Liverpool Plot Move For “Unbelievable” £77m Star

So far, Liverpool’s midfield rebuild is taking a wondrous shape.

The club has completed the signing of Alexis Mac Allister, who is seen as a dual replacement for Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Whilst Dominik Szoboszlai is finally the attacking threat that mirrors Philippe Coutinho’s midfield creativity, whilst also possessing the attributes to play on the wing.

The Reds are also been heavily linked with Southampton’s Romeo Lavia, as the youngster operates from a deep-lying, defensive pivot berth and would be projected to take over from Fabinho in the future.

The next player tipped to be the latest part of this extraordinary revamp is Federico Valverde.

What’s the latest on Federico Valverde to Liverpool?

According to reports in Spain, the 24-year-old was tempted to depart Los Blancos last summer and Jurgen Klopp became 'obsessed' with this addition and did 'everything possible' to get the deal over the line, even tabling an offer of €80 (£77m).

However, that was never considered by Florentino Perez and was immediately rejected, without even the possibility to negotiate.

The player himself also shunned the move, stating that he didn’t want to leave the Santiago Bernabeu and was “comfortable with life” in the Spanish capital.

Nevertheless, 12 months later, a very different backdrop has reportedly formed as Liverpool is 'convinced' that a move could materialise.

Klopp firmly believes that the Uruguayan would 'fit perfectly' into his style of play and has tipped him to become the star of the team, alongside Mohamed Salah.

Therefore, the six-time European Champions are supposedly readying a new and improved bid to retest the waters.

Why would Federico Valverde be a good signing for Liverpool?

The 49-cap international made a mammoth 56 appearances in all competitions last season, recording 19 goal contributions.

He has established himself as one of Carlo Ancelotti’s most popular, trusted, and influential assets, proving to be an offensive threat and a formidable athlete. This is portrayed by his rank within the top 9% in Europe’s top five leagues among his positional peers for progressive carries per 90, total shots per 90, and non-penalty goals per 90.

Chelsea legend Joe Cole feels that Valverde is an elite footballer and said: “He's standing right at the top of the tree with Bellingham in the young players, and he's on the verge of becoming the best.

“He's box-to-box, he scores goals, he's a technician.

“His stats this year are unbelievable, his goals, assists, goal involvements, incredible player and we talk a lot about Bellingham in this country, but this kid is every bit as good as Bellingham.”

The pundit also highlighted the South American as the “unsung hero” of the 2022 Champions League final, in which he provided the tournament-winning assist for Vinicius Jr against Klopp's side.

Valverde possesses an expertly curated profile that is capable of succeeding Jordan Henderson in the future. The 33-year-old skipper has been at Anfield since 2011 and has appeared on a mind-boggling 492 occasions for the Merseyside outfit.

Jordan Henderson plays for Liverpool in their Premier League clash against Nottingham Forest.

Nevertheless, the Englishman is slowly declining, as in the 2021/22 season in the top flight he averaged more tackles (1.0 vs 0.9), interceptions (0.7 vs 0.6), key passes (1.1 vs 0.9) per game than in the most recent campaign, as his dynamism and energy are beginning to dwindle.

Whilst Henderson undoubtedly remains an essential component of the dressing room, it would be smart to gradually reduce his involvement in the side and pave the way for the dazzlingly exciting Valverde.

PSG Former Director Tells Kylian Mbappe To Leave

The Kylian Mbappe transfer saga would rival the Kardashians for reality TV in another life, such are the number of twists and turns that occur every time the transfer window swings open.

As things stand, the Paris Saint-Germain star is set to leave the club on a free next summer upon the expiration of his contract. The Ligue 1 champions are keen to avoid that scenario, however, standing firm on their decision that either Mbappe signs a new deal or he leaves this summer, club President Nasser Al-Khelaifi recently reiterated.

The issue seems to be that the Frenchman wants to stay at the club for another season, and with the knowledge that he will be a free agent this time next year, the likes of Real Madrid are reportedly willing to wait 12 months to get a deal done.

