for transfer, the 26-year-old is attracting interest.

The Nigeria international has recently emerged as a target for Tottenham Hotspur, Brentford, Aston Villa, Newcastle United, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, though if the following update is to be believed, he’s actually opened negotiations with a different admirer in Spain.

Wilfred Ndidi in talks to join Sevilla

Taking to X, journalist Santi Aouna confirmed that Sevilla and Ndidi are in discussions regarding a move that would see him join next summer, but it's believed that the star would rather remain in England should a chance present itself, specifically in the Premier League.

He wrote: “EXCL: #Championship. Sevilla FC are keen on signing Wilfred Ndidi next summer. Talks have already started between his agent and Victor Orta, the sporting director. PL is his priority but Sevilla option remains open for his future.”

Leicester City midfielderWilfred Ndidi.

Leicester need to keep "wall" in Ndidi

Whilst Ndidi, dubbed a “beast” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, is naturally a defensive midfielder, he’s been much stronger in the offensive aspect of his game since the start of this season having posted seven contributions, four assists and three goals, in 15 appearances across all competitions (Transfermarkt – Ndidi statistics).

The Lagos native, who pockets £75k-per-week (Leicester salaries), also currently ranks in the 99th percentile for attacking touches in the opposition’s penalty area (FBRef – Ndidi statistics), highlighting his desire to create chances in the final third.

Wilfred Ndidi's Style Of Play

Likes to play short passes

Counter attack threat

Likes to tackle

Sponsored by Nike, the talisman is even a versatile operator having been deployed in six various positions over the grass following his arrival on the professional scene, including three roles in the midfield and everywhere across the backline.

According to Kulig, Ndidi is a “wall” in the centre of the park with the physical presence that he provides so even the thought of losing him could be viewed as a real blow, therefore, it’s important that chiefs try and convince him to stay by offering him a new contract over the coming months.

£7m Leeds star deserves as much praise as Summerville

Leeds United kept up their unbelievable home record in the Championship this season with a dramatic 3-2 win over Middlesbrough on Saturday, Elland Road's reputation as a fortress stronger than ever with Daniel Farke's Whites still unbeaten on their own patch.

The 3-2 victory was Leeds' seventh win at home from ten games played in familiar West Yorkshire, a record only bettered by Kieran McKenna's mightily impressive Ipswich Town.

Crysencio Summerville stepped up to the mark once more for Farke's promotion chasers in the game against Michael Carrick's challengers, uncharacteristically scoring with his head to make it 2-1 after only seven minutes of high-intensity action.

Crysencio Summerville's game in numbers vs Boro

Leeds' star Dutch winger was integral to how his side ventured forward throughout the game, minus just his early header finding the back of the opposing goal.

Summerville was a thorn in the side for the visitors all afternoon, relentless with his ascents forward that frequently unnerved and unsettled a Boro backline that just couldn't keep Leeds' dynamic number ten under wraps.

Amassing five key passes in the game as per Sofascore, on top of three successful dribble attempts bamboozling a shaky backline time after time, the breakthrough gem of this second-tier season to date for Leeds was excellent once again.

Summerville also rolled up his sleeves when his team needed him to be more switched on late into the back-and-forth contest, winning seven ground duels in the game whilst also launching himself into three tackles from the wing.

The Leeds supporters watching on would also have been enthralled by the display of Ethan Ampadu in defensive midfield, the former Chelsea man a calm orchestrator of attacking moves against Boro alongside winning his fair share of duels.

Ethan Ampadu's game in numbers vs Boro

Ampadu barely put a foot wrong all match against the visitors from Teesside.

The Welshman was accurate with 58 of his 60 passes at Elland Road, a 97% success rate, Ampadu clearly full of confidence for his new employers.

Given the nature of the match, the ex-Chelsea youth product could well have offered more protection in this high-octane setting but it finally looks as though he's found a fixed home in Leeds – settled in west Yorkshire after various loans away from the Blues saw him become a fringe figure at Stamford Bridge.

Now, he's one of the first names on the team sheet at Leeds under Farke's management. Managing two key passes in the contest, Ampadu just couldn't quite add another assist to his season tally with a defensive-splitting ball never quite catching Carrick's men napping.

