Fair bit of time to decide on future – Misbah

The Pakistan captain wishes to make use of the break he has – they play their next Test in March-April – to decide whether he wants to play on or move on

Misbah-ul-Haq has averaged 12.66 in six innings on the tour of Australia•AFP

Misbah-ul-Haq, 42, will not be hurried into making a decision on his future, even after another questionable bit of decision-making with the bat on the final day of the Test series against Australia in Sydney.Misbah batted with greater assurance than at any point on tour, battling through to 38 in nearly three hours. It was a more familiar Misbah innings, long periods of resolute defending punctured by an occasional aggressive shot.In the process, he kept Pakistan’s prospects of escaping with a draw alive but in trying to hit Steve O’Keefe over a legside boundary, he sliced a leading edge to Nathan Lyon at cover. It was the latest in a series of poor shots that have led to Misbah’s dismissal at a time when his team needed him to play a long innings. In this Test alone, he has been caught slogging off a spinner twice. In the aftermath of Pakistan’s last-day collapse and subsequent defeat in the second Test, that error in decision-making had led him to the verge of retirement; so despondent was he at the time, he said he could quit even before the third Test. Instead, after a brief period of reflection and on the advice of team-mates and coaches, he put off the decision and went on to play this Test.”About my future, there is a fair bit of time,” he said. “We go back [to Pakistan], there is a bit of time off, there is a month in which this ODI series happens. Then there is the PSL [Pakistan Super League, where he is captaining the defending champions Islamabad United]. So I think there is time to sit down easily and think about whatever decision I am going to make.”Misbah had similarly put aside a decision to retire after a defeat of England in the UAE in 2015-16. Then, with a long gap between Pakistan’s Test commitments, the PCB were able to convince him to keep playing.Misbah has plenty of time for reflection again as Pakistan ponder a fairly light Test schedule. They have a series in West Indies in March-April before a summer trip to Bangladesh and then a series in the UAE with Sri Lanka. At one stage during this Test, news began circulating he was considering an offer from a Sydney side to play in the Big Bash League but that is no longer on the cards. The decision to continue playing for Pakistan or call time on his career may come down to how much confidence Misbah has in his own batting. It was the lack of it that led him to consider walking away in Melbourne and it was brought up again in Sydney, where he ended the series averaging 12.66.”In cricket, confidence plays a huge role,” he said. “If you are scoring runs and get a good start, then it is easier for you. When you come to new conditions, the first few innings are very important. It didn’t happen here.”In New Zealand also there weren’t runs. I think that shortage of confidence stayed through the series. When you get under pressure, you make these mistakes, you make these decisions to hit shots that you shouldn’t hit. That was there throughout.”

Titans overcame an uninterrupted spell from offspinning allrounder Prenelan Subrayen, which read 15.4 -6-35-5, and a batting collapse to scramble to a two-wicket win in a small chase of 91 against Dolphins in Pietermaritzburg. The result handed Titans 17.96 points and lifted them to the top of the points table.Subrayen struck in his second over, having opener Aiden Markram caught behind for 5. Grant Mokoena, Dean Elgar, captain Henry Davids and Jonathan Vandiar all departed in a space of six overs to leave Titans reeling at 35 for 5 in 15.5 overs. Wicketkeeper-batsman Heinrich Klaasen followed his 195 in Titans’ first innings with 35 off 52 balls to briefly ease the nerves, before he was the seventh Titans batsman to be dismissed with the side 12 runs away from the target. Two overs later, Malusi Siboto became Subrayen’s fifth wicket, but Shaun von Berg and Junior Dala held on to complete a tense win.Klaasen stood out in Titans’ first innings too – scoring his seventh first-class hundred and nearly converting it into a double-hundred. He struck 23 fours and two sixes during his 195 off 353 balls. Von Berg pitched in with a half-century to help Titans to a 102-run first-innings lead after Dolphins, who had opted to bat, squandered a solid platform to be dismissed for 301 in the last over of the first day.The top three – Divan van Wyk, Senuran Muthusamy, Vaughn van Jaarsveld – all hit fifties, but 171 for 1, Dolphins crashed to 301 all out.In Dolphins’ second innings, it was the top order that collapsed. Davids accounted for the top three and when von Berg had Khaya Zondo lbw for a duck, Dolphins were 21 for 4 in 10.2 overs.Sibonelo Makhanya and Daryn Smit led the salvage job with a 94-run stand, but von Berg wrapped up the tail to finish with a match haul of six wickets. Dolphins were bowled out for 192 in 61.3 overs, setting Titans a target of 91.Von Berg then held his nerve with the bat – staying unbeaten on 1 along with Dala – to tip a thriller Titans’ way. Dolphins managed only 6.02 points and slipped from second to fourth.

Liverpool Weighing Up Swoop For £60m-Rated Dominik Szoboszlai

Liverpool's search for another option in their midfield has led them to Domink Szoboszlai, according to a report from The Athletic.