Al-Khelaifi recently spoke on the situation, saying: "I was really shocked to learn that Mbappé intended to leave for free.

"Kylian is a fantastic boy, a gentleman… and leaving for free, when we're the biggest French club, it's not at his level. I was shocked and disappointed."

And six of his teammates are also pretty angry about Mbappe's antics, if reports are to be believed too.

The news of the winger's stance has not gone down well with former PSG director Leonardo Araujo, either, who did not hold back when asked about the transfer saga.

What did Leonardo say about Mbappe?

Speaking to L'equipe, Leonardo said: “PSG existed before Kylian Mbappe and it will exist after him. He has been in Paris for six years and in those six seasons, five different clubs have won the Champions League.

"This means that it is entirely possible to win this competition without him. With his behaviour over the past two years, Mbappe shows that he is not yet a player capable of really guiding a team.

"He is a great player, not a leader. He is a great scorer, not a creative. It's hard to build a team around him. For the good of PSG, I think the time has come for Mbappe to leave, no matter how.”

What is Kylian Mbappe's transfer value?

Mbappe's price tag will reportedly become clear once a decision is made on his future, according to Romano. As per Transfermarkt, though, the star striker is currently worth €180m (£153.43m), which is about how much PSG initially paid AS Monaco to secure his signature back in 2018.

Given the fact that he will be a free agent in 12 months, however, the Ligue 1 giants could be forced to settle for a cut-price sale of their star man if they want to secure a transfer fee this summer.

Clubs will be well aware of Mbappe's situation, and perhaps PSG's desperation to make some money back on the initial deal they made with Monaco. Their worst-case scenario will be seeing the 24-year-old walk away for free next summer.

As the transfer saga continues, it will certainly be interesting to keep an eye on the relationship between the club and the player. Things already look like they're heading for a downward spiral, and as both parties remain stubborn with their stance, even more drama could unfold over the coming weeks and months.

Stevens' six routs Gloucestershire for 61

Kent’s wily seamer Darren Stevens bagged 6 for 22 to help his side to secure a dramatic three-day victory in Canterbury

