Tom Curran points Surrey towards the title

Tom Curran wasted no time in confirming Surrey as Championship favourites as he took five wickets on his first appearance of the season

Ben Slater and Kraigg Brathwaite put on 41 for Notts’ first wicket second time around, before Conor McKerr had Slater caught behind for 21, and there was more resistance until off spinner Amar Virdi, introduced just before bad light brought a premature end to the day, seven overs early, had Jake Libby leg-before for 17. Brathwaite is 39 not out.Tom Moores, with 29, was the top-scorer after Curransent back Slater (9), Brathwaite (2) and Libby (12) in quick succession, while Morne Morkel had Samit Patel leg-before for 5.Slater was caught behind, Brathwaite leg-before and Libby held at third slip, driving, and Notts were 39 for 5 when McKerr, replacing Morkel at the Vauxhall End, struck in his first over to have Billy Root caught at the wicket by Ben Foakes for 6.McKerr then saw Riki Wessels (12) slice to point to make it 70 for 6, and just before tea Luke Wood was caught behind for 8 in Morkel’s second spell to complete a miserable afternoon session for the visitors.Moores had just extra cover driven McKerr for a flamboyant boundary when, two balls later, he aimed another big drive to a ball outside his off stump and edged to Foakes, who then took his fifth catch of the innings when Luke Fletcher nicked a drive at the returning Curran. Two balls later, Harry Gurney’s stumps were shattered by Curran and Notts’ last three wickets had gone in seven balls.Earlier Mark Stoneman’s 22nd first-class hundred helped Surrey to four batting bonus points as they made good progress from their overnight 256 for 6. Opener Stoneman, who resumed on 99 not out, soon reached three figures and was eventually ninth out for 144 having batted for more than seven hours and faced 260 balls, hitting 18 fours.Last wicket pair McKerr and Virdi completed the task of getting Surrey past the 350-mark with a frisky stand of 35 after Stoneman, looking to cut a ball a little too near him for the shot, edged Wood’s left-arm swingers to keeper Moores. At the start of the day, Stoneman and Curran had taken their seventh wicket partnership to 84 in 22 overs before Curran, who hit some sparkling offside shots in a 69-ball 43 which included five fours, top-edged a hook at Matt Milnes to Root at long leg. The short ball also accounted for Morkel, who skied a flappy pull at Gurney to Milnes at long leg to go for 5.McKerr finished 19 not out and, immediately after hitting Patel’s left-arm spin for six over long on to reach 19, No 11 Virdi was bowled heaving at the next ball.

Ange’s transfer plan for January shared amid key Spurs injury blow

Ange Postecoglou wants to add a fresh face to one key area of the Tottenham squad as the January transfer window approaches, coming amid some real injury concerns.

Van de Ven and Maddison injuries

Spurs suffered their first defeat of the Premier League campaign on Monday with a 4-1 loss at home to Mauricio Pochettino's Chelsea. The encounter has pretty much everything a neutral could hope for; sending offs, VAR controversy, goals galore and a bold move by Tottenham to maintain a high line despite being down to nine men in the second half.

In what was, arguably, the division's most entertaining encounter of 2023/2024 so far. However, it was an evening that spelt horror for Postecoglou, who lost a quartet of star players in Destiny Udogie, Cristian Romero, James Maddison and Micky van de Ven.

Udogie and Romero will now sit out temporarily through suspension, while Maddison and van de Ven could be sidelined for the foreseeable through injury. The extent of Maddison's problem hasn't been officially confirmed yet, but van de Ven may be set to miss a fair chunk of games. Postecoglou, speaking after his side's loss to Chelsea, has described the Dutch defender's injury as a "significant" one.

The 22-year-old pulled up clutching his hamstring and could barely leave the pitch without assistance.

"It's too early but looking at Micky you're thinking it's a pretty significant one so you'd assume he'll be out for a little while." said Postecoglou on Maddison and van de Ven.

"Madders got a knock on the ankle and we'll just have to assess him and see how it is."

Spurs have started the new campaign with real aplomb as Postecoglou cements himself as a real fan favourite; winning eight out of their opening 11 top-flight encounters while remaining unbeaten until their last game. If Tottenham wish to maintain their excellent early-season form, the January transfer market comes as a solution to plug gaping holes in Postecoglou's squad.

Postecoglou "keen" to bolster key area

Writing for Football Insider, journalist Pete O'Rourke has shared the Tottenham manager's plans for the winter window. It is believed Postecoglou is "keen" to bolster his centre-back options in particular, amid van de Ven's injury blow.