How many goals has Dominik Szoboszlai scored?

The attacking midfielder, who can also play on the wing, seems to only be getting better as his career goes on, and virtually guarantees end product from the middle of the park.

Having impressed initially with RB Salzburg, managing an incredible 36 goal contributions in 36 league starts across three years for the Austrian outfit, he was poached by sister club Leipzig in Germany.

Rather than struggle to adapt or have his numbers drop off though, the 22-year-old has continued to shine and has actually managed his two best ever goal contribution tallies in the last two seasons.

In 2022/23, the Hungary international managed a total of six goals and eight assists in 28 Bundesliga starts for the club. It was the same amount that he managed last season too, and has meant that he is now on the radar of a number of clubs this summer.

It has been Newcastle who have been most heavily linked with Szoboszlai up to now, with the Toon keeping tabs on the player as they hunt for midfield options.

Are Liverpool signing Szoboszlai?

Now though, according to a report from The Athletic, Premier League rivals Liverpool also have him on their radar. The club have even held talks with his camp already over a potential transfer this summer and are now mulling up whether to move for the player.

A deal would be hefty though, with Leipzig wanting 70 million Euros for the 22-year-old, as that would trigger his release clause, a clause which expires on Friday.

The Reds appear to feel a move may be hard to do – perhaps due to that time constraint – but it does look as though he is certainly on their wanted list. No official bid or offer has been tabled by Liverpool or Newcastle.

He's not only a talent for his club but for his country too. Having recently impressed during Hungary's fixture against Bulgaria, football talent scout Jacek Kulig called Szoboszlai a "leader" and "future icon" for them.

That's despite the fact he is still only 22-years-old. It shows how talented the player is and how he is already such a key figure for his country – he's their skipper, a clear indication of how highly he is rated back home.

If Liverpool do manage to seal a deal for the attacking midfielder then, it could be a real boost of creativity and life in midfield for the Reds.

£12m Striker "Interested" In Dyche Project

Everton target Joel Piroe is "interested" in joining the club this summer thanks to the successful "groundwork" done by the Toffees to convince the Swansea City man, journalist Paul Brown has told GIVEMESPORT.

Everton transfer news – What's the latest on Joel Piroe?

It was another near-cataclysmic season for the blue half of Merseyside last year, with Sean Dyche's men only staving off Premier League relegation thanks to an incredibly nervy 1-0 win at home to Bournemouth on the last day of the season.

sean-dyche-everton

It's perhaps no surprise then that the summer has already seen the start of a massive overhaul of the playing squad, with players like Conor Coady, Yerry Mina, and Tom Davies all leaving Goodison Park.

One of those touted for an exit is academy product Ellis Simms, with the Mailonline reporting that Championship side Swansea have proposed a swap deal with Everton that would see their striker Piroe don the blue and white of the Toffees.

With forward being a position of the team Dyche needs to improve, the offer could prove too good to turn down, especially as the Daily Mail report that the Swans value him at £12m, meaning a swap deal could significantly reduce that fee, if not erase it entirely.

What has Paul Brown said about Joel Piroe to Everton?

Brown revealed that Everton have already been speaking to the player and his team regarding a move to Merseyside, with those efforts appearing to pay off.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, he said: "Piroe is certainly an interesting one, and it seems that Everton have done their groundwork there, because his camp are saying that Everton are one of the clubs that he'd be interested in joining.

"He's only got a year left on his contract, as far as I'm aware, which means there wouldn't be a huge fee involved."

Would Joel Piroe be good enough for Everton?

It was an excellent season for the 23-year-old in the Championship last season as he scored 19 goals and assisted another two in 43 appearances, giving him a goal contribution every two games.

Swansea City's Joel Piroe

In stark contrast, Everton's top scorer in the league last season was Dwight McNeil, who managed just seven, or 0.24 goals per 90, a huge difference in productivity.

According to WhoScored, the Dutchman also averaged a very impressive rating of 6.93 across those 43 league games, maintaining a pass success rate of 82.8% and having 3.3 shots per game.

Swans manager Russell Martin was full of praise for the dynamic forward upon reaching 40 goals for the team last season, saying:

“Joel has been amazing since we have been here, he is just a great young man, first and foremost. As a footballer, he is adaptable and intelligent. He is technically really gifted with both feet and good movement.

"His willingness and capacity to learn is incredible, and his understanding of what we are trying to do is amazing."

joel-piroe-leeds-united-transfer-news-championship

Whilst Piroe certainly looks like the real deal, it is worth remembering that he is entirely unproven in the Premier League, and so there is an element of risk in signing him, but if the club can get him for a cut price fee with Sims going the other way it seems well worth the gamble.

