Making the best of it: the Championship in April

Not much to tell at Grace Road. And that is a common theme of a Championship shoved to the margins of the season

ScorecardPaul Horton and Colin Ackermann hit brisk half-centuries for Leicestershire after play finally got underway in their Specsavers County Championship match against Derbyshire at the Fischer County Ground. After two days when constant heavy rain rendered the Grace Road outfield unplayable, improved conditions and much hard work on the part of the groundstaff, enabled the game to start shortly after lunch, with Derbyshire captain Billy Godleman exercising the away team’s prerogative to bowl first. The pitch looked a good one, however, and despite having been under covers for such a long period, offered the Derbyshire seamers little assistance. Nor was there much swing to be had in the cold conditions, and Horton and fellow opener Michael Carberry took full toll of some wayward bowling.Carberry hit three fours and a six in one Ravi Rampaul over, and looked set for his first half-century for Leicestershire when he edged an attempted drive at a Luis Reece delivery straight to Wayne Madsen at first slip.Horton made no mistake however, going to his 50 off 69 balls as Leicestershire continued to score at close to five runs an over, before being dismissed in the same manner as Carberry, edging a offside drive at Reece to Madsen at first slip.Mark Cosgrove handed Reece his third wicket, clipping the left-arm seamer straight to Ben Slater at midwicket, but Ackermann picked up where he left off in scoring 186 against Sussex last week, hitting six fours and a six in going to 50 off just 67 balls before going back to a Matt Critchley leg-spinner which hurried on and hit the top of his off stump.Lewis Hill came and went quickly, edging a lovely out-swinger from Will Davis to wicket-keeper Gary Wilson, but having passed 250 and picked up a second batting bonus point, Ned Eckersley and Neil Dexter allowed the scoring rate to fall markedly – a decision they may regret if, as the weather forecast suggests could be the case, rain prevents any further play in the match.

Ball's England form leaves Worcestershire bereft

Worcestershire’s batsmen are heading to the 2nd XI for recuperation after a third successive defeat extended a dismal return to Division One

Paul Bolton at New Road30-Apr-2018
ScorecardIt is only seven months these sides were promoted together from Division Two of the County Championship but the gulf in class between them was startling in a one-sided affair that was completed in just five sessions.Worcestershire, who went up as Second Division champions, were routed twice in the equivalent of just two sessions by a high quality attack who made expert use of a slow seaming pitch.Stuart Broad, playing his first match of the season, played his part, surviving a mid-pitch collision with Luke Fletcher along the way, but he was not Worcestershire’s chief tormentor. Instead it was Jake Ball, another member of England’s Ashes attack, who wrecked their second innings by taking his second five wicket haul of the season.Worcestershire have now lost all three matches since they were promoted for the sixth time and with a trip to the Oval this week followed by the visit of reigning champions Essex, things are unlikely to get any easier.Kevin Sharp, who was installed as head coach following the sacking of Steve Rhodes during the winter, had some difficult times during his time as Yorkshire’s batting coach but preventing Worcestershire from being relegated after just a season in the top flight for the fifth time may yet prove to be his biggest challenge.”We know that there are some really top sides in this division. Division One sides are more experienced and they have strength in depth but there lies the challenge. If we didn’t know before we certainly do now about what is expected,” Sharp said. After a lengthy post-match team Sharp announced that five of his punch drunk top six – Travis Head is the exception – will play in a Second XI Trophy match against Warwickshire at New Road on Tuesday in an attempt to find form and confidence..Brett D’Oliveira and George Rhodes have scraped together just 35 runs in 12 innings between them and Worcestershire’s only half centuries have come from Ben Cox and Ed Barnard at seven and eight in the order.”It hurts and it’s not nice. Someone asked me the other day if I was enjoying myself. I said sometimes because it’s not easy to enjoy yourself in such circumstances,” Sharp said.”I have been at this club for four years, I have seen these lads grow up and they are fine players but they have not performed as yet. But I have every confidence and belief they will come through and by September things will have turned round.”Jake Ball showed England form at New Road•Getty Images

