Everton have secured survival in their nail-biting Premier League clash with Bournemouth at Goodison Park this afternoon and Sean Dyche will be feeling incredibly relieved to have finally got the job done in the final moments of the season.
The Toffees have survived with just two points to spare with their 1-0 victory, meaning that both Leeds United and Leicester City will instead suffer the drop to the Championship this summer.
Indeed, the three points desperately needed did not come easy for the Merseysiders in front of the home support but ultimately, their relentless fight to fend of the Bournemouth attacking threat ultimately saved their skin.
Despite only having 38% possession at home, Everton had more shots on target (13 v 7), more big chances created (1 v 0), more tackles completed (18 v 12) and more duels won (60 v 47), putting on a defensive performance that Dyche will be proud of.
The hosts got off to a slow start with a growing hostile atmosphere being created with every moment passing, which was only made worse when Leicester City scored in the 34th minute which meant that Everton were as good as relegated if they didn’t find the winning goal as soon as possible.
In the final 45 minutes, the Blues came out with fighting spirit that finally paid off when Abdoulaye Doucoure scored a screamer in the 57th minute, which ended up being enough to save Everton from relegation.
Indeed, Doucoure will steal the headlines for his wonder strike, but it was the defensive display put on by James Tarkowski over the entire clash that ultimately kept Everton in the game throughout.
How did James Tarkowski get on vs Bournemouth?
The 30-year-old free transfer has revolutionised Everton’s defence since his arrival at Goodison Park last summer and has shown the fight needed when it matters the moment on numerous occasions over the Premier League campaign and particularly in today’s outing with the Cherries.
Over his 90-minute performance, the £100k-per-week titan – hailed “outstanding” by Dyche – won a whopping 12 duels, made eight clearances, won three tackles and completed three interceptions in an exemplary defensive performance that ultimately made him a hero on the blue side of Merseyside this evening.

According to One Versus One, Tarkowski has ranked first in the entire Premier League this season for blocked shots, blocks, pass interceptions and aerial challenges won ahead of the game today, which is a testament to not only the importance of his presence on the pitch but how incredible his impact has been for a player who joined for free.
With that being said, it will likely be a busy summer for Dyche as he endeavours to improve the squad and the quality of the performances on the pitch ahead of next season to ensure it will be a much less stressful experience for both the squad and supporters.

Jermaine Blackwood has said the match could have changed complexion had he not been dismissed in the last over before lunch

‘West Indies’ decision to bat first not a pragmatic one’ – Manjrekar
Jermaine Blackwood, whose innings of 62 and fourth-wicket partnership of 81 with Marlon Samuels were rare bright sparks in West Indies’ first-innings total of 196, said the match could have changed complexion had he not been dismissed in the last over before lunch. Having been reduced to 7 for 3, West Indies had recovered to 88 for 3 when R Ashwin had Blackwood lbw with only three balls left in the session.”When I went out [to bat], he [Samuels] was just giving me a lot of advice about staying positive and running well between the wickets and try to score runs and wear down the bowlers,” Blackwood said. “As scoring chances came, I played my shots. If I had come back after lunch, it would have been a different ball game, because me and Marlon had a nice partnership. For me to get out, it set the team back and put the bowlers back on top. So I guess you have to learn from your mistakes.”Blackwood said the counterattacking approach he adopted from the time he stepped in was just his natural game. “That is just normally how I play, ever since I started playing. So that’s my natural game. I try to score my first 20-25 runs quickly, and tried to use the pace of the ball. So that is how Jermaine Blackwood plays his game.”Jason Holder, the West Indies captain, had sprung something of a surprise at the toss, when he chose to bat on a damp, grassy pitch. Blackwood said there was nothing wrong with the decision to bat, but West Indies’ batsmen simply hadn’t batted well enough.”Normally, at Sabina Park, the wicket is going to have a little bit in it for the pace bowlers for a couple hours. This track is different and has some grass, so they will get assistance right through the match for pace bowlers. It wasn’t a wrong decision to bat first, but we just didn’t bat for a long period. I guess next time we will have to do that.”
Cape Cobras coach Paul Adams will keep his job after the Western Cape Cricket Board offered their support despite a complaint lodged against him by 14 contracted players at the end of last season