Impressive bowling returns from medium-pacers Andrew Ellis and Logan van Beek topped and tailed Canterbury’s 119-run victory against Otago with an innings and a day to spare, as Chad Bowes struck a 137 to help Canterbury retain their position at the top of the Plunket Shield points table. In what was Canterbury’s fourth win in eight matches, Ellis’ 6 for 35 skittled Otago for 140 in 71 overs in the first innings, after opener Brad Wilson, the captain, top-scored with 70, while only three other batsmen managed to get into double figures.Canterbury’s reply was headlined by Bowes’ 147-ball 137, that saw him share an opening partnership of 95 runs with Jack Boyle (25), before he forged two more partnerships in excess of 65 runs with Peter Fulton (30) and Ken McClure (73) for the second and third wicket, respectively.Substantial contributions from the lower order – including Todd Astle (41) and Cam Fletcher (34) – took Canterbury to 395 for six in 110 overs on the third day, helping their side earn four bonus points for batting and eventually declare at 432 for 9.With a 292-run deficit to contend with, the only resistance offered by Otago in the second innings was a 72-run stand for the fourth wicket between Michael Rippon (41) and wicketkeeper Derek de Boorder, who top-scored with a 123-ball 50. Van Beek starred in the final innings with returns of 5 for 43, his third first-class five-wicket haul and second in consecutive seasons at Hagley Oval, to roll Otago for 173 in 60.1 overs. The victory gave Canterbury 20 points, the maximum available in a match – 12 for an outright win, 4 bonus points each for batting and bowling. They remain the team with the highest outright wins heading into the final two rounds.

BCCI withdraws complaint against Australia

The BCCI has withdrawn the complaint it had filed with the ICC on Thursday afternoon against Australia captain Steven Smith and batsman Peter Handscomb in relation to the DRS controversy in the Bengaluru Test

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Mar-20172:16

Sydney then, Bengaluru now

The BCCI has withdrawn the complaint against Steven Smith and Peter Handscomb hours after lodging it with the ICC, as the aftermath of the Bengaluru Test continued to unfold at a rapid pace.* A joint statement after the two board CEOs met constituted the second statement of peace in two days, after the ICC had said on Wednesday that it was not going to pursue the DRS controversy further. That, it is understood, came after the ICC had studied match footage and the evidence available before deciding to not press any charges against any of the Australia players or Virat Kohli. This was communicated to both the boards, who wanted the ICC to initiate proceedings. The BCCI wanted an investigation into their allegations that Australia sought dressing-room assistance on DRS reviews, and CA wanted action against Kohli who had made public accusations that Australia systemically manipulated DRS protocols. What they said about withdrawing the complaint

CA’s James Sutherland: “We are halfway through what has already been a riveting series – and there is still much to look forward to. In discussing the relevant issues in depth, we have agreed that it is in the best interests of the game to put these differences aside and clear the way for the focus to be on the cricket.”
BCCI’s Rahul Johri: “While having responded officially to one incident which happened in the last Test, together, we believe that the focus of the teams and the joy they provide to the fans should not be diluted and it is imperative to ensure that the rest of the series, which promises a great cricketing contest, not be compromised.”

The incident occurred on the final day of the Test, when Smith looked towards the dressing room after having chatted with non-striker Handscomb when given out lbw in a tense chase, apparently for clues on whether to review the call or not. Umpire Nigel Llong intervened immediately, and sent Smith on his way. In his post-match conference, Smith put his actions down to a “brain fade”. Kohli disagreed with that, saying Australia took help from their dressing room on at least three occasions before making their mind up on DRS reviews in the Test. Kohli said he had made the umpires aware of the matter on two occasions before the third one played out in full view.Incidentally, the other two incidents that Kohli spoke of were not even part of the complaint that the BCCI CEO Rahul Johri lodged on Thursday. Under the DRS protocols, the Smith incident was already dealt with when he was not allowed to communicate with his dressing room. Had he then sought a review, it would have been disallowed. The BCCI, though, pushed for a charge for a level 2 offence under the ICC code of conduct, contending that Smith and Handscomb had acted against the spirit of cricket. To prove Smith and Handscomb had violated the spirit of cricket, the BCCI would have to prove intent, for which there is no evidence available. Handscomb had already tweeted an explanation for the incident saying he had asked Smith to look up because he didn’t know the playing conditions.Once the ICC received this complaint, it spoke to Johri and CA CEO James Sutherland, who were both present in Mumbai, and impressed upon them that the charge BCCI wanted to press was near impossible to prove. The drama ended late in the night, when the joint statement was released at 11.28pm.It said: “The BCCI will withdraw the complaint filed with ICC with an expectation that the two captains will meet prior to the Ranchi Test and commit to lead their teams by example and play the rest of the series, in the right spirit, demonstrating that the players from both teams are true ambassadors for their respective countries.”This should put end to a hostile aftermath of the Bengaluru Test, in which both the boards and their media wings became active participants. BCCI’s official Twitter handle released a clip of Smith’s dismissal with the caption “dressing room review system?”. On Thursday, Sutherland called Kohli’s claims “outrageous”, and the BCCI responded in a media release that it stood behind its captain.*18.00GMT, March 9: This article was updated after the BCCI withdrew its complaint.