ECB Reporters Network09-Apr-2017
ScorecardKent’s wily seamer Darren Stevens bagged 6 for 22 to help his side to secure a dramatic three-day victory in Canterbury where Gloucestershire were skittled for 61 in the space of 93 minutes.Stevens, 41, joined forces with James Harris – making his on-loan debut from Middlesex – to dismiss the visitors inside 21 mid-session overs and wrap up an emphatic win with four sessions of this Specsavers County Championship clash remaining.”It’s a great shame because we kept on scrapping in the field and our four lads, Liam [Norwell] in particular, bowled really well throughout for us, but we can’t afford to keep batting like that. We just didn’t stand up,” Richard Dawson, the Gloucestershire coach, admitted. “There’s not much you can say after being bowled out for 61 on a good cricket pitch. We had a quick two-minute chat and will all have time to think it over on the way home. We’ll then have a de-brief back in Bristol and re-group before we take on Leicestershire.”Gloucestershire’s unlikely victory target of 396 on a sporting St Lawrence pitch, suddenly became an insurmountable task once Kent’s new ball pairing of Stevens and Harris reduced the visitors to 14 for 4 in the space of 28 deliveries.Cameron Bancroft appeared bemused as he played down the wrong line to lose off stump to Harris, then first innings top-scorer Chris Dent suffered a similar fate when shouldering arms to a Stevens in-swinger.Will Tavare prodded forward at Harris to feather a catch to the keeper and, next ball up, George Hankins threw the kitchen sink into a drive only to be caught in the cordon by Will Gidman at third slip.Visiting skipper Phil Mustard survived the Harris hat-trick delivery but, without scoring, he nicked behind when aiming to drive a drifting in-ducker from Stevens.Graeme van Buuren withdrew the bat against Stevens to lose off stump, as did Craig Miles after groping inside the line of an away swinger to make it 24 for 7.As they moved past 31 David Payne at least spared Gloucestershire the ignominy of posting their lowest total against Kent – mustered at the Angel Ground, Tonbridge in 1903 – but, with 36 on the board, Payne sliced a back-foot force against Stevens to backward point where Daniel Bell-Drummond pouched a diving catch.Jack Taylor pushed defensively outside the line of another Stevens in-swinger to depart lbw then Liam Norwell, Kent’s tormentor with the ball, top-scored with 24 before he skied an attempted pull against Mitch Claydon to the keeper to finish the game by 3.50pm, while Harris completed his excellent debut with figures of 3 for 26 and six wickets in the game.”I certainly didn’t see that coming,” Stevens said. “There was plenty in the pitch for the bowlers if you put it in the right places and when we spoke after day one I thought 250 was a par score.”We felt Gloucestershire bowled too short in our first innings and we went on to bowl better lengths and got dramatic rewards. It was a really good cricket pitch; plenty in there for the bowlers, but if you applied yourself with the bat you could score runs on it too. Joe Denly played brilliantly for us, I scraped a 50 and I felt Chris Dent was outstanding for them in their first innings. You needed to bide your time and wait for bad balls. It was old school cricket on a great cricket pitch.”There was little or no sign of the drama that would follow at the start of day three as Kent batted on until shortly after lunch in adding 128 to their overnight total. Resuming on 118 for 4 the hosts were soon in trouble against fiery opening bursts from Norwell, who bagged 3 for 0 in five balls.Nightwatchman Harris sparred at a Norwell lifter and edged through to keeper Mustard, Stevens lost his off stump when aiming an airy drive to a full delivery then, two balls later, Rouse also departed without scoring when he feathered one from Norwell to third slip where Tavare took a sharp chance. With a five-wicket haul to his name and eight in the match, Norwell took a deserved rest, allowing experienced left-handers Gidman and James Tredwell to forge a vital eighth-wicket partnership that added an unbroken 60 through to the interval. In the process, Gidman scored a 101-ball 50 with eight fours. The hosts came out swinging for late runs after lunch, but Gidman was bowled by Taylor without addition and, two balls later, Matt Coles fell to the same bowler after heaving across the line. Tredwell (47*) and Mitch Claydon added 52 for the last wicket before Claydon clipped to mid-on.Kent banked 21 points for their opening Division Two win of the campaign while Gloucestershire headed home with only three.