Cape Cobras coach Paul Adams will keep his job after the Western Cape Cricket Board (WCC) offered their support despite a complaint lodged against him by 14 contracted players at the end of last season. The board held a meeting on Monday after a deadlock last Thursday to discuss Adams’ future.Adams’ recently-issued two-year contract extension remains in place. The players were not involved in the meeting.Instead, WCC studied a report compiled by former South Africa conditioning coach Paddy Upton, who was appointed a mediator in the matter after an independent panel was convened to assess the players’ grievances. WCC did not divulge the contents of the report or confirm whether they acted on it, but revealed that Upton had not followed through on his mandate to speak to all contracted players.WCC chairman Angelo Carolissen insisted his office “deeply respects the concerns raised by the players,” which are believed to be centered on Adams’ management style.”We have no doubt that he possesses the vision and leadership abilities to propel the Cobras to the summit of all three domestic logs and return them to their trophy-hugging ways,” Carolissen said. The 2015-16 season was the first in eight years that Cobras did not win a trophy, and Adams’ only barren season since taking over in 2012. At 35, he was franchise cricket’s youngest coach and he enjoyed immediate success. The Cobras won two competitions in Adams’ first summer in charge and went on to collect three more trophies in the next two seasons.Lack of success last season brought rumblings of discontent, which Adams was made aware of as soon as the complaint was laid. He underwent a leadership course over the winter and has had his support staff bolstered with the addition of two former internationals in Ashwell Prince as assistant coach and Alan Dawson as convener of selectors. With the additional resources, Adams is confident he can return the franchise to winning ways.”I respect the players and have taken the learnings from this past winter to heart. I feel we will have a better understanding of each other going forward,” Adams said. “Part of my strategy to turn around the fortunes of the team was to secure the services of Ashwell Prince and Alan Dawson. It excites me to be working together with the two former players who will bring vast experience and I am sure will add value to the Cobras. I have also committed to up-skilling myself to ensure effective leadership and to produce and maintain the quality and brand of cricket that the Cobras are synonymous for.”There has been no statement from the players, although there was an indication that if Adams was retained, several senior squad members may leave the franchise. With the new season two weeks away, that appears unlikely to occur just yet.The Cobras’ 2016-17 season begins on October 5 with a first-class match against Lions in Johannesburg.
An update has emerged on Leeds United and their plans to replace Sam Allardyce following their relegation down to the Championship.
What's the latest on Rob Edwards to Leeds?
According to The Sun, the Whites are eyeing up Luton Town boss Rob Edwards, alongside Lorient's Regis Le Bris, as a possible candidate for the job in an ambitious swoop.
It is stated that the club want to draw a line under their dismal season by placing their faith in a new manager who can start a long-term project at Elland Road, although it remains to be seen how open the Hatters gaffer would be to the move given his side's promotion to the top-flight.
The club have confirmed that Allardyce has departed Elland Road by mutual consent after failing to achieve survival in his four Premier League matches in charge at the end of the 2022/23 campaign, with an announcement on his successor said to be on the way in the 'coming week'.
How did Rob Edwards perform this season?
The Welshman was dismissed by Watford, despite only losing twice after ten matches in the Championship and went on to win the play-offs with Luton to secure their first-ever promotion to the Premier League.
He enjoyed a terrific campaign with the Hatters and could arrive in west Yorkshire, if they are able to convince him to make the move.
Edwards would surely be a big upgrade on the departed Allardyce, who has not had any experience managing a team competing at the top end of the table for over ten years.
Former Leeds boss Sam Allardyce.
His last top-six finish in any division was third-place with West Ham United in the Championship in 2011/12. The Englishman won 1.87 points per game in the second tier and has since been in the bottom half positions in the Premier League in six of his last eight seasons as a manager.
Edwards, whose football has been described as "intense" by journalist Josh Bunting, is relatively fresh into management and has won League Two with Forest Green Rovers in 2021/22 before, now earning promotion with Luton via the play-offs.
The 40-year-old, who football agency chief Adrian Bevington hailed as "articulate", averaged two points per match in the regular season with his current club across 25 outings to finish third in the league.
These statistics show that Edwards is a promising young coach who has already proven himself to be capable of instilling a winning mentality at both Forest Green and Luton, whereas Allardyce's experience is mainly fighting for survival in the bottom half of the Premier League.
This is why Leeds could land a big upgrade on the former Everton boss as they could bring in an up-and-coming manager who has the ability to mastermind an instant promotion back to the big time, instead of someone who does not have a proven, or recent, track record on that front.