Nottinghamshire have yet to play at Trent Bridge this season because of building work but they will return there to face Hampshire on Friday having won twice on the road.”We started this little block of five matches thinking of it like a Test series of five. We are 2-1 up at the minute and everyone is excited at going back to Trent Bridge,” Ball said.Ball already 21 wickets this season and with a new National Selector in Ed Smith, he remains hopeful of reclaiming his England place after he was dropped for the two Tests in New Zealand.”It’s nice to have had this start having had the winter I had. It’s something I wanted to do. Hopefully I can kick on again and see where we go from there,” he said.Ball was given the opportunity to pitch the ball up and attack here thanks to the early aggression of Tom Moores and Broad who accelerated Nottinghamshire towards their declaration. They pulled out after the last wicket pair of Luke Fletcher and Harry Gurney had scrambled the 12 runs they needed for a third batting point and then set about Worcestershire’s feeble batting.Daryl Mitchell, who has made only five of his 26 championship centuries in the First Division, was bowled by a full length ball for the second time in the match and only Tom Fell, who batted 28 overs for his 37, threatened to delay Nottinghamshire.Fell looked distraught when he was bowled shouldering arms to Gurney and Worcestershire’s version of Kwik Cricket meant it was all over long before a party of 150 schoolchildren arrived hoping to see some cricket before a presentation evening.

Spurs: "Phenomenal" player now "at odds with Tottenham", he’s trying to go

It has been reported that a "phenomenal" Tottenham Hotspur player is now "at odds" with the club, and he is currently working to leave.

What's the latest Spurs transfer news?

Despite the signings of goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, young centre-back Ashley Phillips, assured defender Micky van de Ven, England midfield star James Maddison, winger Manor Solomon, exciting striker Alejo Veliz and Wales forward Brennan Johnson over the summer transfer window, Lilywhites bosses apparently have their eyes on January.

Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou has seriously impressed over his first six Premier League matches as manager, with his side currently boasting an early-season unbeaten streak. Indeed, the north Londoners have won four out of their opening six league games and stand out as one of the division's highest-scoring sides. Next up, Tottenham battle fellow high-flyers Liverpool on home turf tomorrow – a match which is shaping up to be a very interesting encounter.

However, their success on the field could well be hampered by potential injuries to star players. A scare surrounding Maddison this week highlights this in particular, and you could argue there are few options behind fellow summer signing van de Ven if the defender were to be sidelined. Potentially as a result, chairman Daniel Levy and new Chief Football Officer Scott Munn are reportedly considering targets for the winter window.

The likes of Gleison Bremer (Juventus) and Lloyd Kelly (Bournemouth) have been mooted as targets by the press, while Spurs could also allegedly move for Brentford star Ivan Toney.

Who could leave Tottenham?

To make room for these potential new additions, it is believed that a fair few fringe squad members may well depart. The likes of Giovani Lo Celso and Ivan Perisic, despite their injury woes, are being tipped to leave when the transfer window reopens for business.

Eric Dier, who is yet to play a single minute for Postecoglou this season, is another who could make way as there have been reports of serious interest from Roma. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, regardless of his status as a real mainstay under Antonio Conte last season, is another apparently eyeing the exit door.

The Dane has struggled for regular starting places under Postecoglou, as he doesn't quite fit in to the Australian's new-look system, with Calciomercato providing an update on his future.

According to the Italian news outlet, Hojbjerg is "at odds with Tottenham", with both the player and his agents putting feelers out to various clubs across Europe. This would allow the midfielder to "say goodbye" to Tottenham, and Juventus are named as a possible destination for him.

However, due to their financial problems, they cannot afford Spurs' £26 million asking price. They are hopeful that a loan can be negotiated through representatives, as Juve won't be able to afford a permanent deal unless "excellent sales" are made – according to the report.

Hojbjerg stood out as one of Spurs' best-performing players per 90 last season, according to WhoScored. The 28-year-old also bagged four goals and five assists in that time, with Jose Mourinho previously calling him a "phenomenal player".

Nick Gubbins, Dawid Malan and Eoin Morgan in runs for Middlesex

Nick Gubbins, touted as an opener for England’s first Test of the summer against Pakistan, gave a wonderful audition for the role with an innings of 99