Ampadu was also resilient in defence in the second 45 minutes, ensuring that a susceptible Leeds defence wasn't breached again – winning five of his eight duels on the day, with the lofty midfielder 100% successful when it came to the aerial battles.

Leeds midfielder Ethan Ampadu.

Ever present under Farke this season – not missing a single minute of action in all competitions under his new German boss – Leeds' £7m signing will just keep plugging away in midfield for his side this campaign and hope that his contributions are worthy of helping the Whites return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Weak opposition, weather factor put India's warm-up under a cloud

The first day of India’s four-day non-first-class fixture against CA XI is expected to receive plenty of rain, and the second is not clear either

India begin their only tour game before the Test series in Australia on Wednesday, but they do so in a manner similar to the one in England despite efforts to do it otherwise. They will play a non-first-class fixture against a weak side in a game that might not see more than three days’ play.In England, India had asked their only four-day match to be reduced to three days, a game in which every player of the squad played, ridding it of its competitive nature. In Australia, the BCCI seemed to have pulled off a modern coup of sorts, getting a tour game at a venue that will be hosting a Test later, the Sydney Cricket Ground. A further breakthrough was made when they got Cricket Australia to accommodate a late request to turn the three-day fixture into a four-day one, raising the possibility that India might buck the trend and play a proper first-class game.A day before the match, though, India announced this would not be a first-class fixture. That means everybody in the squad will get to bat and bowl with only 11 on the field at a given time. To choose between such a game and a proper first-class fixture has of late been the dilemma with tours – especially India’s – having time only for one warm-up match before the series begins. One school of thought is to decide your best XI in advance, and go hard to win a competitive match. Former Australia captain Ian Chappell, among others, is a fan of this approach. He wrote for ESPNcricinfo last weekend: “Many sides touring Australia have failed to observe the rule that should be etched on their boarding pass: try to win every game, especially those leading up to the first Test. The last touring side that obeyed that principle was Andrew Strauss’ England side in 2010-11. Their enterprise in the warm-up matches was an influencing factor in an eventual 3-1 Test series victory.”However, it is understandable that when you have only one game, you want to give some time in the middle to every batsman and bowler before you zero in on your best XI for the Test. India can’t be assessed harshly for taking this route. It is possible the wretched forecast for Sydney had some influence on this call. The first day of this match is expected to receive plenty of rain, and the second is not clear either. So if you are likely to get only three days of play, does it make sense to play it as a four-day competitive fixture?India captain Virat Kohli’s main grouse with warm-up fixtures is likely to stay. Even in England, he defended his decision to not play competitive tour games by saying it was rare to get an opposition that prepares you for a Test match. “A lot of people talk about tour games but where are those tour games happening and against what quality of bowling are very important questions to be asked,” Kohli had told Sky TV in England. “Because if you don’t get the preparation you need before a Test series, then it is actually not utilised well. Time is not utilised well if you don’t get the quality of opposition that you will face in Test cricket.”India’s opposition in this SCG match is a CA XI side, with only eight of those players having played first-class cricket. D’Arcy Short is the only one with international experience, but he is seen as a T20 specialist. Most of the players in Australia are busy playing the concurrent round of Shield cricket.Five Test specialists have had a better shot at acclimatisation. They reached Sydney early to train with Sanjay Bangar, India’s assistant coach. Ajinkya Rahane, M Vijay, Parthiv Patel, Prthivi Shaw and Hanuma Vihari have been working at the SCG from November 22. From among the T20 specialists, offspinner Washington Sundar will stay back till November 29 as a net bowler to help the Test batsmen prepare. From whatever time India get in the middle, they will look to sort out their best combination. They have to decide between the three openers on tour – M Vijay, KL Rahul and Prithvi Shaw – and also need to decide whether they want an extra batsman or a spin-bowling allrounder in Hardik Pandya’s absence. If India do play an extra batsman, they have to pick between Rohit Sharma and Hanuma Vihari. R Ashwin should start as the lead spinner, but Kuldeep Yadav’s wristspin will always be part of the conversation.CA XI: Sam Whiteman (capt), Max Bryant, Jake Carder, Jackson Coleman, Harry Conway, Daniel Fallins, David Grant, Aaron Hardie, Jonathan Merlo, Harry Nielsen (wk), D’Arcy Short, Param Uppal

Arsenal preparing to trigger £50m+ release clause to sign Goncalo Inacio

As Arsenal go in pursuit of the Premier League title yet again following the heartbreak of last season, the January transfer window could prove to be crucial. The Gunners missed out on the all-important silverware by a matter of points, despite leading the way over Manchester City for the majority of the campaign. It is the type of fall-off that Mikel Arteta will be hoping to avoid this time around.