This comes after the Australian previously hinted at activity in the new year, explaining that the mid-season window will be an "important" one for Spurs.

Micky van de Ven

"It is important they come in now. The January window, like for every club, is an important one," said Postecoglou on January transfers.

"My view on the January one is that if you can get your business done early in the window it certainly is more helpful because you leave it until the end of January and sometimes what you train to gain you've missed that opportunity by waiting a whole month.

"That's sometimes out of your control so having Johan in is good. I'm sure we'll have a lot of discussions between now and then and I'm looking forward to working with him."

In terms of rumoured names, it's been claimed that Spurs are eyeing Fulham's Tosin Adarabioyo, with Tottenham also targeting Lloyd Kelly of Bournemouth.

O jornal El Heraldo onde eu trabalhava me mandou para lá. Contra o Uruguai, aquele drible no goleiro, Pelé abre a perna e deixa ela passar. A bola vai pra fora. Eu tirei essa foto, mas na foto que eu tirei foi gol – contou Villagrán ao site GE.com

“Set for scan…” – James Hunter delivers concerning Sunderland injury update

A "fantastic" Sunderland player could be set for a spell out of the team after picking up an injury, according to an update from reliable journalist James Hunter.

Impressive Sunderland beat Birmingham

The Black Cats were back in Championship action on Saturday lunchtime, as they took on Wayne Rooney's Birmingham City at the Stadium of Light. It has been a good start to the season for Tony Mowbray's men and that continued against their Midlands opponents, as the hosts strode to a 3-1 victory.

Jobe Bellingham's opener set Sunderland on their way to a routine three points, and even though they were pegged back before half-time, an own goal from Dion Sanderson was then added to by a close-range effort from Adil Aouchiche, as Mowbray's side ran out comfortable winners in the end.

The victory means that Sunderland have snuck into the playoff positions by virtue of West Brom losing 2-1 away to Southampton later in the day, with the Black Cats sixth in the table and once again looking like they could be genuine promotion contenders in 2023/24.

While there is plenty to be positive about at the moment, an injury concern has emerged after the weekend triumph – one that could leave supporters worried.

Dennis Cirkin injury blow

Taking to X after Saturday's win over Birmingham, Hunter confirmed that Sunderland ace Dennis Cirkin is "set for a scan" to find out the severity of the injury he suffered in the warm-up, ruling him out of the game. Mowbray also provided a similar update in his post-match press conference, saying:

Sunderland left-back Dennis Cirkin.

"Ultimately, it was his hamstring. He trained yesterday and said he felt it after training, but then woke up this morning and said he felt fine, good. We pushed on and then in the warm-up he said he could feel it and didn't want to risk it. He'll go for a scan tomorrow and we'll see what it is."

The hope is that Cirkin's injury setback is not a serious one, but hamstring issues can be awkward ones to overcome, with even a slight tweak potentially taking a few weeks to heal.

While not necessarily a guaranteed starter so far this season, the 21-year-old has still been an important squad player, with Cirkin's statistics highlighting that he has made eight Championship appearances to date, averaging 1.3 tackles per game and registering one assist in that time.

In the past, former Sunderland manager Lee Johnson has lauded the youngster as a "fantastic" player who could have a "top career" ahead of him, and he is going to be a key figure in the Black Cats' promotion push.

Squad depth is something that is so vital for any team with aspirations of making it into the Premier League, and Cirkin is the type of player that can be invaluable in that respect, not always starting but proving to be a strong option in defence, whether that be in a central or left-sided role.

Rahul Johri not to attend ICC meeting – sources

The decision is believed to have been taken after #MeToo allegations against the BCCI’s CEO