Nick Gubbins again advertised his England credentials

ScorecardMiddlesex’s England stars of present and possibly near future dominated day one of their Specsavers County Championship match with Gloucestershire at Lord’s.Nick Gubbins, touted as an opener for England’s first Test of the summer against Pakistan later this month, gave a wonderful audition for the role, before falling one short of a deserved century. Skipper Dawid Malan, a current red-ball incumbent for the national side, and England’s white-ball captain Eoin Morgan weighed in with 76 apiece – the latter in his first County Championship appearance in almost three years. The persevering Daniel Worrall was Gloucester’s standout bowler with 3 for 59, as Middlesex passed 300 in the first innings for the first time in 13 matches.Gubbins wasted no time making Gloucestershire regret their decision to forego the toss and bowl. He survived a couple of early scares, the first when wicketkeeper Gareth Roderick dropped him down the leg side off the bowling of Worrall when on just 17. The second shortly after saw him almost run out by a direct hit from Graham van Buuren, the ball ricocheting to the boundary for a rare 5.Gubbins’ cover-drives were a joy to behold and the opener was also quick to savagely cut anything short and wide. Sam Robson, perhaps fortunate to retain his place at the expense of Max Holden, by contrast looked edgy early on but found some batting rhythm particularly with some punchy drives through midwicket. The pair added 77 before the excellent Worrall squared up Robson who edged a low catch to Roderick. Gubbins though carried on unperturbed, hitting 10 boundaries in reaching 50 off 73 balls.Nick Gubbins works the ball away•Getty Images

Stevie Eskinazi proved a good foil either side of lunch before playing a poor shot to a wide one from Worrall, which Kieran Noema-Barnett palmed upwards before claiming at the second attempt. It was the beginning of an excellent spell from Australian quick Worrall who ended Gubbins’ hopes of back-to-back Championship centuries when the left-hander gloved a rising delivery to give Roderick a second catch behind the stumps.Sadly, for the visitors, none of Worrall’s team-mates found the same life or bowled with the same control, meaning Malan and Morgan wrestled back the initiative with a century stand. Malan, buoyed by last week’s century against Sussex, was the early aggressor with some stylish off drives, but Morgan caught the mood, hoisting van Buuren for a straight six.Such was the duo’s dominance it was a shock when Malan fell to the second new ball, trapped lbw by Matthew Taylor to a delivery which pitched and rolled along the floor – surely ominous for Gloucestershire whose earlier decision to bowl means they must bat last.Taylor soon struck again when new batsman Hilton Cartwright wafted a catch to slip and departed without scoring, and Morgan fell lbw just before the close to another ball which kept low from former Middlesex allrounder Ryan Higgins.

Jarrad Branthwaite news: Everton’s "terrific" talent wanted by Man Utd

Everton could be set to lose one of their top young assets in January alongside Amadou Onana, with the pair reportedly being targeted by a rival in the Premier League.

Who are Everton linked with?

Over the summer, Sean Dyche’s side recruited five fresh faces in the form of Beto, Youssef Chermiti and Ashley Young on a permanent basis, whilst Arnaut Danjuma and Jack Harrison put pen to paper on season-long loans for the remainder of the campaign.

With that window having closed, the Toffees are assessing their options ahead of the next one opening, and have been linked with moves for Al-Ittihad winger Jota and Paris Saint-Germain striker Hugo Ekitike, alongside a double swoop for Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips and Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, as per reports from Spain.

The Goodison Park side are also focused on securing the long-term services of one of their current players in Jarrad Branthwaite, who was the subject of a surprise enquiry from Manchester United before the previous transfer deadline, and the centre-back attracting interest has prompted chiefs to take action.

Football Insider recently reported that the Merseyside outfit have opened discussions with the 21-year-old regarding a new contract, but should a more high-profile club come calling, it may be hard for England’s youth international to turn down an exciting opportunity like completing a switch to Old Trafford.

Is Jarrad Branthwaite leaving Everton?

According to The Daily Mail, Man United are eyeing Amadou Onana, but have also earmarked Branthwaite once again as an ideal target for January after Lisandro Martinez suffered a long-term injury: “Even if Martinez returns before the end of the year, United could be in the market for a new centre-back in the January transfer window – with Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite one of the names on their radar.

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite.

How good is Jarrad Branthwaite?

Standing at 6 foot 5, Branthwaite provides an excellent physical presence at the heart of Everton’s backline, which he’s proven so far this season by averaging 3.8 clearances and 3.2 aerial wins per top-flight game, via WhoScored.

He ranks poorly in most ball playing based metrics, which does perhaps ask questions about his ability to transition his form to a club who dominate the ball, but he sits in the 70th percentile or above for each of tackles, interceptions and aerials won, showing his physical dominance and smart reading of the game (FBRef).

Dyche’s left-footed ace is even capable of making a positive impact at the opposite end of the pitch having clocked up nine contributions (seven goals and two assists) in 89 appearances since the start of his career which has seen him labelled a “terrific footballer” by his former manager Steven Pressley.

United have been heavily linked with a move for Onana having made an approach for him over the summer, and whilst a deal for him failed to come to fruition, Erik ten Hag appears to have instead set his sights on his teammate in Branthwaite, who pockets £15k-per-week at Goodison Park.