Incoming Tottenham Hotspur boss, Ange Postecoglou could already be eyeing up a first signing of the summer at N17, following an update regarding the club's pursuit of Leicester City star, James Maddison.
What's the latest on Maddison to Tottenham?
According to journalist Sean Walsh, writing on Twitter, the 57-year-old is said to have "approved" of the Lilywhites' pursuit of the England international, with the ex-Celtic man having been named as the new permanent head coach on Tuesday.
In his attached piece for 90min – alongside colleague Graeme Bailey – Walsh adds that the north London outfit are set to rival Newcastle United for the signing of the 26-year-old, with the playmaker in line to leave his current home following the Foxes' recent relegation.
This follows a previous report from The Sun which also claimed that both Spurs and the Magpies are 'pushing hardest' to sign the former Norwich City man ahead of next season, with the two-cap gem set to be available for around £40m with just a year left to run on his existing deal.
Would Maddison be a good signing for Tottenham?
The fleet-footed "magician" – as previously hailed by Statman Dave – would likely prove an astute capture for new man Postecoglou, with the Coventry-born sensation having proven his credentials in the Premier League in recent years, with 75 goals and assists in 163 games in the competition to date.
Despite forming part of a Leicester side that only recently suffered relegation, the £110k-per-week maestro did still enjoy a positive individual campaign after racking up 19 goal involvements in 30 league appearances, with only Harry Kane contributing more goals and assists (33) among the Spurs squad.
Harry Kane and James Maddison
That ability to make a telling impact in the final third could ensure that Maddison proves to be a dream partner to Kane at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next term, with the latter man likely to thrive off such elite service.
Hailed for his "world class" delivery in the past by Three Lions boss, Gareth Southgate, Maddison notably recorded 12 big chances and averaged 2.3 key passes per game in 2022/23 as a marker of his creative prowess, with that illustrating that he can be the man to deliver the goods on a plate for Tottenham's free-scoring, talisman.
Previously hailed as "the best centre-forward in world football" by his England colleague, Kane has been linked with a departure in recent times, although the current suggestion is that the 29-year-old will not be sold this summer, despite having just 12 months to run on his current deal.
As such, the 280-goal marksman would likely thrive off having quality figures around him under Postecoglou next season, such as Maddison, with the latter man clearly an asset who seeks to play forward at every available opportunity as he ranks in the top 15% among his European peers for progressive passes, as per FBref.
With Spurs seemingly "in need of that creativity" – as pundit Noel Whelan previously stated – the signing of the Leicester man could well have Kane licking his lips this summer…

The BCCI is unlikely to comply with the Supreme Court demand that it submit, on Friday, an undertaking saying it will “unconditionally” implement all the court-approved recommendations of the Lodha Committee

Bal: Don’t see BCCI turning a new leaf in one day
The BCCI is unlikely to comply with the Supreme Court demand that it submit, on Friday, an undertaking saying it will “unconditionally” implement all the court-approved recommendations of the Lodha Committee. In the absence of such an agreement from the BCCI, the Supreme Court had indicated it would pass an order on Friday to replace the board’s office bearers with a panel of administrators.A top BCCI office bearer told ESPNcricinfo there was no way the board could submit such an undertaking at short notice and without the approval of its member associations. “Who am I to submit the undertaking?” he said. “The question arises only if the states agree to these recommendations. How can BCCI office bearers decide what members will implement?”I can only bring members to the meeting room; I can’t force them to adopt recommendations. They said they couldn’t adopt the recommendations in entirety. What can the office bearers do in this situation? I don’t even have a vote.”When asked about the BCCI’s next course of action, he said: “We will wait for tomorrow’s order. What else can we do? How can this be done in such short notice? Till the time I have nothing in writing, how can I ask the states? Let the order come, we will make an official statement.”Several state association officials ESPNcricinfo had spoken to recently confirmed they were waiting for the BCCI’s decision on the recommendations before making amendments to their constitutions, as mandated by the first set of timelines laid down by the Lodha Committee. However, after the special general meeting on September 30, many of these state associations closed ranks ostensibly on the advice of BCCI. Only Vidarbha and Tripura decided to implement the recommendations approved by the court. The official said the Supreme Court should have passed an order if the recommendations were to be non-negotiable. “What do they mean by a timeline [for implementation of reforms]? Why didn’t Supreme Court pass an order under Article 142 [of the constitution] if they wanted to make it compulsory? Why are they saying that members should opt for the recommendations? These recommendations are forced upon us. They don’t understand the genuine compulsions that prevent us from implementing the reforms.”Desh Gaurav Sekhri, a sports law expert, said Article 142 gave the Supreme Court authority to pass a decree or make an order as necessary towards doing complete justice in a matter. “What is relevant to the current situation is that it gives the Supreme Court the power to punish contempt of court, and it has been used for that purpose in the past,” he told ESPNcricinfo. “The nature of this stand-off being unprecedented, the exact law and/or regulations that the Supreme Court invokes were it to pass an order on October 7 are not clear as of now. Invoking Article 142 would be an extremely serious step by the court, and would take this matter into a space from which conciliation or compromise may no longer be an option for either party.”Another BCCI office bearer admitted the board could have been less confrontational in its approach, referring to the tardiness in responding to the Lodha Committee’s correspondences. “This could have, and should have, definitely been handled better.”The latest developments in the tussle between the BCCI and the Lodha Committee took place in the Supreme Court on Thursday. The court was hearing the BCCI’s response to the status report filed by the Lodha Committee last week, which recommended that the BCCI office bearers be superseded because they were impeding the implementation of the recommendations passed by a Supreme Court order on July 18.