As things stand, after defeating Brighton & Hove Albion 2-0 on Sunday, those at The Emirates remain on course to be among those still vying to lift the title come May. And one potential January arrival could hand Arsenal a major advantage over the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City.

Goncalo Inacio transfer update

Arsenal didn't just rest on their laurels during the summer transfer window, settling for a place in the Premier League's top four. Instead, they went after improvements, welcoming the likes of Declan Rice, Kai Havertz and David Raya, who have all gradually become important parts of Arteta's side. The January window could yet see Arsenal repeat their transfer trick too, in an attempt to gain an advantage in the title race and beat rivals to one particular star signing.

lucas-beraldo-goncalo-inacio-liverpool-opinion

According to reports in Spain, Arsenal are ready to trigger the release clause of Goncalo Inacio in the January transfer window, which stands at €60m (£52m). The North London side could face competition from Liverpool, however, who have also been linked with a move for the Sporting Club defender.

With both sides competing for the Premier League crown, Inacio's decision could make all the difference. If Arteta does manage to welcome the defender next month, then he could have the ideal depth in central defence, with Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba keeping hold of the starting spots, potentially competing with Inacio.

"Excellent" Inacio could decide title

Not only could Arsenal be potentially denying Liverpool a vital arrival, but they'd also be significantly strengthening their own side. Away from Gabriel and Saliba, Arteta's backup central options remain Jakub Kiwior and Ben White, who often finds himself at right-back. It is a drop-off in quality that could see the Gunners struggle if either Gabriel or Saliba suffered injuries in busy periods. Signing Inacio would help them to avoid that problem, however. Here's how Inacio's stats compare to Gabriel and Saliba.

It's no surprise, given the numbers, that Inacio has been at the centre of praise, including from Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig. Kulig posted on X:

"14 goals & 8 assists in 143 games. G/A is not his main job of course, but Gonçalo Inácio's numbers are really good. And above all, he is an excellent central defender. 22 years of age. Alcochete's Finest."

As January approaches, it certainly looks as though the Sporting defender is one to keep an eye on, with Arsenal reportedly ready to launch a move in the winter transfer window.

Rahul, Rahane fail but bowlers help India A take unassailable lead

Deepak Chahar top scored for India A with 39 and took the crucial wicket of Sam Billings as India A defended 172

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Jan-2019

It began poorly for India A, losing their captain Ajinkya Rahane first ball after opting to bat, but having scraped through to 172 despite no fifties, the bowlers did a fine job in defending it by 60 runs, and gave the home team an unassailable three-nil lead against England Lions. KL Rahul failed to impress on his return to action, as he was dismissed for a 25-ball 13, one of seven India-A batsmen to make double figures.Ishan Kishan and Krunal Pandya stitched together the highest partnership of the innings to take India A from 53 for four to 94 before the latter fell for a 23-ball 21. Kishan struck a more patient 63-ball 30 and was the seventh wicket to fall with the score on 110. However, a cameo of 39 from Deepak Chahar that included four sixes, and was the joint-highest score for the match, ensured that they a had a total to work with.Axar Patel did the early damage with the ball, reducing the Lions to 13 for two with the wickets of openers Alex Davies and Will Jacks, and soon Chahar removed Sam Billings to make it 23 for three. Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope were the only ones to offer a semblance of resistance with a 47-run fourth-wicket stand, but once Navdeep Saini had Pope caught behind for 27, another collapse ensued. The crucial scalp of Duckett was taken by Pandya for 39, as he ran through the lower order, picking four for 21. The Lions were bundled out for 112 in the 31st over.