Sharda Ugra14-Oct-2018

SLC

BCCI secretary Amitabh Chaudhary is expected to represent the board at the ICC’s chief executives’ meeting to be held in Singapore this week, a task that would normally have fallen to its CEO Rahul Johri. The decision follows #MeToo allegations, made public on Friday, around Johri’s conduct with a fellow professional in his previous job.The BCCI’s first response to the anonymous allegations of Johri’s alleged conduct against a woman ex-colleague in the television industry, before he joined the BCCI, had been to seek an “explanation” from Johri within a week. There was no word on whether the allegations would affect Johri’s daily operations inside the BCCI or indeed his presence as the Indian board’s representative at the Singapore meeting on October 17 and 18. It is believed that protests from within the board, the two-member Committee of Administrators (CoA), as well as reservations expressed at the highest level of the ICC went ahead to ensure that Johri would not be be a part of the CEOs meeting in Singapore. The possibility of Johri turning up at the meeting in Singapore had made the situation “very uncomfortable”, according to a cricket official. The allegations against Johri, made anonymously through Twitter, are part of a vitally transformed global environment around issues of sexual harassment, abuse and crimes against women. The BCCI’s own internal complaints committee against workplace harassment has only been in place since April 2018. The committee is headed by BCCI lawyer Karina Kripalani, GM Operations Saba Karim, Rupawati Rao, who works in BCCI accounts, and external member Mumbai-based women’s rights lawyer Veena Gowda. This is the third time within 18 months that the BCCI, and through them the CoA, have been faced with complaints, accusations and allegations of sexual harassment around its senior executives. Johri’s name has featured in them, but it is not yet certain if two complaints were indeed the same one, only with more details. Given the nature of the allegations against the CEO of the most high-profile and richest sporting body in India and the richest board in world cricket, the complaints committee could be dealing with their biggest and most scrutinised case yet.

Ben Foakes 'very much in England's thinking' for first Test

With wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow ruled out, Trevor Bayliss admitted England have yet to decide on their team for the Galle Test

George Dobell in Galle04-Nov-2018Head coach Trevor Bayliss has admitted England have “some thinking to do” before deciding on their team for the Galle Test. With Jonny Bairstow now confirmed as an absentee for the first Test, which starts on Tuesday, England still have to decide who will keep wicket, who will bat at No. 3 and on the balance of their side. They arrived at the ground on Sunday and were surprised to find just a little moisture in a pitch that otherwise looked pretty good for batting. With heavy rain again curtailing training, the ground was covered raising the prospect that the surface may not dry out as much as was previously expected. As a result, England are hesitating before confirming the selection of all three spin bowlers on a pitch that usually provides copious assistance for such bowlers.”We’ve got a bit of thinking to do,” Bayliss told Talksport. “We’re not committing to an absolute 11 at this very moment. We’d be silly to do that in these weather conditions.”The pitch has a little moisture in it at the moment but there’s still two days to go. If the covers are down for a little while it might hold some of that moisture but I still expect it to dry out and spin as the game goes on.”It’s a harder selection from the point of view that we’re not discussing one position. We’re discussing three or four positions. So it’s very hard.”With Bairstow ruled out of this game – but back in training and understood to have a good chance of returning for the second Test – Bayliss confirmed that either Jos Buttler or Ben Foakes will keep. While Foakes has yet to play international cricket, he is the higher-rated keeper, with Buttler admitting towards the end of the limited-overs series that he had not been satisfied with the level of his own keeping in recent times.”I think Jos would be the first to agree he’s kept better at different times,” Bayliss said. “We know he is a good keeper but sometimes here, on these different wickets, it doesn’t come through quite so well and it shows up a little bit of footwork. But he’s been in the nets and working very hard over the last week or so and gloved them pretty well in the practice game.”Buttler and Foakes are both still very much in our thinking. Definitely one of them will be keeping but how we structure the batting order and what combination of bowlers we put in to the team could determine who eventually gets the gloves.”We’ve got to pick a team we think can take 20 wickets on some of these pitches in Sri Lanka.”Among the options to be considered by Bayliss and Joe Root – Ed Smith is in Galle but does not select the final XI – is playing either Moeen Ali or Ben Stokes at No. 3. But there are concerns that their workload as bowlers could prove too onerous. As a result it remains possible England could also play Sam Curran and Chris Woakes among an allrounder-studded line-up that includes four seamers and three spinners. In that eventuality, Buttler would have to keep and bat No. 6.”Yes, that’s been one of the discussion points,” Bayliss said. “Moeen batted at No. 3 in the last Test at home. But his bowling workload is a concern if we want him to bat at three. How will he handle bowling maybe 40-plus overs in an innings?”It might give the allrounders a break [if we played seven bowlers]. Ben Stokes, for example, is in the team because he bats. It’s a bonus that he bowls. It’s a little bit the same with Moeen, too, even though he probably bowls a little more. It just allows us the opportunity to put in the extra bowler or an extra batter when we want to, depending on the conditions. And if we do go with three spinners we’ve got right arm offspin, left-arm orthodox and legspin. We’ve got all bases covered.”But we certainly haven’t finalised an XI yet. We want a final look at the wicket over the next 24 hours. I think we’re getting closer but I think we’d be silly to make a decision now two days out.”1800 GMT – This story was updated with embargoed quotes