Vilas, Clark stop Worcestershire's winning run

Lancashire Lightning recorded their second successive victory in this year’s Royal London One-Day Cup when they defeated the previously undefeated Worcestershire Rapids by 152 runs at Emirates Old Trafford. The result keeps Lancashire’s hopes of qualification from the North Group very much alive, although they probably still need to win all three of their remaining North Group games. Despite this unexpected reverse, Worcestershire are still expected to finish in the top three, thereby ensuring their progression. The game was a triumph for Dane Vilas, who made his maiden Lancashire century in his side’s 313 for 5, but it was even more memorable for Jordan Clark who followed his 79 not out by taking 4 for 34 as Worcestershire managed only 161 all out in 34.5 overs in replyThe first half of Lancashire’s innings was characterised by steady accumulation punctuated by the regular loss of wickets; the second half by a magnificent, unbroken 160-run partnership between Vilas and Clark, the latter’s power-hitting contrasting pleasantly with the South African’s inventive strokeplay and astute innings management. These qualities were noticed by their absence earlier in the morning when Alex Davies had lost his middle stump to the twelfth ball of the day, bowled by John Hastings, and Haseeb Hameed, having batted competently for 36, edged Josh Tongue to Ben Cox when shaping to work the ball to third man.The 19-year-old Tongue soon collected his second notable wicket when Liam Livingstone obligingly pulled him to Ross Whiteley at deep square leg. It was not the subtlest of traps and Lancashire’s problems were compounded five overs later when Karl Brown was bowled by Brett D’Oliveira for a well-made 77-ball 63 which had included four fours and two sixes.Vilas marked his arrival at the wicket by reverse sweeping his first ball from Moeen Ali for four but the England off-spinner claimed an important wicket shortly after when he had Steven Croft lbw for five, leaving Lancashire on 153 for five in the 32nd over.D’Oliveira’s well-controlled leg spin earned him figures of one for 32 from his ten overs but the other bowlers came in for severe punishment as Vilas and Clark’s partnership gathered pace. Ali, who was twice lifted for straight sixes by Clark, finished with one for 75 as the pair set a new List A sixth-wicket record for Lancashire against Worcestershire.Vilas hit twelve fours and, having reached his fifty off 49 balls, took a further 34 deliveries to reach a hundred which was completed off the fourth ball of the final over. Clark, whose batting has been one of the features of Lancashire’s early season, finished with 79 not out off 58 balls. He hit four fours and three sixes. Tongue was the only Rapids bowler to take more than one wicket and he finished with two for 46 off seven overs.Needing to score at 6.26 runs per over to win, Worcestershire’s innings started badly and got progressively worse. Ali completed a poor match when he was well beaten by James Anderson and caught behind in the third over after the resumption.Tom Kohler-Cadmore mis-drove Kyle Jarvis to Stephen Parry three overs later and even the 59-run stand between Daryl Mitchell and Joe Clarke was halted by the loss of four wickets in 21 balls for 12 runs.Mitchell departed for 29 when he chipped Parry to Brown at midwicket and D’Oliveira then feathered a catch to Davies off Clark, who also had his near namesake athletically caught by Anderson for 36.When Whiteley was bowled by one that kept a little low from Clark, Worcestershire were 82 for six in the eighteenth over and their plight became even worse four overs later when Ed Barnard, having made eight, chopped the suddenly unplayable Clark on to his stumps.Brief partnerships merely delayed the inevitable but it allowed Simon Kerrigan to take two wickets and Jarvis to remove Leach for 12.

Leeds Frontrunners For ‘Important’ £15k-p/w Signing

Leeds United will need all hands on deck to ensure their latest absence from the Premier League is not as long as the last, but some shrewd summer additions could easily prevent that.

Who are Leeds United signing this summer?

Having already welcomed Ethan Ampadu to Elland Road, and continuing to be linked with new goalkeepers to put the final nail in Illan Meslier's coffin, it seems that Daniel Farke has an understandable focus on shoring up his fragile defence.

However, that is not to suggest he will neglect offensive reinforcements, with one report outlining that. As per Spanish reports, the Whites are reportedly seeking to profit from Cardiff City's unearthing of Sory Kaba from FC Midtjylland.

Having spent half of last season on loan in Wales, his goalscoring efforts proved vital in earning the Bluebirds Championship survival.

Now, the Yorkshire outfit could seek to capitalise on that, but face competition from a host of other clubs from within their division. Despite that, they are noted as one of the frontrunners, alongside Watford and his temporary former employers.

The 27-year-old could prove vital in spearheading Farke's promotion push next season, as a tall, pacey and lethal front-man.

It would be hard not to draw immediate physical similarities with a former forward of Leeds', Jermaine Beckford, who too had a hand in their prior rise up the divisions.

How many goals did Beckford score for Leeds?

Having fallen into League One, marking some of the darkest days in the club's recent memory, a youngster signed innocuously from Wealdstone emerged from nowhere to make himself a hero.

Although game time was sparse at first, he was handed a chance following their relegation, to which he rewarded his employers. 20 goals in just their second year in League One marked a solid return, but he would improve that to 27 the year following as they narrowly missed out on a Championship return.

He was not to be denied on the third time of consistently outstanding campaigns, posting 25 league goals with a further seven assists to finally fire them back to within one division of the top flight before leaving a hero.

jermaine-beckford-leeds-united

Achieving such success was aided by his laser precision in front of goal, as well as a 6 foot 2 frame that made his turn of pace so extraordinary. As something of a physical marvel, he provided the key firepower needed to earn promotion.

Who is Sory Kaba?

In Kaba, who similarly has that speed to partner his height (6 foot 3), he could prove to be that same hero needed in their latest hour of need.

After all, the £15k-per-week finisher has already shown himself capable of handling pressure, albeit at the opposite end of the table that Farke will be hoping to challenge.

His manager Sabri Lamouchi even claimed: "This is the challenge for him, to be the best scorer for this team. He can do that. He's scored important goals, he's given us important points and is doing a job. I'm happy for him and happy for the team."

With eight goals in just 17 league appearances, there is precedent to believe that surrounding him with increased quality could see these figures could skyrocket to the level capable of earning that all-important Premier League return.

Sun shines on Lancashire; Bailey smiles upon the sun

George Bailey does not gain attention for Australa’s Test side these days but he did little wrong on a delightful summer’s day in Manchester

Paul Edwards at Old Trafford19-Jun-2017
ScorecardGeorge Bailey has not played a Test match for over three years and there were times during this broiling Mancunian afternoon when it was rather tricky to see why this is so.One accepts at once that it is difficult to compare Lancashire v Hampshire on a steamy Monday at Emirates Old Trafford with the quite different heats produced by five-day cricket at the MCG or Mumbai; one acknowledges likewise that Bailey came into this game having scored 83 runs in five championship innings for Hampshire this season. All the same, as Bailey adjusted his guard and got forward as often as possible to counteract the swinging deliveries bowled by a pace-dominated Lancashire attack in mid-afternoon one was entitled to wonder why a batsman capable of making 127 and batting with such technical proficiency and good sense appears permanently excluded from his country’s Test team. It is not as if the last three years have been a green and gold age.Critics may observe that Bailey’s batting merely appeared good when compared to the errors committed around him and it is certainly true that the shots played by Jimmy Adams and Michael Carberry in the morning session at Old Trafford are unlikely to make the Rose Bowl’s choicest blooms package in September. Adams tried to play Kyle Jarvis to leg but only gave a catch to Rob Jones at cover off the leading edge; Carberry’s flat-footed slash merely nicked the ball to Alex Davies. Those dismissals sandwiched the departure of Rille Rossouw, who was deceived by Jarvis’s slower ball and gave a return catch to the bowler. They left Hampshire on 38 for 3 after winning the toss and opting to bat on a morning borrowed from Tennessee Williams’ more sultry dramas. Suddenly this summer, we had a batting morning and Hampshire were wasting their skipper’s correct call.Bailey, though, clearly recognised the opportunity with which his side had been presented and he revealed this in his assured driving and deft glances as much as in his vigilant defence. For a while it looked as though James Vince would partner his captain towards abundance but he was given out leg before to Luke Procter for 22 half an hour after lunch and a couple of deliveries after Lancashire had secured the second of their two ball changes.Indeed it was a day on which Bailey had only to drive a boundary to the pavilion for the home bowlers to scrutinise the seemingly tattered object returned for their use and toss it to the umpires. When it comes to cricket balls bowlers can be as choosy as Year 11 pupils selecting their prom outfits and very nearly as prone to tantrums and sulks.George Bailey’s hundred rejuvenated Hampshire•Getty Images

Ultimately Bailey’s resistance proved contagious as was proved by the three fifty-plus partnerships he shared with Lewis McManus, Gareth Berg and most notably Kyle Abbott, whose unbeaten 76 in the evening session was replete with uncomplicated shots played against an attack enervated by heat and devoid of the discipline it had displayed for most of the afternoon.Yet Abbott’s selective aggression – he has whacked a dozen boundaries and is only five runs short of a career-best score – was only possible because Bailey had battled away for just over five hours and had found another partner of equal resolve and comparable proficiency. That colleague was Lewis McManus, a wicketkeeper batsman who never gives his wicket away and who joins John Simpson as one of those fine county glovemen who seem destined not to get a sniff of representative cricket. Perhaps it might help if they changed the first letter of their surnames to a “B”.McManus put on 52 with Bailey and he did so at a stage in the day when the ball was swinging all over the shop and under the counter. It took a good ball to remove him too, Jordan Clark getting a little extra bounce and inducing an edged catch to James Anderson. McManus was replaced by Gareth Berg and another 53 were added to the total before Parry became the sixth Lancashire bowler to take a wicket when Berg missed a sweep and was leg before. For the next 18 overs or so Bailey’s good judgement and self-denial was vindicated by Abbott’s many justified freedoms. Having reached his century off 145 balls he was eventually dismissed when he played on to Anderson, whose beard may have been an attempt to disguise himself and suggest to Bailey that he was not the bowler he had milked for 28 runs at Perth in December 2013.No matter. Abbott was 57 when Bailey was out and he was given sensible company by Brad Tylor until the close. Hampshire have the edge in this game and they do so because their captain understood the needs of his side and met them. This is still a very good pitch and it now looks like a good toss to have won. “Bat!” said the sun as it rose over the rich Lancashire plain at around five o’clock this morning and George Bailey was only too happy to obey its injunction.

Tottenham: Spurs Are About To Lose "Sensational" Star

Tottenham Hotspur star Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is "closer" to joining La Liga giants Atletico Madrid with the player agreeing personal terms, according to reports.

Who will leave Spurs?

As new manager Ange Postecoglou seeks to rebuild this Spurs side in his own image, certain squad members will inevitably have to make way this summer.

The north Londoners have already put pen to paper on deals for goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, playmaker James Maddison and winger Manor Solomon – but Harry Winks remains their only confirmed departure.

A succession of players have been linked with an exit, though, including Hugo Lloris, Ivan Perisic, Davinson Sanchez, Ryan Sessegnon, Eric Dier and Ben Davies. Giovani Lo Celso and Sergio Reguilon, who spent parts of last season on loan elsewhere, are also candidates for the chopping block (The Telegraph).

Some Spurs players have come out to confirm they could indeed move elsewhere, with long-serving number one Lloris saying as much to French news outlet Nice-Matin.

"We are coming to an important moment, whether for the club or for me," explained Lloris.

"It’s the end of an era. I have desires for other things, I will ask myself quietly to study what will be possible.

"But I don’t forget that I still have a year of contract with Tottenham and that in football it is always difficult to predict what will happen.

"What is essential at the moment is to recover well from my injury. I’m on vacation but I continue to talk and do my training. My goal is to be on top in July, then we’ll see what the future holds."

Hojbjerg, who has been attracting real interest from Atletico Madrid recently, could also end up departing this summer as Postecoglou aims to reinvent the midfield with more creativity.

pierre-emile-hojbjerg

Tottenham have apparently had their eyes on the likes of Chelsea star Conor Gallagher and Barcelona midfielder Franck Kessie as possible replacements for the Dane.

According to The Times, it appears Hojbjerg is edging nearer and nearer to the Spurs exit door just three summers after they signed him from Southampton.

The 27-year-old has apparently agreed personal terms with Atletico, and after this development, Hojbjerg "has moved closer" to a move across the continent.

Nothing else is said beyond that line, but we can safely assume Tottenham's mainstay from last season may well be on the move pretty soon.

How good is Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg?

The former Saints star was one of Tottenham's most regularly-used assets over 2022/2023.

Indeed, only superstar striker Harry Kane played more league minutes than Hojbjerg last season, with the Denmark international bagging four goals and five assists from midfield (WhoScored).

Hojbjerg also averaged an impressive passing accuracy of around 88.6%, so selling him could leave a gaping hole behind for Postecoglou and co to fill.

Members of the press called him "sensational" at times for Tottenham last campaign, with former Spurs keeper Paul Robinson left "surprised" by his brief turnaround in form under Antonio Conte late last year.

"“Hojbjerg has surprised me this season," said Robinson to Football Insider.

“There was a point where it looked like he would be on his way but now he is one of the first names on the team sheet.

“Under Conte, he has reached another level."
